2011-12 SEASON READY TO ROCK ’N’ ROLL Charlotte,” said Blumenthal President Tom Gabbard. “We are proud to be one of the top 10 touring markets, which helps Charlotte audiences be among the first to see tours such as THE ADDAMS FAMILY (Charlotte is the third stop). ” In addition to the Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series, Blumenthal Performing Arts announced four Broadway Extras: ROCK OF AGES, the arena-rock love story set to an ’80s soundtrack; the ® 2005 Tony Award winner for Best Musical MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT; the explosive, high energy STOMP; and a new touring production of the worldwide smash, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Tickets for the Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series productions are available now through a season subscription. The basic seven-show subscription includes all productions except JERSEY BOYS. The eight-show subscription includes the megahit. Prices for a seven-show package start as low as $126.

Elevated. This legendary contemporary ballet is a favorite among many NC Dance Theatre dancers and is part of the Director’s Choice performance in October. Dancer Sasha Janes takes a break from performing to choreograph Dangerous Liaisons. The twisted tale of passion and betrayal with original music and a modern set premieres in April. The season is anchored with the classics – Nutcracker, one of Charlotte’s favorite holiday traditions, and Sleeping Beauty, considered the essence of classical ballet. Sleeping Beauty takes to the stage in March with enchanting choreography, gorgeous costumes, magical sets and Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score. In November the popular Innovative Works series moves to the new 200-seat theater inside Dance Theatre’s home in Uptown Charlotte. “Moving Innovative Works to Dance Theatre’s home gives us the ability to try some new things we’re excited about,” said President & Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “We’re taking Innovative Works from a performance to an experience – bringing the audience closer to the dancers than ever before.”

ver the past year, North Carolina Dance Theatre has made big moves both on and off the stage! Last June the Company moved to its new home, the Patricia McBride & JeanPierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance on North Tryon Street in uptown Charlotte. Shortly thereafter the Company traveled to Washington, D.C., to perform at the Kennedy Center for the first time. The Company had many “firsts” this season including performing Dracula, devoting a performance series to women choreographers, and working with up-andcoming choreographers Jiri Bubenicek and Emery LeCrone. Other highlights were Resident Choreographer Dwight Rhoden’s world premiere ballet Reflections of…, inspired by the life and work of Charlotte-born Photo by Peter Zay. artist Romare Bearden, and Innovative Works, which included seven environmentally themed ballets. Dance Theatre is building on the excitement and momentum of the past year and looking forward to an artistically excellent and entertaining 2011-2012 Season. WILLIAM STEIG (Author of the Book Shrek!). Named the “King of Cartoons” by Newsweek, William Steig remains The New Yorker’s longestrunning contributor, with more than 1,600 drawings and 117 covers to his name. He began writing and illustrating books for children at the age of 60. His work Sylvester and the Magic Pebble earned him the Caldecott Medal, the highest honor bestowed on children’s picture books, but it was the 1990 fairy tale Shrek! that ultimately brought him his largest audience by inspiring one of the most successful film franchises in motion picture history. William Steig wrote and illustrated children’s books up until the last year of his life and died in 2003 at the age of 95. SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES NEW CLASSICS SEASON

he Charlotte Symphony recently announced its exciting 2011-2012 Classics series. Founded in 1932, the 2011-2012 season marks the 80th anniversary of the Charlotte Symphony and the second season of Music Director Christopher Warren-Green. Warren-Green will conduct eight of the ten programs in a Classics series that continues the Symphony’s tradition of highlighting emerging, exceptionally gifted soloists who are the brightest of their generation. Guest performers include pianist Martina Filjak, cellist Joshua Roman, pianist Joyce Yang, violinist Chad Hoopes, and Swedish soprano Klara Ek. Guest conductors include the esteemed Music Director of the North Carolina Symphony, Grant CHRISTOPHER WARREN-GREEN Llewellyn, and Michael Stern, conductor of the Kansas City Symphony in Kansas City, Missouri. Christopher Warren-Green opens the season on September 16 and 17 with the passionate music of beloved Russian composers – Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Mussorgsky. Featured soloist is the young Croatian pianist Martina Filjak, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor. Filjak was the winner of the 2009 Cleveland International Piano Competition and took First Prize at both the 2007 Viotti International Music Competition and the 2008 International Music Competition
Maria Canals. Long absent from Classics concerts, instrumental music by J.S. Bach will be performed on two programs this season: the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in November and the Orchestral Suite No. 1 in April. Classics 8 celebrates the music of Tchaikovsky as part of a month-long Tchaikovsky Festival, presented in collaboration with Opera Carolina and the North Carolina Dance Theatre. In addition to the Classics concerts, festival performances throughout the month of March include Opera Carolina’s production of Eugene Onegin, ballet with NCDT, and a special KnightSounds series concert by the Charlotte Symphony. “When I moved to Charlotte, it was a treat to discover the presence of the North Carolina Dance Theatre and Opera Carolina in the city,” says Music Director Christopher Warren-Green. “I saw the opportunity for the Symphony to collaborate with both of these wonderful arts organizations to showcase the talent of Charlotte. The Tchaikovsky Festival in March 2012 promises to be an exciting partnership." The 2011-2012 season comes to a magnificent conclusion in May with Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, performed with the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. In addition to the Symphony’s 80th year, this season also marks the 60th anniversary of the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. Missa Solemnis is one of Beethoven’s greatest achievements, contemporaneous with his famous Symphony No. 9.
