Many compare Kuti to the late Bob Marley, one of his contemporaries. But Jones believes that we really don't have anyone who compares to him in our culture. “Imagine Bob Dylan, a great protest singer, actually being jailed 200 times (for his lyrics) and having his hand broken. Imagine him being tortured,” Jones explained. “That happened to Fela. He really paid for his art and his voice in a profound way.” For information, go online to www. facebook.com/FELAmusical.

SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody Skewers Best-selling Trilogy

t’s time for the saucy book that caused a world sensation to get Spanked! You know the one we’re talking about? Last year, it seemed that everyone and their mother was reading the series. Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody is the hilarious new musical that brings all the naughty fun of the best-selling trilogy by E.L. James to the stage. Catch it Feb. 6-9 at McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square. Created and directed by Jim Millan, Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody skewers James’ tale of the relationship between a sexually inexperienced woman and a notso-inexperienced young man. The series of books has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. “Like anything that’s super hot in pop culture, if you put a certain kind of skewed comic mind to work on it, it’s a launching point for a lot of escapist fun,” said Millan in a recent interview. The story in The Fifty Shades Parody centers on a housewife, E.B. Janet, who tries to write an erotic novel. The audience watches as Janet’s writing comes to life in the characters of Hugh Hanson and Tasha Woode. The show includes musical numbers as well as improvised material, audience interaction and burlesque-style scenes. “It feels a bit Second City, a bit ‘Saturday Night Live,’ a bit Kids in the Hall – at times when the The Fifty Shades Parody brings the naughty fun of E.L. women are screaming, a bit Chippendales,” James' novels to the stage. said Millan in an interview with the Montreal Gazette. Millan coincidently directed the Kids and don’t miss one of the funniest and most in the Hall comedy group. exciting nights of the year! But while there is some sexy stuff in the Spank! Get there early for pre-show cocktails – including a signature Spank! concoction. Stay to meet the cast after the show, and pose for a photo with the fetching star himself.
