The Newsies Phenomenon Comes to the Belk Stage in Charlotte
E
xtra! Extra! Read all about it! The Tony Award-winning Disney hit Newsies is coming to Charlotte Jan. 6-11 at Belk Theater as part of the PNC Broadway Lights. The New York City boys from 1899 have not only been delivering papers, but also justice on stage since the Broadway premiere of their smash-hit show in 2012, and now the musical takes to the road on its fi st national tour. The tale of Newsies is based off of a very real story about the Newsboys Strike in 1899 in New York City. It left a legacy of what was to be the standard for treating young people in the workforce. What is it about this story that keeps people so engaged? We saw it in fi st when Disney fictionali ed the event into the 1992 movie by the same name. The film inspi ed a following of devoted fans over the years, which prompted Disney in March of 2012 to produce the musical show people now know and love. Some say the story garnered such a long-lasting cult following that a stage version was, in some ways, a given. Disney Theatrical Group President Thomas Schumacher says he knew there was something unique about the film ersion right off the bat. “It has a very theatrical quality to it. There’s a sense that it’s actually

happening in front of you, and because of that, all across the country, summer camps, high schools, fraternity houses all began to do their own versions of Newsies.” Winner of the 2012 Tony Awards for best score and best choreography, this show has been nothing short of a historically heart-pounding, breathtaking masterpiece that the New York Times called “a musical worth singing about!” Don’t miss it when it comes to Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in January!

Education and Early Engagement Are Essential to Opera Carolina's Mission
A
Students and staff will experience music by the “Composer of the Month.” They’ll learn fun facts about famous composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and others during morning announcements or a school TV show. Each month’s study will feature a live performance by young artists from local college and high school music programs. Opera Xpress brings opera directly into schools across the Carolinas. For more than 40 years, the educational touring company of Opera Carolina has been performing 45-minute youth-friendly productions that bring to life creative sets, costumes and stories, and are accompanied by curriculumlinked educational materials. This year’s Opera Xpress production, Hansel & Gretel, is a fun version of the classic tale that focuses on making good choices. The Opera Xpress tour will span 10 weeks and aims to impact 30,000 students in a dozen counties across the Carolinas. Production and program sponsors including Bank of America, Levine Cancer Institute, The Hearst Corporation and The Hearst Foundations, make it possible for Opera Carolina to bring these and other youth-oriented programs to the community.
s Opera Carolina opens its 2014/15 season, the company is doing much more than casting, rehearsing and building sets. Educating people – especially children – about the joy of opera is as much a focus as what happens on stage. “We have a commitment both to our audience and to the community at large,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina. “We engage young people at a very early age with opportunities for children and families at our main stage productions and by taking our shows on the road.” Student Night, one of Opera Carolina’s signature educational programs, takes place at Opera Carolina’s final d ess rehearsal for each main stage opera with tickets priced at just $5 for students and $10 for adults and available through CarolinaTix.org. Guests enjoy a meet-and-greet with members of the opera chorus, a Q&A with the principal artists, general admission seating and a pre-rehearsal preview. Opera Carolina’s newest program, Minds on Music, will be rolled out in 15 schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
All main stage performances are at the Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center For tickets: Call 704.372.1000 or visit www.operacarolina.org. 10 12

Guest Pianist to Perform 'Emperor' Concerto
T
his fall, the Charlotte Symphony welcomes gifted pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, popularly known as “Emperor" on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Also, a Thursday evening performance has been added on Oct. 30. The last piano concerto from the composer, the “Emperor” concerto was written in Vienna between 1809 and 1811 and dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven’s patron and student. The three-movement heroic piece premiered in Leipzig, Germany, in 1811 and remains one of the most frequently performed of Beethoven’s fi e piano concerti. In February 1812, three months following the premiere of the piece, the concerto was fi st performed in Vienna, played by one of Beethoven’s students, Carl Czerny. Beirut-born pianist and composer El Bacha was born into a family of musicians. By age 10, he performed his fi st concert with an orchestra. He soon earned a scholarship to the Paris Conservatoire and graduated by age 16. To date, he has played in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Tokyo NHK and the English Chamber Orchestra, among others. His interpretations of Beethoven’s complete sonatas and Chopin’s complete work for piano solo earned critical success, and in 2002, the Lebanese president awarded El Bacha with the gold medal of the Order of Merit, the country’s highest decoration in his native country. This concert is part of the Classics Series and will include Wagner’s “Prelude

to Act III from Lohengrin” and “Ein Heldenleben” (“A Hero’s Life”) by Strauss. The Classics Series is presented to the community by Wells Fargo Private Bank.

STEVE SOLOMON STEVE SOLOMON (Author/Actor) – A native of Brooklyn, Steve grew up in the multiethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. This was the perfect training ground for a dialectician and comedian. Steve learned at an early age how to use his gift for imitating accents to his advantage. He also realized that he was a prolific wri er of jokes and stories; real jokes. He submitted dozens of his stories to periodicals, friends and stand-up comics he knew in the business. With the coming of the Internet and email, Steve now had an outlet for much of his comedy writings. One email full of his jokes became 10; 10 became hundreds; and soon thousands of fellow emailers were enjoying Steve’s humor. And so it went for over 20 years. To this day, Steve receives email versions of his own jokes from all over the world. So, if some of the hilarious stories you hear “ring” familiar, trust me, they’re probably Steve’s. Using humor, dialects and sound effects in teaching, Steve was a real life version of Gabe Kaplan’s “Welcome Back Kotter.” Eventually, Steve became a physics teacher and a school administrator on Long Island, New York. He left his academic career behind and turned his attention to his latent love of making people laugh. As Steve puts it, “I decided to follow my heart and become an impoverished comedy writer and performer.” Steve’s show, the three-time award winning My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m In Therapy has met with rave reviews to soldout crowds throughout the country and overseas and became one of the longest running one-man comedy shows in history. Tonight’s show highlights the very best of his writing
talents. Steve has written three additional sequels to his original hit: My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m STILL in Therapy and his hilarious holiday show; My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m Home for the Holidays! Steve’s shows are currently touring the United States, Canada, and South Africa and have received critical acclaim, including winning The Connecticut Critics Circle Award, The San Francisco Drama Desk nomination, Broadway.com “Best new off-Broadway play. Steve’s latest creation, Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt ... the therapy continues, is a compilation of the very best of Steve’s work as well as his new comedy material. One note: All the voices and characters you hear tonight are Steve’s. Enjoy!

ANDREW ROGOW (Director) – Holding a BFA from New York University and an MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Andy is currently a member of The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. He was the founder and artistic director of the 17A
STEVE SOLOMON Different Drummer Music Theater in Chicago, the only musical theater ensemble company in the country at the time. While there, he produced and/or directed such musicals as Working, an avant-garde production of The Fantasticks, and the Chicago premiere of the 1940’s Radio Hour, which ran for six months at the Palmer House Hotel. Andy is an award-winning actor who has worked all over the country. Favorite roles include Che in Evita, Hysterium in A Funny Thing … Forum, Ned in The Normal Heart, and Pooch in Good News. While living in Las Vegas, he also worked as a singer at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino. Before joining the Hollywood Playhouse staff, he was the Artistic Director of Cue Productions, based in New York City, which specialized in Jewish musicals. He directed their productions of “Seymour Glick is Alive but Sick,” which allowed him the opportunity to work with comedy legend Steve Allen, “Sophie, Totie and Belle,” and “Meet Me at the Pitkin.” During his tenure at the Hollywood Playhouse, he has directed Sally Struthers and Dawn Wells in Always, Patsy Cline, the world premieres of The Comet’s Tale, Eye of the Beholder, Harry and Thelma in the Woods and critically acclaimed productions of The Fantasticks, Man of La Mancha, A Grand Night for Singing and Fiddler on the Roof, for which he received a Carbonell Award nomination for best director. Andy is a member of Actors’ Equity
Association and The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. He also sits on the board of directors of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and is the president of the Theatre League of South Florida. He is the original director of Steve Solomon’s My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish & I'm in Therapy. ABBY KOFFLER (Producer) – With over 35 years’ experience in the entertainment industry, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy was the fi st time out for Abby as a producer. Abby met Steve 14 years ago while he was doing stand-up comedy for a charity event. After many lunches and long talks, they became good friends. Recognizing Steve’s enormous potential and his ability to do more with his talent, she prodded him to work with her to create a vehicle that would better showcase those abilities and, as Steve remembers it, she gave him only two hours to come up with a title for it. Together they created the title and the concept of My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy! Over a number of years, a lot of hard work, and a very successful road tour, their dream of presenting the show in New York came to fruition. The show ran for almost two years in New York City, and now, after 3,000 performances, the show became one of the longest running one man comedy shows in history. Abby continues to manage Steve’s career.

A New Magical Story Design team transforms Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella
H
ow do you create a magical world for Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which opens the new PNC Broadway Lights season next month? William Ivey Long, who won the Tony Award for his costumes for the show, says you have to think of it as a period piece: “It’s a fairy tale. In fact, that’s the period: fairy tale.” How the Magic is Made • William Ivey Long has designed 330 sumptuous period costumes for Cinderella, which is presented in Anna Louizos’ equally sumptuous forestinspired setting. • Both designers say they had long discussions with director Mark Brokaw for this revisionist telling of the traditional story, which features Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic songs with a cheeky new script by playwright Douglas Carter Beane. • Cinderella and her stepmother and stepsisters live in a cottage, both surrounded by and invaded by the forest. “You can always sense nature around the house,” Louizos says. “Even the vines are crawling up and covering up some of the wallpaper.” • William Ivey Long’s costumes – which reference medieval knights, the Flemish painter Breughel, and the French court of Catherine de Medici – are also inspired by nature. “The whole world of Cinderella takes place in the forest,” he says, showing costume sketches. “And when you start with the forest, that means everything’s growing, and flo a and fauna, and so, by extension, butterfli s and moths.” • Of course, butterfli s and moths transform from caterpillars, and

transformation is a big theme in Cinderella. Long has designed jawdropping costume changes in both acts, where Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother go from rags to ballgowns in the blink of an eye, right in front of the audience. Anna Louizos thinks this version of Cinderella is a fairy tale that will appeal to everyone: “We approached it as any other brand new musical. It’s not a children’s show; it’s a Broadway show that adults should be able to appreciate and enjoy and be entertained just as much as children would.” Continued on Page 22

Memories of Cinderella is a person’s true self that shines through, and that you can be whatever you dream.”
“I remember seeing the movie version of Cinderella as a very little girl and I loved every second of it. I'm really excited to see this new production because I’m certain it will combine the two things I love about the story, the dancing and the songs, in the very best way. Here's to hoping I can crush on this prince, too.”
– Vera Helton, theater fan
“As a kid, I used to watch Cinderella every single time I was sick and lying on the couch. I just couldn’t get enough of the story, the music and all of the magic! I can’t wait to see a new version of the story come to life on stage.”
– WBTV News anchor Kristen Miranda
“The beauty of Cinderella centered around her gracious, lovely and even sophisticated personality is what drew me to this character as a child. It was this beauty that showed through regardless of her clothes, bedroom, and the station she held in life. She was a magnetic personality that made all else irrelevant. It served to all – women and men, girls and boys – that it
– Phoebe Costa, Blumenthal staff member
“Like many little girls, I was introduced to the Cinderella story at a young age. I loved it when she finally met her rince! I am a newlywed now, just married in August, and the fairytale is renewed for me as I realize dreams really can come true.” – Channel 9 Evening News anchor Erica Bryant
