The idea of a sequel is born after a conversation between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Phantom designer Maria Björnson where the two pitch that The Phantom could reside above New York City in Manhattan’s first penthouse.

19 91

A documentary about the Coney Island Fairground captivates Lloyd Webber, becoming the setting for his new musical.

19 92

Lloyd Webber partners with Frederick Forsyth to write the story, though it does not develop into a stage show. Forsyth later incorporates some of these ideas into his novella The Phantom of Manhattan.

2007

After a lapse in production, the project begins again when Ben Elton is brought on board to help develop a story. His suggestion to continue The Phantom’s story with many of the original characters is a hit. Continued on Next Page

Opera Carolina

There Seems to be a Revolution Happening Opera Carolina’s season honors women’s voices shaping politics and creating social change

“T

here are dozens of examples of strong, fierce women in opera,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor at Opera Carolina. “More often than not, however, female characters in opera are victims or a love interests, rather than women who take control of their lives. This season, we're celebrating powerful women – those who are smart, noble and who live unapologetically” The 70th Season (and its Heroines) • The Grand Opera season opens in November with Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment. Marie (played by Sarah Coburn) is a spirited young woman who was orphaned as an infant and improbably raised by a French army regiment. Unaware of her aristocratic lineage, she falls for a handsome peasant and is forced to decide between love and social status. Nov. 10, 15, and 18.

• Second in the series is the tragicomic Carmen, an opera in four acts by Georges Bizet. Carmen (Alyson Cambridge) drinks, smokes and gets what she wants. But her gypsy spirit will ultimately prove her undoing. When she chooses bullfighter Escamillo over Don Jose, she meets her demise. Yet she’s not tragic. She would rather live fully than play it safe. Even in death, Carmen is a feminist heroine. Jan. 19, 20, and 24. • Closing out the Grand Opera season is Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Beautiful, educated Tatyana (Melinda Whittington) is rejected when she declares her love for Eugene (Alexy Lavrov), a rich playboy. Soon after, he kills his best friend in a duel. Years later, Eugene returns from selfimposed exile to discover Tatyana married to a prince. He realizes – too late – his love for her. May 9, 11 and 12.

REMEMBERING ROBBIE JAEGER

e have some new faces on our stage tonight that we hope you will warmly welcome. But there is one face you will not see, and one we sorely miss. Robbie Jaeger. Robbie was an integral part of Charlotte Squawks for 11 years. His talent was enormous, and his spirit was immense. He made our rehearsals and the time we spend backstage even more fun than the show onstage. He had many memorable moments, but perhaps none as unforgettable as his recurring portrayal of Mr. Jenkins in our many spoofs of the Morris Jenkins TV commercials. His final performance in that role was a re-creation of the last scene in Dirty Dancing where he played Baby, including her famous leap from the stage, which we accomplished just like Patrick Swayze did – with a ladder. Robbie’s presence and humor made it the best thing we’ve ever done. And he would tell you so himself. Robbie passed away last year unexpectedly, and he leaves behind legions of fans and friends

Robbie Jaeger as Mr. Jenkins.

who loved him dearly. Robbie is not with us onstage tonight, but he is in our hearts, our minds and our memories – and we hope yours, too. The entire cast and crew dedicates this show to Robbie. Robbie, thank you for being a friend.

WHO'S WHO in the CAST ASHBY BLAKELY (Performer) is thrilled to be making his Squawks debut! You may have seen him as a Wolf, Toad, Moose, Bunny, Dog, Dancing Cupcake (with legs for days), or a myriad of other characters at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. You possibly saw his award-winning turn as Mother Superior in The Divine Sister at Actors Theatre of Charlotte. If you have been a Charlotte Theatre goer for a while, you may have been fortunate enough to have seen him in his 2003 Charlotte acting debut as Chorus Member No. 3 in Evita, which garnished him tens of compliments. Perhaps you caught Ashby in one of his many leading roles at Central Piedmont. Ashby is much too humble to admit it, but he has had multiple nominations and countless glowing reviews since arriving on the Charlotte Theatre scene. Whether you’ve seen him before or not, you’re seeing him tonight and he’s excited that you are here! Ashby definitely didn’t write this about himself. LINDA BOOTH (Choreographer) is thrilled to be squawking for her eighth season. She was honored to help Blumenthal celebrate its 25th season this year, staging the gala featuring Leslie Odom Jr., and to choreograph the William Ivey Long tribute, featuring Laura Osnes, Andy Karl, Christine Ebersole and Bebe Winans. As a teaching artist, Linda has worked with over 20,000 youths, and she has choreographed 200-plus productions in regional, educational and professional theater. 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

MIKE COLLINS (Executive Producer, Director and Performer). When not doing everything you see above, as well as the cast’s laundry and taking their lunch orders, Mike hosts “Charlotte Talks” on WFAE, 90.7FM, which just celebrated its 20th anniversary. Against his better judgment, he has been with Charlotte Squawks since the very beginning and has directed the last nine editions. All kidding aside, he is privileged to work with the talented people you will see on this stage tonight and those who labor tirelessly behind-the-scenes to make this show happen. Mike has worked with other area theaters as both an actor and director, but this show is unique because it is entirely original, except for all the music we steal from others. You know and can probably sing all the songs in tonight’s show, but if you would please take just a little direction from the director: don’t. We changed all the words. OLIVIA EDGE (Performer) is thrilled to return to Charlotte Squawks for her second year. You may have recently seen Olivia at The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte portraying Maurice in Madagascar, Luanne in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever or Mrs. Andrew in Disney’s Mary Poppins. Some of her other Children’s Theatre of Charlotte productions include Go, Dog, Go! (Red Dog), Elephant and Piggie, We Are in a Play (Squirrelle), Pinkalicious (Ensemble), The Secret Garden (Alice/Mrs. Winthrop), and Seussical (Mrs. Mayor,

9D

WHO'S WHO in the CAST ensemble). At the Actor's Theatre of Charlotte, she has performed in The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical (Linoleum) and Batboy the Musical (Ruthie/Ned). Some Central Piedmont Community College Summer Theatre credits include Legally Blonde (Paulette), Into the Woods (Witch), Cats (Grizabella), Anything Goes (Reno Sweeney), and 42nd Street (Maggie). Olivia is a graduate of Vanderbilt University. She has been married to her husband, Biff, for 18 years and is blessed to be Mommy to Eli and Julia. She is so grateful for all the love and support of her family and friends and for the abundant grace she receives daily from above. ANDY FAULKENBERRY (Performer) is beyond thrilled to be making his second appearance in Charlotte Squawks! While this is only his second year as a Squawker, he is no stranger to the theater community having performed in numerous theatrical productions, cabarets, concerts, and charity events with local performing arts groups, including Theatre Charlotte, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, CPCC Theatre, Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte, Carolina Voices, Fort Mill Community Playhouse, Carowinds, as well as others. In addition to performing, Andy has also enjoyed directing, choreographing, music directing and serving as a Theatre Arts teacher for numerous theatrical companies, festivals, churches, schools and drama camps throughout the Carolinas. In 2014, Andy was a recipient of the Metrolina Theatre Association’s Best Lead Actor in a Musical award for his role as Princeton/Rod in Theatre Charlotte’s production of Avenue Q, and he was also nominated for Creative Loafing’s Theatre Newcomer of the Year in 2009. “Your deeds are your monuments.” TAYLOR GOODWIN (Performer) is a freshman musical theater major at Winthrop University and made her Winthrop debut as Hud in Hair. Although this was her first college production, she is no stranger to the stage as she loved performing in shows at her high school, as well as in community theaters in her hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. She is very excited to now be a part of this season of Charlotte Squawks with such an amazing cast and crew. She would also like to thank God and her family for all of their support in doing what she loves. KEVIN HARRIS (Performer) is happy to be back after a minor mishap ... He has been involved in area theater for 35 years! His favorite roles include Joe (Showboat), Jim (Big River), Rocky (Rocky Horror), Lion (The Wiz), husband, father, grandfather and some memorable roles in Charlotte Squawks! He cherishes his role as "The Best Interpretive Dancer" on the team. Thanks to all

9E

who helped him on the road to recovery, especially his wife, Carmen, and children, Kevin Jamaal, Elyse and Rachael. Special shout to Gabrielle, Jasmine, and Annabelle. He is a massage therapist and reiki master. JOHANNA JOWETT (Performer) began her journey into comedy as a small child. She discovered that she had the ability to make her grandmother wet her pants if she made her laugh hard enough. Johanna was then taught the invaluable lesson, by her much funnier sister, that she could also (occasionally) get out of trouble by making her mother laugh. She has happily returned to Squawks to continue achieving her goal of making people wet their pants and/or getting out of trouble, although she is rarely successful with either. Johanna has been seen in commercials, on television and in films, and is currently a casting director with Corrigan and Johnston. She would like to thank Mike, Brian, Jeana and Linda, in addition to the incredible musicians, crew and fellow cast mates, for their love, patience and support. She is especially grateful to Greg for being the most ruggedly handsome and amazing boyfriend ever. Johanna dedicates this performance to Robbie Jaeger … one of the funniest and most talented individuals she’s ever had the good fortune to perform with, and adore. BRIAN KAHN (Producer, Book, Lyrics and PowerPoint Design). When he’s not writing musical parodies, Brian is a litigation partner at the law firm of McGuireWoods, LLP, specializing in complex business disputes and financial services litigation. Prior written works include the last 13 Squawks and countless legal briefs filed in courts throughout the nation. Brian is not in the show this year because he has 10-year-old triplet boys and a 7-year-old (who thinks he’s P.T. Barnum), and he likes to see them on occasion. Brian would like to thank his wife, Raizel, for allowing him to write this year's show and promises to stop telling that they can’t go to the Great Wolf Lodge because the zombie apocalypse has broken out there (even though he’s certain it will). SUSAN ROBERTS KNOWLSON (Performer) is thrilled to be squawking again this year with some of her favorite people! She has been seen across the country in national tours, regional theater, opera, TV and off-Broadway. She has received multiple awards from Charlotte Magazine, Creative Loafing and The Metrolina Theatre Association for her acting. Charlotte audiences may also recognize Susan from performances at Actor’s Theatre, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, CPCC, Opera Carolina, Theatre Charlotte and The Charlotte Symphony. Favorite roles include Eliza Doolittle 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

WHO'S WHO in the CAST in My Fair Lady, Maria in The Sound of Music, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Marian in The Music Man, Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, and many more. Susan also teaches private voice lessons to many of Charlotte’s talented teens. Thanks to Steve, Emma and Selby for all their patience, love and support! This one’s for you, Robbie. CHRIS MILLER (Prop Designer) is ready for a comic break after another busy year working as an artisan plasterer in and around the Queen City. Much like his day job, with Squawks you never know what’s around the next corner. It is just a different kind of creative thought process. Instead of making a domed ceiling, groin vault, curved walls, fireplace surrounds or custom crown moldings, he may be building an 8-foot Mickey or possibly another Prince guitar … we’ll never tell! You’ll have to sit back and enjoy what this talented team has in store for you. Back for his fourth season as prop designer, Chris is always ready to see what the wild imaginations of the production team throw before him. He enjoys sharing the theater experience with his three children, Cody, 15, Dylan, 15, and Sage, 11. It takes a lot of evening and weekend hours, but what better way to introduce the next generation to the cultural experiences Charlotte has to offer in our many theaters. It is the time when he steps outside of the plaster world and into the amazingly talented team that is Squawks. DALLAS MORRIS (Production Stage Manager) has been corralling cats while juggling chainsaws (aka stage managing) since college, but she’s especially pleased to add a third year of managing Charlotte Squawks to her resume. Dallas was the resident stage manager for Children’s Theatre of Charlotte for five seasons, managing such productions as The Secret Garden, Tarzan and The Reluctant Dragon. Other local productions include The Magic of Christmas (three times!) with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and several concerts for Blumenthal Performing Arts. Regionally, Dallas has worked with The Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Public Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, PCPA Theatrefest and Virginia Opera. She attended the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). All of my gratitude to my two loves, Terry and Kai. PATRICK RATCHFORD (Performer) returns to the Squawks family for Charlotte Squawks 14! Once again, there’s no shortage of material for this year’s show. He has worked throughout the region in a variety of roles and has been recognized locally by the Metrolina Theatre Association, Creative Loafing and Charlotte Magazine. Area 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

audiences may recognize him from performances at CP Summer Theatre, Actors Theatre, Charlotte Rep, Opera Carolina, Theatre Charlotte and Blowing Rock Stage Company to name a few. Local audiences have seen him in a number of performances including The Music Man (Harold Hill) and Annie Get Your Gun (Frank Butler), Bat Boy (Sheriff/Pan), Ragtime (Father) and Mamma Mia! (Bill Austin). LUCIA STETSON (Performer) is back to squawk for her life for the fourth time. When she’s not performing in this tacky little “Saturday Night Live” knockoff, you can see Lucia performing around town. Local credits include Evita (Eva Peron), Ragtime (Mother), Les Misérables (Fantine), Scarlet Pimpernel (Marguerite St. Just), Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical (DoraLee), Monty Python’s Spamalot (Lady of the Lake), Suessical the Musical (Mazie La Bird), The Sound of Music (Maria) and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (Betty Hanes). A transplant from New York City, Lucia is happy to be a resident of the Queen City and a return Squawker, as well as mother to Izzy and AJ, and a nagging wife to her husband, Jeff. This year, every squawk she squeaks is in memory of her dear friend in this world and the next, Robbie Jaeger. We will never let go, Mr. Jenkins. DEONTE STREETER (Performer) has appeared in several theater productions. You may have seen him in Legally Blonde, Heathers the Musical, Things My Mother Taught Me and The Wiz, to name a few. Deonte is currently studying at Winthrop University and is set to graduate with a bachelor’s in musical theater next spring. A native of Lexington, South Carolina, Deonte now resides in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with his wife. They are expecting their first child this November! He is so excited to be working on such an awesome show with such an awesome cast and crew. Deonte is passionate about growing in his art and feels that his future is going to be bright. He would like to first thank God, his family, and his colleagues for their love and support. LIZ WOOLEY (Assistant Stage Manager) is a Charlotte native who has had the good fortune to work in the arts since leaving college in 2002. With her degrees in theater and performing arts management, she has been able to fulfill her passion of managing the arts in various fields. While working in corporate America, her stage management credits include Harvey (2004) with CPCC; Marilyn Carter, Tavern Shakespeare (2005) and Closer to You (2006) with Collaborative Arts, Dancing at Lughnasa (2007) with Epic Arts Repertory Theatre, and the 2010 Summer Theatre

gain? Really? Again? That is a question we Squawkers get asked all the time. I know you thought America was Great Again, but we keep coming back to ruin it all and you have no one to blame but yourselves. This is your fault. You’re sitting in seats you paid for. You bought a ticket. As our lyricist, Brian Kahn says in the opening number: “Apparently, it’s what Mike Collins you want. Apparently, it’s what you need. Dear God, what is wrong with you?” Think about that as you unwrap your noisy candy and down your fifth vodka tonic after intermission. (By the way, it is highly recommended you utilize the full services of the lobby bar. We don’t encourage overconsumption, just enough so you won’t remember anything you saw here tonight. Then, Uber home.)

works as operations manager with the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a division of the Charlotte Regional Visitors’ Authority. She’s grateful for the chance to work as assistant stage manager on the 14th year of Charlotte Squawks and reconnect with familiar friends and colleagues.

So, we are back for the 14th time to take on Charlotte’s foibles and failures. Though we are loath to admit it, this year, we’ve also included some of its successes. All hail Dena Diorio. Most cities don’t have a Charlotte Squawks. That would be foolish. I mean why would Nashville want to see Charlotte Squawks? But then why does Charlotte want to see it? But the bottom line is most cities don’t have an equivalent to what you’re about to endure. They don’t have performers who could otherwise be gainfully employed doing high quality shows, but who instead choose to be in something like this, trashing the city they love. Other cities have not put themselves through this kind of punishment 14 years in a row, so that puts our town in a special category. We’re confident enough to be able to laugh at ourselves. You won’t see them doing this in Fuquay-Varina! So, no matter what happens tonight, hold your head up, laugh loudly, and tell your friends and neighbors what a great time you had. After all, it’s 2018. Lying is in.

WRITER'S NOTES BY BRIAN KAHN

harlotte Squawks is 14. That awkward age: too young to drive, too old to date Roy Moore. To be clear, none of us understand how we’ve made it this long. We’ve now surpassed the run of Jim and Tammy Bakker’s PTL Club show – and we’ve dealt with more scandals, false idols and bad makeup than they ever did … okay, maybe Brian Kahn not, but it’s close. Fourteen is a surprisingly boring number by the way. Franklin Pierce was our 14th president. Remember him? Exactly. The 14th element is silicon. How exciting. Then, there’s Feb. 14, the day men scramble to buy stuff for their wives that doesn’t look like it came from CVS. And 14 is the number of days in a “Fortnite” which, I understand from my wife, is a popular video game that my kids are not allowed to play. Like I said, not much going on with 14. On the other hand, everyone knows that O Fourteena! is a play on “O Fourtuna!” the title of 9G

a medieval Latin Goliardic poem from the early 13th century, part of the collection known as the “Carmina Burana.” And it goes without saying that the basis of the poem is a complaint about Fortuna, the inexorable fate that rules both gods and men in Roman and Greek mythology. So that was the obvious choice for the title. I mean, we’re not a bunch of uncultured idiots, right? Don’t answer that. Speaking of which, congratulations to Mike Collins for his 20th year at Charlotte Talks! I know – we’re thinking it too – can it only have been 20 years? Every show seems like an eternity! Anyway, I wanted to take a second to talk about this show. O Fourteena! is a satirical parody show that is supposed to be mostly humorous. But, just a heads up, there are a few pure satire songs this year that aren’t meant to be “funny.” We’ve done this before with HB2, the Boston Marathon bomb, etc., but if you’re new to the show, we wanted to warn you. So get ready to laugh, sing and maybe think a bit. And if it pisses you off, that’s okay, too. Actually, that’s kind of the point. 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

Charlotte's Comedy Central Blumenthal Welcomes a Robust Comedy Lineup

C

omedy fans of all ages can enjoy the upcoming lineup of funny shows at Blumenthal Performing Arts, from Miranda Sings’ adolescent satire to the relatable hilarity of modern struggles explored in Brian Regan’s stand-up and in One Funny Mother. Plus, stay tuned for information about Blumenthal's all-new Queen City Comedy Experience taking over Spirit Square Sept. 27-30. The event will feature some of the best stand-up and improv talent from all over the country and from right here in Charlotte! Details to be announced soon. Miranda Sings Live … No Offense July 24 • Knight Theater Miranda Sings is not just another egotistical internetbased songstress. She is the loudmouthed, red-lipped creation of Colleen Ballinger, whose vocal training and comedic facility pushed her Miranda Sings to parody the many young singers with a lot of confidence and considerably less talent. Colleen’s portrayal of Miranda has led to more than 20 million social media followers, the Netflix Original series “Haters Back Off” and an international live tour filled with Miranda’s signature vocal stylings, absurdist rants and introspective (albeit questionable) advice. Brian Regan Sept. 27 • Belk Theater After three decades of entertaining

crowds across the country, Brian Regan is not letting up and seems to never run out of comedic fodder. His ability to turn mundane tales of doctor appointments and errands into hysterical shows Brian Regan has propelled him to become one of the most respected comedians in America. With seven hour-long releases including the first live broadcast in Comedy Central’s history and a multispecial deal with Netflix, Regan is back on the road with his ambitious new tour. One Funny Mother Nov. 8-10 • Stage Door Theater With her days parading around pageant stages seemingly long behind her, Dena Blizzard enters a new stage of life as a wife and mother of three. While cleaning her house Dena Blizzard in preparation for a highly anticipated girls night out, the former Miss New Jersey infuses her musings on the chaos and craziness of parenting with sharp wit and hilarity. Dena brings her adventures in motherhood to light in an outrageous, sidesplitting one-woman show that resonates with anyone who is a mom, has a mom or is married to a mom.

Sounds on the Square at Spirit Square

Sounds on the Square Offers Free Friday Entertainment

n the after-work hours when shadows lengthen and the warm pulse of summer stirs excitement, there is no better way to greet the weekend than with outdoor entertainment. Sounds on the Square returns to the plaza outside of Spirit Square with diverse artists that are local to Charlotte and from around the Southeast. Every Friday throughout the summer, various bands and performers will play a free set for audiences. Acts include Latin rhythms, country and blues musicians, aerialists, indie rock groups and more. The summer series launched last year, drawing crowds of Blumenthal regulars and new faces from the Charlotte community to enjoy the local arts scene.

“When we were making plans … for 2017, they mentioned this new opportunity of Sounds on the Square,” says Executive Director Kelly Finley of her group Girls Rock Charlotte, which has performed at Sounds on the Square for the past two years. “We always try to create opportunity for our youth – campers and young volunteers – to feel the pride, camaraderie and joy that you get when you work together as a band to rock a stage and an audience.” Sounds on the Square events are held every Friday through Aug. 31 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Pack your lawn chairs and bring the entire family for a summer of tunes and treats on the Square.

Charlotte Symphony’s 2018-19 season

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
