This concert features an all Duke Ellington program, spanning from his early hits to his later suites. In this high-energy performance, Marsalis, bassist Rodney Whitaker, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and 4

She’s joined onstage by the Darrell Green Trio with guest appearances by trumpeter Marsalis. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members Carlos Henriquez on bass, Kenny

At last year’s Jazz Festival, above, the second line parade makes its way through uptown; below left, jazz artists perform in an outdoor concert; and below right, a crowd gathers for a jazz performance.
FREE EVENTS Last year’s popular Late Night Jam Sessions return to the basement of Knight Theater Friday and Saturday nights. “It’s a very cool speakeasy environment,” says Gabbard. The New Orlean’s style second line parade, a perennial favorite, returns too with a new time slot: noon Thursday, May 2. “We’re hopeful that workers will pour out of those office towers and join the second line,” says Gabbard. Enjoy lunchtime and happy hour shows throughout the week at the Levine Outdoor Pavilion with performances by
some of the leading local and regional artists. And speaking of local stand outs – don’t miss the finals of the Loonis McGlohon Young Jazz Artist Competition under the Jazz Tent at Romare Bearden Park May 3. The Charlotte Jazz Festival is more than a celebration of great music and exceptional artists. It’s an opportunity to bring the community together. “The social aspect is really important to us,” says Gabbard. “We’re trying to use jazz as the great connector to nurture relationships and good vibes between family members.”

We are thrilled to share our art with you once again and look forward to many more visits to come. — Leah Keith, artistic director

WHO’S WHO Malena, Mara Martinez, Andres Peña, Pilar Ortega, Juan Carmona, David Panigua, Juaniare, Nina de los Reyes, Jesus Carmona and Carmen Ledesma. In 2010, he moved to the United States and is one of the most in-demand singers in this hemisphere. Jose has also had the honor to sing for San Francisco Opera’s Giselle, and he is the flamenco singer for the Aspen Ballet’s Juan Siddi Company, touring nationally and most recently at the Joyce Theater in New York City last spring. AMPARO HEREDIA (Singer) is a gypsy singer from Malaga, Spain. She is a scion of an important gypsy flamenco family, daughter of the mythical Rafaela “La Repompa” and of the great flamenco guitarist Luis Heredia, and niece of la Repompa de Málaga, singer who gave name to the Tangos de Málaga, Tangos de la Repompa, and who greatly influenced the feminine voice in today’s flamenco singing, especially in bulerias and in fandangos. Amparo began to sing at 16 years old in Miami, under the tutelage of Juan de Alba in the Tablao de Costa Blanca. Despite her young age, she toured throughout the most important tablaos of the United States, such as Tablao Triana, Tablao “Cacharritos” and to Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Subsequently, she was a member of Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana for many years, performing at Symphony Space in NYC as well as traveling as invited artist to the tablao “El Flamenco” of México, D.C., accompanying the prestigious dancers who passed through. Upon her return to Spain, she immediately began performing in the most important tablaos of Madrid, most notably Casa Patas. Her reputation began to grow, and she was a requested singer by the majority of the dancers. Additionally she sang in the company of la Lupi, and with the dancer Juan Andrés Maya, with whom she toured all of Spain with his shows Furia Maya, La Pasión, Tres Homenajes y Salvajes. While Amparo Heredia has dedicated her art and her voice to sing for dance, she is also dedicated to singing “alante,” and has engaged in recital tours across the peñas flamencas of Málaga and Andalucía such as the Peña Juan Brevas de Málaga, Peña el Piyayo, Peña la Platería de Granada, Peña Torres Macarena de Sevilla etc., and in important flamenco festivals such as the II Bienal de Málaga, Veranos del Corral del Carbón de Granada, Otoños Flamencos de Granada, the flamenco circuit of the Diputación de Málaga “Nos vemos en tu Peña,” an homage to Enrique Morente in the Generalife gardens of the Alhambra, where she won the first prize of the Peña Flamenca el Canario in 2011. She is the recipient of many awards, including the prize for seguiriya and tangos in Festival de Cante de las Minas de la Unión (2015), the first prize in the Concurso Mirando a la Torre de Alhaurín de la Torre de Málaga (2016), first prize por Peteneras in the Concurso de Cante Flamenco Niño del Museo de Adamuz de Córdoba (2016), second prize in the Concurso de los Montes en Montejicar de Granada (2016), and second prize 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

Additionally, he has toured with the company of maestro Luis Dávila “Luisillo” throughout Japan, Mexico, France and Switzerland as a principal dancer. Raul formed an integral part of the company of Rafael Amargo, from 2001 until 2006 as principal dancer and choreographer in the shows “Amargo,” “Tablao,” Enrramblao,” “Intimo” and “Amor Brujo” touring worldwide and culminating in a performance of “Poeta en Nueva York” at City Center in New York City. Since 2006, Raúl has focused on his own creative projects while still being a much sought after guest artist for other flamenco productions. In 2008, Raul created a show that combined hip hop dancers, tap dancers, flamenco and percussion with equal parts humor called “Hermanos de Baile,” which opened in Barcelona to critical acclaim. In 2011, Raul returned to his roots, presenting “Flamenco Inside” at the Teatro Arenal in Madrid, a strictly traditional flamenco show. “Flamenco Inside” has toured Canada, Israel, Mexico and Tokyo. Raul founded his own tablao flamenco, Puro Arte Jerez in 2014, where artists like El Funi, Alejandro Granados, Beatriz Morales and Soraya Clavijo, among others, grace the stage. While running the tablao, Raul continues to guest dance in the famous tablaos of El Corral de la Moreria in Madrid, Los Tarantos, Casa Camarón as well as in flamenco festivals across Spain. Perform With the Charlotte Symphony at Pro-Am
ver wondered what it would be like to perform live on stage with a symphony orchestra? Dust off those instruments and join us at this year’s Pro-Am! A component of the Charlotte Symphony's education and engagement efforts, the annual Pro-Am experience gives community musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside symphony musicians in a professional setting. Participants in this year’s program will spend the afternoon rehearsing side-byside with Charlotte Symphony musicians
under the direction of resident conductor Christopher James Lees in works by Strauss, Fauré and Tchaikovsky in preparation for a free community concert that evening at Knight Theater. Between rehearsal and the performance, participants and Charlotte Symphony musicians will have the opportunity to engage further over a shared meal. The Charlotte Symphony Pro-Am experience is open to any musician 18 and older who plays a traditional symphony instrument. Participants must be able to provide their own instruments.

T
Opera Is for Everyone
o the uninitiated, opera may seem old-fashioned, inaccessible or elite. Allow us to refute some of these misconceptions. 1. I won’t understand it. On the contrary. We provide subtitles in English. Follow the plot and each lyrical line, no matter what language the opera is sung in. 2. Opera is too expensive. Get a single ticket at Opera Carolina for as little as $21. Youths (those under age 18) always get a 50 percent discount. And Student Rush tickets are $10. Group discounts are also available. 3. Opera is for old people. Opera is for all ages. In fact, Opera Carolina’s educational touring company, “Opera Xpress,” serves thousands of area school kids each
year. The young professionals’ group, “Bravo,” offers a variety of opportunities to engage with the opera. These events typically take place around each opera and are free to join. 4. I have to wear fancy clothes. Opera is a great opportunity to dress to the nines if you’d like, but you can wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. Bring out the little black dress … or dress in jeans. After all, art is about expressing one’s self. 5. It’s irrelevant. Opera and classical music provide the very foundation of modern music. Many movies and musicals (Pretty Woman, RENT) have been adapted from operas. Advertisers use operatic tunes to sell everything from corn chips to cars. Opera is everywhere.

Favorite roles she’s performed: Choleric in Balanchine’s Four Temperaments; Grand Pas Classique; Cinderella; the Grey Girl in Jirí Kylián’s Forgotten Land; and Tinker Bell. Favorite thing to do on a day off: Get outside. What powers you as a dancer: I talk a lot about “hunger.” I have hunger for new ballets and choreographers I have never worked with, for new styles I’ve never tried, to see how I will thrive in those environments. A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
