Charlotte Jazz Festival Returns, Bigger and Better

B

lumenthal Performing Arts’ hit jazz festival returns to the Queen City next month, once again featuring the critically acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the leadership of musical director Wynton Marsalis. Presented by The Leon Levine Foundation, Charlotte Jazz Festival 2017 will take place April 17-23 at Knight Theater, Levine Center for the Arts and Romare Bearden Park, with even more to offer than the inaugural sellout year. “The idea of a jazz festival of this magnitude was a longtime dream for many in our city. The huge success of the first year was proof that Charlotte jazz fans were eager and ready for this,” said Blumenthal President and CEO Tom Gabbard. “With Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on board again, along with the exciting new plans for this

second year, we are confident it will be an unforgettable event for our region.” One of the most exciting new elements is the addition of several tented events at Romare Bearden Park. High quality talent will entertain audiences beginning Thursday, April 20, through Sunday, April 23. (The full schedule is available at CharlotteJazzFestival.com.) The final event at the park is free fun for the whole family, as the community is invited to a picnic to celebrate the closing of Charlotte Jazz Festival 2017. Throughout the weekend, festivalgoers can also catch intimate club performances at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture and the Mint Museum. Plus, there will be a jazz brunch at Wells Fargo Atrium and late night jams at the Westin Hotel. The jazz pavilion outside of Knight Theater will offer free lunchtime jazz hours See Charlotte Jazz Festival on Page 6 704.372.1000 | BlumenthalArts.org

and evening happy hours. Other events include the second line parade, youth jazz competition, workshops where kids can get hands-on instruction and much more! The main stage shows at Knight Theater, featuring Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, are sure to delight audiences with Celebrating Dizzy Gillespie on Friday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. and The Jazz Age: Untamed Elegance on Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Leon Levine Foundation has signed on for a second year as a presenting sponsor of the Charlotte Jazz Festival. Executive Director Tom Lawrence says, “We are delighted to partner once again with Blumenthal Performing Arts on this project. The multiday community event led by the vision of Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will have it all: concerts, classes, exhibits, panel

discussions, free performances and more. It’s cultural programs like the Charlotte Jazz Festival that help brighten our city and make it such a special place.” Free Fun on the Plaza – the free programming presented at the pavilion at Levine Center for the Arts throughout the week – is presented by Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation, an affiliate of Foundation for the Carolinas. Foundation for the Carolinas Executive Vice President Brian Collier says, “Foundation for the Carolinas and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation are excited to be a part of this incredibly successful event. We are strong believers in the power of music to bridge differences and build the social capital that is so vital to the success of everyone in our community. Symphony Announces 2017-2018 Season

F

rom Beethoven to beatboxing and Stravinsky to steel pan, the Charlotte Symphony’s exciting 2017-2018 season is an impressive lineup of timeless classics, family fun and cutting-edge newcomers. Classical superstar pianist Lang Lang kicks off the season with an early September gala performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor.” Kicking off the Classical series is Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 9. Acclaimed pianist Leon Fleisher joins Music Director Christopher Warren-Green for Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, and the orchestra celebrates the centennial of American composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth with music from West Side Story. Other Classical highlights include Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and an allAmerican concert featuring works of Gershwin, Copland and the Symphony’s

own artist-in-residence, Mark O’Connor. In an exciting collaboration in April 2018, the Symphony will team up with Charlotte Ballet and local public school students to present Stravinsky’s revolt-inspiring Rite of Spring. The Pops series brings Cirque de la Symphonie back to Charlotte, featuring aerial dance and film scores, plus five performances of Magic of Christmas, Disney’s Fantasia and the music of John Williams, John Denver and Abba. The Musical World of Harry Potter, Stone Soup and a popular shortened version Magic of Christmas matinee all fall in the family-friendly Lollipops series, and altsounds lives up to its name, with concerts featuring steel pan drums, contemporary composers and beatboxing. Experience the emotion of live orchestral performances and join us next season. For a full look at the Charlotte Symphony’s upcoming season, visit charlottesymphony.org. Subscribe today!

Are You Apt to Defend or Bend the Law? Take the Opera Carolina quiz and find out

I

f you were a fan of the cat-and-mouse game Miss Kitty played with Marshal Dillon on “Gunsmoke,” you don't want to miss Puccini's The Girl of the West at Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in April. In Puccini's version, it's the titular girl – Minnie, a gutsy, guntoting saloon owner – who saves the day. Puccini didn't just create an operatic take on the great American Western; he created a feminist hero. Pull up a bar stool and take our quiz to find out which character you'd be – the bandit, Dick Johnson or Sheriff Jack Rance, the good guy in the white cowboy hat. Visit operacarolina.org or call 704-3721000 for tickets to Puccini’s The Girl of the West, a bona fide Western (opera) with a big heart.

Opera Carolina Quiz 4. In the 1977 movie, Smokey and the Bandit, which character do you relate to?

1. Pick a weapon. A. Revolver B. Rifle 2. What is your card game of choice? A. Solitaire B. Poker

A. Smokey B. Bandit 5. When you enter the bar, what do you order?

3. If someone tells you where to find gold, do you ...

A. Water B. Whiskey, neat

A. Find it and turn it in B. Steal it for yourself If you circled mostly A’s, you’re a law-and-order sheriff. If you circled mostly B’s, you’re a bandit staying one step ahead of the law. (And this town ain’t big enough for the both of you.)

Wuthering Heights Adapted to a Ballet

W

uthering Heights, Emily Bronte’s literary masterpiece, is a passionate story of love and revenge boldly adapted into a ballet by Charlotte Ballet Associate Artistic Director Sasha Janes.

Called “king of the pas de deux,” Janes has a reputation for creating ballets that leave the audience as breathless as the dancers. Charlotte Ballet premieres Wuthering Heights this April in Knight Theater.

3 Things to Know About Wuthering Heights It's a Family Affair Janes’ mother, Jennifer Janes, is joining him to design the costumes for Wuthering Heights. The pair has worked together on ballets before, including Dangerous Liaisons, Glass Houses and Carmen. A Bad Romance Wuthering Heights tells the story of the unfortunate lovers Heathcliff and Catherine who, despite a deep affection for one another, are forced to live apart by circumstance and prejudice. “Many

consider Wuthering Heights a story of romance, but it’s so dynamic,” said Janes. “Using ballet to tell the story of the complicated characters and themes is a unique but exciting challenge.” There’s a Bonus Wuthering Heights opens with a performance of contemporary choreographer Alonzo King’s MAP, the first ballet retiring Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux commissioned for the company 20 years ago.

The Square at Spirit Square

Sounds to Fill the Square This Summer

S

ummertime is about to burst into sound with the first annual Sounds on the Square Series. On Friday nights from May through August, everyone is invited for a free musical mélange outside the 7th Street entrance to Spirit Square (facing College Street). Enjoy the summer night air and the performances of local singers and musicians as Blumenthal Performing Arts presents some of the best talent in the Charlotte area, and more. Featured talent includes winners of the Loonis McGlohon Jazz Competition, Blumey Awards winners and nominees, and the spirited musicians of Girls Rock Charlotte. “We always try to create opportunity for our youth – campers and young volunteers – to feel the pride, camaraderie and joy that you get when you work together as a band to rock a stage and an audience,” says Kelly Finley,

founder and executive director of Girls Rock Charlotte. The organization, whose mission is to amplify the confidence of girls and gender diverse youth through the power of music, holds its summer camps at Blumenthal. “When we were making plans with them for 2017, they mentioned this new opportunity of Sounds on the Square," says Finley, "so we said ‘Yes!’…. We love the idea of celebrating our campers and volunteers in this amazing venue” Other musical events will include a Hamilton sing-a-long (just you wait!) and two outdoor movie nights. Sounds on the Square events will be held every Friday night from 7-8:30 p.m., May 5-Aug. 25, rain or shine. Should the weather turn gloomy, the musical merriment will be moved inside Spirit Square. Feel free to bring chairs and a picnic – or purchase food and drinks onsite – and enjoy some superb summer Sounds on the Square!

Spot the Differences Hit Musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch to Play in April

B

rilliantly innovative, heartbreaking and wickedly funny, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the landmark musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wallsmashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage. It’s about finding your other half; it’s the story of the origin of love. Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot) and starring Tony and Olivier award nominee Euan Morton, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the winner of four 2014 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival. It played to record-breaking sellout crowds on Broadway and promises to take Charlotte by storm with what Rolling Stone proclaims is “the best rock musical ever!” In honor of the show’s appearance in Charlotte next month, see if you can spot the three differences in the images at right! (Answers below.)
