Frequently asked questions: Q: Is this family friendly? Can I bring my kids? A: Absolutely. This is a show for all ages! Q: Does Circus 1903 feature a live elephant? A: No. The elephants featured in Circus 1903 are puppets brought to life by the talented team at Significant Object

Popcorn and Opera Opera Carolina and The Met help CMS students experience opera in movies
T
he next best thing to experiencing opera live and in person is seeing it live on the big screen. In 2006, the Metropolitan Opera launched The Met: Live in HD, a series of performance transmissions shown live, in high definition, in select movie theaters. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system has participated in the HD Live in Schools program for several years. Now, Opera Carolina is partnering with CMS and The Met to enhance the program. Partner schools receive preparatory workshops, in-school experiences and a live opera experience in Belk Theater at Opera Carolina’s Student Nights at the Opera, with tickets and transportation funded by Opera Carolina. The Met plans five high definition transmissions this year: • La traviata. • Don Giovanni. • Nabucco. • Eugene Onegin. • Rusalka, which draws source material from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Some students will see La traviata – the Met’s streaming version – next month, which they saw live with Opera Carolina in January. And Opera Carolina is helping
facilitate student discussions on the similarities and differences between the two productions. Not only are CMS students being exposed to opera at a young age (and in a format they’re likely familiar with), but they’re getting prepped in advance with indepth, active exploration. “We’re doing a lot of advance in-school support,” said Ashley Lam, Opera Carolina’s director of education. “And we’re customizing the content of the curriculum based on what each school tells us they need. “We want these lessons to permeate beyond the classroom,” she said. “We start with arts educators – music, band and orchestra leaders … but we’re developing ways those teachers can help other teachers incorporate arts into their classrooms.” Thanks to Opera Carolina, students this year are getting a big dose of art at school and at the movies. Pass the popcorn. CMS schools participating in HD Live in Schools: • Chantilly Montessori • Northwest School of the Arts • East Mecklenburg High • Cochrane Collegiate Academy • Independence High • Randolph Middle
