More than 90 million people around the world have experienced the awe-inspiring visual artistry, the unforgettable music, and the uniquely theatrical storytelling of this Broadway spectacular – one of the most breathtaking and beloved productions ever to grace the stage. Winner of six Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, The Lion King brings together one of the most imaginative creative teams on Broadway. hope and adventure set against an amazing backdrop of stunning visuals. The Lion King also features the extraordinary work of Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan and some of Broadway’s most recognizable music, crafted by Tony Award-winning artists Elton John and Tim Rice. There is simply nothing else like The Lion King. Fun Show Facts: • The North American touring production (launched in April 2002) uses 18 trucks to transport puppets, set pieces and other materials from city to city. • The tour requires three days of advance prep and four days of on-site technical preparation at the respective venue to set up the physical production in each new city. • The most complicated set piece is Pride Rock, which appears five times during each performance. On tour, Pride Rock is a battery-powered set piece that expands out like an accordion to 18 feet wide at its fullest position onstage and compresses to 8 feet when it is offstage in the wings.
• The largest and longest animal in the show is the elephant (nicknamed “Bertha” by the backstage crew when the show premiered in 1997). At 13 feet long and 9 feet wide, the puppet requires four actors to carefully walk her down the orchestra aisle. When not occupied by the actors, the puppet can collapse down flat for convenient backstage storage.
• The tallest animals in the show are the four, 18-foot exotic giraffes from “I Just

Charlotte Squawks Is Back With O Fourteena! A Q&A with show creators Mike Collins and Brian Kahn
W
hat is Charlotte Squawks? It’s “Saturday Night Live” meets Broadway meets our beloved Queen City! Celebrating the 14th edition of Squawks, the creative team of Mike Collins and Brian Kahn collaborate with the area's most talented performers to make fun of pop-culture, sports, life and politics – both local and national. Ahead of its return to Booth Playhouse May 31-June 24, we sat down with Mike and Brian for more on what they’re working on this year. can we expect/look forward Q:toWhat this year at Charlotte Squawks 14: O Fourteena!
Brian: Not sure what you should expect, but we expect nasty letters to the editor, scathing reviews from newspaper critics, and local politicians, athletes and business leaders squirming in their seats. I guess you should look forward to us ruining many of your favorite pop, rock and Broadways songs? Mike: After all these years, you still have expectations? Shame on you. Any new topics you’re trying to Q:work into this year’s lineup? Brian: Nope. Nothing’s happened. Except maybe … the impending Panthers sale, the hacking of Mecklenburg County, our failed Amazon bid, CMS buses catching on fire, the new (baby) faces on City Council, the unfolding Facebook scandal, Roy Cooper vetoing everything, the Me Too Movement, the gold statute missing from Providence and Providence, the opening of light rail to UNCC, bikes strewn everywhere, and whatever is going on in Washington, D.C.
Mike: Wow. Brian really keeps up with the news. I had no idea all those things had happened, but I can tell you what Victor Newman is up to on “The Young and the Restless.” has been around for Q:aSquawks treasured 14 years. Why do you think it resonates so well with Charlotteans?
Mike: It resonates because all of our songs are sung in the key of C – no sharps or flats – just right – so that everyone can sing along. Now, if they would just learn the words before they came to the theater, we’d be in business. Brian: Well, we typically have the show in June and the theater is airconditioned, so that’s a big draw. We are also bitter sarcastic people who have a lot of pent-up anger from having to be polite all of the time – kinda like most of the folks that live here. Continued on Next Page

What would you say to someone Q:who’s never been to Squawks, to convince them otherwise?
Brian: I’d like to say something like “Hey, they’re giving away free cars!” But if I have to say something that’s actually true, maybe I’d tell you that we aren’t your typical theater experience. If you like comedy and don’t offend easily, give us a shot. And we also sell liquor. Mike: We’ve been doing this show for 14 years just so it would be good enough for you to finally give us a shot. You have nothing to lose because, as Brian says, the theater is air conditioned and it’s dark. You can always take a nap and, if you come to a matinee, you can avoid yardwork!

The 2018/19 Opera Carolina Season
I
The revolution will be sung
n the midst of what people are calling the new women’s movement, Opera Carolina chose three operas for the 2018/19 season that feature strong – even defiant – female characters. Opera is bursting with
this archetype. Not all heroines are tragic; many are independent and headstrong. The upcoming season is significant in another way, too. It’s Opera Carolina’s 70th season.

A long tradition of helping our community perform at its best. At Moore & Van Allen we have a long tradition of supporting the arts. Whether they entertain, inspire or simply add beauty to our community, the arts can have an impact on everyone. There are very few things in life that can achieve that. Which, in our minds, is an uncommon art.
