Rick Wallace fulfilled a 55-year dream when he purchased a Harley Davidson, but that dream turned into a nightmare when he wrecked the motorcycle just six weeks later. A severed trachea (windpipe) left him without the ability to speak. Rick found his voice again thanks to the Voice and Swallowing Center at Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates, P.A. (CEENTA). He no longer has the range to sing in the church choir, though he can still sing his granddaughter to sleep. “And that’s good enough for me,” says Rick. Celebrate the ‘Architects of Love’ with Opera Carolina in 2013-2014 Benefit evening previews a 'season of love' with Verdi, Puccini and Wagner

O

pera Carolina’s 2013-2014 Season, underwritten by a significant grant from Wells Fargo Private Bank, previews its “season of love” with a Gala Benefit Concert, titled Art to Poetry to Music, on Sept. 12 at the Knight Theater. The evening features some of Opera Carolina’s most stunning stars performing under the baton of Maestro James Meena and accompanied by the Charlotte Symphony. Art to Poetry to Music, a multimedia event presented in collaboration with The Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University, will fuse together opera, spoken word and power of the visual. The season celebrates love as depicted by three of the greatest opera composers and also commemorates the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s and Wagner’s births. Opera Carolina’s debut of Il Trittico continues the five-year Puccini cycle, in which the company intends to perform all of Puccini’s operas through the spring of 2017. Verdi’s grand tale of love and war, Aida, opens the season Oct. 19, 20, 24 and 27, featuring Opéra de Montréal soprano Othalie Graham; Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Irina Mishura; and internationally acclaimed Italian tenor Antonello Palombi. Puccini’s Il Trittico, three one-act operas created for the Metropolitan Opera, follows on Jan. 18, 23 and 26. Passion and intrigue swirl as a seamless evening unfolds with Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi starring Washington Opera soprano Jill Gardner; Welsh National Opera baritone Chen-Ye Yuan; and Royal Opera Convent Garden tenor Dongwon Shin. The season concludes with Wagner’s haunting tale of love on the high

seas, The Flying Dutchman, on March 22, 27 and 30. Metropolitan Opera bass-baritone Greer Grimsley, Metropolitan Opera tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, and Seattle Opera soprano Elizabeth Kataria lead the cast. All mainstage performances are at the Belk Theater, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Season subscriptions are now on sale at 704-332-7177, ext. 1. Single tickets go on sale Aug. 1 through the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 704-372-1000, or visit www.operacarolina.org. Opera Carolina provides significant discounts for subscribers, as well as discounts for youths and groups.

Gala Benefit Concert Single tickets for Art to Poetry to Music are $40, which include a pre-concert reception, and they go on sale Aug. 1. Season subscribers receive a 50 percent discount. Call 704.372.1000. 12

Classics 2012-13 Season Finale: Beethoven’s 9th

I

n a monumental musical experience, live at Charlotte’s Belk Theater, the Charlotte Symphony will perform Beethoven’s epic “Ode to Joy,” the 9th Symphony, as the season finale. A timeless message of brotherhood and humanity, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is considered by many to be one of the greatest ever contributions to music. Beethoven’s 9th serves as a gateway experience to classical music for many, and a spiritual, musical renewal for repeat listeners. When asked about the piece, Music Director Christopher Warren-Green stated, “How can one describe God?” Although Beethoven was completely deaf by the time he composed Symphony No. 9 in 1824, his mastery of composition, keen ability to interpret vibrations, and innate sense of music gave way to what is almost unanimously regarded as the finest example of his work. The 9th is also known as Beethoven's “choral” symphony because it was the first major composition to incorporate vocals on the same level as the instruments. Beethoven was inspired by Friedrich Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy,” and the poem’s words, with some modifications, serve as the symphony’s lyrics.

Warren-Green will lead the Charlotte Symphony, the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte and internationally acclaimed guest soloists in three performances of Beethoven’s 9th at the Belk Theater: 8 p.m. Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12 – Mother’s Day Matinee Tickets start at $19 and are available at charlottesymphony.org and 704-972-2000. Special prices are available for Sunday’s Mother’s Day Matinee – call the Charlotte Symphony Ticket Office to save on celebrating the moms in your life: 704-972-2000. Classics Season 2013-14 Beethoven’s 9th is the final concert of this season’s Classics Series, and the Charlotte Symphony’s 2013-2014 Classics Series, to open in September, was recently announced. Highlights of the Symphony’s 2013-14 Classics lineup include the celebration of the 100th anniversary of prolific English composer Benjamin Britten, Holst’s “The Planets,” Tchaikovsky's Symphony “Pathetique,” Beethoven's “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6, Symphony No. 8 by Dvorak, Stravinsky's “Petrushka,” and the terrifying “Dies Irae” from Verdi's “Requiem.” As a bonus, preeminent violinist Itzhak Perlman will deliver a special, one-nightonly performance with the Charlotte Symphony on Feb. 15, 2014. Although the concert is not officially part of the symphony's Classics season, 2013-2014 Classics subscribers will benefit from priority opportunity to purchase Perlman tickets. If seats remain, tickets to the Perlman concert will be available to the general public next fall.
