The Man Behind The MEMPHIS Sound Q&A with David Bryan, Tony®- and Grammy®-winning composer and rocker
T
write the lyrics and send it to them. I picked “The Music of My Soul” since it was the journey of the lead character’s world, the heartbeat of Huey. Now, I talked to them at about noon and I knew 6:30 was my FedEx deadline. I went down to my studio, got the drumbeat, wrote out lyrics, put all the keyboards down, sang it, did the background vocals, burned it on to a CD and FedEx-ed it so he [Joe DiPietro, who wrote the book for MEMPHIS] would have it first thing in the morning.
he Tony®-Award winning MEMPHIS tells the powerful tale of a real-life forbidden love story set in the late ’50s in a Southern city. The songs not only reflect the era and honor the city’s musical legacy, but the music is so good that you’ll find yourself listening to the soundtrack over and over. The man behind the sound is David Bryan, the Tony®- and Grammy®winning composer, songwriter, singer, programmer and founding member of the band Bon Jovi. (He also composed The Toxic Avenger. musical.) A true music lover, as evidenced by his solo album “Lunar Eclipse,” which highlights his blues, jazz, rock and roll and classical background, Bryan has been in the music business for more than 20 years.
Amazing. I guess he liked it. He got it the next morning and couldn’t believe it. Our relationship started there. That song is still in the show. Joe wanted a composer who was a rock ‘n’ roll guy. That guy was me.
How did you get involved in MEMPHIS?
How do you and Joe collaborate to write a song? Do you write the music first? Do you sit down and have an idea?
I’m a songwriter. I just want to write songs, outside of the band, just write for different people. That’s what I was doing for my publisher. Then the agent god came down and gave me the MEMPHIS script. When I was reading it through, I heard the music, what you see today on stage, in my head. So, I just started writing. Then I told them I was also a lyricist and asked if I could mess around with the lyrics. They said to pick a song,
Joe DiPietro and David Bryan at the Tony Awards®.
Yes and yes and yes. There is no standard. I’ll work on stuff or I’ll start some lyrics and he’ll start some lyrics. There’s no real set way. That’s the beauty of collaboration. He and I sit down and we can put out one or two songs a day. We get on the same page pretty quick.

What will audiences walk away with at the end of MEMPHIS? It’s a gripping story, a moment in America that was an important time of change. We’re never preachy. When you preach something at somebody, it doesn’t come across as strong as when it unfolds and you realize it for yourself. Audiences will walk away feeling positive that the world is a better place because we are smarter every day and learning from our mistakes and there are songs you can walk out singing. How involved are you in the national tour?
Original Broadway Cast of MEMPHIS. Photo by Joan Marcus
Anything that has to do with my work, I’m involved 100%. From the casting of MEMPHIS, to the set design, to the costumes, to fiduciary questions, to theaters, to lighting, auditions, you name it. Our team is a fabulous creative team with great producers, Christopher [Ashley] is a great director, Sergio [Trujillo] is a great choreographer…they’re retooling it for the road, but I’m involved in every inch of it. Are you and Joe [DiPietro] are working on a new musical called “Chasing the Song”? It’s about ’60s songwriters and is still in development. We have about 17 songs written for it. How do you feel about you and Joe being called the modern day Rodgers and Hammerstein? It’s not a bad moniker. We enjoy each other’s work. We enjoy each other’s company. We’re each other’s best critic and we’re not afraid to try something, we give ourselves that freedom.

Meet Pete Walker
2011 Princess Grace Fellowship Award Winner
N
orth Carolina Dance Theatre’s Pete Walker is a recipient of the 2011 Princess Grace Fellowship Award. Pete joins the ranks of other extremely gifted and promising artists in the areas of theater, dance, choreography and film. The Princess Grace Fellowship Award continues the legacy of Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco, who anonymously helped emerging artists pursue their artistic goals during her lifetime. “I feel so fortunate to receive the 2011 Princess Grace Fellowship Award,” said Pete. “It gives me an overwhelming vote of confidence that dance is the right thing for me to do in my life.” Pete began his dance training in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. During his sophomore year of high school, he was accepted into Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts
on full scholarship. Pete credits his family, especially his mother, for igniting his passion to become a professional dancer. In 2010 Pete joined North Carolina Dance Theatre 2 and was quickly promoted to the first company. His first season with Dance Theatre included dancing in George Balanchine’s deux Stars and Stripes pas de deux, Jiri Bubenicek’s Le Souffle de l’Esprit, Sasha Janes’ Last Lost Chance Dwight Rhoden’s Chance, Reflections Of... and Twyla Tharp’s The Golden Section. “We are extremely proud of Pete for this great honor,” said NC Dance Theatre President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “His journey as a dancer has just started, and we are thrilled to be a part of this exciting moment in his career.” See Pete perform in NC Dance Theatre’s Innovative Works, November 3-19, and in Nutcracker December 9-18. “Performing on the stage and sometimes directly above the orchestra, the agile cast of Cirque de la Symphonie dazzled the audience and often drew gasps as they soared, balanced and contorted, to the delight of all.” –The Indianapolis Examiner Enjoy recognizable favorites such as Saint-Saen’s Danse Bacchanale, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries and selections from Carmen while watching suspended dancers and contortionist feats in daring displays of musical and physical ingenuity. See gravity defeated. Watch acrobats soar above oboes and dancers whirl among the violins. Be amazed at the strength and grace of the actors matched with the majesty and splendor of the Charlotte Symphony. The CSO Pops Series features artists such as Natalie Cole, Disney in Concert, A John Williams Spectacular and many more. lying hula hoops, juggling pins and one-armed handstands are not typical Symphony fare. But on November 25 & 26, in Cirque de la Symphonie, audiences will enjoy all that and more. Led by Associate Conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos, the Charlotte Symphony will unite with a troupe of acrobats and actors for a tour de force for the eyes and ears. A production formed to combine the magic of circuses and symphonies, Cirque de la Symphonie is an exciting adaptation uniting musical and acrobatic performances. Artists include amazing aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, mimes and magicians, backed by the entire Symphony. The Cirque performance is uniquely adapted to share the stage with a full performing orchestra, with each artist’s performance is professionally choreographed to classical masterpieces and popular contemporary music. The combination of orchestra musicians and circus performers has been dubbed “astonishing” by The Seattle Times and the The Indianapolis Examiner called Cirque de la Symphonie “exquisite and breathtaking.”

Broadway Extras!
Everything You Want to Know About RocK of AgES! (but were afraid to ask) Broadway show!
What is ROCK OF AGES about? In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of the 80s. Don’t miss this awesomely good time about dreaming big, playing loud and partying on! Whose music will I hear in the show? ROCK OF AGES features the tunes of all your ’80s favorites, including REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Poison, Foreigner, Pat Benatar,Twisted Sister, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, Quarterflash, Asia and more!
Is ROCK OF AGES appropriate for children? ROCK OF AGES is a full-out, blast-off, holdonto-your-hairspray celebration of the great rock music of the ’80s, and you might be wondering – or, admit it, hoping –your kids will love it as much as you will. Well, we think they will, but you should know that some of the costumes, dancing and language might not be appropriate for kids under age 14. Teens might dig it because it’s totally awesome, sort of like a music video brought to life, complete with hot dancers and blazing guitar licks. We suggest you use your best judgment about whether or not the show is appropriate for them. Remember, if you do bring them, they’ll may see you rockin’ like you did back in the day. Just so you know.

Will my grandparents enjoy ROCK OF AGES? Depends on how cool they are. If your grandma has “I Wanna ROCK!” as her ringtone, buy that girl a ticket TODAY!
Anything else special I should know? Well, the show was nominated for five – count ‘em – five Tony® awards: Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (Constantine Maroulis), Best Director (Kristin Hanggi), Best Costume Design (Gregory Gale) and Best Sound Design (Peter Hylenski), which makes us feel pretty special!
I’m not familiar with ’80s music, will I like ROCK OF AGES? The show is packed with “feel good power ballads” that rose to huge popularity in the 1980s. They feature distorted guitar riffs based around power chords, catchy hooks and hard-hitting drumming. There are tons of guitar solos and many of the songs have catchy “sing-along” choruses and clear vocals.
Is there loud music in the show? Are there strobe lights? Well, it’s a rock musical set in the late ’80s, and you’re gonna feel like you’re at a rock concert during parts of it and there are all kinds of special visual effects. However, we are no louder than any other rockin’
