IN HIS OWN WORDS:

Sir Elton John Explains Why BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL Struck A Chord With Him exceeded my wildest dreams. “To see Billy literally dance his way out of the bleak and cruel environment created by the British mining industry’s demise was inspirational. To see Billy’s family rally behind his artistic gift moved me to tears. By the screening’s end, the audience response was overwhelming. “The film had really got under my skin. … At the after-party, someone suggested that Billy Elliot would make the most amazing stage musical. The film’s TRex soundtrack was brilliant, but I couldn’t imagine the opportunity to create original compositions for a story that is so naturally rooted in music. “Years later when Working Title and Old Vic Productions approached me about the possibly working on the musical, I was immediately interested. Lee Hall signed on to adapt his screenplay but wanted to have a crack at writing his libretto. “Most of my musical life has been

I

t is not very often you can say a film changes your life. I had no idea what I was walking into when I accepted an invitation to the premiere of Billy Elliot at the Cannes ELTON JOHN Film Festival in 2000. “Like Billy, the opportunity to express myself artistically was a passport to a better, more fulfilling life. As a child, I dreamt of a career in music, escaping into my treasured record collection for inspiration and hope. “It was the unfailing support of my mother and grandmother that helped me to achieve my ambitions. With their encouragement and a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, I started building a foundation that has allowed me to rejoice in a musical career that has LIAM MOWER (BILLY) AND POLICE SHIELDS. spent writing to Bernie Taupin’s wonderful words, but collaborating with another brilliant lyricist, Tim Rice, for The Lion King and AIDA, was hugely enjoyable. The right lyricist is essential as all of my melodies are lyrically driven. “Lee Hall had never written a lyric in his life, but you wouldn’t know it from the first words received via fax in Atlanta. … Lee’s entire libretto was equally inspirational. The melodies flowed right out of me. Perhaps the words that touched me most are those to ‘Electricity.’ “When Billy is asked at The Royal Ballet School auditions how he feels when he dances, his response comes very close to summing it up for how it feels when I write music: ‘I haven’t got the words. It’s a feeling that you can’t control. I suppose it’s like forgetting, losing who you are. And at the same time something makes you whole.’ “I believe American audiences will find Billy’s journey rousing and inspirational. America is a country founded on the principles of equal opportunity for all. It’s a place where anyone can make their dreams come true, provided they have the talent and are ready to work hard.”

A PRELUDE TO VALENTINE’S DAY: Opera Carolina Sets the Mood for Romance with Verdi’s La Traviata

A

Ticket Info

re you in the mood for love? What about a romantically charged evening where passion and heartbreak collide in an opera that has stood the test of time, hailed by critics as the ultimate love story? Opera Carolina sets the stage for the February season of romance – when lovers exchange gifts and promises of passion – with its inspiring production of La Traviata (the fallen woman). Popularized through time, the story of La Traviata has been adapted in the memorable classic 2005 PRODUCTION OF LA TRAVIATA movie Camille starring Greta Garbo, and in Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge. This timeless tale of love, passion and betrayal is the enduring story of 2005 PRODUCTION OF LA TRAVIATA Camille, retold in Giuseppe Verdi’s widely loved classic of a Parisian courtesan who surrenders to love. Based on the true romance of Alexandre Dumas and Marie Duplessis, the story revolves around Paris’ most illustrious femme fatale, Violetta Valéry, a beautiful but frail woman who leaves her destructive life to live with her first real love,

Alfredo Germont. But social bias and Violetta’s failing health intervene, turning love to tragedy and remorse as Alfredo’s father sabotages the relationship. Premiering in Venice in 1853, La Traviata was scandalous for its time because of the cross-class romance and contemporary dress of the performers. But time has judged the opera as one of Verdi’s greatest works, the third of his famous triumvirate of operas (Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La Traviata) from an extraordinarily creative period in his long and productive life. La Traviata remains a touching story that resonates and mesmerizes audiences even today. Infused with abundant melody that underscores the pathos and joy, La Traviata is essentially a singing opera that appeals to opera buffs as well as the uninitiated. You won’t want to miss this beloved opera, one of the top-three most-performed operas after Madama Butterfly and La Bohème – according to Opera America. Get swept up in the grandeur of La Traviata!

La Traviata Thurs., Feb. 3 – 7:30PM; Sat., Feb. 5 – 8PM and Sun., Feb. 6 – 2PM

NUTCRACKER Charlotte’s Favorite Holiday Tradition!

W

ith its dancing dolls, glistening snow and a magical land of delectable sweets, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux’s Nutcracker takes audiences on an enchanted holiday journey. The Nutcracker journey begins at a cheerful holiday party as the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer entertains guests and presents young Clara with an extraordinary Nutcracker doll. With Clara and her Nutcracker Prince as the tour guides, audiences travel to the Land of Snow, where ethereal snowflakes spin and glide in a snowy landscape, and the Land of Sweets, where delightful treats, led by the Sugar Plum Fairy, put on a performance for Clara and her Prince.

Steven Brown from The Charlotte Observer wrote, “If you want to see the fullblown Nutcracker, this is the one.” Two semi-trailer trucks are required to transport Nutcracker’s props and equipment to the Belk Theater. Audiences of all ages enjoy Nutcracker’s magic, including a flying walnut shell, a growing Christmas tree, 165 costumes, 200 pounds of “snow” and Tchaikovsky’s captivating score played live by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Filled with wonder, magic and cheer, Nutcracker draws thousands to the Belk Theater each December. Whether a treasured tradition or a new experience, a trip to the Nutcracker is essential for a splendid holiday season!
