Test Your Knowledge: The David Sedaris Quiz
D
4. Which of these is not a Sedaris book? A. “Naked” B. “Holidays on Ice” C. “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” D. “Running With Scissors”
avid Sedaris, hailed as the humorist of his generation, returns to Belk Theater April 22, a day before his latest book, “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls,” is scheduled to hit the shelves. Sedaris is a regular contributor to NPR and The New Yorker, and his books often live on best-seller lists. He frequently sells out venues, much like a stand-up comedian at the top of his game. While Sedaris slices and dices our culture and everything we hold dear, he accomplishes what few in that satirical sphere do: He still manages to be loveable. As one critic noted: “He’s smart, he’s caustic, he’s mordant, and, somehow, he’s … well, nice." Sedaris, who grew up in Raleigh, delights audiences with stories about his life and his family. Listening to him unravel these tales can captivate you so fully that you want him to come home with you and read to you on a regular basis. Thank goodness for audiobooks and podcasts! “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls” takes readers on a bizarre world tour – from the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra, and from the squat-style toilets of Beijing to the particular wilderness of a North Carolina Costco.
5. Which of these plays did Sedaris cowrite with his sister? A. “Santaland Diaries” B. “Wigfield” C. “Season's Greetings” D. “The Book of Liz” Bonus Question: Who is “The Rooster”? A. Sedaris’ brother, Paul B. A childhood Sedaris family pet C. A current Sedaris pet D. A character in “The Book of Liz” Answers: 1. A. He was born in New York but grew up in Raleigh. 2. B. He was an elf in the Santaland at Macy's Department Store in New York City. 3. C. Sedaris is on all five of his audiobooks. His sister, Amy, has appeared on three of them. Ann Magnuson has appeared on one. 4. D. "Running With Scissors" was written by humorist Augusten Burroughs. 5. D. "Santaland Diaries" and "Season's Greetings" were written by Sedaris alone and "Wigfield" is a book written by Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert. Bonus: A. It’s his brother, Paul, who owns a flooring company in Raleigh. His website is http:// www.YouCantKillTheRooster.com/.
How well do you know the humorist? Take our quiz and see! 1. Where was Sedaris born? A. New York B. France C. North Carolina C. South Africa 2. Where did Sedaris work in "Santaland Diaries"? A. Belk B. Macy's C. Hecht's D. Harrod's 3. Who has not done a reading on one of Sedaris' audiobooks? A. Amy Sedaris B. David Sedaris C. Stephen Colbert D. Ann Magnuson

A Performance Guarantee From A Real Estate Firm? That’s A Sign Of Confidence.

Executive Sellers Realty is a full-service, boutique real estate firm specializing in marketing premiere residential properties and, most important, we offer an innovative sales-performance guarantee. Broadway Revival of Pippin Gets a Lift From Traces
I
n 2008, Charlotteans fell in love with the aweinspiring acrobatics and infectious energy of Traces after it played a six-week run in McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square. Following the tour's launch in the Queen City, Traces went on to be named one of Time Magazine’s Top 10 of 2011, and the group performed two years in a row on NBC’s hit reality series “America’s Got Talent.” In May, Traces returns to Charlotte – this time in the intimate Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts. The admiration and enthusiasm for Traces continues as Gypsy Snider, the show’s codirector and co-choreographer, was enlisted by American Repertory Theater artistic director Diane Paulus to incorporate circus acrobatics into the boldly staged revival of Pippin, the iconic 1970s pop musical. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson, Pippin follows young prince Pippin as he is encouraged by a mysterious group of performers – led by a Leading Player – to embark on a dangerous journey. Bob Fosse directed the original
1972 Broadway production, which featured memorable songs like “Corner of the Sky,” “Magic To Do” and “Glory.” In an interview with Broadway World, Snider says she created high-flying circus feats to emphasize young Pippin’s harrowing journey in search of personal fulfillment. “The acrobatics are not incorporated as skills but as a way to seduce Pippin to a life less ordinary,” Snider explains. It’s essentially “Pippin meets Traces,” since infusing the show with Traces-like elements was a big reason producers chose to do this revival. American Repertory Theater’s Pippin heads to Broadway this spring.

Building Confidence Through Dance N.C. Dance Theatre’s community outreach scholarship dance program is changing lives
“D
ance is a great way to show your feelings,” said 11-year-old Liyah Jones, a participant in North Carolina Dance Theatre’s REACH! dance program for the past four years. Liyah and more than 100 students take classes weekly as part of NCDT REACH!. REACH! began four years ago as a way to engage boys and girls in underserved communities with high-quality instruction. Taught by N.C. Dance Theatre’s community teaching artists, students ages 7 to 10 attend weekly classes in ballet followed by world dance classes such as jazz or AfroModern. NCDT REACH! was founded by April Berry, a former principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and N.C. Dance Theatre’s director of education and outreach. When Berry joined N.C. Dance Theatre, she noted that dance instruction was not available in most Charlotte Mecklenburg elementary schools and N.C. Dance Theatre School of Dance lacked scholarship opportunities for young girls. “REACH! provides a unique opportunity for students to access quality dance classes in their communities,” says Berry. “We also provide dance attire, tickets to Dance Theatre performances and transportation from some schools to REACH! classes.” N.C. Dance Theatre partners with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to offer classes at four recreation centers in different areas of the county. The Women’s Impact Fund was the primary funder for the first three years of the program. Berry says without dance scholarship opportunities, she wouldn’t have made it as a professional

dancer. “Scholarships helped me along the way and provided quality dance training I wouldn’t have received otherwise.” New students are accepted into NCDT REACH! annually. Auditions will be held May 20-23 at each recreation center. Berry is thrilled with the way the NCDT REACH! program is impacting children’s lives. “The program is about more than dance,” says Berry. “The program builds children’s confidence, teaches them to be creative and exposes them to the arts in Charlotte.”

Natalie Merchant to Perform With the Charlotte Symphony
istinguished singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant has flourished from her roots with alternative rock group 10,000 Maniacs to an expanded artistic format that embraces full symphony orchestras. Upon her symphonic debut with the Boston Pops Orchestra, critics from the Boston Globe lauded, “Merchant has found her medium ... (her) woody quaver has never sounded quite so right as it did framed by flutes, a weaving clarinet, and a gentle harp.” As part of her touring project with orchestras the world over, Merchant will perform with the Charlotte Symphony for a special, one-night-only concert March 23 at the Belk Theater, with James Bagwell conducting. Merchant was the Merchant lead vocalist and lyricist for 10,000 Maniacs, pioneering through what became known as the alternative rock genre during the ’80s and ’90s. With socially conscious lyrics written to musically powerful, yet very danceable original compositions, the band released two platinum and four gold records. During her performance with the Charlotte Symphony, Merchant will include classic songs from her days with 10,000 Maniacs. One such song will be “Verdi Cries” from their 1993 record “In My Tribe,” which Rolling Stone Magazine attributed as one of the 100
most important releases of the decade. Merchant also will sing to the sounds of the symphony nostalgic numbers from her early solo career, such as “Life is Sweet” from 1995’s “Ophelia.” In addition to her own music, Merchant currently tends toward reaching back to classic poems and literary works for inspiration. This new literary-inspired material will be the focus of her performance with the Charlotte Symphony. She will draw primarily from her latest and highly acclaimed recording, “Leave Your Sleep,” which made the top 20 of the Billboard Top 200 list in 2010. Selections from “Leave Your Sleep” showcase the prolific vocalist's acuity for storytelling as she weaves through Photo by Mark Seliger interpretations of 19th and 20th century works about the experiences and mindsets of childhood. Songs include the dreamy “Land of Nod,” contrasted with the more fiery “maggie and milly and molly and may,” adapted from poets Robert Louis Stevenson and E.E. Cummings, respectively. Upholding her reputation as an artistic visionary, Natalie Merchant diversifies her repertoire by singing her stories to songs composed for orchestras; her concert with the Charlotte Symphony is sure to be a distinctive musical experience.
