Celebrate National Dance Day This Summer
W
Come give it a ‘Whirl’
hen Blumenthal Performing Arts started a participatory arts program called Whirl last year, the reception from the community exceeded all expectations. Blumenthal works hard to offer fun and exciting events, but thanks to Charlotte-area residents, the participatory arts initiative has grown into something much bigger. “Although I’m always optimistic about new programs, I confess that the wonderful participation and attendance level for our first National Dance Day event was beyond my expectations,” said Blumenthal Director of Education Ralph Beck. “Many more people than I anticipated have been willing to give participatory arts a whirl – especially within the first year of these programs!” This year, Carolinas Healthcare System presents 2014 National Dance Day, hosted by Blumenthal Performing Arts, and it’s just around the corner. Last summer was Charlotte’s first National Dance Day celebration, which took
place in Founders Hall. Blumenthal invited anyone and everyone to come out and move! Hundreds of people showed up to this free community event to dance the day away or to hang out with those who did. It proved that the community is looking for ways to get involved in the performing arts, even when it’s just for fun! National Dance Day was created by Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of “So You Think You Can Dance,” to promote health and self-esteem through the art form of dance. Blumenthal Performing Arts will join hundreds of other organizations across the country in hosting an array of participatory dance activities on Saturday, July 26. If you attended last year, be sure to come out again this year, and if you didn’t, you’re encouraged to give it a whirl! For details, visit the website BlumenthalArts.org/WHIRL. Also, check out Blumenthal’s YouTube channel at www. youtube.com/NCBPAC to watch a video from last year’s event!

Opera Carolina

Opera Carolina Takes the Show on the Road Performances in 58 schools seek to inspire future fans
“I
ntroducing young people to opera is one of our most important responsibilities and one of our greatest joys,” says Maestro James Meena, of the importance the company places on educational programs. “Opera is storytelling on a grand scale, and everyone loves a good story.” While Opera Carolina is packing the house at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the company is also packing school auditoriums – and discovering enthusiastic audiences. Opera Xpress, the educational touring company of Opera Carolina, has engaged nearly 1.5 million students in kindergarten through fifth-grade since 1971. The group’s 45-minute productions help students see opera as an accessible art form that mixes singing, acting, symphony, costumes and stage and set design. During the 2013/14 school year, the company visited elementary schools in North and South Carolina. Some 30,000 students and teachers in more than 11 counties got a taste of The Three Little Pigs. The 2014/15 school year features a lively retelling of Hansel & Gretel. Opera Xpress isn’t the only way Opera Carolina reaches young audiences. Minds on Music helps inspire students to appreciate classical music, including opera. The program is being piloted in six area schools and features a monthlong discovery of a featured composer – Mozart and Beethoven, for example – that takes place outside the traditional classroom. For instance, music is played in school corridors as students arrive each morning. (Imagine easing into your day with “Moonlight Sonata” or getting fired up with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony!) Fun facts about the composer of the month are shared each morning during announcements, and and musicians perform a few selections from the featured composers live each month. Opera Carolina will expand Minds on Music
Opera Xpress presents Hansel & Gretel
in 2014/15 to add 20 schools, including 14 in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. In addition, every CMS fifth-grader will attend a 45-minute concert at the Belk Theater. For many, it’s their first exposure to theater. The program, which reached 12,374 students and teachers this school year, is a new annual collaborative effort including the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina Dance Theatre, the Arts and Science Council and CMS. Other education programs include Opera Carolina Academy and Student Night at the Opera, which provides affordable tickets to students and school groups. Parents: If your children beg you to take them to the opera, you’ll know where the inspiration came from. We hope you’ll indulge them. Learn more at operacarolina.org.

Pop Out to Symphony Park for Summer Concert Series
P
ack your blanket, picnic basket and beverage of choice before you head out to Symphony Park for an evening of music as the sun sets. There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in June. A Charlotte summer tradition since 1983, Summer Pops brings families and friends from across our community together for the shared enjoyment of live, outdoor symphonic concerts. The atmosphere is casual and the crowd is diverse. Symphony Park Seasoned symphony lovers sip champagne from their lawn chairs just feet way from a group of young professionals playing a round of cards on their picnic blanket while a dad dances with his 4-year-old daughter right behind them. This year’s Summer Pops season kicks off Sunday, June 8, and as always, culminates with the July 3 Independence Day concert complete with fireworks for the spirited patriotic celebration! Each of the Sundays are programmed around a different theme, Symphony Park
with Albert-George Schram conducting each performance. Summer Pops is popular, and the best spots in the park fill up fast, so plan to arrive early to stake your claim. Gates open at 5 p.m., the prelude performance is at 7 p.m. and the Charlotte Symphony takes the stage at 8 p.m. Many patrons mark their spots and return later, but there are also a number of concertgoers who stay and enjoy an early picnic while they wait. Summer Pops is affordable for the whole family: Single adult tickets are $10, and youths 18 and under are admitted free. A summer pass covering adult admission to all five Summer Pops concerts is only $35. Tickets and passes can be purchased over the phone at 704-972-2000 and online at charlottesymphony.org. Tickets are also available the evening of a concert at the gate at Symphony Park, located at 4400 Sharon Road, Charlotte, behind the SouthPark mall.

Who’s Who in the Cast top 20 hit singles including “We Will Rock You”, now a feature of almost every sporting event worldwide, and recently a star live feature of the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. We Will Rock You also gave its name to the worldwide hit Queen musical now celebrating its 11th anniversary in London, and about to embark on its first US Tour; Brian and band-mate Roger Taylor are comusical supervisors for the production. Following four decades of worldwide success with Queen and as a solo artist, most recently Brian has been writing and performing with Kerry Ellis, originator of the role of Meat in the London WWRY production. Brian’s interest in 3-D Photography sees the October publication of “Diableries - Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell”, Brian’s fourth book. As an advocate for animal welfare, Brian is a leading inspiration in the ongoing fight against the proposed UK badger cull, and the return of blood sports. Brian can be contacted via his website www.brianmay.com. ROGER TAYLOR. Although best known for his powerhouse role in Queen, Roger Taylor is anything but a drummer confined to his kit. With rock ‘n’ roll in his veins all through his schooldays, he has always been a highly active, vocal member of Queen. Each of the band’s 15 studio albums included compositions by him including such eternal classics as I’m In Love With My Car and Sheer Heart Attack. He was also the first to make a solo album, 1981’s Fun in Space. To date he has released four solo albums, which, aside from his work with Queen, further highlighted Taylor as an musician and writer with a strong sense of identity, a wide musical perspective, and a defined political awareness, more often than not conveyed in characteristic irony. He is kept busy these days overseeing Queen’s worldwide hit musical We Will Rock You and as the creator and driving force behind the Queen Extravaganza, the hugely successful official Queen tribute band. The Extravaganza is undertaking its second tour of North America and then takes its unique show to the UK. For the immediate future Roger is

North Carolina Dance Theatre is Now Charlotte Ballet
I
n April, North Carolina Dance Theatre, one of Blumenthal Performing Arts’ resident companies, announced it was changing its name to Charlotte Ballet. The name change is part of a branding initiative to define and clearly communicate the organization and its mission. “The transformational shift enables us to redefine the perceptions of ballet; celebrate our dancers; and better connect the company to the community we serve,” said Executive Director Douglas Singleton. Founded in 1970 by Robert Lindgren, former dean of dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, the company toured both internationally and nationally and received the National Endowment for the Arts distinction as the nation’s highest rated touring company in 1982. Salvatore Aiello became artistic director in 1985, and under his leadership the organization moved to Charlotte in 1990. Former New York City Ballet star Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux took over artistic leadership in 1996. Building on the foundation of excellence established by his predecessors, Bonnefoux developed a versatile and diverse repertoire ranging from full-length classical ballets to contemporary world premieres by choreographers such as Dwight Rhoden, resident choreographer since 2006. Bonnefoux’s wife, fellow former New York City Ballet star, Patricia McBride, serves as associate artistic director, as does former dancer Sasha Janes. In 2010, the organization
moved to its home at the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance in uptown Charlotte. Dancer Pete Leo Walker said, “Our new name reflects our commitment to being a part of the thriving and vibrant arts community of Charlotte. We are proud to be a part of this region’s development and to celebrate the city that has been celebrating us for years.” Charlotte Ballet continues to offer a variety of exciting performances and programs to engage and educate our community. Charlotte Ballet Academy, previously named the North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance, enrolls over 700 students annually, providing exceptional training for aspiring dancers, as well as a prestigious pre-professional program and Summer Intensive. Through the Reach program, Charlotte Ballet offers free dance classes to children throughout the community. “This transformation is not about changing what we do – it’s about defining it,” said President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “Our dancers are known for their ability to perform classical ballets as well as innovative, contemporary works. No matter how far we push the perceptions of ballet and infuse other dance styles, our performances have always been and will continue to be, rooted in the tradition of ballet. We are proud to finally take our rightful place as Charlotte Ballet.”
