BLUE MAN GROUP CREATES VAUDEVILLE FOR 21ST CENTURY intrigue him. And he does so without ever speaking. “Talking is so limiting,” says Goldman. “We talked once, and it was horrible. But we don’t think of the Blue Man as a mute. We think of him as someone who has chosen not to say anything.” The show is not without words. LED screens display a series of messages designed to make the audience laugh and/or think. An authoritative voice explains the intricacies of modern plumbing and choreography and technology. People in the front rows immediately feel a part of the proceedings since they get slickers to protect their clothes from paint splatterings and such. The Blue Men are also know for the enormous amount of eye contact they make with the audience, both from the stage and by interacting with them. For Goldman, Stanton and Wink, the finale unites the audience in a magical way. “It’s all about the connection,” says Stanton. “Even though technology has made it so that we don’t have to have that live experience, there’s something about our humanity that will always need it.”

o one knows how to make a more inspired mess than BLUE MAN GROUP. Whether they’re beating on drums and generating a kaleidoscopic spray of airborne paint or chomping out a Cap’n Crunch symphony, the bald-and-blue characters approach each messy, noisy enterprise with the expertise and determination of children. And the audience responds with grininducing joy and howls of laughter. You might say that BLUE MAN GROUP is child’s play for adults. At first glance, a mess – but looking closer, it’s far from one. Don’t confuse child’s play with childishness. “We have things that we think about, and they express themselves in these weird ways,” says Phil Stanton, co-founder of BLUE MAN GROUP with Matt Goldman and Chris Wink. “We’re usually looking at things from the point of community or relationships. We’re trying to say something about the power of a group.” Goldman adds, “Preserving a childlike wonder is definitely one of the things behind what we do. We believe that we’re all creative beings, and creativity can look a lot of different ways. We’re trying to get to an ecstatic, euphoric, emotional place.” Think of the show as vaudeville for the 21st century. The Blue Men – and a few musicians – offer an array of flights of fancy, ranging from primitive to sophisticated, in a variety show quite unlike any other. Many think that being bald and blue is putting on a mask of sorts, says Goldman, but it’s the opposite: “Once you strip away the hair, the skin tone, the gender, the ears, and have no particular style of clothing, what’s left? It’s really the rawest, purest form of what’s essentially human.” The Blue Man uses every facet of his being to engage the audience in situations and ideas and behavior and sights and sounds that

TRY GREEN EGGS AND HAM AT THE SYMPHONY
W
Ticket Info
ould you eat them at the Symphony? Would you eat them with a…hmmm… What rhymes with Symphony? The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra brings the deliciously delightful rhymes of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham to audiences of all ages at its upcoming Lollipops concert on March 26. The Symphony is teaming up with the artists of “Really Inventive Stuff” for the concert. Inspired by the legends of vaudeville and silent film, “Really Inventive Stuff” combines music, miming, and puppetry to open the imaginations of its audiences as it creatively shares some of literature’s best tales. Green Eggs and SAM - I - AM Ham features Kimberly Schroeder as the Soprano, and Michael Boudewyns as the persistent Sam-I-Am. “We’ve designed this so that the soprano, or the person who does not like green eggs and ham, is living in kind of a black and white world,” says Boudewyns. “And in contrast, Sam-I-Am is very colorful. I just love Dr. Seuss. I think that what Dr. Seuss has given the world is a giant gift, and all of this is in celebration of Dr. Seuss.” Boudewyns is the co-founder of “Really Inventive Stuff.” He has performed with theater companies around the nation and has
been creating literature-based performances since 1997. Kimberly Schroeder is currently the co-director of the Delaware Dance Company’s Youth Dance Ensemble. She has been in many productions, including Fiddler on the Roof, La Boheme and Cinderella. This orchestral adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss tale features music by Robert Kapilow. “Kapilow’s score for Green Eggs and Ham is a lot like ‘Looney Tunes’ music, where the scores are like patchwork – constantly changing melodies and illustrating a cartoon,” says Boudewyns. “The music catches you by surprise and really forces you to pay attention.” The concert is sure to be fun for all, Boudewyns says: “We want to make sure that a sense of playfulness exists. People forget that when you see a performance, you are there to play. Actors perform in a play; musicians play instruments –audiences need that same experience. They need the opportunity to play.” Find out how much you like green eggs and ham on Saturday, March 26 in the Belk Theater. A pre-concert festival begins at 10 a.m. and puts the musical experience into kids’ hands, with crafts, activities, and instrument exploration in The Symphony Guild of Charlotte’s “Musical Petting Zoo.”

SPOTLIGHT wasn’t sheer dancing “disappeared into a harmonious wash of light, costumes, music and movement.” Legendary choreographer Martha Graham’s influence can be seen in Requiem, a piece by former Graham Company principal dancer Jacqulyn Buglisi. Set to Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem,” Buglisi uses five female dancers, costumed in long layered silk skirts by costumer A. Christina Giannini. According to Buglisi, who choreographed the ballet in 2001, the main themes of Requiem are man’s vulnerabilities and peace. North Carolina native and former NC Dance Theatre 2 dancer Emery LeCrone is creating a new work for Spotlight. LeCrone was born in Greensboro, N.C., and studied dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts before joining Dance Theatre. It was The during her time at Dance Theatre when she Golden Section began choreographing. potlight, a series focusing on women choreographers, takes to the Knight Theater stage April 28-30. For the first time in its history, Dance Theatre is devoting a series to women choreographers, including a Company premiere of The Golden Section by dance icon Twyla Tharp. Choreographers Jacqulyn Buglisi and Emery LeCrone are also featured. The New York Times called Twyla Tharp “an American artist of the first order” and wrote that she has “famously broken down the barriers between ballet and modern dance, fusing them into a genre specifically her own.”

YANNI CELEBRATES A NEW DIRECTION
Y
anni has played the Taj Mahal, the Royal Albert Hall in England, the Acropolis in Greece, the Forbidden City in China… and on April 11, for the first time ever, Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Born in Kalamata, Greece, Yanni began to play the piano at age six. He refused formal lessons because he felt that a certain freedom with the keys might be crushed under the weight of structured learning. His childhood in Greece and his love for his native country gave Yanni his inspiration to compose such songs as “Santorini,” “Nostalgia” and “Acroyali.” Fourteen albums later, Yanni continues to amaze audiences across the globe.
The multi-Grammy®-nominated composer will play songs from Truth Of Touch, his latest album, and selections from his decades-long career. “Truth Of Touch is more electronic than acoustic,” says Yanni. “There are a lot of fresh sounds and rhythms on this album. You will feel a lot of Yanni on this, but there is a departure from what you might expect.” Yanni says he is looking forward to the next stage of his evolution. “To make things happen in life, you have to have faith and passion,” he says. “Right now is the best time of my life.”
