Shelly Carlin receives honor from National Diversity Council Recognition places her among 2010’s ‘Most Powerful & Influential Women in Illinois’ The National Diversity Council honored Shelly Carlin, senior vice president of Human Resources, as one of the Most Powerful & Influential Women in Illinois for 2010. Shelly was one of 18 women leaders recognized on 25 March.

“As a global company, we not only embrace and value diverse individuals, opinions, cultures and abilities, but also actively seek them. It is the unique perspectives and experiences of our employees that enable Motorola to pioneer so many innovative products and technologies.”

During the awards ceremony, Shelly spoke to attendees about the importance of inclusion and diversity at Motorola and in the business world. “In the business world, our fundamental challenge is to create an environment where all employees can freely contribute their skills and talent toward driving business results, without the distraction of wondering if they are respected or if their contributions are valued,” Shelly said in her acceptance remarks. “At Motorola, we are actively examining these ideas and are embarking upon a re-evaluation of what inclusion and diversity really mean for us in the coming decades, especially as we prepare to separate into two independent, publicly traded companies in the first quarter of 2011. As we step back and chart our course for the coming years, one thing is clear. Our emphasis in the future will be less on the diversity of our workforce and more on the diversity of thoughts, ideas and

“When I think about diversity, I think of a stimulating and impassioned dialogue among people with varying backgrounds, distinct opinions and strong belief systems where viewpoints are openly challenged in what I would depict as a battle of ideas. Ultimately, this exercise culminates in the development of innovative products and experiences for our diverse customers.” Sanjay Jha

Creating business value through external connections The ABC Professional Networks & Affinity Groups team has established connections with various government groups and business executives from China. In Q1, on behalf of the Enterprise Mobility Solutions China sales team, ABC hosted three groups of Chinese officials (75 people total) at the Motorola Innovation Center. Among the visitors were influential people in the mining, healthcare and public safety sectors. These visitors were identified by our sales teams as potential or existing customers. Presentations and demos included sharing the benefits of two-way radio systems and Symbol technologies to help the visitors better understand

our industry solutions. Connections generated from these visits were forwarded to our China sales team for further follow up. Future visits are planned and will include officials and corporate executives from various industries in China. Global Engineering Marathon held at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago On 25 February, the Motorola WBC and the Motorola Foundation held the kickoff for the Global Engineering Marathon (GEM) at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. The all-day event encouraged women in science, technology, engineering and math to use their influence to help pave the way for the next generation of young women. This will help to unlock fresh discoveries and release the minds of young women to

explore new possibilities. When that happens, magical things happen. Girls look at the world around them with inquisitive eyes. They recognize what opportunities and promise await them as they move forward into the future. All it takes is one woman and one idea to innovate — but it takes her network to make the innovation come to life.
