The first time I ever came to Athens was for a party. In fact, it was supposed to be a surprise birthday party for me. It was my 17th birthday and due to a family emergency my parents couldn’t really celebrate my birthday on the actual day that year. My friend decided that she would take things into her own hands. (For her own sake, I’m not going to give her real name, but we will call her Nicole.) Nicole picked me up on the Friday afternoon and told me that she had a surprised planned. I remember not knowing where we were until we got onto 316. Oh, 316. Once we were on 316, I knew we were headed toward Athens, so I asked her what was really going on. She told me that her sister Rachel lived in Athens and we were going up there for the night for a surprise party for me. She reassured me that I would know a lot of people and that it was going to be fun. I figured it wouldn’t be too bad—boy, was I wrong! We arrived in time for a funneling contest. I walked into to her sisters crowded apartment to find that I, in fact, knew no one. As soon as my friend Nicole got settled, she flocked to the drinks and guys. Don’t get me wrong—to each their own, but at the time it was extremely over-whelming for a newly turned 17 year old. I had my fun in high school, but this situation strange. As the night progressed, it continued to get worse. We all crammed into a taxi van, and drove to downtown. Nicole and her sister Rachel coincidentally left their cash at home, so I got stuck paying for the taxi. Once downtown, Nicole, Rachel and all of their friends rushed into a bar, leaving me outside. I clearly wasn’t 18 and didn’t have an ID to get in. I remember looking down Clayton st. thinking to myself that I never wanted to be a part of this ever again. To sum up this story, I ended up getting into a place, and my friend ignored me for a newly-found fraternity guy. Thank heavens I ran into some people I knew, and ended up leaving with them. I swore after that night I would never come to Athens again, but that I refused to even apply to UGA. Obviously, neither ended up being the case. Looking back on it, an outrageous night and ridiculous party almost determined my life and career. I love Athens, UGA and could not imagine a better place to attend college or start my career. Party on and party safe.

A Red & Black Affair: UGA VS. BOISE STATE PRE-GAME KICKOFF PARTY AT THE IVY BUCKHEAD BY DANA J. HORTMAN
A
s the famous sports broadcaster and “Voice of the Dawgs” announcer Larry Munson once said, “There is no tradition more worthy of envy, no institution worthy of such loyalty, as the University of Georgia.” Gamedays in Athens are not only memorable, but full of excitement and energy as 95,000+ fans dressed head to toe in red and black come together for one sole purpose, to cheer on their beloved Bulldogs. As August quickly fades into September, the time has come for all to gather once again for the much anticipated 2011 football season. But, this year is special. With a new breed of young pups and their projected talent on the gridiron, the Bulldogs are set to face the Boise State University Broncos in the annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta on September 3, 2011 at 8 p.m.
Not going to the game? No problem! Order a Bud Light, calamari and cheer on the Dawgs from the comfort of The Ivy. For those fans who do plan to attend the Chickfil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome, look no further than The Ivy for all your transportation needs. Avoid outrageous parking prices, traffic and the possibility of a DUI. The Ivy has chartered two full-sized coach buses, which will allow guests to travel to and from the game in style without the stress of parking. Guests can pay $55, including a ride back and forth from the Dome, free drinks and a complimentary collectible IVY koozie. The buses will begin leaving The Ivy at 6:30 p.m. for the game and will return at 11 p.m. Win or lose, bring the party back to The Ivy for post-game enjoyment until 3 a.m.
The attire for this event is gameday appropriate. Guys, be sure to sport those white-collared shirts paired with the famous red and black slacks with tiny Bulldogs printed on them. Ladies, match that little black dress with stylish red jewelry, high heels and a clutch.
And where will you be?
For the ultimate Chick-Fil-A Kickoff pre-game party, join all of your fellow Bulldog fans at the University of Georgia’s premier tailgating spot, The Ivy Buckhead. Opening at noon, attendees can enjoy watching other opening day football games on a variety of huge flat screen TVs located throughout the restaurant and bar. The Ivy features the largest courtyard in the Buckhead area, equipped with a comfortable cooling system, which allows individuals to gather and socialize. Event goers may also enjoy any drink of their choice from the fully-stocked bar. From the delicious IVY wings and Unadilla Quesadillas, to the legendary Athens pizza and Beauregard burger, be sure to fill up on the wide selection of menu items that The Ivy Buckhead has to offer. a u g u s t 2011

A Woman’s Right to
PARTY Let’s be honest. Women have a tough job at any age, especially in their twenties. Between a full-time school schedule, a part-time job, friends, internships, guys and the whole idea of the quarter-life crisis, life can be sort of hectic on a regular basis. Sometimes, when we get so occupied and overwhelmed with everyday stresses, we often neglect ourselves. And, not to mention, our ability to have fun and enjoy life’s little pleasures. But that can all change with a group of girlfriends, hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a scheduled appointment with a consultant included. Take a Saturday off and plan a day in with the girls. Here are three different alternative parties that will be worth hosting. By: Dana J. Hortman

This so-called “healthy alternative” has its risks Experts have recently begun scrutinizing the recent social addiction to hookah. Hookah smoking involves three main ingredients: charcoal, tobacco, and water. Ancient folklore raves that hookah smoking is a cleaner alternative to traditional smoking tobacco, but new studies reveal that this “clean” alternative has some dirty secrets. By: Jessica Sooknanan Photo by: Allison Love
I
Seen by many as a modern alternative to cigarette smoking, veterans to hookah convincingly argue that that its smoke is much safer than the alternative since it is “filtered” through the water. Those who have taken a puff or two know that the smoke does not irritate, and exotic flavors like rose and mango can be quite palatable. Here is a fun fact to share at your next hookah gathering: The contraption dates back to the later 1500s during Emperor Akbar’s reign of India. A physician invented it and presented it to the emperor as a healthier alternative to traditional tobacco since the smoke passes through a small chamber of water before entering the lungs. Today, that same marketing ropes in young adults looking for a good, healthy time. Contrary to this almost 12
a u g u s t 2011
600-year-old testimony still trusted by many, recent research reveals that hookah tobacco does in fact cause health problems. Although the water filters some of the nicotine, smoke from a waterpipe still contains numerous toxicants known to cause lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases according to a 2005 World Health Organization (WHO) study. The WHO study also found that more frequent users reported an addiction to hookah smoking. You may think you are in the clear if smoking hookah is a rare event in your social arena. However, if you truly have experienced hookah, you know that it is not a brief affair. Smoking sessions lasting for hours are not uncommon as friends gather and deep conversations unfold. The WHO reported that these infrequent but lengthy smoking huddles could lead to health problems as well.
Data shows that cigarette smokers typically take eight to 12 puffs over a period of about five to seven minutes, which results in an average consumption of about .5 to .6 liters of smoke. Waterpipe smoking sessions typically last 20 to 80 minutes, during which the smoker my take between 50 and 200 puffs resulting in the consumption of about .15 to 1 liter of smoke. This means that in a single session of smoking, the waterpipe smoker would inhale enough smoke to account for 100 cigarettes or more. A University of Florida study uncovered yet another hazard that arises from smoking hookah. The coal used to light the tobacco produces up to 11 times more carbon monoxide than a cigarette. If you think you can still reap the social benefits of smoking hookah by refraining from taking drags while still hanging out, you may want to
reassess your plan of action. High levels of carbon monoxide affect not only the smoker, but the non-participating bystanders as well. A high level of exposure to carbon monoxide displaces a potentially dangerous amount of oxygen in the blood. Call this a germaphobic tidbit, but the communal style of smoking hookah – sharing a hose – spreads infections like tuberculosis. Despite the millions of hookah users worldwide, a surprisingly brief amount of research has explored its risks. The WHO ends its report with a list of proposed initiatives to dispel false rumors associated with hookah smoking. Among the list are a ban on misleading labels advertising “contains 0 mg tar” and the education of health professionals, regulators and the public at large about hookah’s potential dangers. Sorry to put such a damper on
the good times, but we all know that any good thing in life comes with baggage. Packing up your hookah for good is not the only way to avoid health risks. After all, you probably already had a feeling that inhaling tobacco of any kind for hours on end had a downside. Be sure to limit your consumption and be outdoors when smoking to reduce harm to yourself and your peers. Just like anything else in life, practice in moderation and, most importantly, be aware of the risks.

DO-ITYOURSELF PARTY DÉCOR CHALKBOARD TABLE CLOTH
GREAT PARTY DÉCOR doesn’t have to be bought, it can be made! Putting together your own party décor is an enjoyable way to make your event both stylish and unique. Below are some simple guides to crafting your way to a perfect party!
BY STACI LAWANDALES 14
a u g u s t 2011
This is a really simple way to give your guests something fun and creative to engage in while enjoying a meal. It also doubles as a sort of archiving tool for the night, as many guests can write messages or draw funny pictures on it. This craft is great for a birthday, going away party, or engagement party as it provides an easy way for your party guests to leave messages to the host(s). WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1 small can of chalkboard paint Canvas – cut and primed to fit your table Chalk Light grade sandpaper Damp sponge
Instructions: First, stretch out your canvas on a flat surface. Using a roller or roller brush, cover the canvas with two coats of chalkboard paint, allowing the coats to dry between applications. Once the canvas is dry, carefully rub the surface with light grade sandpaper. This will make the cloth easier to draw on. Next, cover the canvas with chalk and then wipe it clean with a damp sponge. Once the canvas is dry, lay it over your table! If you want to preserve the chalk masterpiece your party guests created, invest in a spray fixative. Be sure to spray it outside though, because fixative is flammable and smelly!
DOILY LANTERNS
PAPER FLOWERS
There are a variety of ways to make lanterns, from brown paper bags to toilet paper rolls. They are a perfect way to create a soft, romantic look at your party. My personal favorite lanterns are made from lace doilies!
Paper Flowers are a great way to create a cheerful, colorful aesthetic at your next gathering. You can put them in mason jars or hang them from the ceiling for a really dreamy feel.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Balloons Round lace doilies (an easy flea market or antique store find) Wallpaper glue Ribbon or string White string lights
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 20x30 inch tissue paper in colors of choice (about 8 pieces recommended per flower) Floral wire Scissors Monofilament – clear fishing line (if you plan to hang them from the ceiling)
Instructions: Blow up your balloon and hang it from a string. Next, soak the lace doilies in wallpaper glue and wrap and overlap them around your balloon until it is completely covered. Cover the whole thing in an extra layer of wallpaper glue. Let the glue dry completely, usually overnight. Once fully dry, pop the balloon and remove the remnants. Voila! You have a doily lantern! Use your string to hang the lantern from your white string lights for a gorgeous party glow.
Instructions: First, stack 8 pieces of tissue paper and begin folding paper accordion style in about 1 ½ inch increments. Crease after each fold. By the end, you should have a narrow strip of folded paper. Next, take the floral wire and fold it in half over the center of the strip. Twist the wire to tighten it. Following that, take your scissors and trim the edges of the strip into round or pointed shapes. Next, begin separating the layers, pulling each away from the center one at a time. The final flower should look like a paper pom-pom. Once you have your flower, shape the floral wire to sit in a vase or be hung from the ceiling from monofilament.
PHOTO BOOTH This craft is becoming a huge favorite in the college party scene. It is a delightful way to engage your party guests and also create memorable photos from the evening that everyone will enjoy experiencing afterwards. It is so easy to do and your guests will love it! WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Camera Tripod Various large picture frames (easy to find at any thrift store) A basket full of costume wear, hats, paper mustaches, etc. A large flat bed sheet in a neutral color or print Small nails Instructions: Find a spot in your house with good lighting and hang the sheet from the ceiling. Set up your camera on a tripod in a place where rowdy party guests won’t bother it. Nearby, place a basket full of frames, fun costumes, glasses, etc. for guests to get silly with when taking their pictures.

a u g u s t 2011
Universities are huge “small towns” and it is not uncommon t a good idea no matter what state of mind you are in. This ma good idea, even if you did get the Facebook invite. Unless, of not mind seeing another person dancing or canoodling with y “relationshipping,” parties can be a way to reconnect with frie By: Morgan Rushing
“There is nothing I do better than revenge” – You both are invited to the same party. No matter how the relationship ended or who did the breaking up, it is still awkward to see your ex out afterwards. There is always pressure when you know you both are invited to the same party. You have to deal with the anxiety of whether or not to go, and then you envision how the night is going to play out before you even attend. If you happen to see your ex at a mutual friend’s party, then the rules of the game change. All bets are off. Even though Miranda Lambert has made the “crazy exgirlfriend” infamous, we suggest that you do not be “that girl.” You know the one I am talking about. We have all been there before. Instead, if you know that the once love-of-your-life-turned-mortalenemy is going to be there, make sure you look amazing and enjoy yourself. DO: Go out and get a new hairstyle. Changing one thing about yourself will give you a fresh perspective on life and it gets you out of your daily routine. DO: Make yourself feel sexy. This could be buying a new pair of sexy underwear or taking a bubble bath with a glass of wine before the party. DO: Wear that dress that you know you look too good in to turn down and put on those high heels you have been dying to show off. DO: Show up with friends you can always trust to have a good time with. DO: Know your drink limit. No one wants to babysit you all night. You want to make sure that
to run into your ex out at a bar, on campus or even at a party. Breaking up and inviting your ex to a party is not ay seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised. And just so you know, going to your ex’s party is also not a course, this was a completely mutual breakup where you both have absolutely no feelings for each other and would your once significant other. Let’s be honest, how often does that really happen? For those of you who are happily ends, let out some stress, and enjoy yourselves.
not only you, but also your amazing friends, are having a great night. DON’T: Be the first one at the party and start downing shots. You do not want to be the sloppy drunk. It is not uncommon to have one mindset going into the party, and then a couple of drinks in, lose your wallet, camera and everything you once told yourself along with your dignity. DON’T: Attend the party by yourself; this just puts you in an uncomfortable situation. DON’T: Text your ex. Just because your ex is there does not mean it is suddenly okay to text him. You are broken up for a reason. Give your friend your phone for the night if you know that you are a drunken texter or have the tendency to drunk dial. DON’T:Stalk him. Under no circumstance is this okay. If he disappears for a little while during the night, do not make it your mission to find him. That is what his friends are for. You are not in a relationship anymore so he is not your priority. DON’T:Try to have a heart-to-heart at the party. He is there for the same reasons you are…to have a good time. This will probably end badly anyway. DON’T: Get belligerently drunk and start crying or wanting to start a fight. Keep your composure and class. DON’T:Go to the party with the intention of trying to get back together. Greg Behrendt said it best in his book, It’s Called a Breakup Because It’s Broken, “There’s no doubt about it – breakups suck. But in the first few hours or days or weeks that follow, there’s one important truth you need to recognize:
Some things can’t and shouldn’t be fixed, especially that loser who dumped you or forced you to dump him. It’s over for a reason, and deep down inside you probably know what that reason is.” If you are not at the point in your life when you can see your ex out, then just do not put yourself in that situation. No one can fault you for that. Give yourself enough time and then go out and have fun!
Flying Solo
Once you leave the college scene, it is much easier to avoid those unwanted run-ins with your ex at parties. Now parties become a great place to meet new people and begin a potential new relationship. We all know that our mothers have told us countless times, “You are not going to meet the person you are supposed to marry in a bar.” I hate to say it, but she is probably right. If you are someone who likes to go out on the town on the weekends, that leaves a very slim opportunity of places to meet your new mate. Whether it is a wedding reception, a cookout or a tailgate, parties open the door. DO: Be open and approachable. You look the most attractive when you are smiling and having a good time. The University of British Columbia stated in the National Post, “Men were most sexually attracted to women who looked happy, and least attracted to women who appeared proud and confident.” DO: Have fun and do not expect to go out and find your soul mate. Sometimes we get so caught up in a u g u s t 2011
17
the idea of marriage and trying to find that special someone that we forget to just let loose. It will happen when you least expect it. DO: Mingle with a lot of people that you would not normally talk to. Just because you talk to someone does not make you committed to them for the rest of your life. DO: Be aware of your first impressions. Even if the person is not your type, you might end up making a new friend. DO: Ask questions about the other person and be genuinely interested in what he has to say. DON’T: Be desperate. It can be very obvious when you are trying too hard. DON’T: Talk about your ex non-stop. I am sure at one time he was great, but that is over now. He is your ex for a reason. DON’T: Hook up with a guy and then expect him to call you the next morning (typically, he will not call if you give it up easily). Guys, do not expect a girl to hook up with you either and then think she is the type to bring home to Mom. To each his own, but just know what to expect. DON’T: Seek revenge by hooking up with your once significant other’s best friends. This just causes all sorts of trouble for both parties.
DO: Participate in group activities such as beer pong, cornhole, flip cup or up the river/down the river card games. If you are attending as a couple, get on separate teams to create a little friendly competition (and maybe even bet a friendly wager). Or, being on the same team could create a bonding opportunity. Impress him with your amazing beer pong skills. DON’T: Ignore your significant other’s phone calls. If you are one who is doing the calling, give your significant other some space and try not to call every five minutes. DON’T: Cheat. This is NEVER a good idea. DON’T: Get so wasted that you don’t remember if you cheated until you see yourself in a YouTube video. DON’T: Give your phone number out to every guy/ girl there. Unless you actually plan on hanging out with him or her or going on a group date, but what are the chances of that? DON’T: Be “that couple” that ignores everyone else around you or that is so mushy that everyone’s vomit reflex is triggered. DON’T: Break up and/or fight at a party. Just wait until you get home and are sober. No one wants to deal with that, party-goers included.
“Two’s a Company, Three’s a Crowd”
If you are in a relationship and you plan on attending a party solo, the most important piece of advice to remember is that you are in a relationship. If you get to a point in the night where you feel like you are doing something wrong, then you probably are. Ask yourself: Would I be OK if the roles were reversed? But also remember, it is more than OK to go out and enjoy yourself. If you are in a relationship and you plan on attending the party together, remember to have fun and make it as drama-free as possible. No one likes to see the overthe-top affectionate couple nor do they want to be around the couple that is constantly fighting. DO: Hang out with your friends. Reconnect with people you haven’t spent much time with since you and your significant other started dating. DO: Dance together. Dance crazily, dance cute, dance and enjoy yourselves. If you are solo for the night, it would probably be safer to dance alone or with your friends. 18
a u g u s t 2011
Whether you are recently single, single and looking, or happily in a relationship, remember to be mindful of everyone around you. Parties are supposed to be fun and enjoyable, so make it just that! As the proverb says, “Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we’re here we should dance.”

Those Summer Nights
Sometimes it seems that August seeks revenge knowing that fall is just around the corner, so it makes sure that it is one of the hottest months of the year. Just because it feels like hell outside does not mean you have to look like it. To help keep you looking sizzling, BLVD has created a plan to go from a day at a pool party to an evening at a sophisticated affair. By: Morgan Rushing
Pool Party Must Haves for the LADIES No matter how old you get, you are never too old to party at the pool. In the scorching sun, the pool is the perfect place to relax and have fun. Boys get to admire girls in bikinis and girls get to watch the boys show off their moves in the pool or on the grill. MUST HAVE SUNSCREEN SPF is a must regardless of the season. If you are one of those girls who happens to “never burn,” you may be right, but who knows in 10 years if you are one of those girls who does not wrinkle. Sunscreen not only protects your body from harmful UV rays that causes skin to burn, but it also fights off future wrinkles. Make sure you apply well before venturing out the door. You can also buy SPF-infused foundations as well. If you do not want to wear foundation at the pool, we suggest using tinted sunscreen. For the more expensive tinted sunscreen, Sephora carries the Dr. Dennis Gross skin care line. The line’s tinted sunscreen, All-In-One Tinted Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 15, is available in shades ranging from light to medium/dark at a cost of $44. For a less expensive version, try ULTA’s own line, which offers Tinted Self-Tanning Faces Sunscreen Lotion for only $8.99.
MUST HAVE FLOPPY HAT This accessory serves multiple purposes. It makes you look fashionable and sophisticated, but also manages to keep the sun off your face and hair. Many people forget that their scalp can also burn. Not only can your scalp burn, but UVA and UBA rays can also manage to damage your hair causing split ends, weakening, thinning, breaking or fading of its color.
MUST HAVE LIPSTICK WITH SUNSCREEN We don’t all wear makeup to the pool, but one thing you need to protect are your lips. It’s not attractive to kiss someone with dry, cracked or peeling lips. Clinique carries a High Impact Lip Colour with SPF 15 in its formula for only $14.50. If you do not want to splurge on lipstick at a department store, browse the aisles in your local Target or pharmacy to see what they carry.
MUST HAVE WATERPROOF MASCARA For those of you who wear mascara daily, when going to the pool make sure it is waterproof. There is nothing more inevitable than a guy playfully pushing you into the pool, and I’m sure you do not want to emerge looking like Jack Sparrow. 26

THE TRANSFORMATION:
After a long day at the pool before your night out, try to take a quick nap if you have time. This will leave you feeling re-energized before getting ready to go out.
Hair: This season, the “messy side bun” is
all the buzz. To achieve this look, first spray Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray into your hair (available at www.bumbleandbumble.com). This will give you the messy beach look before pulling your hair to the side. To get creative with the side bun, you could put a small French braid on one side of your head. To add that perfect balance of sexy yet sophisticated, situate a flower clip on the side.
Makeup: Using bronzer can only help enhance
your natural summer glow. This summer, let your lips do the talking. For a sleek yet subtle look, we suggest a smoky eye, with a nude or soft peach lip. For a bolder look, try a deep red lipstick. Make sure you choose a blue-red shade rather than an orange-red shade, as blue-reds make your teeth look whiter.
Shoes: Flip flops are always comfortable, but
for a more sophisticated look we suggest going with a wedge or peep-toe pump. Wedges like the Jack Rogers “Marbella Espadrille” are perfect to dress up an outfit. Peep-toe pumps add style and a flirtatious attitude to any ensemble. The nudetone shoe is the must-have right now and can be paired with almost any color.
Outfit: It is always important to feel
comfortable no matter what you are in. When you feel confident you tend to look your best. So no matter if you are trying to go for the relaxed look or the classy look, make sure you feel good! White pants are a great item to dress up. You can pair them with a lacy top (which is also another “must”). It might be a good idea though you bring a Tide to Go pen with you in your purse. Everyone knows white pants are the hardest to keep clean! Maxi dresses are another good option, and can range from causal or dressy with accessories to give you that suave look. This summer, size does matter, as in oversized jewelry. Pair this with any outfit to add a touch of grace and style.
THE TRANSFORMATION:
Although men’s fashion does not change as quickly as women’s fashion, we still have a few items for your sophisticated party night.
Aftershave: After showering, we suggest you
shave or trim up your facial hair. If you are one of the many men who do not enjoy using an aftershave, we suggest using an aftershave lotion or balm. This gives the same effects, the smell and such, but it is not as severe on your skin and does not leaving your skin with the burning sensation. Many aftershave lotions also contain aloe and vitamin E, which contribute to postshave healing.
What to wear?
Depending on how fancy of a night you plan on having, a great suggestion is the double-breasted sports coat. We propose opting for cool summer shades such as tans, whites and beiges. Linen pants are always a cool, comfortable and classic look for men. Button down polos are also a safe bet for the night. Make sure they are ironed to get the crisp, sharp look you are trying to achieve. Pairing them with a loafer or boat shoe (like Sperry) would complete the look.
Final touches: Do wear some sort of cologne – but not too much! There is nothing like the smell of a man’s cologne. It is part of your signature. Just make sure you use it sparingly, not trying to douse yourself in it.
Pool Party Must Haves for the FELLAS BLVD loves our men as much as we love our women, so here is the guys’ guide for transforming from playing in the water to “Can you get any hotter?!” MUST HAVE SUNSCREEN Yes, this is important for both men and women! If you are going to be outside all day you need to be protected. Neutrogena makes sunscreen just for men, and we suggest Neutrogena Men Active Protect Face Lotion.
MUST HAVE SUNGLASSES Shades will keep the sun out of your eyes, stop you from squinting and the girls will not know if you are looking at their tan lines are not. Raybans have made a significant comeback this year and get our approval for the sexy pool look.
MUST HAVE COOZIES Most people would not consider it a party unless someone brings the alcohol. To ensure that your drinks stay cool, make sure to bring your favorite coozie. No outfit is complete without one! Your coozie could also tell a person a lot about yourself.
MUST HAVE HATS You need to protect your scalp and head just as much as the ladies. Wearing a do-rag, baseball cap or the popular fedora will help keep that handsome head of yours safe from the sun’s harmful rays.
KEEP SOME SECRET STASHES
Plant these life savers in key locations so you are always prepared for life’s little nightmares
IN YOUR BEACH BAG: Be sure to stash a small bottle of Ibuprofen in your pool tote. A day in the hot sun can
lead to some serious head pounding headaches, and you definitely do not want to be the party pooper. Stay sharp all day long by taking a couple pain killers at the first sign of a headache.
IN YOUR CAR: Keep an extra pair of flip flops in your car for daytime mishaps. We have all experienced the
inconvenience of a broken flip flop. Ladies, stash a pair of flats in the trunk as well. If you plan on having an evening out in high heels or chunky wedges, you will probably appreciate having a back up if you feel the need.
IN YOUR PURSE/ POCKET: So there is a lengthy list of thing you should probably take with you on a night out. But one of the most overlooked items is chap stick! Gals and guys alike always need to keep a good, moisturizing balm on them at all times. Chapped lips can make you feel outrageously uncomfortable and self conscious.

TO COMMON PARTY PROBLEMS It’s no secret that parties are the hub of social life. They can be anything from the best night of your young existence to a downright dreadful disaster. Here is a comprehensive guide to preventing the latter. IF YOU ARE PRONE TO WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS, CLUMSY FALLS, OR OTHER ACCIDENTS: No one likes to bring a lot to a party. Most gals grab a clutch with essentials and guys are certainly not going to bring anything along that won’t fit in their pockets. But what happens when you spill wine on your new shirt or bust your butt while busting a move? Anyone prone to accidents should always bring an emergency kit to a party. The following few items should easily fit into a deep pocket or purse: • Band-Aids (standard size) • Safety pins • Tide To-Go Pen • 2-4 pain relievers (Advil Travel Packs easily fit into the tiniest of pockets.) • Fashion tape IF YOU EASILY GET SICK FROM DRINKING: You don’t have to drink too much to get sick from alcohol. Some people just have weak stomachs or have prolonged reactions to the amount they are drinking. There is definitely a lot of bogus advice out there for preventing sickness and a hangover. Here are the simple truths. Alcohol causes dehydration, which can lead to a world of pain. You can avoid this very easily by making sure you drink plenty of water.

BANDAIDS: A CLUMSY PARTY GIRL’S BEST FRIEND
By: STACI LAWANDALES
I recommend a bottle of water before you start drinking, a small glass of water with every drink you consume, and a bottle of water before you go to sleep with a couple of Advil. If you still feel sick during the night or in the morning, it is probably due to vitamin deficiency or build-up of toxins. No matter how much water you drink, alcohol still causes an imbalance in your body’s natural chemicals. Don’t wait until you’re hung over the next morning to replenish those vitamins. Have a bottle of Vitamin Water Zero before bed or a glass of orange juice. Make sure you follow up the next morning with a vitamin-rich beverage as well. As for toxin buildup, try filling up on foods that will act as a filter for your body. Believe it or not, fried foods have actual scientific backing when it comes to curing a hangover, as the carbohydrates will help stabilize blood sugar and neutralize stomach acids. Also, soups with a little bit of spice will give you nutrition and help you release toxins through light sweating. Overall, the most obvious way to prevent sickness and hangover is to drink in moderation and avoid beverages/beverage combinations that have made you sick in the past. IF YOU HAVE BREATH ISSUES: Nothing is worse than meeting someone new or chatting up someone you have a crush on when you’re worried about your breath. From French onion dip to beer, parties are full of bad breath promoters. If you’re really paranoid, stick a toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste into your purse. Better yet, invest in some Colgate
WORRIED ABOUT YOUR BREATH? STICK A TOOTHBRUSH AND TRAVEL-SIZED TOOTHPASTE INTO YOUR PURSE JUST IN CASE. Wisps. They are perfectly pocket-sized and have a tongue scraper on the back. Breath mints are great, but obviously don’t have the longevity of gum. Make sure your gum has xylitol in it, as it increases salivation and works to prevent bacteria from replicating in the mouth. When it comes to choosing a flavor, researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago have found that cinnamon flavored gum exhibits the strongest antibacterial effect on the mouth and is most effective at countering bad breath. If you don’t have anything on hand, some recommend having a slice of bread to neutralize the odors. An apple is also a great natural way to clean your mouth and promote fresh breath. IF YOU GET IN A FIGHT WITH A SIGNIFICANT OTHER: There are few faster ways to kill the mood at the party than watching a couple get into a brawl. It seems like people should have better manners by now, but sometimes the combination of drinking and lots of people can make tensions run high. If you find yourself in a skirmish with your beloved at a party, do your best to calmly diffuse the situation until you can talk somewhere else. There is no way you are going to reach any real reconciliation if you are both acting out emotionally in front of a large crowd of people. It will also cause people to view your relationship in poor light, possibly causing friends to lose their trust and respect for your significant other. Make a mutual agreement that you will give things time to sit until you can rationally discuss what is bothering you. If the reason for the argument is vital to the continuation of your relationship, just make a responsible decision to leave the party early and work it out. IF YOU NEVER SEEM TO HAVE ENOUGH FOOD TO FEED EVERYONE: When meal planning for a large group, don’t get too ambitious. If it’s not a small dinner party, you don’t need to be making Chicken Saltimbocca. Try something you can make a lot of for less. Spaghetti, soups, chili, tacos, low country boil, shrimp and grits, hamburgers/hotdogs, and pizza are great
recipes for large groups. My favorite place to find delicious and practical recipes is the Better Homes & Gardens website (BHG.com). If you’re on a budget, make sure you let people know beforehand that you expect them to contribute a couple of bucks for dinner. It’s never good party manners to bombard guests with financial requests when they’re there to enjoy the party you decided to host. IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN A DULL CONVERSATION: Believe it or not, there are polite ways to get out of this situation. Be engaged in the conversation for a few minutes and then gently excuse yourself to make a phone call, get food or drink, or help the host/hostess. Make sure to follow through on your excuse to prevent hurt feelings. To be extra careful, perhaps introduce the person to someone to avoid leaving him or her stranded. The two may even get along! IF YOU DON’T KNOW ANYONE THERE: This is an uncomfortable situation for most of us, even extroverts. Leaving the party before it’s over is certainly an easy option, but be sure to stay for at least an hour out of respect to the host. Otherwise, just simply be open and relaxed. Don’t be afraid to approach circles where conversations are going on. Be sure not to introduce yourself until there is a lull in the conversation. A great way to make yourself feel instantly at ease with people is to be complimentary, helpful and gracious. Making a genuinely nice comment about someone’s jacket or cocktail dress will create a natural positive dynamic between you and another person. From there, ask simple questions such as where they were raised and what they studied/ study in school and why. Most everyone loves talking about themselves, so you should never have to sit in awkward silence at a party while everyone else is having fun. However, if you’re sincerely making an effort but still not hitting it off with anyone, it is completely acceptable to excuse yourself from the party. If you seem lonely or disconnected, you are likely to become a burden to an already busy host. a u g u s t 2011

THE ULTIMATE PARTY PLAYLIST

By: JAMIE BISHOP
BASSNECTAR “WILDSTYLE METHOD” WILDSTYLE EP
MGMT “ELECTRIC FEEL” ORACULAR SPECTACULAR
This jam is best experienced amidst a raging Bassnectar crowd with purple and yellow lights gleaming in the beads of sweat surrounding your brow, your body pulsating from the vibrations of the speakers. However, the same effect can be achieved no matter where it is played. With its mild beginning and hard-hitting core, “Wildstyle Method” will melt you into Jack’s smirking revenge. This supersonic track features 40 Love in a sort of witch’s brew of electronica and dubstep. Crunch a glow stick to life and wait for the drop at 1:04.
This is the second single from MGMT’s debut album, and my personal favorite. Whether you hear this while the San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum warms up or in the remix version by the French electronic duo, Justice, “Electric Feel” is a tune that could get anyone in high spirits. The vagabond instrumentals and high-pitched vocals will send volts of energy from your fingers to your toes and leave you with a sugar high.
a u g u s t 2011
GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY “DANCING ON MY GRAVE” ROBOTIQUEMAJESTIC Ghostland Observatory takes you on a synth journey with their electro-dance rock tune “Dancing on My Grave”. With the use of phasers and shrill vocals, it feels as though you’re finding your way through “The Labyrinth” with David Bowie overseeing your every move. This isn’t only a song to be played at a party, but rather the song that makes you want to have a party.
OH LAND “SUN OF A GUN” OH LAND
Danish singer-songwriter Nanna Fabricius, better known as Oh Land, is a star on the rise. Opening for Katy Perry in her California Dreams Tour in August 2011, it’s obvious that this foreign beauty has exceptional talent. With her delicate yet eerie sound, Oh Land seems to be the hybrid of Tim Burton and Candyland’s Princess Lolly. The single “Sun of a Gun” from her self-titled album displays a throbbing bass line and candy-coated chorus, sounding like a single flower blossoming from the broken floorboards of a haunted mansion. Once a ballerina, Oh Land appears to be the perfect combination of both the white and black swan. “Sun of a Gun” is a perfect way to keep partygoers on their toes. It is an on-going pirouette battling up to the grand finale of the loss or attainment of a risky love.
SLEIGH BELLS “CROWN ON THE GROUND” 2HELLWU (CDR) Recently playing at the 2011 Bonnaroo Music Festival, this blazing Brooklyn electro duo takes treble to new heights in “Crown on the Ground” in order to mimic the sound of metal on metal. To put it mildly, make sure you have some heavy-duty speakers before adding this loud track to your party music repertoire. The synchronization of pounding beats and a lo-fi aesthetic makes “Crown on the Ground” a bone-chilling, mind-piercing experience of boisterous noise. Alexis Krauss emerges from the calamity like a mischievous mermaid luring an entranced sailor into the mysterious waters below with her subtle and charming vocals. Her dainty yet vexing voice is the red silk ribbon adorning a gift that is sure to stimulate and tease your eardrums. Your neighbors may not love you for this one, but your guests certainly will.
CRYSTAL CASTLES “BLACK PANTHER” CRYSTAL CASTLES “Black Panther” is a track from Crystal Castles’ self-titled debut album. The electronic band from Canada is known for its chiptune style, emulating the feel of being inside of technology. This track hypnotizes you with its synth pop mix the way a video game can keep you staring at a television screen for hours. Ethan Kath’s electronica/dance/ techno music paired with Alice Glass’ gypsy vocals spawn a fast synthetic brashness that places you in a virtual reality within seconds with no hopes of returning to the real world. The arcade-esque quality of “Black Panther” makes it a perfect fit for the futuristic motorcycle track in “Tron,” but your living room works too! a u g u s t 2011
31
RATATAT “MEMPHIS BLEEK – ALRIGHT” RATATAT REMIXES, VOL. 2
One can’t go wrong with any Ratatat tune for a party, but as far as upbeat dance music goes, the Ratatat remixes albums are top notch. Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are full of heart-thumping, headnodding, fist-pumping beats. Playing either of these remix albums in their entirety would make for a spectacular party mix. But to choose one, the incorporation of the melodic piano combined with Ratatat’s original beats makes Memphis Bleek’s “Alright” the ideal party song.
SOUND TRIBE SECTOR NINE “RAMONE & EMIGLIO” SEASONS 01 Also snagging a stage at the 2011 Bonnaroo Music Festival was the instrumental band Sound Tribe Sector Nine. Seeping through the band’s electronic dance roots are elements of jazz, hip-hop and funk. Formed in Atlanta, STS9 has gained a strong following in Athens and is a local party favorite. With its smooth rhythm, “Ramone and Emiglio” is an ideal cool-down track for a party and sure to send listeners into a psychedelic state.
32
a u g u s t 2011
JUSTICE “GENESIS” CROSS
The band Justice has said that they frequently place “microsamples” of other artists’ work in their own tracks. Embedded within this upbeat track are samples of Queen, Slipknot and 50 Cent, but due to how “micro” they are, most would not be able to catch them. With its “opera-disco” concept and playful bass lines, “Genesis” is a tune that could go from blasting in Anakin Skywalker’s podracer to fueling a 1970s funky dance battle, surging through power lines and ultimately finding its way straight to your party.
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM “ALL MY FRIENDS” SOUND OF SILVER An American dance-punk band from New York City, LCD Soundsystem released its second album “Sound of Silver” in 2007. From the album, the track “All My Friends” has a soothing yet buoyant quality fit for a dance party wind-down. The single kicks off with a fast-paced piano riff that places you in the backseat of a taxicab buzzing through Times Square at midnight. The cyclic guitar, bass and keyboard lines press your hands against the glass, city lights bleeding, and faces blurring. As lyrics of a life without regret resonate in your in your mind and massage your skull, the busy world seems to drown out of your window.
You’re Cordially Invited! How to Throw a DIY Theme Party
By: Dana Hortman ‘Tis the season to party and have fun! Even though the long days of summer are slowly coming to an end, the celebrating doesn’t have to. Before the fall schedules, studying and football games become a habitual routine, be creative and plan one last memorable hoorah. Don’t know where to start? Have no fear; your personal party planner is here! First, let’s pick a theme. Here are three different, but entertaining themed-parties to throw.
BLACK & white Who?
It’s time to spice up your social scene with a vintage black and white-themed party. From the party attire to the food, leave all colors behind to enter a world of simplicity and sophistication.
Wear?
What to Serve?
Dressy casual is the style for this social gathering. Gentlemen, wear a pair of dress pants and a button-down dress shirt. No ties necessary. Ladies, choose to wear a cocktail dress. Pair it with classic pearls and sleek black stilettos. All attire should be limited to black and white.
Though not all the foods served at your party will be black and white, try to incorporate these tips into your menu:
Turkey and Swiss cheese finger sandwiches on rye or white bread
How to Decorate?
Georgia caviar
Dark chocolate cupcakes with white icing topped with coconut
Oreos dipped in white chocolate
Signature drink: mudslides
Though it is vital to include black and white décor throughout your apartment or house, you may accentuate some color. Silver works best paired with the two, but don’t let it overpower the theme. For table decorations, use alternating white and black tablecloths. For centerpieces, choose white floral arrangements or candles surrounded by silver and white confetti. If you want to go vintage, use old newspapers as placemats or wall decorations. Be sure to use napkins, utensils and serving pieces that go along with your theme.
a u g u s t 2011
33
WINE & cheese What to Serve? Be sure to include variety and foods that will pair well with the wine and cheese. Here are a few menu items you might want to serve: Red and white grapes served with a cream cheese dip
Cheeses (make sure to pair the right cheese with the wine)
Who? Forget the kegs of beer and shots of liquor,
let’s settle down with elegance and host a wine and cheese party. And I don’t mean wine from a box.
Wear? For this occasion, the type of dress varies. However, since it is summer, this wine and cheese party works well with casual attire. For the men, wear a pair of dark-denim jeans with a graphic tee and sneakers. Ladies can choose to wear a nice pair of shorts with a semi-dressy top and Grecian sandals. Any type of casual wear will work.
How to Decorate? This gathering calls
for color, but presented in a simple way. Cover the tables with a simple chic tablecloth. For centerpieces, place small floral bouquets in champagne flutes using daisies or your favorite flower to give each table a pop of color. You may also want to decorate around the bouquets with red or white grapes. To match the theme, use subtle utensils; perhaps choose one color for plates and napkins. When ready to serve, be sure to label all types of cheese, bread and wine. 34

What to Serve? Since the masquerade ball theme is Mardi Gras, the best types of food to serve are traditional Cajun dishes. Here are a few options to serve:
JalapeĂąo poppers with a Cajun ranch sauce
Creole pasta with sausage and shrimp
Who? Let’s travel back to the days of French
Catholic tradition and mix it with a modern twist of bright colors, disguises and Cajun flavor to throw the perfect Mardi Gras themed masquerade ball.

Wear? Unlike the other two parties, the attire for this flamboyant dinner party should be classified as formal. Men may choose to wear a nice black suit and tie or a sleek black tuxedo. Women have the option of wearing a colorful evening gown or a formal cocktail dress. Along with the outfits chosen, each guest should also be equipped with a mask. Masks can be purchased at a costume shop. Also, craft stores such as Michaels have all the necessary materials needed to decorate masks. Either way, try to match your mask to your party attire.
How to Decorate? Mardi Gras means two
things: colorful and gaudy. Since this is a formal dinner party, cover each table with a black table cloth, laying down colorful pieces of blue, pink or purple gauze-type fabric or silk on top. Matching gold placemats are optional. For centerpieces, the choices are endless. Set candle luminaries in the center of each table. Tastefully and carefully surround the displays with colorful beads and feathers. Regular dishware and silverware can and should be used for this party. a u g u s t 2011

Sexy from Head to Toe:
HAIR
Taking Out The Trash From Your Party Look Cute-sexy, pretty-sexy, sexy-sexy, artsy-sexy. Sexy comes in all shapes and sizes, but the one kind of sexy that catches the most unwanted party attention is the never classy trashy-sexy. We have all witnessed this train wreck in heels: see-through tops, way-too-short shorts and bling the size of Texas. Rather than a measure of how much skin you show, sexiness is a measure of how comfortable you are in your skin. As designer Vera Wang once said, “A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes.” By: Jessica Sooknanan Photos by: Allison Love Style: Marilyn , Lindsay Durand, Elliott, and Paige Simpson
MAKEUP Nothing says trashy like caked on makeup that leaves people wondering what you look like when you take off your mask. Make sure your makeup matches the atmosphere of the party. Daring makeup is perfectly fine for night outings, but beware of thick eyeliner during the daytime, especially during scorching summers. To play it safe, apply subtle makeup in neutral shades to enhance skin tone and draw attention to your eyes. Also remember that warm weather encourages caking and creasing, so less is more in summer months.

Your hair should look like it took minutes to style even if it took hours. Sexy hair looks and feels touchable, so go easy on the hairspray and products. For added glam, incorporate hair accessories. Hair accessories are a big DO this season, so don’t be afraid to add a gaudy hair clip. Flowers are also a dainty way to direct attention to your locks. Add a few tiny ones for a forest-nymph feel, or an attention-grabbing one for bold romance.
JEWLERY Going wrong with your jewelry is the fastest way to turn an outfit from a DO into a DON’T. Jewelry shouldn’t contradict an outfit. Pair edgy jewelry with a bold outfit, or sweet, simple jewelry with floral prints to pull a look together. Huge hoop earrings have never looked classy, so just stay away from them.
APPAREL We tend to automatically navigate to the obvious “boobs and booty” when dressing for sexiness, but sometimes the more neglected parts of the body are the most attractive. For example, try drawing attention to the back. Tops with a higher neckline, but a more scooping cut in the back elegantly show skin while preserving dignity. Another way to charmingly bare skin is to show off the shoulders and neck with a strapless dress. Select dresses with necklines that complement rather than enhance cleavage. Check to make sure your outfit passes the fingertip test: if the hemline comes above the fingertips, you may want to rethink the ensemble even if you have the body to pull it off. Getting mistaken for the party entertainment is always a DON’T.
SHOES High heels can work wonders for your legs, but test out shoes of precarious heights prior to the affair. If dancing (much less walking) proves challenging in the shoes, ditch them. Gliding like a graceful gazelle is always preferable over stumbling like a clumsy giraffe. Simply being uncomfortable with the added height of stilettos can also affect your entire posture. Wearing heels can cause you to slouch and bend your knees more, so you may want to trade in your 4-inch heels for a chic pair of flats.
The number one idea to keep in mind while getting dressed for a party is that confidence exudes an appeal that a plunging neckline cannot compete with. When you walk into a party, you want to turn heads because of your impeccable taste and class – not because it seems you only got halfway dressed.

T
he start of a new school year is here once again, and that mean tons of back-to-school barbecues and reunions fully stocked with burgers, potato chips, hot dogs and sweets to satisfy your most outrageous cravings. In essence, it will be the greatest fear of the swimsuitready body you have been working towards since New Year’s Day. But your summer health kick doesn’t have to get stored away along with your swimsuit, and the best part is you can even treat yourself to a few tasty temptations while still maintaining your waistline. U.S. News and World Report, known for ranking the best colleges, hospitals and high schools in the nation, recently released a carefully compiled list of the best diets out there. It found that the most effective diets were the ones that gave participants free rein over the entire food pyramid – yes, even the topmost tier. So to keep your summer body all year long, follow the same ideology prescribed by the best diets. At

those end-of-summer barbecues, you can munch on more than just celery sticks as long as you eat healthier earlier in the week and balance out your caloric intake. The healthy daily caloric intake varies from person to person. Sites like MaywoClinic.com calculate your personal target intake by weighing factors such as age, level of physical activity and body weight. If you plan to keep a close eye on your dress size, check out the site. You may be surprised at the results. Plus, having a general awareness of your target calorie ingestion will keep you scrutinizing the wholesomeness of your meal and snack choices. The number of calories found in common party foods tends to lie on the high end of the number line. According to caloriecount. about.com, a serving of Lay’s Classic potato chips contains 190 calories. A hot dog with the bun and condiments contains roughly 560 calories with 32 grams of fat and a cheeseburger with a white bread bun contains 360 calories with 20 grams of fat. First and foremost, plan ahead

and take some preventative measures. To keep from constantly navigating toward the snack table at parties, make sure you eat a wholesome meal shortly beforehand; this will keep you from substituting dinner with potato chips. Granted, sometimes you just can’t say no to a juicy burger hot off the grill. By limiting your portion sizes, you can guiltlessly indulge on summertime favorites without overeating. Try going “halfsies” on party dishes to get the same satisfaction without the added poundage. Also, opt for lighter options. Consider that light beer contains, on average, 103 calories compared to 153 in a bottle of regular, and Diet Coke contains 0 calories compared to the classic’s 97. If attending the party of a close friend, offer to bring some snacks, or take a grocery trip together. This way, you can thoroughly enjoy the party knowing you are eating healthy. Chips and salsa never fail to spice up a party – try Tostitos’ Baked Scoops with their Spicy All Natural Chunky Salsa. This snack only contains 135 calories per serving and around three grams of fat. Go bananas with a fruit and veggie platter. Produce such as strawberries, watermelon and cucumber are always delightfully refreshing on a hot day. With only a handful of calories per
serving, fruits and vegetables are always a great healthy option. The reason, according to MayoClinic.com, is fruits’ and vegetables’ high water and fiber content. The high water content in greens gives the illusion of a lot of volume when really you are ingesting mostly water. A halfcup of raw carrots, for example, contains 88 percent water and only 25 calories. Fiber provides volume to help you feel and stay full. Because your body digests fiber more slowly than processed foods, you feel full longer on a belly full of nature’s bounty. Fibrous whole grains also provide the same feel-full, stayfull effect, so bring some wholegrain crackers with cheese. Aunt Gussie’s Cracker Flats in sesame flavor contain only 70 calories and one gram of fat per serving. Comparatively, Keebler’s Club crackers contain the same amount of calories and even more grams of fat in only four crackers. Pair the cracker flats with 50-calorie Babybel light cheese and you have a nutritious and filling party snack. So what is the bottom line when it comes to party food? Don’t be afraid to splurge a little. As U.S. World News and World Report discovered, diets tend to be most successful when we allow ourselves a little wiggle room. Who knew that a little splurge may just be the key to a shrinking jean size?

Best Celeb Parties Diddy’s White Party Starting in 1999, Sean John Combs, aka Puff, Puff Daddy or P. Diddy, threw his first “White Party” where guests wore all white ensembles. If guests show up with the smallest accessory of another color, they won’t be getting in. The red carpet is turned white and the who’s who of the entertainment world make sure to stand out in their all-white attire. The party has been held at some pretty fabulous locations: St. Tropez, the Hamptons and Beverly Hills. On the fourth of July in 2009, Diddy turned the event into a fundraiser for Malaria No More alongside the party’s cohost, Ashton Kutcher. Other celebs in attendance: Khloe Kardashian, Russell Brand, Mariah Carey, Chris Brown and Demi Moore. In 2010 the infamous party was put on hold due to Diddy’s tour to promote his latest album “Last Train to Paris,” but not to worry – look for the annual shindig to be thrown again soon.

Heidi Klum’s Halloween Party The best-known Halloween party of the stars is hosted by model and businesswoman extraordinaire, Heidi Klum. The 11th annual costume party took place at LAVO Restaurant, Nightclub, & Lounge in New York City last Halloween. Each year Heidi and husband Seal dress in outrageous getups that beg everyone to take a second look. Heidi’s friend and designer Martin Izquierdo collaborates with the model to construct an outrageous costume, more inventive and interesting than the last. In years past, Heidi has disguised herself in costume as a cat, snake and apple (hence Adam and Eve,) the goddess Annihilation with eight hands and, most recently, a superhero standing 8 feet tall. A variety of celebs have shown up to this party: Russell Simmons, Kim Kardashian, John Legend and Brooklyn Decker, to name a few. If you hope to snag an invite to this seasonal bash, you better go all out!

The 1,539-room hotel opened September 24, 2008, and the world’s most expensive party was scheduled nearly two months later on November 20. More than 2,000 guests attended the beach party, which featured a $6.58 million fireworks display. The biggest event of the evening was the 60-minute performance by Kylie Minogue. Her first-ever performance in the Middle East earned her just over $4 million. Costs of the outrageous beach party are estimated to be over $35 million.

Zazzle Bay to Breakers Taking place on the third Sunday in May, this San Francisco party began in 1906 to lift the spirits of locals after a major earthquake. It began with a 7-mile race that has since turned into a 7-mile costume party and keg race. Over 70,000 people show up each year with crazy costumes and carts full of kegs. C’est la Vie...… SO EAT, DRINK AND PARTY!
BY MORGAN RUSHING
WHO TO INVITE?
THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER
have almost come to an end. Now is the time to plan those last-minute beach trips, to gather those last-minute attempts of sunrays to achieve the ultimate bronzed body and to go out on Tuesday night, before the rigor of school or work creeps its way back into your daily routine. To ease the pain of saying goodbye to summer, why not plan a dinner party with your closest friends? “We invite each other not to eat and drink, but to eat and drink together,” Plutarch. Throwing a dinner party is not the same as throwing a kegger. The same thought process does go into it though, so you are on the right thinking path. Instead of asking yourself, Busch or Bud-Light for the keg, you need to think: Would red or white wine go better with the meat? You will still need to send out invitations, just not one mass Facebook invite or text message with the where-a-bouts. And of course, just like any party, you will need to dress the part.

INVITATIONS: It is still considered rude to not send handwritten invitations. In an age of technology, this might seem unnecessary, but traditional letters of invitation are considered to be thoughtful and polite in society. Calling someone on the telephone to invite them to a dinner party might seem like an easier option, but it forces your guests to make a hasty decision and then you risk the chance of them backing out.
GUEST LIST: In her book, “The Rituals of Dinner,” author Margaret Visser writes, “Varro said that diners should number no fewer than the Graces (three) and no more than the Muses (nine). Thirteen people sitting down to dinner is considered unlucky – and not only because either Judas or Jesus was the thirteenth man at the Last Supper. The superstition is also found in the pre-Christian Greece (where there were, for instance, twelve Olympian gods, so who could be the thirteenth?).” As outdated as this may seem, it still holds traditionally true. Most dining room tables hold, on average, between 8 to 12 people. This is important to note when planning a dinner party so you can make sure that everyone is seated comfortably at your table. Seating arrangements also need to be taken into consideration. Just like at weddings, most people plan where their guests will sit. You can indicate their seats by making place cards. An innovative
idea for place cards is to get wine bottle corks and slice the side horizontally. After you have done this you can insert your place card. You also need to think about the number of couples you are inviting versus the number of single friends. You want to create an ambiance of balance at your dinner party.
WHAT TO EAT?
BLVD created a sample summertime menu to help you when planning your dinner party. (When planning a menu it is always important to be aware of your guests’ food allergies prior to dinner). Bon appétit!
APPETIZER: INSALATA CAPRESE SALAD
MAIN DISH: GRILLED RACK OF LAMB as published in “Taste of Home’s Holiday & Celebrations Cookbook 2001” Ingredients: • 2 cups apple cider or juice • 2/3 cup cider vinegar • 2/3 cup thinly-sliced green onions • 1/2 cup canola oil • 1/3 cup honey • 1/4 cup steak sauce • 2 teaspoons dried tarragon • 2 teaspoons salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 4 racks of lamb (1-1/2 to 2 pounds each) Directions • In a large saucepan, combine the first nine ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Remove 1 cup for basting; cover and refrigerate. Pour the remaining marinade into a large zip-close plastic bag; add lamb. Seal bag and turn to coat; refrigerate for two to three hours or overnight, turning once or twice.
Ingredients: • 2 large fresh heirloom tomatoes. Make sure the tomatoes are washed, evenly sliced into 1/4 inch rounds and seeded. • 1 pound fresh mozzarella. Cut the mozzarella into ¼-inch slices. • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil • Fresh basil leaves, hand-shredded • Fresh ground pepper and salt (to preference) (Serves approximately four) Calories: 311 Preparations: When serving, arrange the plate by alternating tomato slices, basil leaves and mozzarella cheese. Lightly pour the extra-virgin olive oil over top. Lastly, add the fresh ground pepper and salt to your preference. This dish can be served alone or with added fresh bread to complete it. To ensure you get the freshest taste possible and help out the farmers in your area, go to your local Farmers Market for ingredients. Check out www. athensfarmersmarket.net for locations.
• Drain and discard the marinade. Cover rib ends of lamb with foil. Using long-handled tongs, moisten a paper towel with cooking oil and lightly coat the grill rack. Grill, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from the heat for 15 minutes. • Baste with reserved marinade. Grill or broil 5 to 10 minutes longer, or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a meat thermometer should read 145°; medium, 160°; well-done, 170°), basting occasionally. (Serves approximately eight)
To serve alongside your grilled rack of lamb you could chose a vegetable of your choice, such as grilled asparagus, or a grilled shish kabob consisting of alternating green bell peppers, red peppers and onions.

DESSERT Some consider this the best part of the meal. To beat the heat and still stay healthy, you could serve fresh fruit with homemade ice-cream. For those who crave a southern classic, you could finish off your meal with homemade banana pudding.
FOOD NETWORK’S PAULA DEEN’S BANANA PUDDING Ingredients • 3/4 cup sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • 3 cups milk • 4 egg yolks • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 ounces (1/2 stick) butter • 3 medium bananas, sliced • 1 (12-ounce box) vanilla wafers Directions Mix together sugar and cornstarch and slowly add milk. This should be cooked in the top of a double boiler, but you can cook it over low to medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens; do not leave it unattended. Slightly beat egg yolks and temper with a small amount of the hot custard; stir well. Add egg mixture to custard pot and cook 2 more minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla and butter. Let cool.
WHAT TO WEAR:
We have all been there before or know someone who has showed up to a party and are either under or over dressed. You feel self-conscious the whole night. It is like the scene out of “Mean Girls” where Cady Heron, played by Lindsey Lohan, shows up to the Halloween party dressed like a scary ex-wife and was apparently the only girl who did not get the “dress like an animal slut memo.” To make sure that this does not occur, it is the job of the host to inform the guests of the type of dinner party they will attend. Natalie of Cheeky Peach Boutique in Athens suggests that most women are adorning themselves in floral dresses, tunics and rompers this summer. She also suggests pastel colors and “breezy” dresses, which are perfect trends for dinner parties. Cheeky Peach carries designer lines such as Bluebird and Ryu. You also don’t have to break the bank when shopping there because everything in the store is under $100. This season, men should consider wearing a polo shirt, such as the Southern Tide polos found at Dick Ferguson’s Clothing Store or Gibson of Athens. A nice pair of linen pants or khaki shorts would be appropriate to pair with the polo.
In a 9x9-inch ovenproof baking dish, alternate pudding, bananas and wafers, beginning with pudding and ending with pudding. Add topping, if desired.
Whether it is the school year that is quickly approaching, or returning back to work-mode mentality, a dinner party is a great excuse to dine with friends and have some last-minute fun!

You may not believe in miracles, but you should believe in the wonders of Urban Decay’s ingenious product: All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray ($29). Simply spray over your foundation and other makeup and forget about your face for the rest of the night. No more worrying about melting foundation and lackluster cheeks – this spray has superpowers that help makeup stay put, look vibrant and appear as if it was applied fresh, even at 3 a.m. after a few too many cocktails. Your skyhigh stilettos may have failed you for the night, but your makeup sure won’t. • Underneath the setting spray, choose a foundation that will stay with you all night. The creamy, smooth formula of Maybelline Superstay Foundation does a stellar job at covering without concealer. And, at $9 a bottle, you can afford to look eternally flawless – well, at least until you wash your face. • Quick tip: eye shadow primer is yet another miracle worker that you must have stashed in your makeup bag. A number of brands have concocted their own versions, but my personal long-lasting favorite is the Urban Decay Primer Potion ($18), which comes in four incredibly rich shades. Shadow primer helps shadows and liner stay in place for hours and appear more saturated and vibrant on your lids. Apply after your foundation and before your eye shadows to ensure a sweat-proof and long night-proof look. • To maintain a fresh look all night, use oil-blotting sheets. Stick with a tried-and-true classic: Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets ($5), because they really do work. These magic blue sheets only remove unwanted oils, not your makeup. Stash these in your evening bag or clutch for speedy touch-ups. THESE ESSENTIALS KNOW HOW TO KEEP THE PARTY GOING ALL NIGHT LONG:

SAY ‘I DO’ TO THESE WEDDING MAKEUP BASICS: NYX Cosmetics Concealer in a Jar ($5.50), MAC Select Sheer/Loose powder for $23 ($29) Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion ($30), Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear polish ($3)
‘Tis the season to be married! Watching one of your best friends tie the knot with her Prince Charming or his Cinderella can make for a sweet day, but the summer months bring a notso-sweet combination of heat, humidity and unpredictable weather that do absolutely nothing good for your makeup. Even if you attend a nice air-conditioned ceremony and reception, you still want your face to stay put all day and your manicure to look fresh during all that toasting to the happy couple. • The face primer debate continues, but my vote is YES. Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion ($30) offers a fantastic satiny-smooth finish. Apply a small dab to your entire face after your moisturizer, and then layer on your foundation and concealer. Your makeup will not budge for hours, and your pores truly will appear to have shrunk. • Choose a creamy concealer, like the super concentrated NYX Cosmetics Concealer in a Jar ($5.50), to mask any imperfections or skin discoloration. Its formula outlasts long, hot days with ease, keeping you covered through anything. • My best piece of advice for a daytime affair: set your foundation and concealer with a fine, loose powder. MAC makes a great one called Select Sheer/Loose powder for $23. This silky smooth powder sits on top of your liquid makeup, keeping it in place for the entire day, and absorbs excess oils. Lightly buff the powder onto your face using a large kabuki brush and watch your complexion instantly improve. • What is the best long-wearing nail polish for fingers and toes? My vote is for Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear polish. For only $3, you can choose a budget-friendly way to try the color of the season, vibrant tangerine, in the shade Sun Kissed. Swipe a clear top coat over two coats of the happy orange hue to finish the job.

SPLISH SPLASH
A pool party is no place to show off the entirety of your makeup collection in layer after layer on your face. You want to avoid caking on anything, even though you may be tempted considering how exposed the sun’s rays can make anyone feel. • If you do require coverage, go for a lightweight tinted moisturizer that blends well with your natural skin tone. Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer SPF15 ($24.50) is a great choice that will stay put for hours and offers a bonus – sun protection. • Swipe on a thickening waterproof mascara in a color that suits you best in natural sunlight. While most waterproof formulas are harsh on lashes and require entirely too much effort to remove, Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping Waterproof Mascara ($7) will never budge, even when you go for a dip, yet comes off easily with makeup remover. Bonus: its formula is long lasting, thickness maximizing, and helps lashes grow longer, too. • Avoid anything containing sparkles, shimmer or glitter; the sun will only emphasize how unnatural products with those ingredients are when applied on your face. • Apply an SPF-infused lip balm, and you are good to go. Blistex Deep Renewal Lip Protectant/
MAKE A SPLASH WITH THESE POOLSIDE BASICS: Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping Waterproof Mascara ($7) , Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray ($9-$12), Blistex Deep Renewal Lip Protectant/ Sunscreen ($3),Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer SPF15 ($24.50)
Sunscreen ($3) includes SPF 15 and has anti-aging properties in its formula containing the coenzyme Q-10. • Remember: slathering on sunscreen containing an SPF of at least 15 is crucial for warding off the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. The latest sun protection craze is sunblock that can be applied directly to wet skin. Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray ($9-$12) comes in SPF 30, 50, and 85+. Apply often and sport some cute shades to protect your precious peepers.
Take It Off When the day (or night) is done, follow party animal Ke$ha’s advice and take it off. Long-lasting formulas can be harsh on your face if not removed properly, and you absolutely must not sleep in your makeup! Cleansing and makeup removal is the best way to avoid bacteria buildup and breakouts and maintain healthy, happy skin. • Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type. Oily, acne-prone types should go for a clear, foaming cleanser that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Dry skin types should opt for a creamy and moisturizing cleanser that won’t strip away skin’s valuable natural oils. • To remove stubborn waterproof mascara and eye shadow primer, opt for cold cream instead of the usual eye makeup remover. Pond’s Classic Cold Cream ($4.50) lays on thick and gets rid of every trace of mascara, shadow and liner. Simply massage into skin, then wipe away with a tissue. Voilà! Your makeup will be gone – no scrubbing needed.

Champagne party dreams on a beer budget? Follow these tips to throw the ultimate party, regardless of the budget.

WHILE PLANNING A PARTY, expenses can add up quickly, and running out of money at the last minute when you have yet to buy drinks would not make for happy guests. Here are some awesome money-saving tips that still allow you to throw a party everyone will love! Forget the cute cards people will only toss aside and forget about. Use email or make a Facebook event instead, both of which people are more likely to check and you can easily send updates and see who’s coming and not coming. Why spend money on 56

personalized invites that will get thrown away when you can send an e-vite for free? Do not try to please everyone with drinks. Decide on two or three that you would like to serve and go with that. Remember, alcohol can add up quickly, so stick to beer, wine and soft drinks. As for food, unless you are hosting a dinner party, skip the big meal and continue the hors d’oeuvres throughout the event. Pass on buying organics; if people are hungry, they will nibble on whatever you have. Focus on the presentation of
the food, which will cost you nothing, rather than on what is being served. Seafood and fancy desserts add up. The cheapest way to handle the food portion of your party? Make it a potluck! People are always willing to bring a plate, so don’t hesitate to ask. A simple solution to running out of money for desserts: request that guests provide the treats. To offer variety in the party’s music department, choose a DJ rather than a band. DJs may run cheaper because, with a band, each member has to be paid, rather than just one person. If

you want to have music for free, pull out the trusty iPod. Pretty much everyone has one these days and, if your party is a little larger, ask around to see if you can borrow some speakers. No one will think twice if the music is good!
Remember, give yourself plenty of time to plan. The more time you give yourself to prepare, the more time you will have to compare prices and focus on a budget. Waiting until the last minute leaves you more likely to be frivolous and more likely to buy whatever you see first. If you have to, cut down the guest list because more guests equals more costs.
If you are going to spend money on something, make it the dĂŠcor. White paper plates are cheap, but they also look cheap. It is pretty much a given that at least one of your guests will enjoy taking pictures of everyone, and of course candids are always the best and most memorable snapshots. TEE PARTY
WHO SAYS you have to slip on a constricting, slinky dress to attend that upcoming party? A T-shirt can be just as, or even more, chic than a fussy frock and, chances are, you will feel more relaxed when you’re wearing the comfiest piece in your wardrobe. Read on for five ultra-easy ways to sport a simple, no-fuss tee to your next fling.

1. COME SAIL AWAY Gap, $16 at Cillies A navy and white striped tee looks super cute for casual or dressy get-togethers. Ride the waves of summer’s nautical trend a while longer, and you’ll be the cutest little sailor at the party. WHEN TO WEAR IT: a friend’s birthday bash or surprise party HOW TO WEAR IT: Pair the busy stripes of the tee with a skirt in a solid, bold color. If you dare to try out 58

the long lengths trend, pick a floor-grazing skirt, or just stick with your trustworthy little above-theknee number. The combination of navy and white works well with bright tangerine or rich emerald green. You can also opt for the classic nautical look: navy and white with red. Cinch your waist with a tan skinny leather belt and for jewelry choose casual rope-themed pieces and simple gold stud earrings. And the perfect shoe to tie this look together? The super-easy-to-walk-in wedge, in a color that goes with everything: tan.
2. …IN MY WHITE TEE Hanes ComfortSoft, Pack of 3 for $12 at Target A crisp, PLAIN WHITE T-SHIRT goes with just about everything you own (or everything you could possibly think about owning) whether you adore a daring deep V or tend to go for a classic crew neck instead. Switch things up a bit and ditch the boring white tee plus denim look. Try a zesty take: bright, clean white with a look-at-me-now noticeable print. • WHEN TO WEAR IT: a back-to-school celebration with friends or an after-party • HOW TO WEAR IT: To make this closet staple work as party wear, sport the T-shirt tucked into eclectic and bold patterned shorts. Tribal patterns are especially playful for late summer. Pair with chunky ‘70s-inspired platform heels in a neutral shade and an armful of bright fabric bangles to complete the outfit and to complement the print of the shorts.
3. SHEER CLEAR OF ORDINARY Urban Behavior, $20 at Flirt Fashions Add a bit of allure and sophistication to your outfit by incorporating a semi-sheer tee to the mix. When paired with the right accompaniments, you will feel sophisticated and not promiscuously seethrough. Coordinate diaphanous fabrics with more substantial materials to achieve balance, and always layer over a simple camisole for adequate coverage. • WHEN TO WEAR IT: a chic dinner party or bridal shower •HOW TO WEAR IT: Choose a sheer tee in a neutral shade (or a soft pink, like we did here), and tuck into a pair of fitted ankle-skimming trousers in a hue that you deem appropriate for the event. You can never go wrong with a black pant, but there is no harm in being daring and opting for a non-traditional citrus shade, either. The key is to include appropriate accessories. Select a thick metal chain necklace and a shiny cuff to decorate your wrist. Finish with either smart, structural heels or effortless flats.
4. IT’S ELECTRIC S&S Clothing, $22 at Pitaya An ultra-bright neon pink, green or yellow T-shirt will do the trick to prove you are a master of
summer’s most noticeable trend. Vibrant shades that resemble highlighters and DayGlo paint look surprisingly and utterly chic when paired with clean, understated neutrals. You won’t feel overthe-top if you approach the trend with balance in mind. • WHEN TO WEAR IT: a life celebration (engagement, graduation, housewarming) • HOW TO WEAR IT: Two of my favorite ways to sport this look involve sequins and white. The first outfit idea is to tuck your neon T-shirt into a spunky gold sequined mini. Top off the tee with a structured white or black blazer and a simple, yet solid gold bib necklace. The second, less flashy, outfit: chic white shorts or pants and a skinny leopard print belt to add a dose of pattern. In this case, you can never go wrong with a solid pair of heels. If you decide to wear white shorts, pick nude-colored shoes with a chunky heel to offer more substance. A thicker heel paired with shorts can even help make you appear slimmer and your legs longer.
5. RELAX, DON’T DO IT! Free People, $68 at Flirt Fashions When you discover the perfect relaxed tee it’s like you have found a best friend. It’s even better when the tee has fun embroidery along its edges. Soft cotton slub jersey that hangs away from the body is almost too good to be true, especially in the form of a go-to T-shirt with unexpected details. • WHEN TO WEAR IT: a bonfire or barbecue • HOW TO WEAR IT: Choose a color that is just as relaxed as this tee’s style. I love a soft, creamy heathered oatmeal shade, or even a deep burnt olive hue for the end of summer. Pair with distressed denim shorts and leave the shirt out rather than tucking it in. Accessorize with a fun mixed-media necklace (meaning it’s made of various materials: thread, metal and beads, for example) in vibrant hues. Keep up with the time by sliding a classic men’s-style leather or metal watch over your wrist. Sneakers will play along with the relaxed nature of this look and be ideal for trekking your way to roast some s’mores and hot dogs.
