our interaction with color My project “Our Interaction with Color”, is a modern day take on the original Josef Albers “Interaction of Color”. By dimentionalizing the flat plates I am able to bring a deeper understanding of color theory to the viewer. The aim of this project is to develop through experience an eye for color, specifically seeing color action as well as color relationships.

To fully understand all of the possible ways that different colors interact with each other I first needed to create a way to see color in a three dimensional space. Using clear plastic cubes colored with the primar y colors I was able to not only have light pass through each color but also have light pass through t wo cubes/colors at the same time, thus showing how dif ferent colors interact with one another.

The second phase of the project involved revisiting Josef Albers,

“Interaction of Color”. This seminal book on color theory, although good, lacks a proper display of color interaction and only has a handful of color plates (samples) to look at. I took my original color cubes and translated them into a two dimensional space showing basic color theor y. Then when the three cubes were not sufficient to show proper color interaction I created a set of 27 separate cubes each with their own smaller cubes inside. Using this larger cube I was able to show how multiple layers of color interact.

urban density Urban density is a term used in urban planning and urban design to refer to the number of people inhabiting a given urbanized area. It is considered an impor tant factor in understanding how cities function. This book complies population data from some of the most populated cities on the planet gathered for my thesis research.

By studying population densities across the globe I was able to at tain a base line data set for researching my thesis, Living Urbanism. Through my research I found that although cities are growing physically in size, they are growing in density at an even faster rate. This increase in density within the cit y creates a unique set of problems that can only be understood when you are able to examine massive amounts of data. Urban Density takes this data and displays it in easier to understand information graphics and visual patterns. The text it self is also presented in an ever increasing density as the book progresses, further emphasizing the increase in density.

we are watching you We Are Watching You, is a project that explores the dif ferent ef fects that surveillance has on society. By using government spy vernacular, the reader is taken into the world of not only watching but also being watched. As a participant, you are then asked about the legitimacy of voyeurism vs. security and how this impacts life in a society with no privacy.

T his project began with a simple task; a self por trait. When I began to document my self around my apartment I became increasingly more aware of what it was like to be watched in voyeuristic fashion. The study of being watched then expanded to include the streets around me and ultimately societ y as a whole. I began to contrast the ways in which gover nment (legal and illegal) watches their citizens and how the people being watched reacted to the surveillance. A set of dossiers were created to house all of my research and inter views along with a reference guide, sur veillance packet, forged passports and audio recordings.

This book examines the psychology of Gnosis as a personal experience walking across the Golden Gate Bridge.

This book is a photographic journey across the Golden Gate Bridge through the lens of experiencing gnosis. Since it was my first time walking across the bridge I documented everything I saw, the emotions I felt and the many different people I met along the way. In the book the reader is confronted with not only the physical structure of the bridge but also many of the emotional responses associated with the journey.

the guy ritchie film festival Celebrating Guy Ritchie's films, Cokney'd Crime explores the genre of the English gangster movie and cockney rhyming slang. By studying the different elements of Guy Ritchie's British gangster movies I was able to find that the common theme was not the characters themselves, but rather the culture that each of them comes from. This cockney subculture of England's lower class has its own unique style, colors and textures.

Basing the majority of my deliverables off of the movies themselves, I was able to create a set of limited edition items that would be given away at the movie festival. The festival set includes: a festival summer y book, sound track with book, dvd box with four movies and movie guide, two tickets, a festival schedule, a bottle of scotch, a cockney slang dictionary, three sets of matches and the festival poster. All of these are contained in an aluminum shotgun case (in reference to Ritchie's most famous movie) with a place for each item carved out of the foam inserts.

The new Atari philosophy brings the gamer out of the basement and into an environment where social connection is emphasized over individual play. As soon as you arrive we alleviate all of the misconceptions about what gaming used to stand for and develop a new way to socialize and connect with those around you.

Atari founded in 1972, was once a ver y well known video game/console manufacturer. With sales taking a huge drop in the early 90's, Atari needed a way to connect with the audience it once had and attract new ones. Enter the Atari Entertainment Center. The development of this central gaming and socializing environment focuses on the interaction of people over stand alone gaming. Visitors can interact via smar t phone, data chip kiosks and even play the original Atari games. When a more personal touch is needed, visitors can dine in several family restaurants or adults can stay late and socialize at one of the many bars throughout the center. The entire project is contained in a branding refresh book that will be distributed to current and future investors.

Enter in the PG&E PHEV Power Program. One of the key reasons why plug-in hybrid vehicles are not gaining public interest is that their ef fective range is limited to shor t trips which makes daily commutes to and from work not possible for most people. Until battery technology improves, the public needs a way to charge their PEHV at charging stations around city centers.

avant garde gothic Typography 2 is a class that explores typographic form through the throrough examination of one t ypeface. My t ypeface was Avant Garde Gothic. ITC Avant Garde Gothic is a font family based on the logo font used in the Avant Garde Magazine. Herb Lubalin devised the logo concept and its companion headline typeface, then he and Tom Carnase, a partner in Lubalin's design firm, worked together to transform the idea into a full-fledged typeface.

epson: tell your story Epson has been helping people communicate for more than 100 years, but its current line of packaging fails to represent this. Enter "Tell Your Story", a new corporate vision from Epson. By literally showing the many ways humans have communicated throughout histor y, then weaving them together to create a physical bond/link between each one, the consumer is immediately presented with Epson's core philosophy.

Epson's core product in the US is paper, but the current packaging fails to represent what people actually use the paper for: to communicate. To emphasize the link that Epson has with communication I gathered images from past and present history that represent all the forms of human communication. I then printed them on strips of paper and physically weaved them together to create a quilt like pattern. Once this quilt was made, I then created a die-line for the 8.5" x 11" paper box and turned the quilt into the box.

living urbanism Like many students I began my thesis process with a completely different topic, namely Coastal Urbanism. Since I am originally from Hawaii I felt a deep connection to beach culture and therefore wanted to study its usage and zoning in an urban environment. The more I began to study this topic, the more I began to realize that what I really wanted to study was not just the usage of coastal land but all urban land in general. I took a step back and drew connections between the land and the people the live on it.

I found that this connection extended way past parks, schools

and business districts; it intertwined with ever ything that defines urban life in general. This is where I began the bulk of my thesis research. I first had to find out what it really meant to be living in an urban environment and what made it so different from everything else. Then once I found this out I began to look at the people that live in this environment and examine what it takes for a population to successfully grow in it. By studying the impact that the built environment had on the population living and interacting with it, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of what exactly makes a livable cit y. This is where my thesis Living Urbanism exists.

By researching in the fields of urban planning, zoning, the new urbanist movements, gentrification, developer practices and neighborhood boards I was able to gather data from multiple fields. When all the data was compiled I then took to the streets to document the research I had found in real time. I compiled this data into a unifying kit of parts that included a set of books, a Lego community planning kit, an advertising campaign, iphone altered reality application and an identity system. With this kit people from both sides of the urban planning movement can come together with the same data and speak the same language, eliminating some of the misunderstandings that come with discussing such a complex subject.
