Dear Bishop Montgomery Families & Friends,
We hope that with the publication of our annual magazine you and your loved ones are well as we continue in the Year of the Dragon: 2024. It is with great honor that I welcome you to our newly re-branded BMHS Magazine
Dr. Michele Starkey ’85 and I are ushering in a new era of leadership at Bishop with the President and Principal model. It is new to our Bishop community, but not new to Catholic education. I am excited to collaborate with her and all of our amazing faculty and staff as we continue to expand student opportunities and the Knights brand. I am in my 36th year in Catholic education, and my 22nd year as the head of a school. Each day or night I am here, I grow more and more confident in the enduring value of a Bishop Montgomery education, rooted in our Catholic values and inspired by our rich legacy.
This immediately became apparent at the Class of 1974 50th reunion. Thank you to Mr. Andy Marafino, Mr. Steve Miller, and our amazing Facilities/Maintenance team led by Mr. Manny Garcia, along with amazing parent volunteers. The alumni welcomed me and were beaming with fond memories and Bishop Pride. I look forward to building a relationship with all of our students, alumni, parents, faculty, and staff as we grow Bishop Montgomery High School.
Our school remains a beacon of hope and opportunity within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the South Bay. Bishop is more than a school; for many students it is their second home as they spend more awake hours here than at home. Therefore, we are 100% committed to ensuring all students excel academically, athletically, artistically, and in service and leadership.
With that, I would like to share my strategic priorities this school year as the first President of Bishop Montgomery High School:
• Build relationships
• Learn and support school culture
• Collaborate to create a vision
• Form and orient a new Advisory Board
• Audit student programs/services for effectiveness
• Expand enrollment and retention
• Create a community culture of philanthropy
• Collaborate to create a Strategic Plan
In these uncertain times of world wars and political chaos in the US, the value of a Bishop Montgomery education shines brighter than ever. As our Bishop Montgomery community navigates these global challenges, we remain dedicated to shaping the next generation of compassionate leaders and ensuring access to a quality values-based education for all. With your continued leadership and support, we can uphold our mission of providing a diverse student body with a college-prep education rooted in our Catholic identity. There is so much to celebrate at Bishop.
I would like to finish off this welcome letter with a recognition and thank you to this last year’s twenty-four valedictorians and our two All-Americans: Jordin Blackmon in girls' basketball and two-time All-American Jack O’Shaughnessy in boys' swimming. We are truly the home of Servant Leaders, Scholars, and Champions!
Yours in Christ,
Patrick Lee President
VERITAS MAGAZINE IS NOW BMHS MAGAZINE
As we enter into a new era of Bishop Montgomery High School with the establishment of a new leadership model, we have made the decision to re-brand our magazine. In 2007, we began publishing Veritas for our community of alumni, students, parents and friends. It has been a joy to share with you all the amazing things going on in the Bishop community, from life on campus to news and features about our faculty, staff, students and alumni. We will continue to share with you all that is going on in the school community, only under a different name - BMHS Magazine
We hope you enjoy reading our publication as much as we enjoy sharing it with you. Go Knights!
On a Mission
Bishop Montgomery High School welcomes a new leadership model - and two
Mission to Lead
Lee, a native of Long Beach and a graduate of St. John Bosco High School, most recently served as the President/ Principal of St. Francis High School in Watsonville for 12 years and has been a leader in education for over 35 years. As BMHS’ President, Lee’s primary role will be to lead the school in its Catholic identity, vision and strategic planning, board development and financial affairs, and marketing, enrollment and fundraising activities. It is a role he has thrived in at his previous schools and he is excited about returning to his southern California roots. “Being the first President is very exciting,” says Lee. “Bishop Montgomery is a great school with a new leaders - to the community.
Mission. Each day, it is our goal at Bishop Montgomery to fully live our mission of providing a diverse student body with a college-preparatory education that is rooted in Catholic identity. Our mission drives all that we do in the classrooms and labs, on the fields, courts and stages, and in our relationships with each other. It has been our guiding principle since the day Bishop Montgomery opened its doors in 1957. As BMHS enters a new era of leadership with the establishment of a President-Principal model, our commitment to our mission - and to our students - is stronger than ever.
When Dr. Jim Garza stepped down from his role as principal to care for his elderly mother (see sidebar, below), the Archdiocese of Los Angeles took the opportunity to help BMHS transition to the PresidentPrincipal model of leadership. It is a model designed to help take the school to the next level of growth in terms of facilities, curriculum, student and faculty development and much more. Enter Bishop’s first President, Mr. Patrick Lee, and our fourteenth Principal, Dr. Michele Starkey ‘85, two dynamic leaders who are positioned to lead BMHS into a new and exciting time in the school’s history.
What, exactly, is the President-Principal model? In business terms, the President acts as the Chief Executive Officer; the Principal is the Chief Operating Officer. In an educational setting, the President is charged with many of the external relationships and aspects of the school, whereas the Principal will focus on internal, day-to-day operations. As Lee and Starkey begin their tenures at BMHS, they are thrilled to be working together and excited to be at a school that is both familiar and welcoming.
At the end of December, Dr. Jim Garza announced his resignation as principal to prioritize the care of his 101-yearold mother. During his five and half years as principal, Bishop Montgomery experienced growth in enrollment, increased financial reserves, and the successful implementation of various school-wide initiatives. These include introducing the weekly Examen prayer, establishing programs such as
Project Lead the Way Engineering, AP Capstone, and Link Crew freshman orientation. Dr. Garza played a key role in renovating the new STEAM center, upgrading both the athletic weight room and Student Services center, establishing the DEJ Office, and acquiring new desks, chairs and 85” interactive monitors for all classrooms. Notably, he adeptly led the school through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully transitioning to online and hybrid learning. We express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Garza for his unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership at Bishop Montgomery.
long legacy, a rich tradition of excellence and a wonderful community.”
For Starkey, being hired as Principal is a full-circle moment. She is a 1985 Bishop graduate (nee Benson) who returned after college to teach before moving on to a career as an administrator in higher education. For her, Bishop is home. She met her husband, Matt ‘83, here and their children, Conor ‘16, and Brenna ‘18, are also Bishop graduates. As Principal, she will oversee the academic affairs of the school, including curriculum and faculty development, activities and student affairs. Having previously served as an Associate Provost at Mount Saint Mary’s University and a Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Woodbury University, the position of BMHS Principal is a role ideally suited for her skills.
“I have always wanted to come back to Bishop Montgomery to serve as Principal,” she says. “God was pulling me in this direction because Bishop is a special place and the timing was perfect.”

"I am thrilled to be named the first president of Bishop Montgomery High School. The school has a tradition of excellence in all aspects of Catholic education, and I look forward to expanding our status as the premiere high school of choice in the South Bay. I am a product of Catholic education, and firmly believe my 35 years working and leading two different Catholic high schools sets me up to lead Bishop Montgomery to the next chapter of its storied history.”
For both Lee and Starkey, one of the things they both are most looking forward to as they begin their tenures is ensuring that Bishop Montgomery continues to be mission-driven; that starts with building relationships with all stakeholders - students, faculty, parents, alumni, and friends. For Lee, developing relationships with students, faculty, parents and alumni is critically important to continuing the family and community atmosphere that is prevalent at BMHS. “Something that drew me to the job [at BMHS] was that welcoming feeling you know is part of the school,” says Lee, who pointed to the white board in his new office with a message of welcome waiting for him on his first day. Starkey is excited to reconnect with familiar faces as well as meet new stakeholders in the mission, and she plans to be there to listen first and foremost. “I am looking forward to hearing the ideas that people in our community have
on how we can continue to make Bishop a great place,” she says. “I want to listen to everyone, but I also want to be sure that our stakeholders are aware of our mission; tying everything to our mission is key.”
During the interview process, both Lee and Starkey expressed their desires to work at Bishop Montgomery because it was an opportunity to lead a school that already has so many wonderful qualities: great students and faculty, a thriving curriculum, endless opportunities for student leadership and a welcoming atmosphere. They also are ready to help the school grow by implementing some of their own ideas, all with the assistance of the stakeholders.
As BMHS embarks on another accreditation cycle, Lee is ready to dive into the process and knows that it will help him learn the inner workings of the school. He is also looking forward to developing the advisory board and drafting a collaborative and comprehensive strategic plan for the school. Even before her official start date, Starkey was already thinking about ways to implement some new ideas into the curriculum, including focusing on career exploration for every student. “I think it is important that we explore ways to help students think about career paths that are out there for them and tie that into the classroom,” says Starkey.
As our mission states, BMHS “forms leaders, critical thinkers, and individuals who are prepared to integrate world knowledge with Catholic beliefs and values.” Not only does that apply to students, it applies to faculty, staff and all other stakeholders as well. Our new leaders, Lee and Starkey, bring with them years of Catholic educational experience and knowledge and they are excited about the future of Bishop Montgomery - for the school and, most importantly, for the current and future students who will walk the halls.

Helping Others
Arya Mostofi '25 is Making a Difference at BMHS and
From an early age, BMHS senior Arya Mostofi ‘25 has wanted to be a doctor. Growing up in a home where both his mom and dad are oncologists and hematologists at City of Hope South Bay, he has witnessed the impact his parents have had on their patients and he wants to have a similar impact. But Mostofi is not waiting until he is a doctor; he is already prioritizing helping others through his service in the Bishop community and beyond.
As president of Bishop’s Cancer Support Club, Mostofi has helped organize an assortment of projects aimed at helping those with cancer, whether it is through partnerships with City of Hope or with other organizations. In just the last year, he has helped organize the club to provide Valentine’s Day cards for City of Hope patients, spearheaded one of Bishop’s Denim Day collections to donate funds to City of Hope’s Cancer Support Group, and helped gather and distribute goodie bags for patients to help comfort them while they are undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
In April, Mostofi and his classmates in the Cancer Support Club volunteered their time at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Downtown Torrance. The event, one of thousands held throughout the country, brings people together to support and celebrate cancer survivors and caregivers. At the event, Mostofi and his peers worked at the Providence Little Company of Mary/City of Hope South Bay booth with BMHS alumna Kathy Baumgartner-Marafino ‘85, a Nurse Navigator who works directly with his parents and other oncologists. During the day, they helped provide free sun screenings, handed out information regarding City of Hope’s services and helped guests with survey cards regarding their needs. The impact he and his classmates had helped make it a memorable event. "Arya is an engaging young man who is clearly very passionate about helping others and it was wonderful to have him help represent Little Company and City of Hope," says Marafino. "He and his classmates who were at the Relay made everyone who they helped feel special and cared for. Their smiles and energy provided hope for everyone who we met that day."
Mostofi and his fellow club members are already looking for new ways to help cancer patients in the coming year. In addition to raising more money to purchase items for more goodie bags for patients, he is looking to partner with Bishop’s Concordia Club to make and deliver blankets to City of Hope. One of Concordia’s projects they are involved in every year is providing blankets to pediatric units at Torrance’s hospitals. Mostofi would like to provide blankets to chemotherapy patients.
Others is in His Blood
and Beyond
He is also looking into ways he can help patients find rides to their treatments and to pick up medications at their local pharmacies. “I am always looking for ways to help patients directly,” says Mostofi. “I hear about how some patients sometimes have difficulty getting to their appointments or getting to the pharmacy and there are ways we can alleviate that stress for them.”
This summer, Mostofi took an important step in his goal of becoming a doctor when he spent time shadowing doctors and attending seminars and lectures. He shadowed his father, Dr. Reza Mostofi, to learn about the day-to-day work he does and how he interacts with patients, nurses and other medical staff. He also spent four weeks shadowing Dr. Amir Zangiabodi, a neurologist at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood. He spent time interacting with patients and medical students and his experience was so great that he was hired as a scribe for much of his four weeks. Another highlight of his summer was spending a week at the UC Irvine MedAcademy. He sat in on lectures, participated in labs, learned how to administer an IV, suture a wound and intubate a patient.
“One of the best parts of the MedAcademy was watching how doctors interacted with their patients and how they were caring and careful with their words,” he says.
The next step for Mostofi will be choosing a college to attend after graduation. He is applying to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis and Washington University in St. Louis among others, with his ultimate goal of getting into medical school. “My dream medical schools are UC San Francisco and UCLA,” he says.
In addition to his work with the Cancer Support Club and shadowing doctors, Mostofi is involved in a variety of other activities. He plays soccer for Albion Los Angeles Soccer Club and for BMHS (he was named 1st Team All-Del Rey League Goalkeeper this past season for the Knights), he plays the guitar and is learning the piano, and he will be a Kairos Senior Retreat leader this year. While soccer comes naturally to him since he has been playing his whole life, he admits he is a little nervous about being a retreat leader even though he is looking forward to the opportunity because he had such a great experience on his junior retreat. “I learned so much about my classmates on Emmaus [the junior retreat] and felt a strong connection by just listening to them and being there for them.”
Connecting with his classmates is one of the main reasons why he chose to attend BMHS after attending public schools his whole life. He wanted to find a school where the opportunities to grow and get to know people was a priority. He ultimately chose BMHS because “there is a community feel around Bishop that you don’t get at a big school” and it is a place where he can really get to know more people. That connection with his classmates is some of what makes him a little nervous about being a Kairos leader. “I just want to make sure that it is as great an experience as possible for those on the retreat,” he says. “If I can be an inspiration for people to discover something about themselves, then I will have done my job as a leader.”
What it all comes down to for Mostofi is helping people. He wants to make a difference in the lives of others, so providing service through the Cancer Support Club, being a retreat leader and pursuing a career in medicine comes naturally to him. “I made up my mind at a pretty early age that I wanted to be a doctor,” he says. “I don’t even remember thinking about being anything other than a doctor because I see how much of an impact my parents have in saving lives and the satisfaction they feel in helping their patients and I want to make a difference in the world that way as well.”
Take a Bao
Linda Nguyen '09 is a mentor who inspires others and impacts her community in a positive way.
Immediately upon walking into SACHI.LA, it is apparent why Linda Nguyen ‘09 chose one of her favorite locales to meet for her interview. It is not just a quaint, locally-owned coffee shop in Mar Vista. One look to the right after ordering your drink and a retail shop invites you to browse the vintage clothing, records and hand-crafted jewelry and greeting cards available for sale. The employees are not just interacting with the customers, they are visiting with them. It is more than just a coffee shop; it is part of the community because it welcomes those who enter with an opportunity to explore one's senses. Spend five minutes with Nguyen and it is evident that she is more than just an entrepreneur. Like her favorite coffee shop, there are many layers to Nguyen. In the many career paths she has taken, what is constant is that she is an extraordinary woman who has vowed to make it her life’s work to have a positive impact in her community and in the lives of those all around her.
Nguyen’s life work has, she admits, seemed to change every few years, and in just a short time, she has “lived 20 lives.” She earned three degrees from Loyola Marymount University, including a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice. She worked in the corporate world, in both secondary and higher education, and even helped found a new school - Cristo Rey Orange County High School. While in college, she worked 12 internships, including cold call sales in the music industry, working for a company that sold comfortable dance shoes outside of LA clubs and doing public relations for a lobbying firm. Behind all that she does, Nguyen is always teaching, always mentoring and always learning. “My nature is to pick up things wherever I am, to learn as I go,” she says.
Today, Nguyen is the founder and owner of The Ugly Bao, a company that does more than just hand-make banh baos, a Vietnamese comfort food. She is using all of her experiences to advance her mission to provide career mentorship and development to immigrant and first American-born folks, and really anyone who works for the company. Her employees include young people just starting out getting work experience - including Bishop graduate MacKenzie Hughes ‘24 and current senior Olivia Park ‘25 - and those who already have full-time jobs. She met Hughes and Park during the Spring when she visited campus to speak to students about her career and how following your heart is important in all aspects of life. Her visit was so impactful that it prompted Park to come up with Bishop’s theme for the 2024-25 school year: Follow Your Passion. Whether Nguyen is working with students or those already with aspiring careers, her employees are people who are looking to take the next step in their lives. “I am passionate about helping people develop their skills and helping them advance in their careers,” she says.
That commitment to help others has always been an important part of her life and all of her experiences have led her to the creation of The Ugly Bao. She inherited her entrepreneurial spark from her mother and it was ignited when she was a student at BMHS. And when she speaks about her Bishop roots, her family and her faith, Nguyen’s eyes light up.
After not making the Short Flags team at BMHS, Nguyen did not fret. Instead, she found a way to make an impact. She started her own dance team outside of school and borrowed $2,000 from her mother to produce a dance show and rent a local theater. The show was so successful that Nguyen was able to donate $10,000 to non-profit organizations working to end human trafficking. Nguyen, who describes herself as “freakishly observant,” credits two of her teachers at BMHS with helping shape who she is as an educator, a business owner and an entrepreneur.
“Mr. [Eric] Franklin taught me how to write and think critically and be accountable,” says Nguyen. “He refused to give good grades unless you truly earned it. We all knew that he had high-expectations of us so we were fine with that structure and accountability.”
Anne O’Connor, Nguyen’s Social Justice teacher, is another wellrespected teacher who made a lasting impression. “Ms. O’Connor is a quiet beast,” says Nguyen with a smile. “She was always so gentle, but she held us accountable and she was always paying attention. What I will never forget is how she pushed me to share more in class. She really got me excited about making the world a better place.”
After working in the corporate world right after graduating from LMU with a degree in Business Administration, it looked as though working in education would be the path for Nguyen. “I didn’t love the corporate world because I never saw the sun,” she says. While working on advanced degrees at LMU, Nguyen learned that she loved working with students and soon found herself at Marymount High School as a mid-year hire teaching theology and serving as a retreat coordinator. After a few years, she took a position at the all-girls Notre Dame Academy as a theology teacher and full-time Campus Minister and, through the pandemic, experienced one of her proudest moments as an educator.
When Covid hit, it canceled the Kairos retreat she had been planning for her seniors and it was devastating to everyone involved. For Nguyen, there was only one thing to do: provide a positive experience for the students.
“My goal as a theology teacher was to make theology more interesting for young women and to focus on developing their critical thinking skills,” she says. Through Zoom, Nguyen introduced her seniors to a different retreat experience called Petra. “The goal was to look at what leadership looks like for women by expressing to them that they are the rock of the world,” she says. “I am proud to help them feel connected even though we were apart.”
Even while working in education, the entrepreneur in Nguyen was ready to emerge. As someone who is always looking to improve and grow, she began to ask herself “if I could start a school, how would I do it?” So, Nguyen led a team in starting Cristo Rey Orange County High School. She worked as a feasibility study director and was integral in finding a school site, raising money, developing corporate partnerships, and securing data from surveys conducted with students and community leaders. As the school began to take shape, however,
Bao
Nguyen felt a calling to help people by getting back to her roots, which involved her family and her faith.
When Nguyen speaks about The Ugly Bao, the passion and love in her eyes is unmistakable. That passion stems from her family’s traditions that are an integral part of the company and from her desire to truly impact the lives of others. When she speaks about her parents and how hard they worked to make a better life, Nguyen is fiercely proud of the sacrifices they made to provide. “Food is what broke my family out of poverty,” says Nguyen, “and [The Ugly] bao is my way of acknowledging and honoring my past.”
For Nguyen, The Ugly Bao’s kitchen is a place where she feels comfortable because it takes her back to teaching. The kitchen is a place in every home where families have conversations about their day and what is going on in their lives. It is a place where she can help her employees not only advance the company, but improve their own lives as well. “Around the kitchen is where you talk,” she says. “I love students and my employees feel like my students. I work with many young people in helping them develop skills that will advance their own careers. The kitchen is just another classroom.”
In the short time since Nguyen launched The Ugly Bao, the company has seen great success, but it is not always easy. When things get stressful and busy and difficult, Nguyen leans on her upbringing and her faith to get her through the tough moments. “When I am my most exhausted, something happens to make it make sense,” she says. “I know that God provides and I am blessed that I get to choose what I want to do. I just have to work hard and do right by my employees, customers and stakeholders. I take what I do seriously because of them.”
Like her favorite coffee shop in Mar Vista, the one where The Ugly Bao has occasional pop-ups, Nguyen and her company are a special part of a community. And as she continues to grow the business and the community, she will continue to provide those in her care with an unmatched work ethic, a commitment to integrity and the motivation to follow their passions.
CLASS OF 2024 THANKFUL FOR THEIR TIME AT BISHOP
As the Class of 2024 gathered together on May 31 to celebrate their graduation, a sense of gratitude was present on campus. In commemorating their time at Bishop, members of the class thanked their classmates, their teachers and their families, and that was certainly the tenor of the Valedictory and Salutatory speaches by Nicholas Kenneally '24 & Karol Tran '24, respectively. In addition to thanking all of her classmates for growing with her during their four years, Tran expressed her gratitude to Bishop Montgomery for providing a place where she and her peers feel like family. "Thank you for giving us the opportunities to find community and a place where we belong," said Tran. "Thank you for teaching [us] how to understand that [we are] loved and valuable because [we] come from God. We are graduating today because of you."

Judy Kline Retires After 47 Years at Bishop
It has been 67 years since Bishop Montgomery opened its doors and, in that time, no other person has worked at the school longer than Judy Kline. After 47 years as a teacher and mentor, she announced her retirement. During her time at BMHS, she taught thousands of students, worked with hundreds of colleagues, and witnessed historic advances in technology and in the way students learn. In addition to serving at Bishop for almost five decades, Judy and her husband, David, sent their three daughters to BMHS (Jennifer '91, Amanda '94 and Katie '96) and created a legacy at the school that will last a lifetime.
When looking at her tenure at BMHS, the numbers are staggering. It is estimated that Judy taught over 4,700 students. In Bishop's history, there have been 18,030 graduates and Judy has taught over 25% of all alumni. Since her first year at BMHS in 1977, there have been 13,728 students graduate; it is estimated that she taught 34% of them. There is also little doubt that Judy taught the children of hundreds of former students.
During her tenure at Bishop, Judy taught a variety of classes and witnessed unprecedented growth in education and in the resources available to teachers and students. When she began at Bishop, she taught classes such as Beginning Foods, Home Economics and Personal Typing. Few could have predicted that by the time she retired, students and teachers would be experimenting with artificial intelligence in the classroom. In addition to the above classes,
Judy spent the better part of the last 25 years teaching Computers and English. Her career in the classroom mirrors the changing times in the world. She began her career teaching typing, moved on to teaching students the finer points of Microsoft Word, Excel and other programs and retired helping her students properly and effectively use such tools as Chat GPT.
Upon her retirement, many faculty and staff expressed their gratitude to Judy for her many years of service to the community. "Mrs. Kline’s unwavering love, support, and dedication to the BMHS community for the last 47 years will be forever cherished and appreciated. We love you Judy," says BMHS Vice Principal Yvette Vigon-Morffi '87, who was not only a colleague of Judy's but a former student as well. "One aspect I’ve always admired—and tried to emulate—is how beautifully decorated and cheerful her classroom always was," says longtime colleague and friend Laura Fabbri. "Judy was always a great sport, whether it was participating in faculty talent shows or dressing up for Halloween. Her students undoubtedly appreciated her cheerful spirit as much as we did. I’ll miss her tremendously, but I’m so happy for her."
Five Educators Follow Their Next Path
For five other faculty members, the 2023-24 school year was their last at Bishop Montgomery, but they all had an impact on their students and the school.
Amy Meehan '89 taught a variety of subjects in her 25+ years at BMHS, from English to Theology. After graduating from BMHS and college, she returned to campus as a teacher, coach and mentor to students and colleagues. She heads back to school full-time to pursue a career in the medical profession.
John Sansalone was a fixture in the science department for 22 years and also was the inspiration behind the establishment of the Robo-Knights, BMHS' robotics team. He is moving back to his native Australia.
Melissa Rhoades-Rudder '01 leaves to pursue a career as a freelance copywriter, but her impact on her students and the school will never be forgotten. In her 18 years at BMHS, she taught AP English courses, moderated our drama lab and improv students and served as the very first moderator of the Black Student Union.
(l to r): Eric Hankey, Melissa Rhoades-Rudder '01,
Vincent Nguyen.
Eric Hankey served as Bishop's Music Director for 12 years and helped bring back the TBK brand to BMHS. In addition to his impact on the music program, he also taught a variety of classes, including new courses like music production and AP Seminar. He will be the new music director at Torrance High School.
Vincent Nguyen taught at Bishop for two years in the Theology Department and was well-liked and well-respected by his students and peers. He entered the novitiate of the Jesuits in August.
Knight Fest Brings Community Together
On March 23, Bishop Montgomery's annual Knight Fest brought together faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends for a great night on campus. The night featured beer, wine and whiskey tasting, great food from Chef Jen Story '99, music provided by DJ Eric Gomez, karaoke, and bar games such as shuffleboard, air hockey and cornhole. Thank you to Andy Burschinger '12 of Southern Glazer's for donating great wines and John Arrambide for donating whiskey and to our amazing local breweries: Anheuser-Busch (Damien Bonenfant), Boardroom Brewery (Rick Mathiesen), Burnin' Daylight (Bob Lake), Buzzrock Brewing (Ian Walter), Green Cheek Brewing (Catherine & Dennis Wilson) and Unsung Brewery (Catherine & Dennis Wilson). And special thank you to all our guests who made it an amazing night of fun and fellowship. Join us on April 5, 2025 for our next Knight Fest!
Cultural Affinity Groups Share Experiences Throughout the Year
BMHS has a rich offering of clubs that not only reflect student interests, but also celebrate the diversity of the student body. Each year, students are invited to propose clubs that they would like to have and some of them include cultural affinity groups. Bishop's Asian Pacific Islander Student Association (APISA), Black Student Union (BSU), Filipino Club, Korean Club and Latinx Culture Club are just some of the cultural clubs that meet on a regular basis. These clubs, like all of Bishop's offerings, are open to every student and many of them offer opportunities for all students to celebrate our diversity. The 2023-24 school calendar was filled with fun and educational activities and celebrations.
Some of the highlights of APISA's year included participating in Bishop's Cultural Awareness Week Fashion Show and Food Fair. They also brought in several guest speakers during the year. Linda Nguyen '09, the owner of The Ugly Bao, a company that hand-makes authentic, Vietnamese banh baos. During API Heritage Month in May, they invited Kayla Padilla '19 back to campus to speak to students about her experiences as a Filipina college basketball student-athlete at both Penn and USC. Bishop's Black Student Union had an exciting year as they hosted several events on campus. One of the highlights of the year was hosting speakers and guests for their Divine Nine event.
They welcomed alumni and other guests back to talk about their experiences as members of African American fraternities and sororities. Some of their guests included Brandon Young '91, Detriana Bodden '18, Cierra Bush ‘19 and Dolores Bodden ‘22. BSU also sponsored the Black Excellence Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior who distinguishes themselves as an individual of outstanding character and whose leadership has positively impacted their community. Fiesta Latina, held in October, celebrated the Latin American culture of students, faculty and staff. The event (pictured) included tacos and pastries, a live cumbia orchestra and cumbia and bachata dance lessons from instructors from New Mambo Dance Studio.
Easter is Extra Special Time for Student
At Easter, we rejoice in Jesus’s resurrection. The empty tomb symbolizes that Jesus has overcome sin and death and it is a reminder that with His death and resurrection, he has opened heaven to all of us. During the Easter Vigil Mass at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, BMHS student Weijia Phillips Kong '25 opened his heart to the Catholic faith when he received the sacraments of initiation. Kong is an Amerigo International student who is originally from Shanghai, China.
Kong was initially interested in learning more about Christianity and chose to attend BMHS because of the school's Catholic values and commitment to providing every student opportunities to learn more about Catholicism and themselves. While taking his theology classes, Kong’s interest in Catholicism grew.
“Having Jesus in my life helps give me peace and keeps me calm during difficult times,” he says.
Kong was welcomed into the Catholic faith by a host of friends and teachers who were in attendance at the Mass. Kong’s Confirmation sponsor was his friend and Amerigo classmate, Quang Vinh Tran ‘25. In addition to friends, faculty members Maria Zarro-Anaya and Rick Egan attended the Mass in support of Kong. "I feel blessed to be able to study at Bishop because of all the interesting friends I’ve made from different backgrounds,” he says.
Tsao '24 Makes Impact on Wide Scale
While at BMHS, Mattew Tsao '24 stood out as a student who made helping others one of his top priorities. As a four-year member of the varsity boys' volleyball team, Tsao did more than just help BMHS to four league titles; he was one of the guiding forces behind the team's community service projects. Along with his brother, Andrew '26, he helped organize beach cleanups through Heal the Bay, but his impact on the community goes even deeper.
During the pandemic, he started Align Organization (www.alignworks.org), a non-profit that engages "in purpose driven initiatives that create a material positive impact on society and the environment." Some of Align's primary activities include partnering with food banks to help feed the vulnerable and underserved; providing nutrition and care kits for those in need; and collaborating with local schools to support and empower youth through mentorship.
Additionally, Tsao and Align partner with other non-profits to help those in the community. On the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, Tsao was at USC handing out thousands of blankets to Los Angeles' homeless population.
Tsao, who graduated in May, will be studying Nutritional Science at Cornell University beginning this fall, but he will continue to make helping others a priority in his life. "I enjoy helping those who are in need and who may otherwise not have the same opportunities as I have had," he says.

Luca Perez '24 Receives Congressional Award
This spring, recent graduate Luca Perez '24 was presented with the Congressional Award's Silver Medal in a ceremony on campus in front of family, friends, classmates and special guests. Perez was presented the award - the highest award given to youth civilians - by Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California's 43rd District. Torrance Mayor George Chen made a special appearance and presented Perez with a certificate from the City of Torrance. Joining Waters and Chen were Perez' grandmother, Carmen, parents, Phillip and Konnie, Torrance Councilmember Asam Sheikh, retired Torrance Councilmember Geoff Rizzo '74 and his wife, Donna Stafford-Rizzo '74, BMHS Vice Principal Yvette Vigon-Morffi '87, AP Government teacher Bryan Dopp and Perez' classmates.
The Congressional Award provides opportunities for young people to unleash their potential by achieving personal goals focused on volunteerism, character development, and fitness. Established in 1979 by the United States Congress, the award recognizes initiative, service, and achievement in young people. One of the unique attributes of the award is that it is not earned for past accomplishments. Rather, young people are honored for setting
For Perez, the most impactful part of his program centered around the community and service aspect of his endeavors. He estimates that approximately 75-80% of his time was focused on volunteering in a variety of ways.
Perez, who will attend Santa Clara University and plans to major in either public health, biology or history, three of his many community service opportunities impacted him the most.
One such opportunity he pursued was volunteering at community health fairs throughout the Los Angeles area. Many of these opportunities were through the Venice Family Clinic, a non-profit that provides high quality comprehensive health care to families and individuals who might otherwise go without the care they need. Through his work with the clinic, which merged with South Bay Family Health Care in 2021, Perez volunteered at health fairs in Hawthorne, Gardena and Inglewood by providing educational materials and assistance to those in need.
Another opportunity that impacted Perez was his work teaching martial arts classes to students who are enrolled in continuation schools and to adults in prisons and those suffering from substance abuse. The weekly classes he taught were through LA County's Hapkido Chapter and were held at Torrance's Wilson Park.
A third volunteer opportunity for Perez working as a student ambassador for the County of Los Angeles' Department of Public Health. His volunteerism as an ambassador focused on providing information about health services available to those in need, primarily in the Hispanic-speaking communities in the South Bay. Perez handed out flyers at local events and health fairs and interacted with those in need.
When asked what he learned the most about the entire process of working towards earning the Congressional Award, Perez spoke about how all the volunteer activities gave him a sense of both inspiration and gratification. "What impacted me the most," says Perez, "is seeing the suffering that many people endure in underserved communities and how seeing this inspires me to want to continue to help others."
Wherever his path takes him in college and beyond, Perez is committed to making service to others a priority in his life. He wants to give back as a way to honor the commitment his parents have made to provide him with opportunities to discover his passions. "All of these experiences have made me even more grateful to my parents for the life I have."

DAY OF GIVING
The 2024 Day of Giving on June 6 at BMHS broke the previous record in terms of total amount donated. In the 24 hours of the day, $127,892 was donated to BMHS from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends. One of the highlights of the day was a matching gift challenge from an anonymous donor. If BMHS reached $50,000 in gifts, the school would receive an additional $50,000 from the donor. Thanks to the support of so many members of the community, the matching gift challenge was unlocked, making the Day of Giving an historic day at BMHS. We are thankful for all who made a gift on June 6 and all who made an impact on BMHS and our students.

State Title for Girls' Hoops is Historic
When the final buzzer sounded in the CIF State Division 1 Basketball Final, the girls' basketball team (23-5) celebrated the program's seventh state championship. The win not only capped an amazing season, but it illustrated that BMHS' girls' basketball program is one of the best in state history. With their 52-40 win over Bishop O'Dowd, the program now has the third most state titles in California history behind Brea Olinda (10) and St. Mary's of Stockton (8).
The team started the season out strong and never looked back under second-year head coach and alumna Rheina Ale '08. They captured their seventh straight Del Rey League title and earned a spot in the prestigious CIF-SS Open Division playoffs, one of the most challenging playoff divisions in the country. Despite going 1-2 in the pool play playoff format, the team competed with some of the best teams in the state and the country. When the state playoff brackets were announced, the Knights were rewarded for their demanding schedule with the top seed in Division 1.
In their march to the state title, many players received league, CIF-SS and state accolades. Jordin Blackmon '25 was named Del Rey League MVP, All-CIF, All-State and Daily Breeze Player of the Year. To top it off, she was named Honorable Mention Junior All-American by MaxPreps. Blackmon was joined on the all-league team by Cyriah Coleman '24, Sophia Dignadice '26, Tiara Jones '24, Armanyie Reed '27 and Atiya Watson '25. Jones and Reed also earned All-CIF and All-State honors.
After the state final, Blackmon put things in perspective when talking to reporters. “It’s a little surreal right now,” she said. “I still really can’t believe that we just won state, but to be a part of that legacy is really an honor and I’m really glad that I was able to do it with this group of girls.”

Song Team Shines in Many Ways
They are on the sidlines, in the bleachers and on the fields and courts cheering on the Knights. At halftime and timeouts at games, they are always ready to perform and get the crowds excited. They are at many athletics games and school events, serving as wonderful ambassadors. They are our Song Team and they are an important part of the BMHS community.
Led by our dedicated coaches, Felicia Vann and Kaelyn Jefferson '17, they also compete at local competitions throughout Southern California. Their routines consist of fast-paced choreography that transition through multiple formations creating dynamic visuals and entertaining performances. The Songleaders work very hard perfecting these routines and building up their technical dance skills throughout the season.
This year, these efforts paid off, as the Song Team finished in the top three in their category at every competition. Their most memorable performance was a first place finish at the 2024 Miss
Dance Drill Team USA competition, earning them an invitation to the compete at the National competition. Additionally, two Songleaders represented as solo performers. Kristine Nuruki '24 finished in the top 10 for her solo performance. Oriana Evins '25 competed for the 2024 title of Miss Dance Team USA and finished as 4th runner up and earned an invitation to represent Team USA in Tokyo, Japan.
The Songleaders not only excel academically - the entire team was on the honor roll as scholar-athlete award recipients - but they represent the Knight family with distinction, competing and performing throughout the year. They definitely make everyone proud.
Fifteen Athletic Programs Reach CIF Playoffs
It is not uncommon, year after year, to have many teams and athletes compete for CIF titles. 2023-24 was no different as 15 of Bishop's 20 athletic programs were represented in the CIF-SS playoffs.
In the fall, all six programs reached the playoffs. Football reached the playoffs for the sixth time in the last 10 years. Both boys' and girls' cross country teams qualified for the team CIF prelims. The boys' won the Del Rey League title and were led by Matt Shanahan '24, who won the individual league title and competed in the CIF and state finals. He finished 7th in the CIF-SS Division 4 finals and 16th in the state finals. Mackenzie Wu '27 of the girls' golf team finished 4th at league finals and qualified for the CIF individual tournament. Girls' tennis advanced to the second round of the playoffs and the doubles team of Anna Richeson '24 and Madison James '26 were Del Rey League champions. They qualified for the CIF Doubles Tournament. Girls' Volleyball captured the Del Rey League title for the 2nd year in a row and advanced to the playoffs for the 17th straight season.
and Softball reached the playoffs after a one-year absence. Dylan De Vera '26 (Del Rey League single champion) and Zane Montiel '27 of the boys' tennis team reached the CIF individual tournament. De Vera advanced all the way to the 3rd round. Isabella Tieman '26 finished 8th in the 100 Free at the girls' swimming CIF finals and the boys were well-represented as well. The 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay team of Mathan Lu '25, Jack O'Shaughnessy '24, Thomas Romesser '26 and Eric Zhou '24 reached the CIF-SS finals (both finished 5th).
Girls' Basketball was the only team of the four winter sports to make the playoffs (see left).
Eight spring sports reached the CIF playoffs. Boys' Volleyball and Girls' Beach Volleyball both won league titles and advanced to the playoffs
Re-Writing the Swim Record Books
When Eric Zhou '24 (l) and Jack O'Shaughnessy '24 arrived on campus as freshmen, the boys' swimming record book mostly consisted of BMHS Athletic Hall of Famer Michael Ashe '75 and his accomplishments. Ashe, along with some teammates, held almost every record at the school. By the time they graduated, O'Shaughnessy and Zhou joined Ashe in the conversation as greatest swimmers in BMHS history.
O'Shaughnessy, the 2024 BMHS Male Athleteof-the-Year, put together one of the most impressive athletic careers at BMHS. In his four years, he set Del Rey League records in three individual events (100 Free, 200 Free, 100 Buttlerfly) and two relays (400 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay). He set school records in the 50 Free, 200 Free, 100 Buttlerfly, 100 Backstroke, 200 Individual Medley and was part of school record relays in the 400 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay.
In total, O'Shaughnessy won 15 individual league titles, set five Del Rey League records,
O'Shaughnessy also competed in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke. He won the CIF title in the 200 IM. Zhou competed in the 200 Free and 500 Free at CIF finals, finishing 7th in both races (see more about O'Shaughnessy and Zhou below).
Both the boys' and girls' track teams had impressive seasons as well, as several athletes qualified for CIF-SS prelims and finals.
On the boys' side, the 4x100 relay team of Elijah Aaron '24, Cameron Brewer '25, Ryan D'anjou '25 and Xavier Starnes '25 competed at prelims. High jumper Denis Woods '25 came just short of winning a CIF title, finishing 2nd with a jump of 6'0". For the girls, Kennedy Henderson '26 placed 6th at the CIF-SS Division 4 Finals in the 400m. Henderson and teammates Lana Tennant '24, Madison Smith '26 and Aubrey Walker '26 placed 6th in the 4x400m relay.
won three CIF-SS titles, competed in 13 CIF Finals races and three State Finals races and holds seven school records. To top it off, he earned All-American status as both a junior and senior in the 100 backstroke.
Zhou also cemented himself as one of the best swimmers in BMHS history. Zhou won a CIF title in the 200 Medley Relay as a freshman and was a regular participant at the CIF-SS Finals. He won seven Del Rey League individual titles and competed in seven CIF individual finals races and six relays. He owns the Del Rey League and BMHS record in the 100 Breaststroke and the school record in the 500 Free.
It is safe to say that it may be years before their records are broken, but they have given those that follow something for which to strive.
Mateo Camargo '96, U.S. Marine Corps, was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant.
Dr. Raquel FernandezEscudero ‘97 is a pediatrician with the Torrance Memorial Physician Network. Her practice is located near Torrance Memorial Medical Center. She is blessed to care for many current BMHS students as well as children of many alumni.

Bob was a standout student-athlete while at BMHS. He was a starting forward on the 1967-68 boys' basketball team that captured the CIF title. He returned to campus in 1976 and taught business law, typing and P.E. and served as the Athletic Director for a few years. While his daughter, Erin, was a student at BMHS, Bob and his wife, Judy, were involved in many activities as parents. Erin graduated in 2013. In 2011, Bob was instrumental in BMHS establishing the Athletic Hall of Fame, helping implement criteria and nomination guidelines and he served on the Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee from its inception until his death. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, posthumously, in 2024. "Bob had an unwavering commitment to Bishop Montgomery," says Andy Marafino, BMHS Director of Advancement. "He expressed his love for the school in so many ways and he is greatly missed by so many." He is survived by his daughter, Erin '13 and brother Tom '64
Nancy Piechocki, a longtime employee and parent of four BMHS graduates, passed away on May 23, 2024. Beginning in 1981, Nancy served at Bishop Montgomery for 30 years in a variety of capacities, most notably as an administrative assistant. In addition to serving at BMHS, Nancy served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, St. James Church and Little Company of Mary Hospital.
"Nancy always had a smile on her face whenever anyone went into the main office at Bishop," says Andy Marafino, BMHS Director of Advancement. "She was always there to help and support in any way she could."
Nancy is survived by her children, Gabriele Piechocki-Pierce '77, Jacqueline Piechocki-Siqueiros '78, Dave Piechocki '80 & Maria Piechocki '83. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that gifts be made to the Nancy & Peter Piechocki Memorial Scholarship at BMHS at www.bmhs-la.org/ piechocki/. She was 89.

All Praise to Thee...
Bishop Montgomery is a school, a community and a family. It has been that way since the doors opened in 1957, and that family tradition continues to grow stronger every year.
Of the 197 graduates in the Class of 2023, 31 have at least one parent who is also a BMHS graduate (four have both) and many of them have siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins who graduated from Bishop Montgomery.
Thank you for continuing a wonderful family tradition.

New Beginnings
I read a quote somewhere once that said, “sometimes God allows you to experience everything you thought would satisfy your soul, only for you to see that it doesn’t.” I never really understood what this meant until I had it all…only for me to still feel an unexplainable void in my heart. My relationship with God has always been what you would call surface level. Like anyone else, I’ve had moments of doubt, but I was raised in a religious home, attended church every Sunday, and went to Catholic school my whole life. He was just always kind of there at a distance. For many years, however, I attempted living life on my own terms, pursuing things I thought would finally make me happy without truly leaning on Him. This is where my journey begins. A journey that shows that you can chase all the worldly things this life has to offer and never be satisfied without putting your walk with Christ first.
I look back on the course of my life and one word comes to mind: workaholic. I relentlessly chased the next big job opportunity to grow my career at whatever the cost. The world would eventually reward me in big ways with money, status, connections, and access to people and things I only thought existed in movies. I’ve been a producer and radio personality for radio stations like Radio Disney, Power 106 FM, and Cali 93.9 FM. At 23 years old I was hired to spearhead the growth of Tik Tok in Latin America when it was only a startup back in 2017. Through that, I launched successful social media campaigns for artists like Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Karol G, J Balvin and Daddy Yankee. I’ve interviewed hundreds of artists and actors including Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Bad Bunny, Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. All of this led me to ultimately being awarded 30 Under 30 at 27 years old. You would think that with all this worldly success I would feel on top of the world. I was living the dream after all. Little did the people around me know that behind closed doors, I was battling waves of depression and crippling anxiety. When the lights and cameras turned off and it was time to go home, I would face the inescapable reality that something was missing and no matter how much “success” I would accumulate, I couldn’t fill the void I was feeling in my heart. It wasn’t until a cold morning in December of 2022 that changed my life forever.
I remember this day like it was yesterday. I woke up at 5:45 AM like I normally did to go on a beach run before the sun rose. As I began my run and the cold air hit my lungs, I was overtaken by a force bigger than me. I knew it was God. I wasn’t searching for Him, yet there He was making Himself known to me in the most beautiful way. As I felt His presence, I remember falling to my knees on the sand, crying out and thanking Him. This is when my walk with Christ began.
After having a powerful encounter that day on the beach my life was forever changed. For the first time in my life I actually read the Bible with intention and curiosity. I would attend church to really worship Him and be mentally and emotionally present. I slowly found myself valuing time with my family over time at work. I started listening to different music and consuming different types of content on social media. I felt my heart healing. The things I would numb myself with like success and status slowly started becoming secondary to my relationship with Christ. I felt like I was shedding a version of myself and approaching uncharted territories.
Flash forward to December of 2023, just one year after my walk with Christ began, and I decided to opt for a slower more intentional life. God helped give me the strength to finally leave the rat race and everything I knew behind to travel the country in an RV. I sold my things, purchased a camper, and hit the road solo with just my dog and faith that God was calling me elsewhere.
Of course I am passionate about what I do, but the beautiful part is my self-worth no longer stems from the world and its validation, rather than from Him.
That’s the thing about life. God is constantly giving us opportunities for a fresh new start. The start of a new day, a new week, a new school year, or a new adventure. In the same way, God is also always knocking at our door offering new opportunities to start fresh and build a relationship with Him. No matter what your past is or how much guilt you’re carrying, He is always there ready to forgive and heal your heart. Of all the things I can say I’m proud of, nothing will ever come close to the feeling of knowing that I decided to pursue God and I have Him on my side.
