Welcome to the new and comprehensive issue of the Caribbean meetings and incentives guide. We hope you will find this guide useful when it comes to choosing the right hotel and destination for a truly unique meeting or conference event, or the ultimate incentive. The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) represents over 30 nations across the region and this guide showcases the very best of our conference and meetings facilities for those who want to work hard and play hard in one of the world’s most beautiful regions. As well as stand alone conference centres we have an extensive choice of facilities within many of the Caribbean hotels all equipped with the latest high‐tech facilities, making it very easy to concentrate events in one place. We also offer the additional benefit that our multi‐cultural Caribbean region is home to English, Spanish, French and Dutch‐speaking destinations, making it easy to arrange your event and to address any cross cultural or linguistic needs that may arise. Many of the Caribbean destinations, boast a wide choice of business hotels, but they also offer smaller, individual properties as well, which may allow you to book them

exclusively for your event. Whichever option you choose you will be guaranteed excellent service and the assurance that your goals are met and you host an event to remember.

But we also offer so much more, with our rich culture and history, fabulous food and amazing landscape and interiors, as well as a wide range of activities. There is something guaranteed to appeal to everyone whatever their interests.

The Caribbean is also very easy to get to; a major consideration when you are booking large groups. Many of our destinations are served by regular direct flights from the UK and there is a good network of regional flights and also ferry routes, to support lesser accessible or known destinations.

Getting Down to Business

The Caribbean not only offers captivating islands for leisure pursuits, it also provides a host of excellent facilities for business travel and corporate gatherings. This region can be easily reached from North and South America, Europe and Africa. There are numerous direct flights, enabling business delegates from around the world to easily jet in for events. Some islands can be reached by regional flights and, in some cases, ferry routes. Most of the islands have their own currencies, but accept US Dollars – prices are regularly quoted in this currency. The Caribbean islands are famous for their relaxed way of life, but their charm and welcoming nature also encourage many international business seminars, meetings and incentives trips. With glamorous tropical backdrops, the islands provide first‐class hotels, excellent infrastructure and modern conferencing facilities. The largest

of these facilities are concentrated on the islands of The Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, Martinique and Puerto Rico. Some conference centres are attached to well‐established hotels, thus making it easy to manage business events and delegate accommodation in one place. Alternatively, smaller business gatherings can be fully hosted at boutique hotels or on tiny, remote island resorts. Whether the occasion is a large conference for international business leaders, a series of commercial meetings and seminars, or a small group on a corporate incentive trip, the Caribbean has an excellent reputation of being the destination for such events. Business delegates will also be rewarded with outstanding opportunities for relaxation and leisure activities to round off their trip, including tropical beaches, golf courses, restaurants and casinos.

4

The Caribbean is a diverse region, and much of the different destinations’ heritage influences their culture and way of life today. For French flair, sophisticated hotels, upmarket restaurants and designer boutiques, the French‐speaking islands of Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique and Saint Martin offer the best of France within a tropical landscape. The colonial history of the Spanish Caribbean lives today through the islands’ architecture, language, music and dance. These islands include Belize, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Dutch‐speaking islands of the Caribbean are unique in their Dutch heritage combined with modern American culture. The islands of St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, Bonaire and Curacao offer casino resorts, tropical beaches, excellent diving opportunities and distinctive Dutch‐style architecture to visitors. St Maarten, shared with French territory Saint Martin, is the smallest island in the world.

The Caribbean’s diversity extends to the English‐speaking islands; the largest group in the Caribbean ‐ they stretch from the Gulf of Mexico down to the northern coast of Venezuela. These islands have had links with Great Britain for hundreds of years, and include the British and US Virgin Islands, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Jamaica. Some islands, including Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Montserrat, are still British Overseas Territories, and will offer an air of familiarity to British travellers. Islands in the north of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islands can be reached by direct flights from the UK. The Bahamas, an archipelago of islands just off the coast of Florida, offer sophisticated casino resorts on Nassau and Grand Bahama Island, while Jamaica’s rugged interior provides many adventure and outdoor activities for business delegates in pursuit of action away from the conference room. English‐speaking islands in the east of the Caribbean include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and the US Virgin Islands. Anguilla’s superb beaches provide a breathtaking backdrop to any business event held at its luxury hotels and villas. The island is also known as a gourmet’s paradise, and offers many excellent restaurants for business gatherings. With its rainforest landscape, pretty capital St George’s and local spice markets, Grenada offers travellers a truly authentic Caribbean experience. The island’s hotels, in unspoilt surroundings, provide a range of excellent meeting facilities and modern communication infrastructure for business events. Other English‐speaking Caribbean islands include Trinidad and Tobago. These sister islands are vastly different to each other, but combined offer a perfect destination for business. Trinidad’s capital Port of Spain is a commercial centre with large, modern hotels. Tobago is rustic, but the more picturesque island of the two and perfect for smaller groups. The island of Bermuda has a British‐based culture perfect for hosting business events. The pink sandy beaches, world‐renowned golf courses, plush hotels and spas also offer an idyllic way for delegates to unwind after conferences and meetings. With so much to offer – warm hospitality, first‐class conference and hotel facilities, tropical resorts, sporting activities and more – it’s time to consider the Caribbean for a successful business event.

From July – August, Antigua hosts its annual Carnival, a ten day summer festival where masqueraders in colourful costumes parade through the streets in the capital city of St. John’s. Sport fishing tournaments, triathlons, literary festivals and outdoor food fairs are other great events visitors can experience in Antigua and Barbuda, throughout the year.

Passport and Visa United Kingdom citizens do not require a visa to enter Antigua and Barbuda on holiday or business.

Getting Here With over 10 scheduled flights a week, Antigua is easily accessible and visitors can fly direct to the destination any day of the week. Flights are operated by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic from London Gatwick.

Climate Antigua and Barbuda is a year round destination with a remarkably consistent climate throughout the year, with temperatures between 21–27 Celsius, and a plus for being one of the Caribbean islands with the least rainfall.

The 16 main Islands of The Bahamas all offer exciting experiences and excellent facilities. The core ‘business end’ of a meeting or incentive is easily put together, see our ‘Top Ten Reasons’ below, but it is perhaps the fun ‘extras’ that set The Bahamas apart. Activities for the down time are limited only by one’s imagination. High adrenalin powerboat adventures or shark dives, dolphin and sea lion encounters, a Segway ride or underwater personal submersible vie with a private island away‐day, tall ship sailing or the full on, music and dance rhythms of a Junkanoo ‘rush’ out, to be the highlight of a group’s itinerary.

Barbados, the most easterly of the Caribbean islands and not more than a tiny dot on most world maps, carries an area 166 square miles and a population of approximately 275,000. An awe‐inspiring coastline, perfect temperatures and the friendliest people in the world makes the affectation “The Gem of the Caribbean Sea” as appropriate as Barbados being the perfect choice for any corporate incentive group. Without question, it is an island of contrasts – sleek and modern in many ways, yet clearly still bound to the customs, traditions and religious influences of England. Barbados accommodates the pace and energy of a vibrant commercial life, yet embraces a

rhythm that feels slower and less aggressive. It is a country as complex and diverse as any you will find. The newcomer to Barbados has an ally – its size. It measures a brief 21 miles from top to bottom and only 14 miles wide. In Barbados, life is not concealed within climate controlled skyscrapers. It is a tropical isle, within an openness born of the physical reality of constant breezes, a salubrious breeze and almost certain sunshine. Sophisticated, savvy but still every ounce a Caribbean tropical paradise, Barbados is undoubtedly the perfect choice to meet and exceed the demanding needs of the corporate, incentive group and business meeting industries. With more than 6000 rooms, Barbados offers a diverse selection of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. Incentive quality hotels include properties such as the

19

Accra Beach Resort, Elegant Hotels encompassing Colony Club, Tamarind Cove, The House & Turtle Beach, Fairmont Royal Pavilion and the Hilton Hotel to mention a few. There is also a wealth of independent, moderately priced hotels which can be used for individual guests pre or post group programmes. Barbados is fortunate to have a few full service destination management companies which provide excellent services. Their in‐depth knowledge of the destination, many years of experience in organising group programmes and their creativity are the key benefits when working with a Barbados Destination Management Company. These professional companies specialise in the logistics, planning and execution of incentives, meetings and customised events. They offer a comprehensive range of services and products that are essential for the creation of successful

incentive programmes, corporate meetings, exhibitions and special events of any size. Available services include hotel recommendations, concept and design, project management, production, graphics and décor, unique entertainment, themed on and off property functions, installation and dismantling and of course transport. With amazing diversity and infrastructure, Barbados offers a wide array of group options to satisfy even the most discriminating clientele. Full group activities range from private luxury catamaran cruises to exclusive jeep safaris, private villa getaways to a unique unforgettable island adventure. Barbados is perfect for companies looking for a really fascinating team building exercise, an exercise in creativity, a test of how independent minded people, leaders and decision makers in their own fields of endeavour. Barbados offers a taste of everything – wacky road rallies, beach Olympics Bajan style, challenging brain teasers, or even walks across fire. If something more low‐keyed but equally exciting appeals,

then optional and individual activities are the ideal way to give guests a taste of some of what Barbados has to offer. Whether it’s soaring above the tree tops, plunging to the depths of the ocean in a submarine, marveling at an exquisite array of flora and fauna in an underwater marine park, exploring the subterranean wonder of Harrison’s Cave or battling a 150lb blue marlin on a fishing charter Barbados has it all. Local beaches also abound and can offer quiet seclusion for a laid back lunch on the sand or they can be the base for watersport activities for even the most timid of guests, scuba diving in the aqua waters, to skimming above the clouds on a parasail. The powder white beaches are some of the best in the world, strongly reaffirming guests’ fantasy of what paradise really is. With unique venues and locations to meet every group’s needs and budget, Barbados promises to be one of the most unforgettable incentive destinations worldwide.

Bermuda is a dream destination that blends Old World charm (it’s the oldest British colony) with sunny pleasures and a decidedly professional commitment to business. Bermuda packs a lot of perfection into a small space. The main island is just 21 miles long and no more than 1.25 miles across at its widest point. Unlike many destinations, Bermuda is a place that works well for groups year‐ round. Its mild semitropical climate keeps the average temperatures between 68 and 84 degrees, and there are only two seasons: the “Golf and Spa” season, which runs from November through March, and the “Beach and Sizzle” season, which lasts from April through October.

Venues & Activities Whether it’s culture, history or active adventures, Bermuda offers an extensive range of group activities — whether it’s scuba diving among more wreck dives here than anywhere in the world, golfing on championship courses with breath taking views, or visiting acclaimed local museums and historic sites. A year‐long calendar of events which includes golf tournaments, sailing regattas and festivals which provides additional, ready‐made group functions that add even more value to the visit. Bermuda’s diverse venues work well for both group outings as well as private events; among the noteworthy choices are the Bermuda Aquarium, Dolphin Quest Bermuda, historic Fort St. Catherine, the Crystal Caves of Bermuda and five public parks that can be used for private functions. The Bermuda experience is all about quality, and Bermuda offers your

business award‐winning accommoda‐ tions and venues as well as dedicated and personalized service. You will soon discover why Bermuda will be the one destination your group will never forget. effort. Choose from a variety of on and off‐site dining and catering venues that will delight the palate and stimulate your senses.

Contact: Grenada Tourism Authority Telephone: 0208 8328 0644 Website: www.grenadagrenadines.com

The Caribbean island of Grenada, known as the Spice Isle, is a tropical paradise that makes the perfect incentive, or small meeting getaway, covered in vibrant rainforest and spice plantations, surrounded by cerulean waters teeming with marine wildlife. The fragrant spices ‐ including nutmeg, mace and cinnamon – blend with the scents of exotic blooms on the gentle sea breezes that once powered the island’s nutmeg economy and legend has it that a stick pushed in the ground will flourish in Grenada. Let Grenada help you inspire your staff and client’s to build better business relationships. And Grenada’s Destination Management Companies offer a personal service that guarantees satisfaction, with a smile.

Grenada embraces visitors with a warm welcome to its boutique hotels. Most properties are owned and managed by local families and as no beachfront building can be taller than the tallest palm tree, the island’s natural charm is retained. Renowned for its reef and wreck dives and jaunty regattas as much as its spice and cocoa plantations, Grenada boasts exciting music festivals, exuberant carnivals and notable restaurants. In addition to several rum distilleries including Westerhall and the water‐ powered River Antoine, Grenada is home to one of the world’s leading organic chocolate producers, Grenada Chocolate. Staffed by islanders and using only locally‐grown cocoa from co‐operative farms, the factory creates award‐winning chocolate. In 2012, in partnership with neighbouring agro‐

42

tourism attraction Belmont Estate, a new four‐hour chocolate tour launched to enable visitors to meet growers, harvest cocoa and see the process from bean to bar, including visiting the factory and tasting the goods! So, what else makes Grenada – and her sisters islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique ‐ so different from the other islands of the Caribbean and the perfect incentive destination? Some say it’s the celebratory culture that warmly embraces visitors when they arrive and the feeling of safety on the streets: each Friday in Gouyave, taste freshly‐caught fish and other delicacies, accompanied by live, local music – or explore the Spice Market in the capital St George’s where farmers offer home‐made jams and jellies and their own spices for sale.

Under the water, Grenada offers attractions for all levels of experience, from beginner to advanced. Lazy drift dives or adventure diving, the pristine waters of Grenada teem with sea life including sharks, manta rays, tropical fish and varied types of coral. Most dive sites are located within 15‐20 minutes of the shore, enabling divers to enjoy two or three dives a day. Known as the ‘Wreck Diving Capital of the Caribbean’, the island offers more wrecks than any other Caribbean island and is home to the Bianca C ‐ the largest and most famous wreck in the Caribbean. If diving isn’t on the agenda, try snorkelling over the world’s first Underwater Sculpture Park – an eerie collection of life‐sized statues created as an artificial habitat by artist Jason de Caires Taylor and now very much in Mother Nature’s hands. Welcome to Martinique!

Martinique is a small island and a seductive little corner of France, which combines all the elements of stylish French savoir‐faire with a sensuous and fun‐loving Creole joie de vivre. Blessed with lovely Caribbean beaches, its landscapes loom large in their majesty and variety. The north is a rugged, mountainous region whose highest point is Mount Pelée, an active volcano that stands at 1397m. Just to the south is a range called the Pitons du Carbet, whose peaks reach an impressive 1197m. All these mountains are swathed in rainforest, dense tangles of oversized trees, creepers and bracken fern cut through by brooks, springs, and waterfalls. The

north also boasts beaches with sand that’s silver or bluish‐grey, a sign of their volcanic origins. The centre of the island is dominated by an alluvial plain. It’s in the centre that you will find Martinique’s largest costal swamps of mangrove trees. The roots of these trees aren’t underground, but out in the open air, arching over the swamp waters. That’s why mangrove swamps are sometimes called “forests taking a foot bath.”

importing slaves from Africa to work in the fields. Thus began the “triangular trade.” Slavery in Martinique was finally abolished by the French government in 1848. The next historic milestone was the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée, which destroyed the town of St Pierre, the island capital at the time, and killed almost all the town’s 30 000 inhabitants.

The south has lots of rocky hills called mornes, as well as intricate patterns of valleys and ord‐like coves. The southern coast is graced with idyllic white sand beaches and striking rocky promontories.

The island has been marked by multiple influences and cultural mixing; its eventful past is evidenced by its architecture, historic monuments and museums. Throughout the year, there are many events where one can participate in vibrant traditions and experience the warmth, creativity and hospitality of local people.

In 1635, the island became a possession of the French, who oversaw the development of sugarcane, pineapple and banana plantations. With these plantations came the need for manpower, so the French resorted to

In Martinique you will find two types of cuisine. France gave Martinique a tradition of bread, cheese and charcuterie but you will also find a creole cuisine based on local ingredients such as papaya gratin, codfish fritters…

Martinique is a French overseas department and many Martinican chefs have studied or worked in France before returning to the island to adapt the recipes and technique to the Creole palate. Along with great food, Martinique produces great rum. Just as wine lovers regularly visit France to savour the best wine, rum connoisseurs are increasingly making their way to Martinique to experience some of the world’s finest and most distinctive rums. Martinique is known for its epicurean delights, premium rum and beautiful beaches, but straying from the beaten path allows you to experience the island as locals do. Take l’Ilet Oscar, a secluded and largely deserted islet off the east coast of Martinique. It’s home to La Maison de l’Ilet Oscar and not much else. You can swim, sunbathe and dine on tropical combinations of fresh fish and fruits. Legend has it that Napoleon’s Creole bride bathed in Josephine’s Tub, not far from l’Ilet Oscar, which is how this pool got its name.

Welcome to Montserrat

Contact: Montserrat Tourist Board Telephone: +1 664 491 2230 or 8730 Website: www.visitmontserrat.com

Montserrat is considered a haven for nature seekers; this is not surprising with its lush mountain scape, world class hiking trails, pristine dive sites and active Soufriere Hills Volcano. The island breeze and warmth of its people will make you feel genuinely at home on this picturesque gem which is only a short 15‐minute flight or a ferry ride from Antigua. The island is known fondly as the Emerald Isle due to its rolling hills, greenery and the fact that it has ties with Ireland, in the form of place names, surnames and similarities in culture. It is the only island outside of Ireland where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday. A weeklong celebration highlighting Montserrat’s local culture

and Irish heritage culminates with St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, also a commemoration of the planned slave uprising on that very day in 1768. The activities range from freedom hike, freedom run, exhibitions, lectures, church service, dinner, pub crawl; and on St. Patrick’s Day itself a traditional “Slave Feast” which is housed in a recreated slave village. This is a truly festive atmosphere with traditional foods, local entertainment and the wearing of green and white. In addition to this event are many other activities that take place throughout the year such as the Calabash Festival in July, Cudjoe Head Day Celebrations in August, Literary Festival in October/November, the Volcano Half Marathon in November and the Year End Festival in December. Montserrat celebrated fifty (50) years of festival from December 14 2012 to January 2 2013. This event saw a large number of returning residents and first time visitors to the island who participated in the many activities.

64

A visit to the island today will reveal a new beginning following the many disruptions caused by the volcano. Commerce is now centred in Brades in the northern part of the island. Businesses and homes are being built almost non‐stop. The road network has been improved with ghaut replacements, underground cable ducting, pedestrian walkway extensions, and resurfacing of main roads. Just recently, the Government of Montserrat has started a project to search for geothermal energy. A concept for a new town which includes Port Facilities at Carrs Bay, construction of a hotel and a business/residential centre around Little Bay has been finalised and will be built in phases. Montserrat has a good mix of Conference and Meeting rooms ranging from small spaces, found at different locations around the island accommodating 15 people or less, to medium sized rooms as at the Cultural

Centre, which can accommodate up to 500 people depending on layout. Rooms are generally equipped with AC and use of equipment including chairs, PA system, podium, microphones, and WIFI. Full Catering service for coffee breaks can also be arranged as part of the packages offered. The Centre itself has other smaller meeting rooms that are also fully equipped for conferences/ meetings. Accommodations are available to suit all tastes and budget. There is a selection of well‐appointed villas to choose from with swimming pools, and all with stunning views. There is also a hotel and a number of apartments, bed and breakfasts and guest houses available for rental. Taxis and rental vehicles are also available for rent. In terms of Incentives, some accommodations provide airport pick up and drop off as well as group rates. They also arrange snorkelling, diving, hiking, bird watching, horseback riding, boat tours, turtle watching and volcano viewing excursions for groups. Additionally, a number of ground handlers can arrange many of the above activities. The written history of Nevis begins with the account recorded by Columbus when he sailed by Nevis in 1493. The name Nevis is derived from “Nuestra Senora de Las Nieves” which means “Our Lady of the Snows,” because of the cloud capped mountain reminding Columbus of snow. Prior to the Columbus saga, Nevis was named Dulcina “Sweet Island” by the Arawaks and later Oualie “land of beautiful waters” by the Caribs. Later in the 18th century Nevis became known as “Queen of the Caribees.” Evidence of pre‐ceramic people includes finely crafted stone tools and intricately coloured pottery found at various sites across the island. Over the years Nevis has made a number of significant contributions to the Caribbean and the World. Two men who

played part in international history were Alexander Hamilton and Lord Horatio Nelson. Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States and its first Secretary of the Treasury was born on Nevis on January 11, 1757. Nelson, Britain’s most famous admiral, used Nevis as a base of operations in the mid 1780s and married a Nevisian; Frances Nisbet in 1787. Nevis continued to be part of the British colonial holdings until 1967 when it achieved Associated Statehood with St. Kitts. On September 19, 1983 Nevis became part of an independent nation and formed part of the sovereign democratic state of St.Christopher and Nevis. At the Four Seasons, the near‐perfect Nevisian climate makes the lawns, gardens and beaches available virtually every day of the year. Indoors, 465 square metres (5,000 square feet) of luxurious space flows naturally into more than 279 square metres (3,000 square feet) of covered garden terraces overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

A unique combination of world‐class properties, sophisticated infrastructure, exotic Caribbean setting and a state‐of‐ the‐art Convention Center makes Puerto Rico an outstanding destination for meetings and incentive groups, conventions, trade shows and exhibitions. With meetings and conventions comprising nearly one‐third of the Island’s tourism revenue, Puerto Rico’s hospitality and meetings industry takes group business seriously. In recent years, significant hotel construction and property renovations have taken place across the island. In addition to a folio of top hotel brands such as Hilton, Sheraton, Marriott, Inter‐Continental, Meliá, Waldorf‐Astoria and more. Puerto

Rico has added significantly to its luxury offerings with the addition of the St. Regis, W Retreat and Ritz Reserve brands. Presently, Puerto Rico offers 14,000 rooms island‐wide ranging from economy to luxury accommodations suitable for any group size or budget and 1.3 million square feet of state‐of‐ the‐art conference and business facilities for groups of nearly every size. Meeting space options range from intimate board rooms for small groups to the largest ballroom in the Caribbean and can be found in hotel and resorts in the San Juan metropolitan area as well as high‐ end resorts which are located on some of the Island’s most magnificent beaches. The premier meeting facility on the island is the Puerto Rico Convention Center Pedro Rosselló. The largest convention center in the Caribbean and the most technologically advanced

68

facility in the Caribbean and Latin America, the Center creates a singular destination for conventions, trade shows, consumer shows and congresses, and places Puerto Rico at the forefront of meeting and exhibition destinations. Not only is the meeting and convention facility state‐of‐the‐art in size and the services, but also in its dynamic architecture and design, which includes a dramatic wave‐like roof line and a 13‐ story glass curtain opening up to spectacular views of the San Juan harbour and area beaches. The Convention Center incorporates the quality, standards, and materials expected from a full‐service world‐class convention facility. Its size compares favourably with the largest facilities in the hemisphere. There are almost 580,000 square feet/53,882 square metres of overall gross space, including 152,700 square feet/14,186 square metres of exhibition space; 39,000 square feet/3,670 square metres of

ballroom, the largest in the Caribbean; an additional 36,200 square feet/3,363 square metres of meeting rooms; and some 200,000 square feet/18,580 square metres of pre‐function areas and support space. Technology highlights include sat programmable lighting controls, integrated fibre optic and Internet connectivity and an integrated audio system with capability for remote recording of programmes. Part of the entire waterfront development project Bahia Urbana, the Puerto Rico Convention Center District, upon completion, will enable visitors to experience the distinctiveness of Puerto Rico in what will become one of the Island’s most sought‐after spots for business, shopping, recreation and entertainment to include hotels, restaurants, movie theatres, and other amenities. Currently, the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino serves as the headquarter hotel for the Center, providing 503 guestrooms for delegates in a modern, ‘urban oasis’‐like setting. The first convention hotel in the Caribbean built under LEED‐certified guidelines, the property features 35,000

square feet/3,251 square metres of state‐ of‐the‐art flexible meeting space in a conference center setting. The District is minutes away from historic Old San Juan, the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, and the Condado tourist area. Beyond the boardroom, Puerto Rico’s famed beaches, tropical landscape, rich cultural heritage, easy access from many international airports have helped the island earn the reputation as the Preferred Meeting Destination of the Americas. Exciting daytime delegate pursuits include eco‐adventures and water sports, walking tours and hikes, championship golf and resort spa activities. Old San Juan, the oldest walled city in the Caribbean, offers visitors over 500 years of Spanish cultural heritage along cobblestoned streets, colonial buildings, grand fortresses, and historic sites. Many of the Island’s attractions can serve as a stunning venue for a special off‐site function or theme event – a pirate party, an El Yunque rainforest party or a jíbaro party, complete with native foods and dance. Private functions at island restaurants, historic haciendas, or other

69

dramatic off‐site venues include the El Yunque rainforest, Antiguo Casino or the Bacardi Rum Factory. The award‐winning Puerto Rico Convention Bureau is committed to smooth meetings and serves as a liaison to close to 300 member‐suppliers to assist planners with hotel proposals, site selection, promotional materials, special events, on‐site convention staff and more. By utilising the services of the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau, meeting planners can take advantage of the Bureau’s “one‐stop shopping” approach when planning a group meeting or conference, all at no charge. The locals refer to this 11.8 square‐mile island in the Dutch Caribbean as Statia. Though small, the island reveals a surprisingly rich past to travellers. During the 1700s, Statia’s capital, Oranjestad, was a trading hub for slaves, sugar, cotton and commodities from Europe and the Far East. At its peak, the island’s population reached 18,000, and Oranjestad was perhaps the richest port in all the region. However, in 1776 the government brought the wrath of England upon the tiny nation after recognising the newly independent United States by firing an 11‐gun salute to a passing warship. The decline began, and today the sleepy island has approximitely 4,000 inhabitants.

70

More than 100 sunken trading ships off the shores of Statia make this a diving mecca; submerged anchors, cannons and pottery shards create a silent testimony to the island’s story. However there are things to do above the water too: visitors can take a half‐ day hike to the (600m) 2,000 foot Quill, a classically shaped volcano with a forest‐filled crater. Orchids, fruit trees and ferns thrive in this unique environment.

Airport/Gateways/ Flying Time: Airport: Franklin Delano Roosevelt Airport (EUX). Gateways/Flying Time: There are no direct flights from the UK, however

In Oranjestad, there are quaint and noteworthy buildings to visit: Fort Oranje, which was built by the French in 1629, will appeal to history buffs; the Dutch Reformed Church, has a tall tower that offers a bird’s‐eye view of town, and the St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum is filled with relics from both the pre‐Columbian period, and the colonial period. These items are especially interesting since Statia changed hands between the French, Dutch and English a whopping 22 times. You’ll find, among countless other items, colonial furniture, nautical instruments and blue glass trading beads made by the Dutch West Indian Company. Accommodations are in the form of small inns and guesthouses. Dining is also a low‐key affair, with seafood, Creole and Dutch dishes available at several informal restaurants. www.statiatourism.com/where_to_ eat.htm

From bringing together the most powerful leaders in the Western Hemisphere, to hosting the Commonwealth family of nations and British royalty, Trinidad and Tobago is reinventing the business of meetings in the Caribbean, delivering value and memorable experiences. The Trinidad & Tobago Convention Bureau is a one‐stop shop for meeting planners seeking independent information and assistance on hosting events in the Caribbean’s culture capital. Providing unbiased and professional advice and support, the Convention Bureau acts as a liaison between meeting planners and hotels, tour operators, and its database of reputable suppliers. Some of the major services offered by the Bureau include welcome kits for delegates, information and

quotations from vendors, tours and spouse programmes, and conference publicity and delegate boosting.

companies, a range of restaurants and duty‐free shopping on arrival and departure.

Trinidad’s modern Piarco International Airport, one of the largest in the Caribbean, was recognised by the World Travel Awards as the Best Airport in the region in 2007. The facility boasts a number of services for the discerning business traveller, including free WI‐FI internet access, 24‐hour taxi service, an executive jet centre, 13 car rental

83

For conference‐delegates the Hyatt Regency Trinidad is a welcome addition to the destination’s room stock with state‐of‐the‐art meeting facilities. It boasts 428 first‐class rooms and approximately 43,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, which includes a 16,000‐square‐foot Grand Ballroom, a 10,000‐square‐foot multipurpose facility, a full‐service restaurant, a lobby bar and lounge, a rooftop pool, and a 6,000‐ square‐foot spa and fitness centre. The Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre has completely refurbished its 418 rooms, along with the addition of a brand new 24‐hour Business Centre and Executive Lounge. Its facilities have been expanded to include 40,200 square feet of meeting space. Just a few minutes away is the luxurious Carlton Savannah,

the latest addition to the city’s accommodation stock, and there also exists a wide range of smaller, more intimate properties and charming boutique hotels. The newly reopened Magdalena Grand Beach Resort in the tranquil sister isle of Tobago offers over 5500 square feet of meeting space, and 178 deluxe ocean front king and double‐double rooms plus 22 one and two bedroom suites with private Jacuzzis, all with breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean.

Mixing business with pleasure Post‐business entertainment and attractions abound, with museums, historic sites, exciting nightlife fantastic shopping, and thrilling eco‐experiences located within close range of the capital city. By virtue of its ethnic mosaic, Trinidad & Tobago hosts a range of colourful festivals throughout the year.

Trinidad is home to the largest pre‐ Lenten Carnival in the Caribbean, and also to the Hindu festival of Divali, the largest celebration of its kind outside India. Emancipation Day celebrations also occur over a two‐week period in August and reflect the African influence on Trinidad and Tobago. Both islands have a reputation for sumptuous, mouth‐watering culinary fare, with the flavours of India, Africa, China, Syria and Europe combining to create a taste that is unique and representative of the country’s ethnic diversity. To surpass the expectations and delight the senses of delegates, the Convention Bureau can tailor activities to create the perfect pre and post event package, from beach outings where participants sample local street cuisine, to rum tours at the famous Angostura distillery where visitors are immersed in the history of the world renowned Angostura Bitters and intoxicating spirits. Recent tours facilitated by the Bureau included a musical experience where delegates learned to play the steel pan, Trinidad and Tobago’s national

84

instrument, and an eco adventure deep in a tropical rainforest at the internationally recognised Asa Wright Nature Centre for bird watching and conservation.

Corporate Retreats Tobago, Trinidad’s sister island, is just a 25‐minute flight away and is the quintessential Caribbean hideaway with secluded beaches, charming boutique hotels, and award‐winning eco tourism experiences. A perfect escape for corporate retreats, incentives or pre‐and post‐travel itineraries, on this pristine island, one will find eco‐resorts and elegant villas, beautiful beaches and colourful reefs. Tobago is also home to the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, and numerous forts and historical sites reminiscent of the island’s history.
