PHOTOGRAPHY IN MEXICO From the Collection of SFMOMA Supported by Gary & Nancy Sampson Throughout the year, Bakersfield Museum of Art instructors travel across Kern County providing art education to children of all ages. Each group of students provides a new perspective. This exhibition highlights some of these young artists from both on-site and outreach programs during the 2014 year. Exhibited work, selected by Museum instructors, was produced during class time and will highlight the importance of art education as an integral part of childhood development. PHOTOGRAPHY IN MEXICO From the Collection of SFMOMA
Photography in Mexico explores a century of photography in Mexico beginning with works from the medium’s first artistic flowering in the wake of the Mexican Revolution (1910-20) and culminating with contemporary considerations of the US/Mexico border region. The featured images reveal a distinctively rich and diverse tradition of photography in Mexico, ranging from the explosion of the illustrated press at midcentury to the intense documentary investigations of cultural traditions, indigenous groups, and urban politics of the 1970s and ‘80s. A selection rather than a comprehensive survey, these photographs are drawn from SFMOMA’s photography collection and highlight a recent major gift from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser.
FACE TO FACE: 30 YEARS OF PORTRAITURE Presented by The Dolores F. and Victor S. Cerro Endowment for Art Exhibits Supported by Chevron
The depiction of the human face has long been a focus of artists from Renaissance portraits to the work of contemporary makers. Faces convey emotion, provide comfort, suggest beauty, provoke social connections, and show identity. Face To Face features the work of 17 different artists who use paint, graphite, or conté crayon to depict the many characteristics of a person. This exhibition highlights not only the varied subjects, but also the artists’ ability to capture the visual essence of an individual. Based on responses to the question, “Why is art important in our community?”, twelve Kern County residents were selected to participate in a community based exhibition. The selected individuals were permitted access to the Bakersfield Museum of Art’s permanent collection and were invited to select one piece of their choosing. The Bakersfield Museum of Art has a collection consisting of over 300 pieces and takes great pride in highlighting these beautiful works to the community throughout the year. This participatory project features a sampling of these pieces for a one of a kind community selected exhibition.
