EDITOR'S MESSAGE:
Last month a spiralling conflict between two ideologies claimed yet another group of innocent victims. These weren’t combatants on a battlefield, but kids and families trying to leave a pop concert. While many are still trying to comprehend the pure senselessness of the actions in Manchester, one flicker of hope did emerge from the carnage. The population of the city came together to offer comfort and support to the victims of this atrocity, providing shelter, solace food and transport home. It perfectly demonstrates the human trait of reaching out to the vulnerable when they need it most. We find ourselves in a bewildering situation. A war without borders or feasible end. But by showing compassion and understanding to those around us we can fight back. Standing together means supporting each other, not just sharing rhetoric on Facebook. A kind word or action might not be as devastating as a bomb, but it’ll do far more to change people’s minds.

Brighton Naked Bike Ride 2017 Sun 11 June
wiki.worldnakedbikeride.org
Join us for a naked ‘protestival’ ride through our beautiful city — followed by a refreshing sea swim and beachfront afterparty at Volks on Brighton seafront! Every year since 2006, Brighton has joined World Naked Bike Rides around the globe to celebrate cycling and freedom of the human body. The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture and the many dangers it poses to us every day. Brighton's 12th World Naked Bike Ride will take place on Sun 11 June 2017. Up to 1,000 riders have taken part in previous peak years, with more and more people taking part each year. Don’t forget: full nudity is absolutely permitted at the event. This is one of several UK and worldwide rides happening around the same time, including nearby Portsmouth, Southampton, London and Worthing. It’s scheduled to allow people to take part in other rides as well, if they like. The ride forms part of national Bike Week (10-18 June 2017).
Memoria
Sat 1 July - Sun 23 July www.memoria.show
Memoria is an exciting new exhibition by artist Alex Peckham reflecting upon life and death. The work premiers at Phoenix Brighton in July and combines large-scale sculpture with dynamic sound and light to produce a theatrical and yet strangely familiar artwork. A giant moth which lies upon a bed is one of the focal points of the show and the exhibition seeks to contrast furnishings commonly found in the home with surreal sculptural elements and artefacts of the natural world. The creature has been painstakingly constructed, with each wing of the giant insect being covered entirely by hand with tiny tufts of imitation fur. Moths have four wings in total and the photograph shows one of the smaller rear wings in progress. To accompany the exhibition, there will also be an evening talk entitled Mortality and Art. The event will take place on Weds 19 July and will feature presentations from artists Alex Peckham, Rachael Allen and Lorenza Ippolito. Each artist will explore their views surrounding mortality and the influence it has on their practice. Both the exhibition and talk are free, however places for the talk are limited – sign up using the Eventbrite link on the Memoria website.
As part of Armed Forces Day, the famous Fort will be transformed to its former 1940s glory with actors in period costume performing World War 2 film scenes, Pathé news reels being played and food from the era being served. Each evening as the sun sets the audience will be treated to a famous wartime movie on a huge HD quality screen with the Fort as the perfect backdrop. The audience will be surrounded by the visions, sounds and feelings of wartime. Creative director Bill Murray said: “Our armed forces have a very special place in the hearts of many British people, and we wanted to create something amazing to commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Day. Newhaven Fort is the perfect setting for our immersive cinema experience which we hope will give the public a total feeling and sense of be part of wartime Britain.” The event begins each evening at 5pm with live entertainment and tours around the site to soak up the fantastic history Newhaven Fort offers. The impressive fortifications, which have protected the Fort from attack through two World Wars, have also kept its rich heritage virtually untouched. The audience can journey deep into the network of tunnels, venture onto the ramparts and gun emplacements and unlock the secret stories of the people who lived and worked at the Fort. Then at 7.30pm there will be a screening of a military themed film: Saving Private Ryan, The Great Escape, and Warhorse. Book your tickets at: www.immersivecinematic.co.uk

Father’s Day: Dads Go Free At Sea Life Centre
Round up the family and join in the fun throughout the summer holidays. Little explorers under five will be enchanted by storytelling at Knole and Bateman’s. This invitation extends to furry friends with a teddy bears’ picnic, while for the more intrepid adventurers, school’s out and nature is in, with the chance to tackle ’50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ activities. Meanwhile, there are crafts and garden games to keep the whole family on the sunny side of out-of-control this summer. One of the main highlights is The Jungle Book Trail - join the search for your favourite jungle creature, with a Jungle Book medal awarded at the end of the trail. There’s also the World War I Weekend - explore the encampment complete with mess tent, field ambulance and more. There will also be re-enactments and craft activities throughout the day. Why not join in the medieval ‘war games’ as Bodiam Castle prepares for its summer campaign? Test your wits playing lawn games like chess and Nine Men’s Morris, then test your skills on the archery range or tackle the Hundred Years War adventure trail. Discover the might of medieval England as a military camp pitches up outside the castle! An armourer will be on site hammering out an authentic medieval breast plate, which expert bowmen will put to the test over the bank holiday weekend. Can the armour survive the drawing power of the mighty English archers? Join in the castle bootcamp and train with Sir Edward’s army and all his best knights. New recruits will be put through their paces with marching and drills!
Summertime Relief Summer has finally come, and students everywhere are searching for some much-needed time off. The lucky ones graduated this year and will be partying and celebrating all throughout the summer... right? Not exactly. No doubt the prosecco will have been popped and the summer ball crashed by your mate who forgot to buy a ticket, but now the essays are in and it's time to find yourself a sweet like job to make some 'squids' over the break. Brighton is, without a doubt, the number one city to help you out. This could be through working weekends in hospitality, or even bar work on weekday evenings. And don't worry we’ve all been there, hauling ourselves into work after a crazy night until the early hours . Your manager may have a go, but let’s be honest, he didn't always have that haircut did he? It can make you feel just a little gloomy working in one of our favourite homeware stores while the sun shines outside. But honestly, how great is the British summertime anyway? And since the days are getting longer, you can still finish at five, hit the town and start planning that week away to Spain where the real summer begins! For those of us studying over the summer and dreading going back, we can still get out and enjoy those sporadic sunny days. Take a trip to the park so you can revise in the sun, or maybe sit in the garden with a glass (or two) of Pimm’s. Who said you couldn't memorise Newton's laws and drink while you’re doing it?

HELLO HELLO
FICKLE FRIENDS Fickle Friends are a band formed in Brighton, and who still hold the city very close to their hearts. Getting together back in 2013 while all studying music at university, they spent an impressive two years touring relentlessly without a label or a manager. Most of their early songs were in fact written in their bedrooms. As singer Natti tells me, they got to where they are “the old-fashioned way”, and it certainly seems to be paying off. By the time they landed a record deal with Polydor they’d already built up a remarkable fanbase. “It helped our sound develop too - we’re like a well-oiled machine now.” The band spent last year recording their debut album in sunny Los Angeles with Mike Crossey, a man responsible for recording the likes of Wolf Alice and indie-rock royalty The Arctic Monkeys. “California is so different to Brighton,” says Natti, “but recording there was incredible. The change of scenery really inspired us to write.” Apparently it was all quite a surreal experience. “You’re constantly going to the beach and cool bars and everyone is someone. Basically everything anyone’s told you about L.A. is probably true.” I ask if they’d ever consider relocating - but she reckons Berlin is the scene for them. “We’re more low-key. We’re set in our ways and Brighton bubble.” Their sound is an amalgamation of all their influences, and has grown and developed with them. “It started off as just me and my songs,” she tells me, “and I kinda wanted to be Ellie Goulding back then.” You can hear the obvious musical influences of bands such as Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club and Friendly Fires, but I’m not surprised to learn they are hugely inspired by movies too. “We especially like the iconic ‘80s films, like John Waters stuff. The song Cry Baby is a direct take on his film with the same name.” Their videos definitely have a colourful American feel - think Miami Vice meets teen rom-com. But despite the neon-coated outer shell, Natti describes how she loves the concept of “seemingly cool and vibrant pop songs with weird dark undertones.”
BY N AO M I DAV I S O N
Latest single Hello Hello is incredibly catchy, proving their songwriting capabilities. Think The 1975 mixed with an ‘80s power-pop feel. Sing-along hooks and catchy synth riffs make it equally nostalgic and liberating, with a disco-tinge that leaves the taste of summer in your mouth. But it’s all too easy to lump Fickle Friends in with the general wave of flirty indie-pop. As catchy, polished and fun as their music seems, there’s a depth tucked beneath that really sets them apart from the rest. The concept of dark undertones rings true in last year’s single, Brooklyn. “It’s about struggling with anxiety,” says Natti, noting just how powerful music can be, and the importance for artists to use their voices. “I hope that people can take something from that song and know that it’s such a normal way to feel.” Fickle Friends never seem to take a break from playing or writing. They’ve supported The Kooks on their farewell tour and are now set to play an extensive array of summer shows. Festivals have always been a big part of Fickle Friends life, having played over 50 in their first two years together. “We’re very excited for Reading and Leeds again. It was so good last year! And Secret Garden Party for the third time - but it’s the last one, which is sad.” I enquire about the album release date and she laughs - I guess they probably get asked this all the time, “We just keep adding more things!” Understandably they want to perfect their first album, and there’s no need for them to rush. Hello Hello and Brooklyn have done better than they ever expected. They say it will be released this year for sure, and it seems they just want to keep the anticipation going. Fickle Friends can expect things to be bigger than ever for 2017. Catch Fickle Friends at Standon Calling festival on 27-30 July 2017. And they'll also be performing at Brighton Pride this August! www.ficklefriends.co.uk

SUPREME LAUNCH
NORMANTON STREET BY N AO M I DAV I S O N Photo by © Mark Stubbs
Normanton Street are an unstoppable musical force combining elements of Jazz, Soul, R’n’B and Hip Hop. Ned and Nicholson, who play guitar and bass respectively, lived on the same street in Bedford where they grew up together playing in various bands before making the move to Brighton in 2011. They initially played as a duo before meeting singer Phoebe following a gig at the Mesmerist. Wiith the help of a Lauryn Hill cover, the band was born.
Live they are tight and polished, captivating audiences with their charm and charismatic flair. June sees the muchanticipated release of brand new single Supreme with a launch show at Brighton Unitarian Church on Fri 9 June. This will be a chance to catch them in a unique venue, where there will also be an exclusive screening of the new music video. Following the show, The Western will be host an official after-party featuring a special Normanton DJ set.
Ned tells me their goal is simple: “To continue growing and spreading positive vibes in the UK, Europe and around the world.” Their work ethic is certainly impressive having selfreleased everything to date on their own label, QM Records. Ned and Nicholson set up the label in 2014, and in addition to releasing their own material they work with and help promote an impressive array of up-and coming-talent, including: Tommy Sissons, Tilda Allie, Mrisi, Lebeaux, Frankie Stew, Harvey Gunn, Francesca Fulmini and Bobbie Johnson. The boys also host regular DJ nights and showcases aiming to help “cultivate a local scene by putting on lots of events.” The nights always promise great atmosphere and a chance to discover fresh new talent. Over the last few years they’ve played all around the world and received incredible reception. 2016 was an especially huge year for the band, seeing the release of single Take Time along with a six-part documentary shot by Londonbased Boom Productions. The film is a fascinating insight into the band, showing them from dressing room to stage to behind the scenes hanging out and writing. They also performed at the renowned South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. While they were there they recorded a video for the single Angelene - an interesting change of scenery for a Brighton band. But there they found their element, seen in the video jiving down the wide streets and poring over vinyl in a dark basement club.
Their aesthetic is unique, smoothly bringing the grooviest sounds and styles of the past into the modern day. Each member brings their own flair and influences - you’d think they would clash but this just adds to their distinct vibrancy. Nicholson tells me they don’t have a definitive aim for the future, “besides creating plenty of real good music for many years to come, and touring extensively.” They’re impossible to put in a box and they truly stick out from so many others in the Brighton music scene. There’s a sense too that they do what they want and do it themselves. Along with their musical prowess, it’s a winning formula. Big dates coming up from Normanton Street and QM Records: Fri 9 June - Normanton Street single at Unitarian Church - tickets available from www.normantonstreet.com Sat 10 June Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn at Green Door Store Free Entry showcases with up and coming local artists plus DJs always a great atmosphere: 1, 15 & 29 June at The Seven Stars 2 & 30 June at The North Laine Pub 15 & 27 June Upstairs at Patterns

The boys have had overwhelming responses from overseas fans, showing just how insane (in a good way) they are.

Consisting of current and previous band members of Botch, Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving, indie math-rockers Minus the Bear have a truly signature sound. Forming in Seattle, Washington in 2001, the band have since released six albums with classic sounds woven through each and every one of their songs. This quirky quartet only released their sixth album VOIDS earlier this year after a fiveyear break from their last. Breaking out of the ordinary, the boys are bringing VOIDS out in an old school cassette version alongside other additions. The band are at their best playing in intimate settings, with one of their previous shows being held in a record shop in their hometown. Join them for an awesome show at the similarly intimate Haunt.
HMV hailed them “pure, unadulterated, unconcerned pop-rock”, and Natives are a close-knit band with a long-time connection. Jack Fairbrother, Andy White and Greg Day started playing music together at school - vocalist Jim Thomas joined shortly after they got together. Prior to becoming the sensational Natives, the band went by ‘Not Advised’. It was under this name that they flew to the fabulous LA to record their debut album with a platinum-selling producer. But feeling like they needed a clean slate, the group changed their name. Their first album Indoor War focuses on a fictional character struggling with love and loss, which is what makes these songs so intriguing. Backed by polished melodies and various percussion, be sure to catch this intriguing band at Patterns.
Jumping straight out of New Jersey, punkrock outfit The Bouncing Souls are still full of beans after 30 years of playing together. Their music throughout the years has kept a constant consistency, maintaining lighthearted but thought-provoking tracks. Guitarist Pete Steinkopf said it was, “cool to look back at all of the records” and they’re “pretty happy” with them.

Thurston Moore’s critically-acclaimed band will be banging their drums down in Brighton this month. The Thurston Moore Group have been touring since the release of highly successful album The Best Day, which received an impressive four-star review from NME. Arguably the ‘most famous American’ in the indie-rock circle, Thurston Moore used to be a solo artist before creating his brilliant band. It was then that he was ranked 34th by Rolling Stone, for ‘100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time’ due to his unordinary guitar tunings. The singer-songwriter’s music ranges from carefully thought out sequences to frantic tunes that will take you on a rollercoaster of twists and turns. It’s definitely worth the ticket for this rock’n’roll ride.
SAT 24 JUNE
The Fallen Leaves are more than the ground of an autumn’s day; they are a British garagerock group who take their influences from the likes of The Who and The Rolling Stones. Described as “sharp, angular, melodic garage-pop”, this fantastic band are Punk Rock for Gentlemen. Fans will be excited to hear that the band will be returning to Brighton to play at The Hope & Ruin. Joining The Fallen Leaves will be the band London - a punk band who first got together over 30 years ago, managed by Simon Napier-Bell. After splitting in 1978, the band took a long (long) break and decided to regroup and return in 2008. Be ready for songs bursting with drums, bass and tongue-incheek lyrics.
THE HAUNT
Showing there’s more to them than their punkrocker image, their new song Battleground will see a portion of the proceedings go to the Indigenous Environmental Network. The band love all types of performances, from up close and personal spaces, to the great outdoors at festivals, as they enjoy all different audiences. You won’t be left disappointed.
TUES 27 JUNE
I bet you can’t guess where this band are from. The North Mississippi Allstars are a southern rock and blues band consisting of two brothers. Their first ever release, Shake Hands with Shorty, was nominated for the Grammy for “Best Contemporary Blues Album”, which later happened to two more songs. The band have been making music and touring the world for over 20 years with a new full-length album, Prayer for Peace, hitting your headphones on 2 June 2017. One half of the band, Cody Dickinson, has said the new album is “an exciting time for the North Mississippi Allstars” with a brandnew explosion of creativity running through their music.

“It started with a fascination of records and record players, which after all these years never left me. And somehow, by luck or design I managed to make a career out of it.” Norman Jay hadn’t even reached his teens when he played his first gig. Growing up glued to the radio and deeply passionate about his record collection, he fast became a serial clubber with music and nightlife in his spirit, most nights of the week spent in the club alongside his favourite tunes and his favourite people. We chat briefly about why, unlike his brothers and sisters, picking up a conventional musical instrument never appealed to Norman, who tells me he simply didn’t feel he had the discipline required to learn one. With an admirable sense of pride, he claims his only discipline was being a serial clubber and a serial record buyer. You can’t argue with that. Norman spent the best part of his youth digging for treasures in Soho record shops, befriending the staff and becoming part of that fascinating music community so many of us feel proud to be a part of. Back in those days, no two record shops were the same. So Norman would dip in and out of stores, stocking up on his favourites of jazz, reggae, hip-hop and house in each one.
Without a doubt, most of us download our music nowadays – it’s cheap and convenient, but of course it’s never the same as having a physical copy in your hands. Norman tells me he never jumped on the download train. Whether it was a generation thing or otherwise, he never gave up buying records, “Even though I don’t play them and haven’t done for years, I still buy records.” He always plays with CDJs and USBs onstage, purely down to the convenience factor, though he often has his sons remaster all his old favourites for him – a sweet thought of sharing music and memories that brings a smile to my face. I can’t help but wonder, and have to question the size his record collection must have reached by this point – but to no avail, “no idea. I’m too old to start counting now!” But it’s fair to say, it’s got to be an enormous, enchanting collection spanning a good few decades of legendary tunes. Never considering himself much of a follower of fashion, Norman has often been described – and describes himself – as a bit of a ‘maverick’ DJ. But he does try to remain dancefloor friendly when the vibe is right. “I could easily stand it front of any crowd and play stuff they’ve never heard of in their lives and show off. But you have a duty of care as a DJ. My maxim has always been: make friends with your dancefloor as quickly as possible.” That doesn’t mean he’s never taken risks in his work, though. Sometimes things go wrong by accident, and sometimes things go wrong deliberately. “It quickly focuses everyone’s attention
when the power switches off or the records aren’t working! It’s the ability to change. If something’s not working, just change it.” “There’s many young DJs out there that are brilliant, who could still teach me a thing or two!” Norman tells me when I ask how he’s adapted to the constantly changing music industry, and the technology that comes along with it. But he’s totally happy to stick to his roots, never feeling the pressure to keep up with the latest trends – something which earns him a great deal of respect. “The one thing that I’ve always understood, you know, however you try and reinvent the wheel… I know it’ll always be round.” It’s safe to say, people will always dance and listen to whatever comes out of the speakers when Norman’s in charge. I ask Norman about the difficulties that stood out for him the most when he first started out as a DJ, and without a second thought he admits he sadly faced a great deal of racism in the early days – something far too present in those days, as it still is now. But he moves on,
“
s The road to any kind of succes from rn lea is never easy. You the mistakes and you learn from the experiences, which I’ve spent my whole life doing.
”
Norman played his first ever Funk The Format festival last year, where we were blessed with incredible weather and an impressive turnout. He tells me happily that it felt like a home gig to him. “There were so many faces in the crowd that I recognised. Brighton and the South Coast has always given me a warm welcome and shown me a lot of love.” And he’ll be getting ready for a huge weekend of partying, playing his very own event Good Times on the Thames the day straight after on Sun 18 June. Limited to 220 people, Good Times is an incredible summer boat party he can’t wait to provide the soundtrack to.
He really is a firm believer that good tunes are merely a soundtrack - a backdrop to people having a good time. He insists as a DJ the most important thing is to consider the people first. “You could be playing the best music in the world - if the people are not feeling it then you’ve got no night - it’s not happening. Or you could go somewhere and the music’s absolutely dire, the DJ’s probably the worst you’ll ever hear but the crowd are going mad. Then you tell me who’s right.” Now that’s something we can all agree on.
Norman Jay plays Funk The Format at Hove Park on Sat 17 June. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch him playing the Good Times on the Thames boat party on Sun 18 June. www.normanjay.com

Known to my Mum as Llloyd from Corrie and to my Dad as Dave Lister from Red Dwarf, anyone with a musical bone in their body will instead recognise Craig Charles as a true musical force. Craig's career began at the age of 12 when he went to open for bands in his native Liverpool. Since then he’s acted with the RSC, done stand-up, fronted his own band, been a regular fixture on TV music shows and lived life large. He’s best loved for his Radio 6 show, where he holds court with his exhaustive musical knowledge. Since 2008 he’s been smashing DJ sets at clubs and festivals across the nation with a choice selection of classic funk and soul, cheeky remixes and fresh new dancefloor stompers.
Yes, we know we mention these chaps a lot. But you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere with better tunes and a friendlier crowd. So if you couldn't get into the Brighton Spiegeltent for their massive parties during Fringe, then worry no more. Concorde 2’s massively popular night returns with another full-on journey through dance music. Now it’s time for newcomer Paul Oakenfold to become ‘extended’, with a special four-hour set. He’s already gained a considerable reputation on the underground scene, playing small boutique clubs like Mount Everest Base Camp and Cream in Ibiza (wherever that is…) You’d better get ready for some massive tunes with breakdowns more emotionally epic than a Michael Bay remake of Lawrence Of Arabia. Mr Oakenfold will take us to the very depths of his record box and beyond, as he’s given the rime and freedom to create something really special.
The brainchild of German DJ Markus Saarländer, this successful night brings a taste of the Berlin underground to the heart of Brighton. From funk, to house, to techno, these German DJs and their allies are here to rock you. Now one of Brighton's most respected club nights, Berlin has seen many collaborations, pop-up events, two radio shows and of course the famous seafront terrace beach parties. This month sees a showcase party with massively acclaimed German label - Mother Recordings. Details are scarce right now, but there are a couple of big names making the trip across the channel to show how the Teutonic do it.

YOU’VE COME TO A RUNWAY, BABY!
P.25
BY E L L I E TA L E B I A N A true dance music goliath, his ever busy schedule sees him playing up to 60 huge shows a year. At an age where most artists are opening farm shops or exploring a passion for nose-flute music, he’s remained relevant, exciting, and hugely popular. Locally, the full Fatboy Slim spectacle hasn’t been seen since his takeover of the Amex Stadium with a Big Beach Boutique weekender in 2012. Sure, there’s been a few surprise appearances - Cook characteristically playing at house parties and baby discos amongst the odd club gig - but it still seems like his hometown has been missing out. Now this absence is set to change. His recent addition to the Wild Life bill coming to Brighton City Airport on Fri 9 – Sat 10 June, sees him performing once more on his doorstep. It’s the first time the event has been headlined by an act other than its organisers, Disclosure and Rudimental. “It means a lot to me,” he tells me, with genuine appreciation in his voice.
“
I run around the perimeter of the airfield a lot when I’m training, so it is literally up the road from me. Last year was quite hard. I could actually hear it outside my house. And it’s like: ‘Urghhh! All my mates are there, at the party you’re not invited to, on your doorstep…
”
"So, I’ve finally been invited [to perform], and for that I am very, very proud. And I’ll be playing to my hometown crowd!” So a small airport in Shoreham is about to be treated to the full spectacle of the Fatboy Slim circus. Aided by synchronised video and light effects, Cook playfully manipulates the crowd into ever climbing levels of euphoria. While he’s been doing this for a few years now, this translates into effortless perfection rather than wearied cynicism. It’s a delicious mix of pounding tunes, massive anthems and questionable shirts, all driven forward by an adoring crowd. “From my point of view - and I mean that literally - the audience never gets older. Because the people down the front are always that age.” The youngsters once forming part of the 250,000-strong crowd on Old Ship Beach 15 years ago might be standing nearer the back these days, but it doesn’t mean they’re any less fervent. For any fresh-faced turntablists hoping to emulate his considerable appeal, he maintains that building a rapport with the audience is more important than doing the best mix or incessantly playing with technology. “It’s about your relationship with the crowd and your communication with the crowd and being involved with them.” When it comes to the studio he’s adamant about the value of having fun. Breaking the rules and being different will get you noticed. “If you are going to do the same as everyone else you have to be so good at it.” Recently his son has been displaying an interest in the music-making process - but he’s wary of entering the industry himself as his father’s shadow will be hard to escape. “He’s interested in showbiz, but he can never be a TV and radio presenter or DJ. I think he’s going for the film, it’s the only thing we haven’t spoiled for him.”
The summer’s fast approaching, and he’s again resident at Cream when they return to Ibiza’s Amnesia. All day Spanish interviewers have been asking him over-reaching questions about line-ups on the white isle. “I have no idea who else is playing,” he says with a sigh. “I’m doing 30 festivals this summer - I can’t learn all the line-ups and I won’t be able to see them because I’ll be working.” It seems to be a relief for him to get a journalist only interested in a friendly chat. In the name of insightful journalism, I glibly ask if he likes to, err – cook. It turns out to be one of his big passions, co-owning five restaurants, he labels himself as a proper ‘foodie’. “I really love doing risotto. There’s something about the process, about the way that you can’t just bung everything together.” There must be an analogy for music production somewhere in this revelation. He claims many DJs like to replace turntables with the stove in their downtime. “We spend so much time travelling around and we eat out so often, and for some reason, most of the DJs that I know, our way of unwinding at the end of it is to cook. There is something therapeutic about it.” As someone who lives life quite large, he’s got a few great stories to tell. Like when he was living in a Marrakech recording studio for weeks with Damon Albarn - the Blur singer unwelcomely and repeatedly serenading him under his bedroom window. Or his Beats 1 show he promoted with some saucy nude Instagram snaps - the product of a bet which wandered out of control. He is quick to counter reports of an involvement in a Shoreham public toilet redevelopment. Whether he’s going to be an attendant, co-owner or otherwise, it’s simply not true. “Sadly - like many stories in the Mail on Sunday - I personally haven’t been to any meetings, and not agreed to anything.” Idle gossip is inexorably attached to the superstar lifestyle as is endless travel. Foreign trips are good, bringing with them new sights, sounds and tastes to enjoy, but cruising the same British motorways every weekend can become somewhat monotonous. The home nation audiences more than make up for this though. They give him an empathy and affection unlike any other country, and Brazil has certainly put some work into being welcoming. “There’s something about English crowds. They know me and they’ve grown up with me and they know my jokes. They kinda know what to expect and they egg me on.“ A good performance is judged purely on the audience’s reaction. Spontaneous group behaviour is a good barometer for people’s enjoyment, like crowd surfing, everyone sitting down during the builds, or just Scottish crowds shouting: ‘You rock! You fucking rock!’ all the way through a set. “Naked people in the audience that’s usually the sign of a good gig. If you’ve taken people to a point where they take their tops off, I think you’ve taken them to the next level - the next level of abandonment.”
Fatboy Slim will be available for flashing when he headlines Wild Life Festival, at Brighton City Airport on Fri 9 – Sat 10 June. www.wildlifefestival.com www.fatboyslim.net

ELECTION TIME
BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK
Peter Kyle (for Hove and Portslade)
VOTING FOR CHANGE
t some of Brighton & Hove's mos We had a few questions to ask e. vot s in time for the snap election prominent political party leader nce ak to us, but we did get a cha The Conservatives refused to spe e's Liberal Democrat candidates. Her to speak to our local Labour and what they had to say...
Why did you want to be an MP? I wanted to be an MP because I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to be a voice for our local community – to work on making our community fairer, safer, and greener; to secure more opportunities for young people in our city; to protect and improve our vital public services, and to be the best possible advocate for the people living here. It’s important to me that the areas from Portslade to Hangleton to Brunswick have someone fighting their corner for them. What’s your key promise in this campaign? I will continue to stand up for our local community in Hove and Portslade just as I have done over the past two years. If I am re-elected I will continue to fight for a better rail service for passengers, I will continue working with local parents to oppose the Tories’ £11.5 billion cuts to our local schools, and I will continue to use my voice in Parliament to demand that any Brexit deal must benefit the people and businesses of Hove and Portslade. How will the local community benefit if you win? Over the last two years I have been there for every single one of my constituents – people know that my door is always open, and I have helped hundreds of local people to resolve the problems they were experiencing. The people of Hove and Portslade can count on me to be a strong voice for our community and I will always stand up for the best interests of the people living here. Will you allow the NHS framework to be used as a money pit for private companies? I wholeheartedly stand against privatising our NHS which the Tories are hell bent on, and I am fighting for the best possible NHS. In Brighton and Hove, we’ve been let down more than anyone else by the Tories on the health service, and we now have the worst health services in the whole country.
This is one of the essential challenges of our time, and just as we as individuals must be wary of what we post publicly about ourselves, we must also be vigilant as to how the state uses information too. How will your party help the more vulnerable members of our society? I am incredibly proud of my personal record in standing up for vulnerable members of our society. As a backbench MP, I successfully campaigned for a change in the law to prevent vulnerable victims of domestic violence from being cross-examined by their abuser in court. I also recently spoke out in the Commons to call for an end to the practice of advertising “sex for rent”, and was delighted that the Justice Secretary agreed to take action – I know that if I am re-elected and I keep working, I will be able to get the law changed on this too. My party has always stood up for the vulnerable - from opposing the cruel bedroom tax and cuts to young peoples’ housing benefit, to campaigning for better funding for mental health treatment and standing against unfair employment tribunal fees, the Labour Party will always stand up for what is right. What will solve the problem of homelessness in Brighton & Hove? With one in every 69 people in Brighton and Hove being homeless, and an estimated 4,095 people sleeping rough or in emergency or temporary accommodation, this is a desperate problem for our city. Homelessness fell by almost two thirds under Labour but has doubled with Conservative Ministers in charge. The simple fact is that you can’t help the homeless if you won’t build affordable homes, but house building under the Tories has dropped to the lowest level since the 1920s.
This is a disgrace and I will be continuing to fight for the investment our public services desperately need.
I have worked with some incredible charities over the past two years including Emmaus and Shelter, and met some amazing people doing a brilliant job at alleviating this problem. However, I believe that this problem can only truly be solved if we commit to building many more affordable homes, which is why Labour has committed to building a million new homes over the next five years, with at least half to be council houses.
What are you going to do about the erosion of our right to privacy? Parliament, government, and technology companies must work closely together, along with the police, to ensure that the modern ways we communicate and share information enable the dignity of privacy but don’t impede the ability of law enforcement agencies to prevent harm to individuals, particularly children, and our businesses through fraud.
Will you hold yourself accountable for any broken campaign promises? Absolutely – although I’ve shown over the last two years that I keep the promises I make. For example, when I was elected in 2015 I pledged to create 1,000 apprenticeships in 1,000 days for young people in our city, and I am on course to achieve this – I just need some more time to finish the job!
Brighton has seen seven GP practices close in the past two years, and we have a mental health trust, a local hospital and an ambulance service all in special measures.
Emily Tester (Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats) Why do you want to be an MP? I was elected as a Councillor in Littlehampton in 2015. It’s been amazing to see the difference that you can have on peoples’ lives and the local community. When the chance came to stand for Parliament in Brighton Kemptown in the event of a snap election, I saw it as a huge opportunity to be a liberal voice for a very liberal city. Now the election has been called, I relish the chance to be the truly progressive, pro-European candidate in Brighton Kemptown.
How will your party help the more vulnerable members of our society? Mental health is a huge problem in this country. Our services are chronically underfunded, and neither Labour nor the Conservatives have outlined how they will fund mental health services. By adding a penny to income tax, we will increase funding for the NHS in Brighton and Hove by £20 million, £5 million of which is dedicated towards mental health services.
What’s your key promise in this campaign? This is truly an extraordinary general election, and it will be fought on one issue only: The European Union. I am proud that my party campaigned against Brexit, and that we are the only party standing in Kemptown fighting against a hard Brexit. I believe the people of Britain deserve to have their say on any final Brexit deal – with the option to Remain being on the ballot.
What will solve the problem of homelessness in Brighton & Hove? In tangent with the increased funding for mental health services in Brighton and Hove, we will put pressure on local councils to each have a provider of housing for the homeless. I personally would also support additional supported housing for those with more complex needs. Given the severity of the homelessness crisis in Brighton in particular I will be a strong advocate of these proposals and will apply pressure on the council to prioritise funding for homelessness services and to meet their affordable housing targets.
How will the local community benefit if you win? I am campaigning against school cuts in Brighton and Hove – under the Conservatives, our schools are set to lose over £13.9 million from their budgets by 2019. That means 373 fewer teachers in our schools. I know how difficult it is to afford housing in the South East. As a town councillor in West Sussex, I am campaigning not just for more affordable housing, but for the necessary facilities like GPs surgeries and bus routes to make it a home. Our party believes we must create a Housing Investment Bank to invest in more affordable housing and improve renters’ rights. Will you allow the NHS framework to be used as a money pit for private companies? It’s so important to me that the NHS has the funding and support it needs to function at its best. We shouldn’t be looking to private companies to make up the funding gap. Instead the Liberal Democrats have proposed a 1p increase on income tax as an interim measure, which will go directly into health and social care. What are you going to do about the errosion of our right to privacy? The Liberal Democrats as a party have a strong record of protecting our civil liberties. On state surveillance we were the only ones in Parliament to fight against Government proposals to collect and store all our web histories for 12 months, a mass surveillance programme that would cost billions. I am also strongly against any movements to scrap the Human Rights Act.
Ultimately the solution to homelessness must also include an improved housing policy to reduce the risk of people slipping into homelessness and to aid those already on the street. The local party intends make housing a key topic in the 2019 council elections, as well as for this general election - we've been in correspondence with local housing trusts and a homeless charity on developing our city housing policy and have been watching housing projects in other council areas with keen interest. Will you hold yourself accountable for any broken campaign promises? As a party in opposition, it is difficult to foresee the realities of putting policies into action when in government. Situations can change and force you to rethink the direction of a policy, but I would always be open and honest about this. This is how our democracy works, and if I am elected and cannot deliver on a policy, then I would have to apologise to my constituents.

What’s going to cheer you up better than a good romp? With a spot of nudity, scenes of a sexual nature and strong language throughout, this darkly funny, Mel Brooks style parody rips into the famous D.H. Lawrence novel.
A stunning personal realisation of one soldier’s experience of learning to cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Shell Shock heads to TOM. After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Tommy Atkins' observations on the absurdities of everyday life on ‘civvy street’ are frequently comic, occasionally absurd, sometimes violent and always poignant. This is a compelling depiction of the devastating effect combat duty can have on an individual. Atkins' wired energy leads to hyper-emotional responses - from post office queues and a trip to IKEA to his relationships with family and friends leading to alienation and anger.
A shy boy from Liverpool became the ‘60s equivalent of Harry Styles, only with a guitar and better hair. As Billy Fury, he equalled the Beatles record of 24 hits in the 1960s and spent over four years in the UK charts. He was dubbed the 'British Elvis' due to some sexy moves, astonishingly good looks and suggestive stage antics that infuriated parents. Now this thrilling production brings together a sample of his incredible musical legacy. Now in its 18th year and still furiously rocking, his original band, Fury's Tornados, re-live his timeless hits including Last Night Was Made For Love, Jealousy, Halfway to Paradise and many, many more. With the stunning Colin Gold as Billy Fury, it’ll be an evening of fun, nostalgia and music.

Bearing a few similarities to Brontë's own life, the orphaned titular character is starved of affection as she finds herself thrust into a strange new world. When she arrives at the mysterious Thornfield Hall deep in the Yorkshire moors, she meets enigmatic Mr Rochester.
Following the success of last year’s Cymbeline and Pericles, Droll And Folly Theatre return to BOAT to bring another Shakespeare play from the page to the stage in a single day. Led by director Nicholas Quirke, this script-in-hand performance will be as much of a surprise to the actors as the audience.
Adapted from Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents one of the greatest romances in English literature. When a secret from the past returns to haunt them, can Jane and Mr Rochester’s passion survive the forces that threaten to tear them apart forever? Social etiquette, tragedy and reinvention gloriously seep through this unforgettable love story.
Enjoy an exploration of text, character and staging that will yield some fresh, spontaneous, and unexpected results. Rather than being an immaculately polished production, this is a spontaneous exploration of text, character and staging to fully embrace the spirit of Shakespeare’s work.

MARK STEEL
B Y S T U A R T R O LT
We’ve done the introductions and platitudes. Mark Steel is soon headed to Brighton’s Caroline Of Brunswick for a test run of some fresh material. Already he’s indulging in one of the most British of pastimes – worrying about the weather. “It’s boiling hot, who on Earth is going to sit in a gloomy room, with a threadbare carpet, and drink from a plastic glass, to listen to me reading stuff which is ill-thought out gibberish?” he ventures. “But it is a great venue. People there tend to go along with the conceit. It’s quite exciting, that process. When you get a new bit that works it’s so exciting.” The next time he comes to the city it’s going to be an entirely different affair though. Steel’s joining the Brighton leg of the Stand Up For Refugees tour. Winding its way around the country this week, this comedy roadshow aims to raise money for Help Refugees, and raise a few giggles in the process. Performing alongside Shappi Khorsandi and Dara O'Briain at Brighton Dome’s concert hall on Wed 21 June, it promises to be a very special show. “All we can hope it achieves is that people come along and it’s a fun night. That’s your starting point. Anything more than that and you’re exaggerating your own importance if you’re a comic.” He pauses for a second. “I’m actually hoping it transforms the global situation, leads to the demise of Donald Trump and ushers in a new era of harmony and peace. But, you know, we might have to adjust our positions a bit.” The biggest grassroots distributor of aid to those in Europe and the Middle East currently affected by the global migrant crisis, Help Refugees, calls for fair treatment towards refugees and asylum seekers.
Currently the charity operates over twenty camps in Europe and the Middle East. It’s a situation which shows no sign of evaporating soon. There have been different waves of refugees through the ages, and each have brought their own individuality to add into the rich mixture of British identity. But right now, a very vocal group of our population are questioning if there is any more room on this isle for those escaping war and persecution.
“
llous Everybody thinks it’s marve ple when you hear about Jewish peo n whe But 0s. 193 the in e fleeing her ally somebody flees something equ m the ‘Oh : it’s n the , barbaric now the coming over here – they’re problem…
”
An estimated 60 million people throughout the world have been forced to flee their homes in recent years. This has created more than 15 million refugees worldwide, with developing (and almost universally poorer) countries disproportionately hosting over 80 per cent of these people. Across Europe, Germany France, Hungary, Italy, Greece and Austria receive significantly move applications from those seeking refuge than Britain. An estimated 117,234 refugees live in the UK, which is a paltry 0.18 per cent of our 64.1 million total population.
STAND UP FOR REFUGEES
We’re speaking only 45 hours after an atrocity in Manchester has claimed 22 lives. Committed by the son of a Libyan immigrant, the darker corners of social media are aflame with hate for those considered ‘not British’. I ask if the event would adversely affect public opinion on those seeking refuge here. “I don’t know. My opinion is meaningless... but I doubt it. After the underground was blown up by these lunatics, did it really shift attitudes?” He says comedians are not people who analyse these things excessively, otherwise “you’d go a bit round the bend.” Right now, he’s working to raise awareness and cash for the forcibly displaced. It does turn out these benefit gigs also serve as a rare opportunity to catch up with others on the scene. “I think they [benefit gigs] do make a difference. Everybody goes away feeling a little bit better. Well they should do. We don’t know yet. If we’re all absolutely awful, people might think: ‘I’m going to oppose the refugees now. What a shit night.’” he jokes. Belligerently progressive and with an innate sense of comic timing, Steel has been touting his immaculately crafted jokes around the comedy circuit since 1982. Since then there’s been TV shows, radio series and numerous tours. He’s annoyed the right-wing press, not just for his liberal leanings or his faded ‘70s and ‘80s references, but for a show about cricket. He likes cricket, England V South Africa is on in the background and there’s a distant part of his consciousness playing close attention. Recently he’s been travelling around with his In Town show. Based on his popular Radio 4 series, it sees him lovingly mock some of the country’s finest backwaters. Now he’s back out to incur some more indignation from local residents. “We’ve done Bedford, and then Matlock next Tuesday. And then four more after that. That usually takes half my year…” While comedy writing reduces down to mere minutes of stage time, the preparation is a long and detailed process. “I was talking to someone in a café, when I was trying to do some writing, and they were going: ‘Cor. You tend to think that that comics just get up and say it!’ That’s the trick. You write a really good show and it takes months. You’re not supposed to tell anyone, because it’s supposed to look like we’ve just got up and said it after a few beers.”

Last year the ‘Queen of the Sky’ enjoyed a sell-out six-week run in London’s West End, along with an acclaimed ten-date tour of the UK and Ireland. From airline training films to her own TV show back home in Australia, this larger than life cabin crew member treads the line between cheeky smut and barbed wit. It’s been a couple of decades since she first started thrilling and abusing audiences around the world. Since then she’s turned being offensive into an art-form - but it’s done with so much panache that you’ll readily forgive her. If you’re looking for some heartfelt confessions about what a diva’s swimsuit region might end up like, or just want to be absolutely petrified next time you fly, this is the show for you!

His new show for August will see a further sharpening of his sardonic, middle-class satire. The dazzlingly inventive Ian Smith has carved out a place on the circuit with some amiable anecdotes, smart charisma and clever callbacks. His fourth Edinburgh show looks set to be ashighly acclaimed as ever as it once again highlights his patient and surreal style.

Well, let us curtail your curiosity… One of the most exciting up-and-coming comedians on the circuit, Darren Harriott is finding himself increasingly busy as of late. Last year he smashed it with his Fringe show, and now he’s set to repeat that success. A winner of the Piccadilly Comedy Club New Comedian of the Year 2016, Eshaan Akbar has led something of a diverse life. It’s taken him from private banking to corporate communications, via a career in local government public policy. Now his new show Not for Prophet shows him flexing his considerable comic muscle.

Matt Forde is quickly becoming recognised as one of the nation’s best satirists, appearing on Have I Got News For You, Rory Bremner’s Coalition Report, 8 out of 10 Cats and Question Time. The Head First Acrobats team bring their internationally-acclaimed circus show Elixir (21 July) to the Pavilion Theatre, in which three scientists attempt to create the elixir of life through acrobatics – whilst also tempting visitors to try and develop their own acrobalancing skills in another workshop (20 July). After impressive audiences at last year’s festival, Ockham’s Razor are bound for return with their flawless new show Tipping Point (28-29 July), winner of the Total Theatre Award

All the way from Amsterdam is circus company Le Cirque Du Platzak, bringing Kermiz to the Pavilion Theatre (5 Aug) - an exciting circus adventure based on the darker side of a Grimm fairy tale. The American army come across the two-thousand-year-old tomb of Princess Ahmanet (Sofie Boutella) - and on opening it they release a powerful curse. Ahmanet was set to be the ruler of Egypt, but her father had wanted a son instead. So she killed her father, and following an attempt to take the throne she was buried alive as eternal punishment. When the tomb is opened, she is awoken with a fury so strong it could defy all of humanity.
ROUGH NIGHT FRI 16 JUNE A hen night goes hilariously wrong in this cynical comedy from Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs (the writers behind Broad City.) Featuring an impressive cast of Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer and ZoĂŤ Kravitz, five college best friends get back together for the first time in ten years for a bachelorette weekend in Miami. It seems like an average, slightly awkward hen party until the night takes a dark turn when they accidentally kill a male stripper. The five are forced to become closer as they suddenly find themselves caught up in an outrageous cover-up mission.

TV GUIDE BY N AO M I DAV I S O N
POLDARK THIS JUNE BBC ONE The third instalment of the lustful period drama is here. Based on the book series by Winston Graham, this season adapts his 1973 novel The Black Moon and the first half of The Four Swans. The story is set in the 18th century and filmed in Cornwall as it follows brooding bad boy Ross Poldark (Aiden Turner). This season will see him “traverse new family, new loves and new battles, as the French revolution casts a shadow over life in Cornwall”. Eleanor Tomlinson plays Ross’ poor sidelined wife Demelza, while Heida Reed plays his love interest Elizabeth. The last season was dark and ominous ending on a huge cliffhanger, but this season’s trailer isn’t giving much away either. But we can no doubt expect the usual brooding beach scenes, countless cliff top encounters - and many moody exchanges.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK FRI 9 JUNE NETFLIX The incredibly popular prison epic returns to our screens with its fifth season. Based on the real life experience of Piper Kerman from her 2010 memoir Orange is The New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison and initially adapted to just two seasons, it has now become one of Netflix’s most-watched original series. According to the trailer, this time round “it’s about to get real.” The trailer takes us back to the cliffhanger ending of the fourth season, featuring Daya (Dascha Polanco) with a gun to the head of the corrupt corrections officer Thomas Humphrey (Michael Torpey). It seems like Alex (Laura Prepon) and Piper (Taylor Schilling) are back on good terms too. However, when they say “we’re staying out of trouble” in the latest trailer… well, that’s pretty unlikely given their track record. If this season is anywhere near as gripping as the last this will be a binge watcher for sure.
GLOW FRI 23 JUNE NETFLIX Set in the ‘80s, Alison Brie stars as Ruth Wilder - the struggling actress living in Los Angeles. She tries for countless film auditions but never seems to get lucky. Down to her last few dollars, she attends an audition looking for ‘different women’. The show is called GLOW, which turns out to stand for “gorgeous ladies of wrestling”, and the brainchild of Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron) - a failed director who’s picked up a few bad habits along the way. Ruth suddenly finds herself thrown into the strange and sparkly world of women’s wrestling. The group are all very different, but all share that same feeling of being Hollywood outcasts. GLOW is guaranteed to be a funny, empowering romp packed with all the usual ‘80s clichés.
ORPHAN BLACK SAT 10 JUNE BBC The fifth and final season of the Emmy-winning TV show continues the unique story of Beth Childs and Sarah Manning, both played by Tatiana Maslany. The pair locked eyes when Beth jumped to her death from a train platform. The two became linked, immersed in a clone conspiracy that took over Sarah’s whole life. The Clone Club has expanded since that fateful day, but now it’s time to say goodbye. The trailer proves this will be the most dark and twisted season yet. The winning cast also includes the likes of Ari Millen, Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Skyler Wexler, Kevin Hanchard and many more.
Featuring a host of cherry-picked vintage stalls, Victorian fair-rides, workshops and live entertainment.

TEKKEN 7 FRI 2 JUNE PC, PS4, XBOX ONE The ninth game in the Tekken series, Tekken 7 is the first to use the Unreal Engine game developer tools. The game had a limited arcade release in Japan back in 2015 before the updated version Tekken 7: Fated Retribution was released in in July 2016. It's this version that's going to be released to us on the 2 June, complete with new stages, costumes, items and characters. Two new mechanisms are introduced to players in this instalment, including Rage Art, which allows players to execute critical attacks. The second, Power Crush, lets the player continue attacking whilst being hit by enemies. The bound system, which staggers a character to increase opportunity for additional hits, is replaced by Screw Attack, which makes the enemy spin sideways while airborne allowing the player to inflict hits after they reach the ground. Producer Katsuhiro Harada claims the game's story will be much darker than before, closer in tone to Tekken 4, and will serve as the conclusion of the Mishima clan saga.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: STORMBLOOD TUES 20 JUNE WINDOWS, MAC AND PS4
At the Fan Festival last year, Square Enix held a presentation covering a few raids for the next expansion for the online multiplayer, FFXIV. The first is The Bend of Time - Omega, pitting eight players against what looks to be a new version of the Omega Weapon. The second raid detailed what will probably resonate with veteran Final Fantasy players. Return to Ivalice is a 24-man raid scripted by Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics director/writer Yasumi Matsuno. In addition, Shin Megami Tensei IV character designer Keita Amemiya has designed all the bosses. Stormblood will also be introducing diving and swimming to FFXIV - you can swim while mounted, but only with a flying mount. Swimming as a mechanic will be limited to certain locations, and underwater combat is so far unavailable.
ARMS It's been eight years since we last saw Crash in Mind Over Mutant, and fans have been calling for a reboot since then. Crash Bandicoot, one of our favourite video game characters from the good ol' days, is finally returning in his very own N'Sane Trilogy. The guys at Activision and Vicarious Visions have been working hard to update the classic trilogy you remember - Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. Developers said, "It's practically impossible to make a traditional remaster of the original Naughty Dog games. They're roughly 20 years old, and technology has advanced significantly in that time. The original code and assets are nearly unusable. Nearly. But we don't consider this a remake. We know how much you all love the original games, so we didn't want to fully remake them. The N. Sane Trilogy is a remaster plus."
FRI 16 JUNE NINTENDO SWITCH A fighting game exclusive to Nintendo Switch, Arms gives up to four players the chance to choose a fighter and battle. Using a variety of extendable arms, they knock out their opponents in a three-dimensional arena. Arms is part of a small but growing list of original Nintendo properties debuting on Switch. According to TheVerge.com, the game plays “sort of like a deeper, more intense version of Wii Sports boxing, utilising the Switch’s motion controls to simulate your fists.” Each character has a different set of abilities and unique gloves for different strategies. Players are able to use the system's Joy-Con motion-controllers to operate each arm individually. Conventional control methods, such as with the Pro controller, can also be used. Players are also able to customise their arm load-outs, with ability to select each arm independently. A 2v2 game mode will also be available.

WEST PIER STUDIO BY TA C I TA F R E N C H
Speaking as someone who never made it past the Rosetta Stone’s Level 3 Italian programme, this is such an exciting app from West Pier Studio that has really made an impact on those looking to take their language skills up a notch. So, I decided to download uTalk and practice my Italian skills! There are many things to love about Brighton - but its unique game studios has got to be one of them. West Pier Studio, based on Brighton seafront is just one of these studios. Founded back in 2011 by three ex-Disney gaming employees, Craig Gabell, Vassos Shirarlis and Dominic Jackson, the team came together to form a simple plan, bringing together years of experience to create top-ofthe-range mobile software. Previously working with huge companies such as Sony, Eidos, THQ, and Activision, West Pier Studio are best known for their mobile apps, exciting social games and one of their largest projects uTalk. Commissioned by one of the largest leading language software companies, EuroTalk, West Pier wanted an app that would apply their gaming expertise to create a crossplatform idea - to combine gaming and learning. Co-founder and general manager Craig Gabell says, "Working with uTalk is a very important part of West Pier Studio's growth path. In a market saturated with games, we wanted to focus on playful products that offer innovative education to the user.” Working with uTalk, Gabell’s idea also aims to provide reallife rewards within the game. He continues, “At the core of the design is a fun and addictive achievements point system - which is way better than gaining mere game points. Our idea of ’Earn as you Learn’ means the more the player learns and the more they achieve, the more real money rewards they earn." Eurotalk, creators of uTalk, was founded 25 years ago, and has won Queen's Awards for both export and innovation. It was founded by Sussex-based chairman Richard Howeson who truly appreciates the energy and creativity at West Pier Studio and their friendly approach. He says, "This is a major step forward for our customers. We're pushing technology all the time to ensure anyone learning with us will be successful and have fun learning languages."
At first look, I was amazed by the variety of languages available to users - even going so far as Azerbaijani and Zulu! Tempted though I was to test out my best Arabic accent I decided to stick with Italian. The great thing about this app is that it's completely free to download, easy to use, and so fun - which makes learning a language so much less stressful. By recording yourself repeating phrases you can persevere until you are absolutely satisfied with your performance. Then you can progress to the games, beginning at an easy level to increase your confidence and win you points - which can unlock the next level of the language. As a gamer, I particularly enjoyed this format, which offers something different from most language learning apps on the market - which are all too often saturated with in-app purchases. For all those thinking of travelling soon, this would be a welcome addition to the pocket phrase book! Ciao! uTalk is available on all platforms from PC and mobile to Mac across more than an incredible 130 languages. Customers will be able to choose exactly what they want to learn from any language.

Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival 2017 Sat 1 - Sun 2 July
ier, le Round The P d d a P t a r a e y This in Music Stage a M e th r o s n o BN1 sp in for a great e ’r u o y w o n k – so you weekend! From the original 50 people who attended the first ‘Paddle’ back in 1996, the event has evolved into what is now regarded as the world’s largest free charity beach festival, with average visitor numbers of over 50,000 people! Yes, you heard that right - the world’s biggest free charity beach festival is in Brighton & Hove. Who’d have thought all those pebbles would have been so inviting? So, what is Paddle and why don't you know more about it? Briefly, it’s a fun-packed summer weekend of watersports and beach-based activities helping to raise money for charity, supported and surrounded by a ‘Paddle Village’ based on the beautiful Hove Lawns. Paddle began life back in 1996 as the brainchild of Director Dave Samuel. He was looking for a way of campaigning for clean seas along the coast, but also as a way of bringing the surfing community together. From that first year with just 50 people turning up, it progressed to 100 people by year two - only this time people stuck around to have a few relaxed drinks on the lawns and enjoy the sunshine a little longer. “By year three I think someone bought a frisbee and a couple had an impromptu jam on guitars,” Dave said. The freespirited feel and vibe of the event was set there and then. Brighton naturally had its own take on how a beach festival should be run, and for 21 years Dave has cultivated and developed that on the city’s behalf. The event is run by volunteers, which means after costs (around £90k each year) all profit goes to charity. It’s a really special event which Brightonians and visitors alike seem to have taken to heart, and that’s the reason the BN1 team just had to get involved.
There are now four entertainment stages catering for a wide variety of age and tastes, numerous outdoor restaurants, water and land-based activities and literally hundreds of exhibition and retail spaces too. The event also reaches out with its support in many ways, offering strong community engagement to ensure it is fully inclusive. A prime example is the Access Beach (sponsored by B&H Bus Company), allowing children and young people with disabilities a safe, supported and controlled access to the sea, delivering what promises to be a life-changing experience for those involved. In 2014, Paddle Round The Pier won ‘Best Event in the City’ in the Brighton & Hove Business Awards and was highly commended in 2015. It has been voted one of the ‘Top Ten Summer Festivals’ by the Times and ‘Top 15 Summer Destinations’ by the Guardian. The Independent even noted it as “a highlight of the summer”, as well as the Express, The Sun and the Mail on Sunday pinning Paddle as one of the ‘Top 30 Festivals to Visit’. It’s a fantastically fun weekend which we thoroughly recommend you get involved in. Trust us, there really is something for everyone.
Paddle Round The Pier will be coming to Hove lawns on Sat 1 to Sun 2 July! for more info visit www.paddleroundthepier.com
BN1 DANCE CREW BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK
JP Omari has always loved dancing. It’s an obsession which has flowed through his entire life, and taken the multi-award winning hip hop dancer, choreographer and teacher around the world. From being the first breakdancer to take part in a reality TV dance show to performing with artists like Dizzee Rascal, Sean Paul, and Orbital, he’s also made an impact on this blossoming scene with his own dance academy. Streetfunk seeks to train and inspire anyone, aged four and up, to hit the dancefloor. “For me, teaching and sharing my passion has been very important. Now with the studios we have the opportunity to train young people to a world-class level.” Based at the East end of the city, his Marina Studios is a set of dance spaces. These are connected by a corridor lined with trophies his crews have won. It’s an impressive haul, regionally, nationally, and internationally, they’ve won nearly every title open to them. This complex acts as a base for the growing Streetfunk network, which reaches out to over 650 students weekly. Through hip hop dance and funk styles, it teaches the values of hard work, discipline, respect and, most of all, having fun. While fun is key, the more enthusiastic and skilled amongst the classes can also compete in regional, national, and international championships. Omari’s BN1 Crew (no relation to this magazine, despite our Friday afternoon office dance-offs being described as ‘epic’) secured the XM Under 18 Advanced
title at the British Streetdance Championships last October. He admits they did exceptionally well. A decision was made to take part with only six weeks to prepare rather than wait another year. “It did give a kick up the backside for them to keep going. But because of the way they are – individually they’re very driven kids – it was quite an organic process with how I taught them. They brought up really good ideas, so it was a group work.” Many of the crew members have been with Streetfunk for ten years, and their endeavours have taken to the world championships in Glasgow next month. They’ve reached a level which their coach proudly describes as: ‘unstoppable.’ But it isn’t just this crew which is making waves in the competitive street-dance scene. The dancers from Streetfunk took home 32 trophies from those championships. At this pace Omari is going to soon run out of space for his crews’ sprawling trophy collection. Defiance also snatched the XM Under 18 Intermediate title. “They won, even though they’re really under 14. They were bumped up… and still won!” While his Stereo-Shock came in at a worthy fourth in their division at the British Championships, Killer Bees under 12 crew found themselves performing in a division with kids much older than them, and prevailed. “They’re a force to be reckoned with. They really made me emotional, they were just outstanding. Especially for their age, the stuff that they bring and
P.45
the personality that they bring – they’re just phenomenal.” While the aim is to see some of his crews crowned world champions next month, Omari is also striving to make his Marina Studio the definitive dance facility in the south east. It’s already acquired a fearsome reputation through the discipline and talent of both its pupils and teachers. “They put in so much time – all the kids, and the parents as well. They put time money, effort, everything. It’s a big commitment and a sacrifice. They come in to train whilst their friends are off at parties and stuff. But they’ve chosen to be here and work and be better.” His core members, aged seven and upwards, train as a crew for 3 ½ hours a week, with two hours of normal classes, plus even more practice at home. It’s a lifestyle comparable to being an athlete. The Streetfunk community has had an undeniable effect on the quality of street dance in the region. And now some of his crew members are now at a level where they’ve become teachers themselves, rising through the ranks from student and assistant to instructor. This month sees their annual Straight Up showcase event. Nearly all of the students will be showing off their skills at Brighton Dome on Sat 10 June, together with the UK's leading B-boy crew - Soul Mavericks. “Being able to fill out the Dome every year, is a great achievement. But it’s also a chance for the whole StreetFunk family, all the kids and all the parents, to come in and celebrate all the work the kids have been doing.” The ethos is to push and challenge themselves to be the best they can be. These classes do offer a potential for becoming established in the wider industry. Older students have moved on to perform on the X-Factor Live, Rhianna, and Little Mix tours, as well as a range of West End shows. “For me it’s about giving the opportunities they get here, through competitions, classes, and performances, but also training them to a level where this can become a career if they choose. I just want to them to be out there, doing what they love doing.” Straight Up, with Soul Mavericks, heads to Brighton Dome on Sat 10 June
