OUR STORY
In reaction to the pandemic, which saw a temporary closure of nearly all our distribution points, we had the flexibility to develop a subscription model. This allowed us to continue printing a monthly physical version and reach our audience.
With lockdowns behind us and the world returning to normality, it is the right time to move back to being a ‘freemium’ publication. While our core focus will always be a celebration of local culture and community, there is a new ambition to reach out to an even wider audience.
Improved distribution will see the magazine reaching new areas across Brighton, Sussex and London, while continuing to offer a home delivery service.
BN1 Magazine was born out of a desire to better reflect ground-breaking arts and culture across Brighton & Hove, shining a light on the events and work which were being overlooked by traditional local media.
Over the last decade this mission has expanded to cover the whole of Sussex - a county welcoming innovation and vibrant trade since pre-history, leading the way for Britain (and in many cases the world) while proudly embracing its heritage. And in turn, our focus has evolved from just arts and music to include what matters to our audience. From emerging issues and lifestyle trends to science & nature or wellbeing, we strive to find those stories which resonate with communities around the region. Everything we do is driven by credibility and independence, along with a burning passion to showcase the incredible endeavours of artists and businesses around us. We live in a special region, so we also need to be special.
By providing objective, diverse and good-natured content, we’ve established ourselves as a recognised and trusted brand, with a loyal readership and a growing number of stockists – from Sussex’s best cultural hubs to Britain’s leading supermarkets.
OUR AUDIENCE
Our experience has shown there’s no such thing as an ‘average’ BN1 Magazine reader, although there are commonalities binding them together as a group. Our audience is curious about the community around them. They like things that are a little bit ‘special’, and eager to hear about emerging fashions. There’s obviously a shared interest in going out, whether it’s to theatres, galleries or sports fixtures, supporting local economies and building a better life for themselves.
As such, we see a strong following amongst young families and professionals, with 60% of our readership coming from ABC1.
So, what unites our audience? Our mission to create honest and enthusiastic content ,which draws on a wide range of experiences and conversations, has meant the BN1 audience is a group of individuals who’ve come to trust us and the subjects we talk about.
