DA DOO RON RON PRESENTS Sat 21st April / The Prince Albert / 8.30pm / £7 adv, £8 on the door

By Deborah Fairfield

Apparently the last ‘The Pooh Sticks’ show in Brighton and it’s the first since 1993! So grab a ticket for the best kept secret of the indie scene before it’s too late! Formed by Huw Williams in late 1987, the line-up was completed by Trudi Tangerine, Paul, Alison and Stephanie. They sounded, as they always do, like a band having fun with their record collection, not to mention being managed by the team that looked after Guns n Roses.

Hello Brightonians! Welcome to April. Blimey the months are rolling on quickly, all hail summer! Can’t wait to fire up those BBQs and bum about on the beach all day...ahh bliss. Last month we saw the official first day of Spring; trees are beginning to look like trees again, the Sun is warming up our cockles and finally we can come out of hibernation. Last month we had an incredible musical line-up as Brighton was graced by many-a-talented-face including Sleigh Bells, Ghostpoet, Civil Wars, Earth and the return of indie rockers The Maccabees. This month the sound sensations continue. Having just finished their sold out UK album tour, Bombay Bicycle Club pit-stop at the Brighton Centre on the 16th before LADYHAWKE, aka Pip Brown dubbed breakthrough artists of the moment, lights up Komedia with her pop fresh beats and synthetic sounds on the 23rd. If that doesn’t perk up your ears like an Easter bunny, the hounds of love, aka The Futureheads also take to the Komedia stage on the 2nd with their delightful four-part harmonies and guitar riffs. Make sure you check out BN1’s listings for what else is happening this month, we’ve done the hard work for you! Also this April prepare yourselves for a carnival like no other; possibly the most entrancing of productions as the Ladyboys of Bangkok return with their colourful costumes and elaborate musical show entitled ‘Carnival Queens’. Tickets go on sale from the 24th April, so don’t delay as they can be booked up quickly. Finally, if you’re wanting to tone up for summer, what better way to shred some pounds and build some muscle than the Brighton Marathon on the 18th. With around 18,000 people expected to attend, don’t be lazy, get out there and at least show your support.

But the 1400 m2 of bare human flesh peddling furiously around Brighton on Sunday 12 June, as part of the World Naked Bike Ride, will be doing exactly that. MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES St Georges Church / April 14th

FUTURES The Haunt / April 17th

I can’t quite believe that Martin Stephenson has been at this music thing for four decades now, having formed way back in the dark old days of 1982. Then they were considered small-time indie-popsters but have over the years developed themselves into near-legends of the English folk scene. Here we get to enjoy the whole of the frankly beautiful ‘Boat to Bolivia’ album, and, seeing as it is their first proper tour for nearly twenty years it is sure to be rammed full of those who wish that music were more like this now.

This month’s hot new band hit town and as is often becoming the case of late playing at the Haunt, a rock band who it is expected big things of, this show is being put together by those lovely people at LOUT and should therefore launch the band onto bigger and better things. Already veterans of several festivals and with a Gil Norton (Pixies, etc) produced record to promote, things are definitely on the up for this fourpiece band from Buckinghamshire.

BLOOD READ SHOES Concorde2 / April 27th

BOMBAY BICYLE CLUB Brighton Centre / April 16th

OF MONTREAL Concorde2 / April 26th

They have, unbelievably, been at this rock’n’roll lark now for close on eight years and are probably one of our better known exports and even though they did get a little bit bored by the sea they are now back to play by the sea. If you don’t know what to expect, well, rock’n’roll, grit and some great pop songs with lots of distorted guitars. Think this is one for people who just love all things two-piece and rock’n’roll - think White Stripes but with even more carnage on stage and even more exhuberance in their playing. They really should take the C2 by storm and hopefully have a homecoming that they can be proud of and which stays in the minds of Brighton’s rock’n’roll fraternity for sometime.

It only feels like yesterday that these whippersnappers were being tipped for greatness across the indie-loving press and whilst it may not have happened for them on the scale predicted this is sure to be a massive show for a band who have long avoided the trappings of the proper music industry. I’d like to know just how many bands in this day and age who would reject offers from a whole cartel of major record labels in favour of recording, promoting and releasing their debut album. Anyway, with nothing new to focus all their attentions on expect this to be a rollocking ride through their back catalogue and expect the Brighton Centre for one night at least to resemble some of our more hipper enclaves in the North Laine.

One of the most original and delightful of the whole recent crop of alternative pop bands that have popped up from the US of A. In fact these guys continue the tradition of the sprawling Elephant 6 collective. If that doesn’t make any sense well go listen to Neutral Milk Hotel and tell me they ain’t great and I’ll tell you you’ve got something wrong with your ears! The band are in town promoting their brand new album ‘Paralytic Stalks’, (released in February) to warm reviews from the music press, and promise a great show. Arguably their most personal record yet the music is also, some would argue, at its most original too, veering from almost normal pop songs to great crescendos of Krautrockian proportions.

We have another pair of weekend tickets worth £170 to give away to MEADOWLANDS FESTIVAL (1–3 June) one lucky reader! All you have to do is send your Name, Tel No. and Address to meadowlands@bn1magazine.co.uk Please put “WONDERFUL MEADOWLANDS” in the subject header. A winner will be chosen at random and announced at the end of April. Best of luck!

archive exclusive interview

They’ve toured with Muse, headlined festivals alongside the Foo Fighters and Motorhead, released 10 albums, had international number ones and they’re from Brighton. So why on earth have we not heard of Archive? Andy Hollis went for a glass of wine with founding member Danny Griffiths to find out...

Danny, the obvious question looking at the band’s history and the fact you originate from here, why don’t we know Archive? Well personally I don’t think the timing has every really been there for Archive in the UK. The French originally picked up on the band and from there it spread throughout Europe without ever really impacting on the UK scene. For various reasons we’ve not actually released any music in the UK since 2003, and that was only a self-released album online. We were licensed to Warner Bros across Europe at the time but not in the UK, so it’s really technicalities

that have held it back. We’re hoping that’s going to change now on the new label. Does it frustrate you? Yes and no really. It would be nice to be recognised within your home country for what you do, but on the upside with our popularity in Europe it means we’ve toured and played at some amazing places and venues. To be absolutely honest, I’d prefer to be playing a large venue in Paris than the dead of night in Hull........I do want to do a big gig in Brighton at some point soon though. You’re incredibly well

known in France - I guess it must be quite nice to have that recognition and then be able to come back to peace and quiet though? It’s nice to have the balance of both really. It’s strange because being based here it’s easy to forget the interest from the fans you have overseas, so it’s lovely to go out on tour and feel that adoration again! I guess it can be quite depressing to come back here and have that “back to real life” feeling. It’s another “yes and no” one in truth. We’re all pretty confident that with the new label all this will change.

Okay, let’s talk about the new label. There’s a doublealbum slated for release in August finally with an emphasis on the UK. What’s the gameplan? Yeah, well the beauty of the new label is that they’re so young and full of energy and enthusiasm. They’ve a great roster there including the Black Keys and Mercury Rev and they’re really excited about Archive. We’ve got a great back story and a lot of history and it’s just great to see how much enthusiasm the label have for the band, having been on a major for so long. The first release is in May which is a 12 ” vinyl which

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 9 ]

some great gigs. What’s your most memorable gig experience? There’s just so many. Playing with Muse at the Parc de Princes in Paris was amazing. Biffy Clyro were playing there as well. There were 54,000 there that day and we won over a load of Muse fans. Headlining alongside Motorhead and ZZ Top was pretty special too. The poster for that has pride of place in my house! Okay, let’s help our readers out here - you’ve released 10 albums to date, where should the curious listener start? It depends on their taste really! We chop and change quite a lot. The first album (Londinium) was compared in the press to Portishead and Massive Attack, but now people seem confused as to where to put us. We’re a collective really so there’s a lot of musicians involved, with Darius and I as the constants. As a result though, each release is pretty experimental. You All Look The Same To Me seems to be most people’s favourite though. Any we should avoid? Ha - I would avoid Take My Head!

personally for me is amazing - Warner Bros never released vinyl but I think it’s such an important and desirable format. It’s a really exciting time for the band. One of your songs, Fuck You, even became something of an anthem for the Arab Spring uprisings.... tell us about that? We only really discovered that out of the blue to be honest. With the uprising in Iran, students took on two of our songs, Bullets and Fuck You - there’s even a YouTube version they put together with footage of Armidinajhad and the lyrics to Fuck You interposed over the images.

Since then we’ve actually had to cancel gigs in that part of the world after advice from the British Embassy! And you’ve had over 11m hits on YouTube for the song “You Make Me Feel”, with a little help from a freediver!? Yes - there’s some amazing footage of the French World Freediving Champion that they’ve put to our track. Again we didn’t initially know it was being used until a fan highlighted it to us. The footage works beautifully with the music. Just looking at your touring history, you’ve played with Muse, the Foo Fighters -

Why’s that? It was our second album - we’d just been dropped by Island and sacked our two vocalists. We were pretty confused about what we were doing. The label that we signed to then, Independiente, persuaded us to work with producers and mixers we really weren’t keen on....so....well, look, there’s still a couple of good tracks on there, but personally I think as an album it was pretty awful. Mind you, strangely enough, it was that album that really launched us in Europe. So what does the new album have in store? Well it’s experimental as

always. It’s drum heavy but full of love songs! The album before there was lots of cultural observations and no love songs. We’ve got a new singer, Holly, on this album as well who’s amazing, so we’ve gone all soppy. Sort of. I know you’re really keen to bring Brighton’s musical community together more. What’s the thinking behind that? It’s just an idea really at the moment. There’s so much creative talent in Brighton and there’s an incredible opportunity here, whilst the business is so tough, to pool together a lot of creative resources. I like the way Josh Homme and Dave Grohl mess around constantly with each other’s music - I see it as something potentially like the Native Tongues in the late 80’s where De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep etc all collaborated together. I’ve actually just put together a remix for Kovak’s forthcoming single down here, so it’s doing all that kind of thing with local acts and talents. When things are tough, people get creative, and there’s no better place to do that than Brighton. So what are your hopes for 2012 and beyond? 2012 is a pretty quiet year for us on the live front - we’ve played solidly for the last couple of years touring so we thought we should give people’s ears a break for a bit. The album will be out in August though, and from then we’ll be pretty much touring again nonstop until 2014. As I say, hopefully I’ll achieve one of our goals which is to play a big show in Brighton! Archive’s single - double A side, Wiped Out/Violently is out on Co-op Records in May New Album (as yet untitled) to follow in August.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? PART OF BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 26TH MAY 2012

Brighton resident Neil Bartlett has a fine choice of hats: theatre director, activist, novelist and performer. Everything he’s turned his attention to has won him wide-spread acclaim, but despite this success it remains all about the performance for him. By Stuart Rolt

Rising from a scene that held shows in the most unlikely of place, such as nightclubs and disused warehouses, Bartlett went on to bigger and bolder productions at venues, including the Royal Court, the ICA and Southwark Cathedral, before reversing the fortunes of the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, during his tenure as Artistic director at the then-ailing playhouse. Despite the scale of some his productions, Bartlett remains unafraid to return to his raw performance roots in his new show for the Brighton Festival. “It’s just me on a bare stage”, he explains. “I might lash out and have a prop. One of the pieces involves a cigarette and a glass of champagne. Another involves a young man without any clothes on.” This upcoming show, What Can You Do?, offers us a chance to see him relive some of his early work, including excerpts from his notable A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep, Sarrasine and Night After Night productions, together with a brand new piece specially commissioned for the Festival. “In the early days those pieces were done in all sorts of places, very much in contrast to my bigger and more respectable work,” Bartlett says. Much of Bartlett’s early work was born out of frustration with Section 28 (a short-lived attempt to ban the “promotion” of homosexuality) and the exploding AIDS epidemic. Depiction of

the gay community in mainstream media at this time was largely limited to portraying them as either comic or tragic figures with little to offer society. “I was just one of the people that was making noise”, he modestly reminisces. “If anyone had said to me in 1984 that, in 28 years’ time, the age of consent would be equalised, there’ll be no newspapers publishing headlines saying gay people should be rounded up and got rid of. Or that there would be civil partnerships now, I’d have to say they were living in cloud cuckoo land. It’s rather extraordinary looking back”. Living in Brighton, and the freedom of expression the city offers, provides an ideal base for Bartlett to work from. But he’s never taken his home town’s liberal attitudes for granted. “It’s something that we make happen. I think we all know that we’ve got something special here. Brighton is special because we make it special”, he suggests. “Brighton was a town built for pleasure, the only reason to come to here is to misbehave. That’s what we sell. The economy of the city is based on coming here to do whatever the naughty thing is that they won’t let you do at home. So we (the LGBT community) fit into that rather well”. With theatre productions all over the world, work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, three well-received books and a

range of plaudits for his labours, including an OBE for his work with the Lyric, does Bartlett feel he has nothing left to prove? “I’m not sure that I’ve ever felt I had something to prove. I’m very happy to do lots of things”, he decides. “I stopped worrying about which box I fitted into in about 1989. You don’t need to be in a box. You can perform naked with Regina Fong and do a play at the Royal Court. Gay culture has always been about leaping between high and low… I like that”. With a large part of his body of work inspired by his experiences as a gay man, Bartlett is seemingly often pigeonholed as a “gay theatre producer”, but it’s a tag he’s willing to bear if it’s on his own terms. “It would be silly of me to say I’m not, because I’m gay and I work in the theatre. But once it was a way of putting you down… People have stopped doing that. “If I did Twelfth Night people would say ‘It’s gay, he’s got boys dressing as girls, and girls dressing as boys’, he laughs. “But if I did Shakespeare‘s Pericles, they’d say ‘That’s not gay, why are you doing that? I’d always try and say ‘This play’s about love, death and politics. Which are the only things really worth talking about…‘ So why can’t we talk about that?” Neil Bartlett’s What Can You Do? comes to the Theatre Royal as part of the Brighton Festival on Sat 26 May.

ROLLING ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING | 22ND APRIL AT PAVILLION THEATRE | 6TH MAY AT SALLIS BENNEY THEATRE

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 13 ]

Brighton Fringe festival is back for its 2012 season on Saturday 5th May 2012. With over 3,700 shows being presented in 193 venues, it’s more than a little daunting for the novice festival goer. Lucky for you then, we’ve got a handy survival guide for you to take solace from.

1. Get yourself a festival programme. There are plenty of them around. This will be your companion for three weeks, so get familiar with it. This magical publication will also double as a raft, megaphone or rain-hat in times of emergency. It also lists nearly everything that’s occurring. Very handy indeed. 2. Work out what you fancy experiencing. You are about to become an integral part of the third largest festival of its kind in the world, with every imaginable art-form waiting for you to enjoy it. So get a rough idea of what you’re up for. Don’t be scared by the scale of it all, just make a decision and book early, you won’t be disappointed. 3. Socialise. Get yourself out there, amongst your fellow Fringe-sters, to soak up some of the events marvellous atmosphere. There are several “festival hubs” around the city, where cheery spirited punters will be comparing their various wild performance experiences over a well-earned drink. Hendricks will be returning to Jubilee Square once again for some fine gin cocktails and some literary splendour. Whilst the crew from Upstairs at Three and Ten will be running a pop-up venue The

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL

Warren, in Wagner Hall behind West St, with a secluded garden and bar to offer some respite from all the dashing about. The official hub for the Fringe is on North St, but any of these spots is a good place to get information, or tips on what’s hot and what’s not. 4. Be prepared to deviate from, or modify, your so-carefully made plans. If you hear about anything that sounds interesting, then just go for it. Some of the greatest Fringe experiences stem from spur of the moment decisions. If you can’t get tickets for a particular show, don’t worry, there will be plenty more equally worthy alternatives on the same night. 5. Size is irrelevant. Honest. Check out some of the smaller venues. Intimacy and intensity go hand in hand in the art world. The Fringe is all about giving even the miniscule of productions a platform for their art. Embrace this, and you will be richly rewarded. Both the Iambic and Nightingale theatres have packed programmes of the best and most poignant small scale performances you can find anywhere. Two of my most memorable Fringe shows ever had less than ten people in the audience.

6. You don’t need to be rich. There are a large number of free, or cheap, events in the calendar. Laughing Horse are putting on scores of free comedy and theatre shows this year. For you Brightonphiles, The Old Market is showing Beach Party Animal, a free 20 minute portrait of Brighton eccentricity, in its brand new cinema all season. The Artists Open Houses trails offer a good chance to view and buy grass-roots arts and crafts, shown in some fabulous homes all over the city. Of course there are always the carnival-like Fringe City events, on 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th May, which bring a huge range of worldclass street performers to the New Road area to wow the crowds. 7. Keep an eye out for the Victorian style bathing machines placed strategically around the city. 8. Have fun. Even missing a show, amidst the chaos, can lead to a great anecdote. Wear a smile. Visit www.bn1magazine.co.uk for some Fringe Festival preview highlights and up to date information. Alternatively visit www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk for full event listings.

THE DIRT

WITH MARK EDE

OYSTERBAND

My lovely daughter Sophie visited me recently and being a stylish and creative young lady (she takes after her mother, clearly!) I took her to i gigi, the wonderfully stylish, beautifully presented, general store and Cafe near Brunswick Square in Hove. One Earl Grey tea and jammed scone (me) and a hot chocolate and piece of cake (Sophie) later and my wallet was over £17 pound, yes £17 pound(!) lighter! And I thought Teddy’s in Shoreham was outrageously expensive! And to think there is a recession on? You’d never know it at those prices. I’m taking Sophie to the Grand next time...it’s likely to be cheaper. PS. Mark Ede’s book ‘a grumpy man’s guide to tea and toast prices along the Sussex coast’ will be out in paperback soon. Or not, as the case may be. Anyhow, April is here and at BiGiAM towers, like for many of us Brightonians indeed, this the month of calm before the storm that is the month of May. May not only signals the start of summer, which itself brings the ‘blow ins’ (the tourists and day trippers etc.) but also, of course, the Great Escape (new music) festival as well as the Brighton Festival and it’s even more unruly cousin, the Fringe... But, it’s all good even if the trend seems to be the sunnier it gets, the harder we have to work. Talking of sun, our friends at Yellow Fish Music Group are setting up studios in Portugal, and possibly South of France too. At the moment it’s top secret but this is a gossip column right? So, it’s just gossip until you hear it officially right? Right. The idea is band members will all chip in to fly to some sunny spot, get away from local distractions and actually get something done. I think the swimming pool, sunshine and night life might

blow a hole in this theory but I suspect they’ll be quite a few takers anyway. Meanwhile, at the Lewes branch of the Fish, the odd rock god has been seen recording there as has a top five artist from ..er, France. Maybe there’s some kind of cultural exchange going on? Watch this space. Talking of Rock God’s, I see Roger Daltrey turned up unexpectedly to perform at our very own Ropetackle, Shoreham, as lead vocalist for the Simon (brother of Peter) Townsend’s band. For those readers who do not know who these people are - Who? I hear you ask. Yes, that’s right ‘The Who’ - then ask your Dad. Or Grandad. I’ve also just heard Gary Hutchins, of Hutchins guitars, has gone into the wine trade. Why? I don’t know I’m a column writer (allegedly) not a psychiatrist. But there are bottles of red, bottles of white, with labels featuring guitars and everything. I shall do some suitably in-depth research and report back accordingly. Meanwhile, well done local producer Al Scott whose album with June Tabor and the Oyster Band picked up four awards at the BBC folk awards. Apparently Al’s hangover is just about worn off. The ping pong table has disappeared from the Latest Music Bar and President Obama gives a present to David Cameron on the latest State visit. A co-incidence? I think not. Adele moves to Brighton, Jo Harman moves to London. A co-incidence? Er... probably.. Till next month, keep it steady, and follow us on twitter @bigiambrighton or info@bigiam.co.uk

BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK We’ve got the latest low-down on Brighton Fashion Week (May 30th–June 3rd) as it comes into its third year and is maturing into a truly legitimate point on the fashion calendar.

Brighton Fashion Week 2011 was such a success that we’re already hyped up and in a fashion frenzy for this year’s main event. Last year they brought all that is creative, innovative and exciting in talent to Brighton, showcasing the work of Tim Rhys-Evans, Masato, Jess Eaton, and Edward Finney to name just a few of the designers. Preparations are currently well under way and we’re promised an even bigger, better and more spectacularly theatrical five day fashion explosion across the city on Jubilee weekend, to see out the Brighton Festival with a very chic bang. Vanessa Austin Locke, Director of Marketing and Communication for the event told us that, “the event’s really growing into itself at the moment. It’s all been run on passion, love and determination for so long and now the national and even international fashion industry is beginning to sit up and take notice. It’s daunting, but exciting too. I love watching our designers and voluntary alumni flourish and go onto their chosen careers and show at LFW and things like that. And I love working with projects like DV8 Training, getting underprivileged kids involved and inspired, that’s a really important part of what we do because it’s all about regenerating and re-invigorating the industry round here and that of course spreads further field. That’s where I get my kicks, anyway.” A big attraction from last year and controversy, Jess Eaton, will be headlining this year’s BFW to showcase “a more grownup collection” form Roadkill Couture, which gives upcycling a whole new angle. Creating garments from animals that have died of natural causes and bringing us a show that is dramatic, dark and futuristic with a modern and urban feel. You can expect to see theatrical costumes crafted out of alpacas with dreadlocks – “If I can tan it in time”, says Jess – the fur of feral cats and even antique human bones. Jess has recently opened a shop on Preston Road where you can purchase her creations and bring the wild and wonderful into your own home. For more information visit www.eatonnott.co.uk.

THEATRE GUIDE For those of you deflated with the current lack of good television, or feeling a little bereft by Terry Garoghan’s last ever performance of Brighton! The Musical, than have no fear. There are plenty of theatrical minor miracles in April to see you through the hard times. The Old Market sees University of Chichester musical theatre students present Threepenny Opera, on Thursday 26 to Saturday 28. This reimaging of the Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s musical masterpiece, transplants it into modern-day Broken Britain. Set against the preparations for the Queen’s diamond jubilee, amongst a wave of discontent with the economic crisis, there lurks a most evil man with clearly no good intentions. Over at the Three and Ten they’re dreaming up a different one act comedy musical every show. Music Box take us on an epic musical adventure on Saturday 21. Nothing is impossible with these guys and their glorious blend of improvisation and comedy. This production has been regularly wowing audiences at the Three and Ten, proving that sometimes the only limit is your imagination. Life as a Tudor A-list celebrity was fraught with danger. A messy break-up could easily result in you losing your head, as Anne Boleyn lamentably found out. The Theatre Royal plays host to an English Touring Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe‘s

joint production, which aims to honestly retell the tale of the most intriguing of all British Queen Consorts. Painting a vivid picture of the treacherous nature of life In the Tudor royal court, this hugely successful touring production paints a fresh and different picture of the tragic Boleyn on Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th. Of course no-one really knows what the second wife of Henry VIII was getting up to in her spare time, but Howard Brenton’s play takes a thoroughly entertaining and witty stab at imagining what may have happened. Also at the Theatre Royal, on Wednesday 11th to Saturday 14th, is Alan Bennett’s wry treatise on problem neighbours: The Lady in the Van. Being standard Bennet fare, there is a bemused curiosity in the eccentric behaviour of the woman living at the bottom of the drive. Featuring the stellar talents of Nichola McAuliffe, as the enigmatic titular character, this is one of Bennett’s best works, and that’s really saying something. Family friendly puppet based antics come to the Pavilion Theatre, with the touching Sam Rose in the Shadows on Sunday 1st. A youngster is locked away from the outside world, spending his time fantasising about what fantastic adventures his father may be having. COMEDY CHRONICLE A multi-award winning conversational comedian with numerous television appearances under his belt Carl Donnelly is a rising star. Andrew Nicholls caught up with him ahead of his April 18th appearance at Live ‘N’ Laughing. What got you into comedy? I was always a fan of comedy but never had ambitions to try and forge any type of career out of it. I grew up watching people like Vic and Bob and Dave Allen and I think they influenced my sense of humour but it wasn’t until I went to a comedy club (The Banana Cabaret in Balham South London) in 2001 that a spark went off and I started thinking I would like to give it a go. From there it took about eighteen months of convincing myself and a life threatening illness to finally push me into it. The rest is history! Do you have a particular style, or do you try to be freer with your material? I suppose my style is conversational and anecdotal but I try and keep it as free as possible. A lot of my stories are never written down which is a conscious choice so that I never truly know how it should be worded. I know the start, middle and end but what happens in between can change on any given night. This also leads to me sometimes making myself laugh as I catch myself using words I’ve never said out loud etc, which even surprise me! Who would you say your influences were? I mentioned Dave Allen before who I think was a huge influence on me as a child. Coming from an Irish family, he was a popular choice in our house. His show was one of the few things I could watch with my family and we would all agree was good. Mitch Hedberg was probably the biggest influence on me since I started stand-up. He changed my entire view on what you could do as a comic. A huge regret of mine is not getting the chance to gig with him before he died. When you played Eastbourne a while back you had a heckler for most of the show; how do you deal with them? If I recall correctly, the heckler basically shouted out requests for me to do old bits of material. Normally this would be a compliment but I was doing an Edinburgh preview of all new material so physically couldn’t shoehorn in old stuff. I think I just pointed this out and we all saw the ridiculousness of the situation! You’ve had a number of TV appearances; is it nerve racking going from stage to screen?

It is far more nerve racking than a live gig because there are more factors out of your control. On stage, it is just me, a microphone and an audience all looking at me for the funnies. On television there are so many other people involved (producers, directors, camera crew etc) that you lose the control that a comedian’s ego relies on to feel totally comfortable. What has been your most embarrassing moment being a comedian? I don’t really get embarrassed when I’m onstage as it is when I feel at my most confident and in control. Also, I like when things go a little pear shaped so tend to embrace it and have fun rather than get embarrassed. The worst moment is the one just after you walk off stage after a terrible gig. I got booed off after twelve minutes at a Christmas Gig in December just gone and onstage was just frustrating but when I was off it was horrible! Just to clarify, it was a horrendous gig and not completely my fault that I was booed off. It was partially the fault of the 400 people out for their office Christmas parties! Love the hair and the style... What is thought behind this image? How did it come about? Despite me seemingly having a ‘look’, I put surprisingly little thought into my image. I tend to just get a haircut on a whim or buy new glasses and clothes when out and about. At no point have I ever consciously thought “I know what I need to buy today, some thick rimmed glasses and a pair of cuban heel boots”. It tends to be me buying what is on sale on asos.co.uk or picking up a pair of old woman’s glasses in Tesco’s opticians when I’m doing my big shop! You’ve got Live ‘N’ Laughing coming up which sees you headlining, but have you ever had to perform alongside anyone that was particularly difficult to follow? I’ve followed some of the best comedians in the world (Daniel Kitson, Stewart Lee etc) but I think as long as you have your own style and voice, the audience can adjust and enjoy you for what you do rather than compare you to each other. It’s much harder to follow acts that have a skill on top of stand-up like Abandoman who are an improvised rap group that are not only hilarious but also incredibly impressive. Going on after them guys with a selection of amusing life anecdotes can be quite a challenge! By Andrew Nicholls

Charlotte, the Forgotten Princess Princess Charlotte was born in 1796 and was the daughter of the Prince Regent, later George IV, and his cousin Caroline of Brunswick. The product of an unhappy and brief marriage, she grew up as an only child, kept apart from her mother after her parents’ separation. Although she had a lonely family life, Charlotte was much loved by the English people and was generally viewed fondly as a stubborn girl with a ‘will of bronze’ and who was prone to temper tantrums. This intimate exhibition features a collection of both official and popular portraits and objects, as well as royal costume, to give viewers an insight into Princess Charlotte’s life in the public eye of Regency Britain. In 1817, after only a year of marriage and at the age of 21, Charlotte died after giving birth to a stillborn son. Although the princess has since become relatively unknown as a historical figure, the amount of public shock and grief at the time of her death is thought to compare to that of Princess Diana. The sadness felt across England is displayed in the collection of massproduced commemorative items featured in the exhibition. Charlotte’s death led to a race among her uncles to produce a legitimate heir. If the princess and her son

had not died, it is likely that Queen Victoria, Charlotte’s cousin, would never have been born and 19th century Britain would have looked very different. By combining images and objects from the time, the exhibition explores

how the death of an often overlooked royal had such an impact on British life as well as wider implications for the mapping of modern history. Exhibition tickets are inclusive in the Pavilion tour, with adults costing £10 or

half price with proof of a Brighton and Hove address. The display is a fitting addition to the tour and a great way to find out more about the family of Brighton’s most notorious historical figure; the Prince Regent.

FILM Kirstie Howell’s passion for film led to her studying at the Brighton Film School. Since then, she worked as a runner on Brighton Rock, before becoming involved as an editor, sound recordist and sound designer on numerous and varied projects, such as music videos and short films. More high profile productions include Lynda La Plante’s Above Suspicion and Brad Pitt’s forthcoming zombie epic, World War Z. Here, Kirstie gives us an insight into the work of a sound recordist. Sound is an undervalued element of filmmaking, isn’t it? Sum up the importance of sound in film. I’m not sure if ‘undervalued’ is the right word, but yes, there is definitely a lack of knowledge with filmmakers as to the importance of getting ‘good sound’ on location. The pitfalls of this become apparent in post when you see how hard and expensive it is trying to rectify this. If sound is done well, it’s not noticed which I why I think it’s undervalued. If the sound is bad, it will immediately bring down the quality of the visual considerably. I understand that there’s much more to being a sound recordist than holding a boom microphone. So, describe this actual role and what else it entails. Also, what are some of the challenges you may encounter? The main challenges are working out where to put yourself on set. You need to be close enough to the actors to get a good recording, but you need to make sure you’re not blocking any light, not reflecting in any surface, which would make yourself visible in the frame and most importantly staying out of the frame itself! This can be tricky, as you have no way of knowing if you’re in frame or not, once the camera is rolling, so it’s all on your own judgement. Of course, sound plays an important part of post production, after a film has been shot. Tell me more about this. Aside from the musical element of a sound track, sound plays a huge part. For instance, noises can be added, exaggerated, built on, and manipulated to create any number of desired effects. It can also work to replace visuals. For instance, the sound of an oncoming car

can create panic for the burglar, or an over emphasized ticking clock can create a feeling of something imminent. What are the skills actually required for your work within sound? There are technical skills that are needed in terms of using the equipment itself, as well as familiarity with filming sets and how everything on them tends to work, and how you fit in to that mix of people doing different roles. What appeals to you about sound in film? For me, the appeal is being involved in the filmmaking process; sound being one area of that. It’s immensely satisfying when you successfully manage to get a good recording, and it all adds to the finished process so you can directly hear your work. Can you give me one or two examples of any problematic instances that you had to overcome on certain shoots? There are always a series of problems on every set that you go to. It can be overhead planes, a nearby barking dog or facial hair on a man, which can make the radio mics crackle. One recent short film I was on was set in a music shop. There were guitars hanging from the ceiling, so my boom had to be carefully weaved through the guitars without actually hitting any of them. Very tricky! Tell me how physical the work as a sound recordist is. It can be a very physical job. You’re on your feet all day, and if you’re out on location somewhere it can be cold, rainy, windy, and every other weather scenario. The hours can be very long and holding the boom itself can be very physical if it’s for a long length of time. You also can be travelling to five or six different places throughout the course of a day. All in all though, the fun of it outweighs anything else! Now in its sixth year, the Great Escape Festival returns to our city by the sea to showcase the greatest new bands you’ve barely heard of in venues across Brighton.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

MAXIMO PARK

Rock giants Maximo Park are the headline act for the event, and are joined by Africa Express Sound System in the prime slot at the Brighton Dome. They will be added to the list of significant acts that have played at the festival, including Mumford & Sons, Ed Sheeran, Groove Armada and last year’s headliner DJ Shadow. However, The Great Escape has never been about the big names. It’s the place to be for up-and-coming bands looking to get their break, as three thousand people from the music industry travel from around the world to flood into Brighton for the three-day celebration of music. There are a staggering 300 gigs played over the three days, with panel discussions, talks and other shenanigans also complementing the musical performances. Some notable bands included in the line-up are Alabama Shakes, Chew Lips, We Have Band, Mystery Jets, Lianne La Havas and College, fresh from their success that has followed from the release of the

celebrated Drive soundtrack. There are a few additions to the festivities this year, perhaps most interestingly the decision to host gigs that are suitable for 14-18 year-olds to attend: no doubt a novel and welcome update for the many teenagers out there looking to sample some of the latest musical talent this May. Scheduled for 10-12th May, The Great Escape has established itself as the warm-up gig for the rest of the festivals that the UK summer has become so engorged with. It’s a great way to discover some excellent new bands as well as catch-up with your cult favourites, and has become one of the primary events on the national festival calendar. It’s something Brightonians should be proud to host in our city and it’s definitely something people should be looking to get involved in. Keep up-to-date with all the coverage before, during and after The Great Escape in these pages and at www. bn1magazine.co.uk over the next few months! By Joel Windels
