Current Concepts in Gender-Affirming Medicine and Surgery This virtual program, presented by Dr. Devin O’Brien-Coon, will provide an overview of the current state of the art in healthcare for transgender patients, including information on surgical and medicals therapies. It will also go in to conversations about the need for cultural competence in making transgender and gender-diverse patients feel welcome in health care settings.

The objectives of this virtual course, presented by Dr. Scott Schwartz, are to understand the etiology of gender and sexual identity development, appreciate the implications of these identities in oral health, and learn how to manage the clinical environment for culturally competent care.

Installation of Officers and the Honoring of Life Members This hybrid meeting will take place at Ivar’s Salmon House or in your very own home! Join us for ‘State of the State’ with WSDA President, Dr. Ashley Ulmer, who will be discussing the efforts and accomplishments of the State in this recent unusual year. We will also honor our life members and officially install our newest elected Society Officers to their positions on the Executive Council.

About our presenter...

Dr. Ashley Ulmer graduated from University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2003. Upon graduation, she entered two separate residencies to advance her education in general dentistry. Dr. Ulmer has more than 15 years of experience in private practice dentistry and has volunteered at multiple clinics. She is a member in both the Spokane District Dental ociety and the Board of Directors for the Washington State Dental Association. Dr. Ashley Ulmer has assisted with the creation of the IDEA clinic and has helped provide treatment to patients who need it but are not able to afford it.

Opioids in Dentistry As dentists, it is expected that we can provide our patients with high quality pain relief for management of acute dental pain as well as during recovery from procedures. Opioids represent an important tool in achieving this goal. However, misuse of these medications can lead to dependence, addiction, overdose and even death. Through this hybrid continuing education program, Dr. Noah Letwin strives to improve our opioid prescribing practices to reduce these negative consequences, while continuing to provide our patients with high quality care.
