JOURNEY OUR

CONTINUES

Dear Friends, It is with great excitement that we announce the Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s 2014-15 season. Next season is going to be special in every way. Most importantly, I feel that we are once again able to raise the bar of artistic excellence. The Charleston Symphony is nationally reputed as a fine orchestra and many well-known artists and conductors are approaching us to collaborate based on this outstanding reputation. For our Masterworks series, we will feature internationally renowned pianist and MacArthur Award recipient, Jeremy Denk, and international opera superstar, Elizabeth Futral. We are also proud to present internationally celebrated guest conductors, including JoAnn Falletta, Gerard Schwarz, and Steven White. The Masterworks series will showcase blockbusters such as Debussy’s La Mer, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. I am also thrilled to have my own Masterworks conducting debut in October, leading the symphony in Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony and soloing in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Our Pops series will feature four diverse acts that promise to entertain every member of our audience. There is truly something for everyone! The series opens with acclaimed jazz singer, pianist and songwriter, Tony DeSare, performing favorite tunes by Billy Joel, Elton John and others. Charleston’s own “king of swing” Charlton Singleton will conduct this concert and both he and Tony are choosing some jazz favorites to include in the program! In December, due to popular demand, Albert-George Schram will return to conduct the Holiday Pops. I think I am most excited about our final two concerts, Classical Mystery Tour: Tribute to the Beatles and Project Trio. An eclectic cello, double bass and flute ensemble, Project Trio is receiving national critical acclaim for their innovative and creative performance styles, bridging classical music with pop, rock, bluegrass, and even beat-boxing. Our Chamber Orchestra series will continue to deliver intimate concerts in the historic Dock Street Theatre. The season opens with an exciting program titled “Bach and the Devil” just in time for Halloween. Other concerts in this series feature music by Vivaldi, Gluck, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and even selections by Mozart from the movie Amadeus. We will continue to feature our own musicians as soloists in this series and will also welcome back violinist, Michael Ludwig, to play Mozart’s Violin Concerto. Prepare to say WOW, I promise that this season will be one to remember. I am very excited about each of these programs, but most of all, I am so proud that we can take our orchestra to new heights through this artistic vision. Sincerely,

Yuriy Bekker, CSO Concertmaster and Acting Artistic Director
