A Note from the Artistic Director Thank you very much for spending a few hours with us and allowing us to present to you our passion and our art. When I first came to Charleston from New York nearly 6 years ago, I wasn’t aware of the extent of the theater in the area. There are a lot of opportunities for both young and experienced actors and directors to tread the planks. Shortly after arriving in town I found myself producing an original play called “Season to Season”. I met Mary Gould who not only ran the one theater space available to rent, but she and I shared a common dream to make Actor’s Equity contracts more readily available in Charleston. A year later I signed on as Artistic Director in an effort to help Mary and South of Broadway take a step closer to realizing its vision of becoming a member of the League of Resident Theaters (LORT), the first of its kind in South Carolina, and becoming a nationally recognized destination theater. You may ask, “What does it mean to be a LORT theater?” SOBTC is currently a proud member of the League of Charleston Theaters. Think of LORT as the League on a national level. Being a member of LORT would open SOBTC to nationally negotiated contracts with actors, directors, choreographers and scenic artists. We would be recognized by national publications and have a broader reach for funding. We would be able to entice known actors to appear on a Charleston stage with local actors. We would be in a position to attract Broadway and OFF Broadway writers to test their new material in Charleston, giving us all a chance to experience and perhaps influence a new play or musical before it hits the bright lights of Broadway. As a member of LORT, we would be able to provide local actors, writers, directors and scenic designers an avenue to shine in the national spotlight. And most importantly we would be able to extend our already strong reach into the community and provide many more educational and outreach programs. I know. It’s quite the dream. But one that could very easily be realized with the help and support of enthusiastic theater goers such as you. As Artistic Director at South of Broadway I can promise you, I will work tirelessly to make sure you receive professional quality theater each and every time you grace our audience. Thank you again and enjoy the show.

As I pondered this missive to our patrons, I was amazed to realize that this season is actually our 10th Anniversary here in Park Circle! A cascade of memories from the last ten years kaleidiscoped with unforgettable and defining moments ranging from my unusual upbringing and on through my entire artistic experience, so that the inevitability of my current work became so obvious; I thought you all might appreciate hearing some of the backstory. I was born in California, and by the time I was three years old, my missionary parents took me to grow up in Brazil. We didn’t have running water, indoor plumbing, no electricity (no TV) and only a few hours of transistor radio a month before the batteries ran out… and then we awaited a trip to the big city to buy more. Nevertheless, at the tender age of eleven, and having no experience in the performing arts, I decided to produce theatre. I settled on the classic short-story “The Open Window” by Saki, which I had read in my brother’s 12th grade literature book. With complete confidence I wrote the script, cast it, rehearsed it, starred in it, and presented it on Father’s Day along with a post show reception for the fathers. So began my artistic career! Following a couple of non-art career interruptions inspired by “Nancy Drew, Girl Detective”, and “Cherry Ames, Visiting Nurse” I fell desperately in love with Opera. So, at age 18 I returned to the U.S. to pursue a career in singing. Following studies at The American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, and thereafter at Rosary College’s School of Graduate Studies in Florence, Italy. I was privileged to study with internationally famous Baritone, Tito Gobbi. While living in Chicago, I became a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions and in 1983 decided it was time to head to NYC! During those years I performed upwards of twenty lead operatic roles and also appeared at The Edinburgh Festival as “La Carlotta” in “The Phantom of the Opera,” at Kennedy Center’s “Imagination Celebration Festival” in a one-woman show called “Operatunities: Mozart to Menotti!” and made concert tours to Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro in Brazil. In 1997, I was offered the Executive Directorship of The New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony (a Union orchestra presenting in Manhattan, NYC). I had just moved South where I met and married my husband, Brian, so I commuted between Charleston and NYC. A year of air travel and orchestra egos convinced me to return to my own devices. I established a vocal studio in downtown Charleston and conducted a variety of workshops with colleagues from NYC and LA. We attracted a group of Actors’ Equity professionals (of which I am a proud, card-carrying member). Six months later “Marigold Arts Development Inc.” was born and its professional theatre arm: South of Broadway Theatre Company was launched! The rest is history!
