Abstract Eesaa and Jannah wanted to make two different garments so it was decided to make a Romeo and Juliet costume. We did this in contrast with the Angels and Demons since it signifies two love birds with contrasting backgrounds. Key Words: Storytelling | Innovative textile | Romeo & Juliet | 2 Contrasting pieces | Romeo (Demonic) | Juliet (Angelic) | Incorporating wings

Drawing This is the final sketch of the design. It was decided to have 1 wing for each costume since it looks like the dresses are merged into one with the continuation of the feathers.

Garment Construction This includes the patterns that were made in accordance to the sizes of the models, which is ourselves, as well as planning for the amount of plastic fused feathers needed for each garment.

21

Tracing paper was used for making patterns for both garments. The cut-out was pinned to the models body to help with the proportions even more. 22

Wearable Tech AY19/20 | Angels & Demons

The patterns planned for the dress according to Jannah’s size, which was then tested with mock up fabric.

Planning for the amount of feathers needed for Jannah’s dress, using tracing paper. The Feathers pinned across the dress slowly become bigger as they descend. 24

We also planned for the amount of feathers needed for the wings that we were going to make.

The mock up garments that were according to our sizes. We also planned where the wires and arduino would go.

26

Wearable Tech AY19/20 | Angels & Demons

After adjusting the sizes from the mockup, Jannah stiched the garments using the final fabric. Jannah used the zipper foot on her sewing machine to sew the invisible zip on the dress. Angels & Demons | Wearable Tech AY19/20

27

As the velvet fabric was thin, Jannah used lining made out of old vests Jannah had. She also added the button detail to the front of Eesaa’s jacket.

28

Wearable Tech AY19/20 | Angels & Demons

Next, we worked on feathers. The feathers were originally a bit difficult since Eesaa And Jannah did not know how to go about the plastic fusing side of the feathers. Test pieces were made to get the best result of the feathers. Above are the end result of the feathers that they made.

Feathers This is the process of creating the plastic fused feathers for the garments, as well as out of foam to create the hige assymetrical wings.

The plastic bags are wrapped in baking paper on both sides. The iron is then heated and pressed on the baking paper to fuse multiple together. Jannah’s White feathers had holographic material in between the plastic. 32

With Eesaa’s feathers, they were cut-out on tracing paper. The Feathers are stuck on to the mannequin with pins across the model as they slowly become bigger as they descend. The feathers vary as they descend.

33

Next, Jannah sewed the feathers onto the garment for the final garments. Some of the plastic fused feathers were sewed using the sewing machine, but some were too tough that they had to be hand stiched. 34

While Jannah was sewing the garments together, Eesaa worked on making the wings that was going to be on each of our garments. He got some advice on making them by senior Hai Yen. There are wearable wings which have feathers that are made from industrial foam since they are sturdy. The foam is then attached to a think piece of fabric with Velcro’s attached to attach into the arm, simulating a moveable wingspan. Angels & Demons | Wearable Tech AY19/20

37

The final of the wings made out of foam by Eesaa, modelled by Jake. One would be in black and one would be white, one for each garment.

38

Wearable Tech AY19/20 | Angels & Demons

Jannah painted and spray pained the wings pure white so that the colour would match the dress. Jannah also created the feather sleeve out of fused plastic. Angels & Demons | Wearable Tech AY19/20

39

Coding This includes the technology for each garment which would be interacting with each other once the models touch each other’s hands. Videos of the technology working is available OSS.

When it came to coding, Eesaa and Jannah found it difficult since they hardly had any experience in that field. Tutorials on YouTube and by their friends are needed to ensure that they understand the concept of Arduino. The Arduino code as this is for how the electronics would work. As shown below, the colour of the RGB strip and brightness were adjusting to the parameters in the Arduino software. Adafruit Neopixel parameters as it was used to control the output of the RGB Strip. 42

Circuit Components: The circuit components were brought from ADAFRUIT and SimLim Tower. - RGB Strips - Photoresistor - 100 ohm resistor

- Lilypad Arduino - Li on Battery - 4 red LED

CCT Prototyping: The cct is shown in this page. Crocodile clips have been used to simulate the cct in working and physical form. An orange LED is used to emulate the RGB strip. This was to understand what resistors to use and where to place each major components. Angels & Demons | Wearable Tech AY19/20

43

The LED strips on Jannah’s garment and wing. The Electronics purpose are when the hands join, the lights in the garments light up across the wings and dress in an orange colour. To do this, photo resistors were placed in the palm of the garments as when there is no light, the RGB strip will light up the entire garment and the wings. 44

The planned placement of the wires inside of Jannah’s garment. The LED strip is also going to be at the bottom of Jannah’s dress.

3D Printing This includes the 3D printed armour and masks that we wanted to have for our garments, created in CAD by Eesaa. The masks are influenced by venetian masks of the Italian culture that are 3D printed using PLA silk win gold for the garment.
