Duality of the Market Site Area: 20000m
2
Time: July - November 2013 Type: Urban Design, Productive Landscape, Monument Location: Melbourne Tutor: Alan Pert Queen Victoria Market is sophisticated and is one of the significant sites in Melbourne. However the market is gradually becoming a dead site due to the lack of well planning but also unsustainale consumption of its past. The project aims to stop the decline of the Market, making such urban landmark continues to offer physical setting for trading and exchanging. In order to achieve this, the proposal need to respects for market history (cemetery). On the other hand, it reconsiders the programmatic typology (Urban Productive Landscape) by analysing large population growth and the land issues which would become the key factors that impact on future food production. Duality of the market was developed from the current layout of the market, dividing the site into two parts by moving and reconfiguring the existing sheds. One concentrates on food production and historical memories, another will be new a developed market place. In order to respect the featured layout of the market, "horizontal strip" is still applied to the site. Moerover, this division also enable the site to be reactivated and to fulfill social needs through such programmatic juxtapositions.

The market will serve as urban productive landscape in the furture, eliminating physical and conceputual distance between people and agriculture. But also function as new architetural typology for plenty of unsured site around future urban area. On the other hand, it reflects and escape from the density of the city, re-establishing the rememberance to the history of vanished Melbourne old cemetary

Machining Aesthetics - Folded Envelope Site Area: 495m

Time: July - November 2012 Type: Facade Design & Interior Renovation Location: Melbourne Tutor: Paul Loh & David Legget Machining Aesthetic is a studio that explores the area of digital application in design, and to fabricate the design into an aesthetic reality. By using implications of advanced digital knowledge into design, we believe we can unfold vast possibilities, bringing design to a new dimension that changes not only the design. but also the relationship between the users and the architecture itself. The process of the studio is a progressive study and step-bystep exploration of the world of machining aesthetics. This includes precedent study of a project, extracting the neccesary defining moments of the precedent and to translate that into apiece of touchstone. The major part of this studio is the interior modification and facade design for Craft Victoria along Flinders Lane. The spatial and material research conducted before hand will form the basis of the design concept leading to the building proposal.

Initial Concept & Design Process
Distorted Space
Based Geometry Shape
Responsive Factor
Light & Shadow
From the analysis, we have gathered that the overall form concept and the complexity of the environmental skin are all derived from basic geometry shapes. The skin variation all ended up having light and shadow effects which corresponds to the program composition in the building. In the end, the environmental factor acts one of the main point in the facade. To achieve so, responsive traits are implemented into the facade of the building

The composition of the folding is complex. The entire folded system is consisting of folded ceiling, folded partition, folded floor as well external folded wall that located at both sides of the folded interior. In fact, the relationships between these components are blurring which is one of our design strategies. There is no specific boundary between each component. The function of folded ceiling, partitions, floor and external walls can be translated with each others.

The programs of the building can be classified into 3 types– Public, Semi-Private and Private Space. Public spaces such as gallery, atrium, library and cafeteria occupy the most area as we want visitors fully engage with the building. The private space such as office is put in the rear of the building to demonstrate a level of privacy. The Semi-private space such as archive and workshop are near public spaces. Visitors therefore could see semi-private but could not access it. On the other hand, rooftop level is built for additional exhibitionor public events.

This gives the facade a gradient and it interacts more with the urban context

Fabricating The Joint One of the main component of the facade, which is the node joints that hold each mullions at different angles. The node joint is modelled in a 3D software, and using a 3D printer to make the joint out. The node joint are segmented into a series of pieces, each being connected with finger joints due to the dimension restraint of the printer 1
The node joint are connected to the steel mullions and uses screw to hold them together. The steel plate are welded into the slots of the mullions.

Time: March - June 2012 Type: Mixed-Use Location: Melbourne Tutor: Ivan Rejavic The site is situated at the bounday of Melbourne city, bounded by Elizabeth St, Queen St, Latrobe St and Lt Latrobe St.The site of rectangular shape, 200m by 100m.The site is of easy access to public transport. There are three tram stations around it, two on Latrobe St and one on Elizabeth St. And Melbourne Central station is just opposite to the site. The orientation of the site is almost north-south, 24 degree to North-South axis. The site is currently used for office and small retail shop. The site is sloping down from the west to the west, with a level change of 9 meters. Our studio is going to accommodate a highrise building with a height of 200 meters, of mixed use such as residential, commercial, office and entertainment. The project is for futures, under which circumentance, the urban devlopment in the coming decades should be taken into consideration. The design is not registrated by the height. On the contrary, we try to achieve a vertical city, which allows people to have daily life in such urban engine.

Currently, Melbourne CBD is full of commercial atmosphere. There are lots of apartments, shopping centres and offices but lack of artistic atmosphere. There are lots of street artists whose hven't been formally treated. The main strateges of the project is to create a place for their imagination. The "Arts: for this building is a key. Also throughout integrating other elements (commercial, residential, offices hotel...), the building will become another big urban complex in Melbourne CBD, attracting either local or foreign people to com.

Rotate Traditional Idea
Public Serving Public & Private Area
Conventional Mix-Used building usually put public program at street level and profit-making towers above. However, with the growth of humans’ living standars, arts would be entral point of our life. We therefore break the conventional layout of mixused building and place culture physically and spiritually at the project’s center and serves for Prive & public spaces

The "Doll" Theatre Site Area: 737m

Time: March - June 2011 Type: Theatre, Culture Location: Melbourne Tutor: Toby Reed "The summer of the seventeenth doll” is an Australian theatre classic and set a Carlton terrace house at intercals over a period of seventeen years - 1945 to 1953. This project is to design a theatre for performance of such play. The story of the pay revolves around the lives of the cane-cutter Roo and Barney and their girfriends - Barnaids Olive, Nancy and Pearl. Each year th men spend five months cane-cutting off-season, living with the women but this arrangement is upset during the seventheenth year. The Play Adresses wide and cross cultural themes, including the replacement of oldorders by new thngs; resistance to change; the search for happiness; the loss of idealism and the concept of “mateship” This theatre must rely on one of those ideas in the play. How we translate those ideas architecturally is the main challenge of the project.
