The Vaasa region is located on the west coast, comfortably situated in the middle of Finland. The region is a slice of Ostrobothnia at its finest and can be reached by land, sea or plane. The largest city in the region is Vaasa. On a passenger number basis, Vaasa airport is the sixth busiest in Finland with around 320,000 passengers a year. There are regular flights from Vaasa to Helsinki and Stockholm. (*)

The railway station is in the very centre of the city, and from Helsinki by the fast Pendolino train the journey takes approximately 4 hours. The regional train from Seinäjoki also stops in Isokyrö, Tervajoki and Laihia, while the Pendolino stops in Isokyrö. On the Swedish side of the Kvarken, only 80 km from Vaasa as the crow flies, lies the capital of Västerbotten, Umeå. The ferry route is operated all year round by Wasaline, a company owned jointly by the cities of Vaasa and Umeå.

DO & SEE The Vaasa region, located at the narrowest point of the Kvarken, has many faces. The region offers modern urban culture, a relaxed country village atmosphere, and glorious seascapes. A large stretch of the archipelago has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. EVENTS Even though the distances are short, there are large variations in the scenery. The mother tongue of the locals also varies! Entrepreneurship and diligence unite the entire region. Take your pick of festivals, traditional events, markets, concerts, open-air dances and much more. Local events are arranged to celebrate almost anything and everything. For example, Närpes has a tomato festival while Laihia, an area reputed to have stingy inhabitants, has its own special carnival. The Korsholm Music Festival and the Vaasa Choir Festival are always among the most popular summer happenings.

This year, however, they will have to compete with the Summer Services of the Conservative Laestadians, which will take place in Söderfjärden from June 26–29. The Summer Services event is the largest spiritual gathering in the Nordic countries, and is expected to attract some 75,000 visitors. HIGH-QUALITY ART In Vaasa there are two theatres; the Vaasa Kaupunginteatteri, which is the Finnish city theatre (see 26), and the Wasa Teater, the Swedish regional theatre. The program of the City orchestra is often ambitious and even provocative. Thanks to active associations and enthusiastic amateurs, you can enjoy interesting plays and music performances all across the region, especially in summer. Performances are given in Finnish or Swedish. The largest collections of visual arts are presented in Vaasa at the Ostrobothnian museum, Tikanoja museum and the Kuntsi museum of modern art (see 24). If you’re interested in

visual arts, we also recommend Stundars, and the new culture and congress centre Mittistan in Närpes. FOR CHILDREN AND GROWN-UPS Here, memorable moments can be had from even the smallest of things. Inspiring pieces of art or performances, nicknacks from the market, warm sand under your feet, a white-tailed eagle soaring towards the horizon, the joy on the faces of children in the amusement park, or splashing around in the water park; all will bring a smile to your face (see 25). And why should a herring caught from Replot Bridge, the longest bridge in Finland, be a less victorious catch than a blue marlin in the Caribbean? LIVING HISTORY History is strongly present, almost tangible here. In ancient times, a meteorite left its huge imprint on the earth for all eternity, while ancient glaciers changed the landscape and created the magnificent archipelago in the Kvarken.

The Tales of Ensign Stål come to life again in the battlefields where the Swedish-Finnish army fought the Russian soldiers two hundred years ago. At one of the oldest industrial facilities in Finland, the Kimo Iron Works museum, you can try your hand at blacksmith skills that date back 300 years. In the Stundars museum village you can travel back in time. Get to know schoolgoing, the lives of craftsmen and the country shop’s goods from the old days. SHOP! In the compact city centre of Vaasa there are numerous stores and shopping centres. And if it’s shopping that you want, there are also a number of open air markets and flea markets to visit around the region. One of the largest is the 18th century market in Isokyrö, held on the second weekend in August.

TAKE A TRIP TO SWEDEN! If you have the time, you can visit two countries on one trip. On the other side of the Kvarken, only four hours by ferry, the capital of Västerbotten, Umeå (see 27), and the High Coast of Sweden await. The route passes through the scenic Kvarken archipelago. The Vaasa-Umeå ferry route is Finland’s northernmost international sea crossing, and it operates once or twice a day all year round, with few exceptions. You can also go on a nice day cruise to Umeå. There is bus transport from Holmsund port. You have about 5 h to spend in the city.

All over Ostrobothnia you will also find many popular open-air dancing places, folk parks and entertainment centres, where you can take your turn on the dance floor accompanied by a live band.

STAY In the Vaasa region you can stay at good quality hotels, rent a cottage, or park your mobile home or caravan at one of the many camping sites. Or maybe you prefer a spa hotel by the sea shore, a city centre hotel with shopping nearby, or an indulgent suite with your very own sauna.

Every region has its characteristic tastes and aromas. The Vaasa region is famous for freshly smoked Baltic herring, sourdough bread made by the best bakery in Finland, and tasty dumpling soup served in the refreshing summer air. As a dessert you might try a pannacotta made with sea buckthorn and cream, a sugar donut or a delicate pastry with Finnish coffee. KVARKEN ARCHIPELAGO Barren beauty and a fishing paradise The west coast offers the visitor a broad spectrum of experiences, which you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find elsewhere. The Gulf of Bothnia between Finland and Sweden is a mix of barren, arctic beauty and bays with fluttering birdlife.

The locals greatly enjoy the archipelago. The shoreline consisting of thousands of islets and islands is scattered with summer cottages and small saunas. Not surprisingly, boating is very popular. If you are into fishing, the area is known for its abundance of pike. For example, the wide bays by the Replot Bridge and between other large islands are very rocky, but also rich in fish. Why not try herring angling from the Replot Bridge in springtime? Ice-hole fishing for perch is also a popular winter pastime along the coastline. Get to know the coastline by bike, boat, or kayak; enjoy hiking, fishing or bird watching; there is something for everyone. In winter there is snowmobiling and dog sleighing; you can ice skate, ski and, for the brave, one can take a dip in a hole in the ice. If the conditions allow, you can even drive your own car to some islands using roads over the ice. CULTURAL TREATS The city is also known for its wide and versatile cultural offering. There are even two theatres; one for Finnish language and the other for Swedish language performances. The city’s galleries and art museums offer true gems for visual art lovers. The home venue of the Vaasa City Orchestra is the beautiful great hall in the City hall. The annual chamber and choir music festivals are also renowned for their high standard performances (see 24, 26). FOR CHILDREN BIG AND SMALL In Vaasa there are several beaches to choose from for eager swimmers and sun-worshippers, right outside the city centre. Should you find the weather cold, summer always presides at Spa Tropiclandia (see 25)!

In summer, the Wasalandia amusement park (see 25) is an attraction for families with small children. The tickets are among the most affordable in Finland. It is easy to get there from the city centre by riding the Lilliputti city train. GREAT SHOPPING In the compact city centre of Vaasa there are numerous stores and two shopping centres, located either side of the market square (see 25). Chain stores lie side by side with trendy interior decoration shops, small cozy boutiques and the traditional covered market. Another large cluster of shops is located in Kivihaka, towards Kokkola. In Kivihaka you will find large markets, furniture shops, home electronics and various hardware stores – loved especially by handy dads. There is also a third shopping centre, the GW Galleria.

KORSHOLM The largest island municipality in Finland The municipality of Korsholm spans an impressive area of 3600 km2, three quarters of which is water. Not to worry! The land uplift in the area is fast enough for the land mass to increase by some 20 hectares a year.

LIVE WELL AND PROSPER! The number of inhabitants is close to 20,000 and is steadily growing. Korsholm offers some of the nicest living and outdoor environments in the country. For example, the village of Solf has been crowned the best housing area in Finland, while Hankmo was judged Ostrobothnia’s village of the year. On top of that, Korsholm came in second place in a 2014 survey to find where the healthiest people in Finland live.

Thanks to the extensive archipelago, the municipality can boast of no less than 1600 km of coastline. In the archipelago you can hike along well-marked trails, go kayaking, sail, go on a cruise, fish, swim and enjoy life in a holiday cottage. Enjoy the barren but beautiful nature, old villages, fishing harbours and shores.

KORSHOLM HAS IT ALL Korsholm is multifaceted. There is the archipelago, the sea and landscapes, urban townships and industrial growth, traditional village life and green fields.

THE GATEWAY TO THE WORLD HERITAGE The Korsholm archipelago accounts for 70% of the Kvarken World Heritage site. The largest islands in the archipelago are Replot and Björköby. The longest bridge in Finland – the Replot Bridge – takes you there. The bridge, completed in 1997, is more than one kilometre long, 1045 m to be precise.

27.6 ROWING THE MAIL (POSTRODDEN) Rowing the mail is an annual traditional event, attracting a large group of spectators in Svedjehamn. The mail transport over the Kvarken commenced in 1617 and continued for nearly 200 years. The procession travels to Holmön in Sweden by rowing boats and old time sailing vessels. The event starts in Sweden every other year.

30.7-6.8 KORSHOLM MUSIC FESTVAL Korsholm Music Festival has established itself as an international chamber music event of very high standard. The event is financed in part by grants from the Korsholm municipality, the city of Vaasa and the Ministry of Education. The Music Festival is also sponsored by some hundred regional businesses. The opening concert of the festival is traditionally held in the beautiful Korsholm Church. (see 24)

THE KVARKEN ARCHIPELAGO Korsholm features numerous islands and islets, as well as more than its share of rocks. Most are located in the UNESCO World Heritage site. THE REPLOT BRIDGE The longest bridge in Finland serves more than 2000 island inhabitants on a daily basis, also making it easy for visitors to gain access to the archipelago. STUNDARS MUSEUM VILLAGE AND CULTURE CENTRE Stundars museum and culture centre in Solf is one of the largest open-air museums in Finland. Here you will find an entire village of handicraft workshops, a bakery, a school and a manor. (see 24) www.stundars.fi THE METEORITE CRATER IN SÖDERFJÄRDEN A large rock fell from space 520 million years ago, resulting in the most beautiful meteorite crater in Finland. At the visitors’ centre there is also an observatory and a bird-watching tower. www.meteoria.fi

The impressive pylons span 82 m, and under the bridge vessels of up to 26 m in height may pass. Svedjehamn in Björköby is the gateway to the world heritage site. Further out in the Kvarken, many interesting islands await, including Norrskär, Ritgrund, Maraskär and Valsörarna. There are several service providers offering guided cruises in the Kvarken archipelago, both scheduled sailings and private charters. PEEK INTO THE PAST The meteorite crater in Söderfjärden was formed 520 million years ago. The wide circular field is one of the most remarkable geologic sights in Finland. The history of the area is presented in the Meteoria visitors’ centre located in the centre of the crater.

The Söderfjärden is also an important resting place for our largest migratory birds. In the autumn thousands of cranes take refuge here, as do migrating swans.

FEAST ON FRESH FISH Along the coast and in the archipelago you will find many cozy summer restaurants, cafés and terraces where visitors and holiday makers can enjoy delicious local dishes. A steaming hot salmon or whitefish soup is a classic! Also be on the lookout for what local fishermen have to offer. Freshly smoked perch or Baltic herring are irresistible treats.

ENJOY YOURSELF AND RELAX ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER KYRÖNJOKI Isokyrö is rich in history. The Old Church, built in 1304, is a popular attraction and features some unique murals. Concerts are held in the church during the summer. In Isokyrö you will also find the oldest suspension bridge in Finland, grave sites from the Bronze Age, and the mysterious sacrificial spring in the swamps of Leväluhta. The rich history is also celebrated by the annual 18th century market in August, which gathers handicraftsmen and visitors from all over Finland. The Sirpistä puimuriin event at the end of July attracts those interested in old agricultural machines.

18TH CENTURY MARKET 7–9.8 Handicraft enthusiasts gather during the second week of August by the Old Church in Isokyrö. Music, work demonstrations, carriage rides, traditional meals. Some 150 vendors will attend. www.1700-lmarkkinat.net KALLIOJÄRVI ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE AND SFC LUKKUHAKA A popular entertainment centre with open-air dances, restaurants, beach, mini-golf and cottages for rent. 18th century market

The Kalliojärvi entertainment centre has become one of the most popular in Ostrobothnia. In addition to the many restaurants and dance halls, there are plenty of cottages for rent, as well as a first class caravan park, SF-Caravan Lukkuhaka, winner of the Best Caravan Site title in 2010. Pukkilansaari Island in the middle of the River Kyrönjoki also offers dancing to live bands in summertime. You get there by cable ferry. The river offers great opportunities for kayaking, for beginners and experienced white-water rafters alike. The bridges crossing the river also extend the choice of scenic cycling and jogging trails. There is also an extensive network of marked hiking trails that extend for some 130 km in and around Isokyrö, Vähäkyrö and Laihia.

ORISBERG RECREATION CENTRE Orisberg by Kotilammi Lake is part of the nationally significant cultural scene. This is where Sibelius got engaged, Topelius attended confirmation school, and Kekkonen went for walks in the forest. Nowadays, Orisberg is a recreation centre maintained by Kansan Raamattuseura, Logos Ministries of Finland. The are numerous programmes and courses held here, especially in summer. www.orisberg.fi THE OLD CHURCH A single-nave church in grey granite from 1304. Note especially the 114 murals from the 1560s. TERVAJOKI CAR SALES In Tervajoki thousands of cars are sold each year to people from all over Finland. The largest dealers are Rinta-Joupin Autoliike Oy and Arton Auto Oy.

LAIHIA Stingy with style On the way between Vaasa and Seinäjoki you will find Laihia. This 8000 inhabitant town is known all over Finland for one thing: stinginess.

Laihia has a lively town centre, surrounded by billowing, fertile fields. The traditional Ostrobothnian farms with their two storey main buildings are a picturesque addition to the local scenery. In Laihia you will also find the largest collection of relics in Finland, a total of 4356. But the town’s reputation centres around one thing – being stingy! Even though being stingy (in Finnish ’nuukuus’) defines Laihia, the ideas and the exaggerative way of thinking – as well as the dialect – represent the Southern parts of Ostrobothnia. The “Empire” of Laihia has its very own currency, the stretched Laihia euro. You can exchange currency at the Municipal oﬃce info desk (Laihiantie 50,1st floor).

In Laihia visitors are also welcomed by rural tourism services and handicraft workshops. The Hotel Route, located on the Tampereentie road, offers accommodation. (www.hotelliroute.fi) GENEROUS WITH HOSPITALITY Although the Laihia locals are, like the Scots, reputed to be frugal, there is no truth to the tale that the mayor was fired for being over lavish when saying to arriving guests: “A thousand thanks for coming.” You are all hugely welcome to Laihia!

THE CAPTAIN’S HOUSE IN HULMI PARK The sheltered park and the building is all that remains of the reserve company’s 10th garrison of the army of autonomous Finland, active in Hulmi 1881–1900. The facilities in the building are rented for conferences and parties.

Seafaring and fishing have always been an important part of everyday life for the people of Malax. More than 87% of the 5500 inhabitants in Malax speak Swedish as their mother tongue. Between the folk park and the holiday village you will find the Kvarken boat museum. The museum is the work of volunteers, and has the largest collection of utility boats in the Nordic countries. There are nearly 100 boats and 130 motors featured in the 15 buildings of this historically valuable setting. REACH THE ISLAND IDYLL BY CABLE FERRY Outside Malax you will find Bergö, an idyllic village with some 500 permanent residents. You will get to the island in less than ten minutes by the cable ferry operating 24/7 all year round. The beautiful scenery can be enjoyed along the well marked nature trail. The long history of the village is presented at the Bergö local arts-and-crafts museum. In Bergö there is also a nice beach with sauna, as well as riding stables, where you can enjoy exploring the area on horseback.

In Korsnäs entrepreneurship is a way of life. Around half of the some 2200 inhabitants here work in family businesses. In 2015, the Swedish-speaking municipality of Korsnäs will become oﬃcially bilingual. Around 87 % of the population speak Swedish as their mother tongue, just over 3 % Finnish, and nearly 10 % other languages. WELCOME TO THE VILLAGE The village of Korsnäs offers many picturesque and interesting sights; the Vicarage museum, the beautiful church, and the local arts-and-crafts museum, where you can see the unique Korsnäs sweaters and a large collection of objects related to seal hunting. At the local arts-and-crafts museum, story-telling nights and handicraft days for children and youngsters are arranged in summer. The Korsnäs week is arranged 29.6–5.7. On 8.8 there is a big market, and on 9.8 the world natural heritage site is celebrated.

KORSNÄS CHURCH An open and bright cruciform church from the 1830s, designed by C.L. Engel. The altar and the altarpiece are located in the middle of the church. The church has excellent acoustics and is often used as a concert venue. KORSNÄS SWEATERS The great treasure of the arts-and-crafts museum is the collection of Korsnäs sweaters. The technique combines knitting and crocheting in a unique way, using bright colours and lush patterns. Up to three persons could form a ring to knit on the same sweater.

SUMMER TRIP TO HARRSTRÖM Harrström is a small village by the sea, with a large natural harbour, a nice beach and the picturesque Åbacka museum bridge crossing the Harvungån River. Near the harbour you will find the fisherman’s lodge, where the everyday life of a typical fisherman’s family at the turn of the 20th century is recreated. On the Kvarnbacken hill, Harrström’s highest point, stand two windmills. The large windmill from the 1840s remains in its original location, and is one of the largest in Finland. VISIT MOLPE The former fishing village of Molpe has a lovely beach and the Molpe Paviljong entertainment centre. The popular StrandMölle restaurant (see 30) offers specialities from the Kvarken area. We also recommend a guided cruise in the Kvarken World Heritage site to Molpehällorna, a chain of low-lying islands in the outer archipelago of Molpe.

THE KVARNBACKEN WINDMILLS The largest functional windmill in Finland from the 1840s. HARRSTRÖM NATURAL HARBOUR A 300-metre-long natural harbour with many idyllic boat sheds, and a nice beach with amenities. The harbour is classified as a valuable cultural landscape. WORLD HERITAGE TRIP TO THE MOLPEHÄLLORNA NATURE STATION Book a cruise and enjoy the scenic archipelago! From 1668 to 1808, the first lighthouse beacon (“fyrbåk” in Swedish) in the Gulf of Bothnia was located on the island. The nature trail leads to a reproduction of the beacon constructed in 2001, and a memorial plaque.

Another thing which characterizes Närpes is the ancient Swedish dialect spoken here, reminiscent of Norwegian and Icelandic. Even though 85.5% are native Swedish speakers, Finnish and English are also widely spoken. In fact there are about 30 languages spoken here. A SHORELINE OF 700 KM AND A COMPACT CITY CENTRE Närpes is proud of its old rural and maritime cultural heritage. Along the shoreline, which includes many bays and which stretches for more than 700 km, are several, picturesque marinas with red fishing huts and beaches where you can go for a swim. pate in other events. Check out the art hall, too, where there are exhibitions by various artists. In the village of Rangsby you will find Fagerö Folk Park, where open-air dances with different themes are held in summer. In Vörå there are excellent opportunities for sports and exercise all year round. Hike on the islands of the archipelago, play golf, go horse riding, enjoy the beach, or if you prefer to swim indoors, the pools of Norrvalla await. In winter there are tracks for cross-country skiing through varied terrain. THREE GREAT PUBLIC EVENTS – AND A FEW MORE In Vörå people are skiing, riding bikes and running – in abundance and great spirits! BotniaVasan Ski is an international cross-country race, not only for top-level sportsmen but also for those simply enjoying the exercise. The 52 km race will be held this year on Feb. 8 and is part of the Finnish Skiing Association’s mass ranking system. It is also a seeding event for the Vasaloppet race.

The BotniaCycling bike race tours the Ostrobothnian scenery and is held on the last weekend in July. This year marks the 9th time it has been held. The race has two routes, 106 and 67 km, the longer featuring men and women classes for both competition and recreational cyclists. The BotniaRun is a cross-country race for both competing sportsmen and stay-fit enthusiasts. This year the race will be run on 19.9. The route goes along quiet trails, gravel roads and forest tracks along a hilly and scenic terrain. There are separate classes for young people, veterans and Nordic walkers. Other notable events attracting thousands of visitors are the Norrvalla Summer Festival and the Vörå Days held during the week commencing 29.6.

THE ENSIGN STÅL CENTRE The Centre commemorates the battle in Oravais during the Finnish War of 1808-09. Artifacts from the battle, buildings and the battlefield itself are depicted. The regiment’s weapon drills bring history to life complete with periodic uniforms and muskets. www.oravais1808.fi ARCHIPELAGO FARM VARPPI Reservations can be made all year round at Varppi for meetings, family gatherings and trips. You can include meals, conference services, accommodation, archipelago cruises, sauna baths and guided tours in the programme. The summer café is open from Midsummer until the middle of August. KIMO IRON WORKS The iron works museum is located in an iron storage facility which dates back to 1763.
