LEX articles Behind the scenes When sitting in class, hopefully paying close attention to what the man or woman in front of the classroom has to say, we, as students, think as little as possible about what happens behind the scenes of our own education. This all changes when we find something we do not agree with or are unhappy about. When we do not get out grades back in time, when we think the quality of the lectures is not up to standard or our project group falls apart and noone seems to notice. At this point we go running to our lecturers or coordinators to file piles of complaints. And I am not even talking about how we spread our sense of disappointment and anger amongst our peers, yet. After about a week we have forgotten all about our dissatisfaction and move on until a new issue arises. What you should know, is that there is a small group of students that continues to fight for a better education even when matters seem less pressing to others at that point in time. This group is called the Opleidingscommissie, or, loosely translated, the Course Specific Student Committee. I have been a member of this committee for two years now. In my second year I found some things I did not agree with and wanted to turn this feeling around into something positive. I spoke to Peer Stoop about this and he introduced me to the committee. They were happy to have me since I was the first member from the English stream of VTM/LM. It has been over two years and unfortunately I am still the only one. This might be because of the low awareness about the Course Specific Student Committee, I hope to change that bit by bit and that this article will help my cause. So what does this committee do exactly? For starters we meet at least four times a year, every period is followed by a meeting. Our chairwoman Els Reijnen sets up an agenda with points that school wants us to focus on. This includes the outcomes of the period evaluations that we all fill out at the end of every period. Often there are some documents we need to read through before meeting, such as rules and regulations for passing certain years, also known as traffic lights. After all that has been dealt with, we discuss all issues we see around us and things we would like to see changed within the education. Yes, they actually do something with our input. Not only school takes us seriously, but we have an important role from national point of view as well. It is mandatory for every course to have a Course Specific Student Committee. We have even played an important role in the reaccreditation that took place in 2012. I feel that as students we should not just undergo our education but should be active participants in the shaping of it. So next time you have the feeling you are not getting enough value for your money, go find a member of the committee or even better; join. The creative economy and Inholland We are studying at a university of applied sciences. This means that there should be a good balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills taught. It also means that the school needs a very close link to the professional field. The field Inholland wants to particularly focus on is the creative economy. The creative economy is one of the Dutch top sectors. Being a part of the Top Sector Policy means that the government has decided this industry is so important, they want to invest money into it in order for the industry to grow and develop. The creative economy is brought down to three different categories; arts, media and entertainment and the creative business services. Arts needs little explanation. Media and entertainment is quite an obvious one as well, it includes all kinds media such as television and print media. The biggest example of a creative business service is advertising. Although the creative economy is split up in three categories, the industry is all but black and white. The government might scale an events company as a creative business service, I can think of reasons why they should be in media and entertainment. The same goes for photography. In my opinion it is an arts form that is used in media and entertainment but a freelance photographer provides a creative business service. The fifty shades of grey of the creative economy can also be seen in the way it works and behaves. The creative economy is nothing if not flexible. Creativity has no watch. Work is not done between 9 am and 6 pm. Entrepreneurs might be out of work for a month and work the next couple of months 16 hours a day. Since the creative economy mainly exists out of one-man businesses (84% of the creative economy of the Amsterdam area), another way in which the flexibility is expressed, is the way of networking. It is often seen that one entrepreneur is working on three different projects with three different parties at the same time. Examples of places that enable such work forms are creative hotspots. All over Amsterdam these hotspots can be found; Volkskrant Gebouw at the Wibautstraat, Kunststad at the NDSM-Werf, MuzyQ in east, ACTA in West. These are all big, and often old, buildings that have been taken over by corporations that fix up the buildings and build basic studios in them which they then rent out to entrepreneurs. For a reasonable price I might add. At this point in time we only really get in touch with the creative economy when we choose the minor Creative Industry. This is about to change thanks to the Handshake initiative. Some may have already heard about Handshake or have even already participated in a Handshake event. The main goal of Handshake is to bring Inholland and its students and the creative economy closer together. Do you envision yourself as part of the creative economy one day? Stay tuned, more about Handshake and their events and initiatives will follow.

Get the creativity flowing School… for some the place where their creativity goes to die. With its concrete walls and merely deep fried dishes. The colours orange and pink have long ceased to have any inspiring influence on us. A piano sits in the hall just outside the Leisure Lobby to be violated by the one-time piano lesson-takers and tone deaf. A graffitied wall opposite of it, makes us believe in a far past time, anarchy ruled the school. In reality, the board probably paid a middle-aged artist to “funk up” the VTM/LM wing. “That will do them good!”, they must have thought. Yet, we are constantly asked to innovate. We are the next generation! We should be more than able to come up with a million ideas to change the world for the better. To live up to these enormous standards (yes, we can!), we need to leave our comforting and safe school and explore our options. Was spotting a bunny rabbit just outside the window the highlight of your school week? Go check out one of these great creative locations. More will follow! Roest Café Roest is situated in Amsterdam East. Were you to follow your first instinct, you would not enter Roest. Because, as the name (translated; rust) suggests, the building looks like it could collapse any day now. Believe me, it is worth taking the risk. Take a seat in one of the chesterfield couches and be inspired by the many old television sets or other old stuff. Check out their website for events. http://www.amsterdamroest.nl/

Noorderlicht A 15 minute ferry ride from central station will bring you to the NDSM-Werf. This old dockyard has traded its ships and rough labourers for a whole bunch of creative entrepreneurs. They have come together in a huge industrial warehouse, where they were all given a certain amount of space to create their own studio or office. With success. Stroll around what is now called Kunststad (Art City) and let yourself be inspired by the absolute mess that is called the NDSM-Werf. Finish off with a fruitful brainstorm meeting at Noorderlicht. One of the cafes that can be found in this area. Noorderlicht is build up out of corrugated plastic which makes it a unique and very light place to be. Try out the dropshot tea, a Dutch delight. I have made it a tradition to take commissioning clients here to brainstorm. Especially interesting for the minor students! http://www.noorderlichtcafe.nl/ Do you want to share one of your favourite creative hotspots? Send me an email: 498611@student.inholland.nl

Coolest leisure part times We learn a lot hanging out in class. The lecturers in front of the classroom know what they are talking about and manage to provide us with more information we might be able to pick up in one sitting. Still, most of use learn best by doing. Implementing the knowledge we gained in school, will help the information to stick. Some of us do this by finding a part time job that has a close connection to our studies. In this clip Leonie Klinkenberg, fourth year LM, tells about her part time job at Tobacco Theater in Amsterdam. What does her job entail and how did she manage to get this job? Watch the clip to find out.

MFW14 Let me share with you a tale. A tale of a mystical realm known as the Media Future Week (MFW). A place beyond belief where everyone’s wildest dreams become reality. All thanks to the magic generally accepted by the names Technology and Innovation. I find it hard to define what the MFW is exactly. It is an event, definitely. Is it a congress? Possibly but in a way that word seems, how shall I say it, too “grey suit” for it. It is much more colourful than that. I like to see it as an annual excellence event for media-related HBO students. That more or less sums it up, it is not very catchy, though. Because of my connection to LEX, I was asked to attend this event together with eight other Inholland students. Three of which are VTM/LM students. With the nine of us we were send there with a secret mission; steal as many ideas to improve our education, as you can. Look at form and content during the four days the event takes and bring it back to your own school. The Media Future Week lasts for four days, full time. All 150 students attending, work their butts off for 12 hours a day and then go to their hotels. Some to sleep, some drink in the hotel bar and some to quickly change before going into town. This year the MFW was organised on the Mediapark in Hilversum. All the plenary sessions took place in the cinema of the wonderful Institute of Sound and Vision. A museum but also the archive for the original film reels of every Dutch television program ever made. In this room great speakers from all over the world (well, the US and the Netherlands) managed to inspire us with stories about selfdriving cars, living with Google Glasses, innovative use of social media and Ibeacons that track your every motion. Discussions were raised about media responsibility and privacy matters and every student was challenged to create his or her own future perspective on these matters. Next to the plenary sessions, the greater part of the time was scheduled in as co-creation time. All students were mixed up in multidisciplinary teams. Each team was assigned a client with a very real problem. The team had four days to come up with possible, innovative solutions to this problem. These problems ranged from city marketing of Hilversum to the future of advertising. My team was burdened with the future of advertising. Which was, particularly for me, very interesting because I had very little knowledge on the subject. Of course we learn some basics in our marketing and communication lectures, but this is all still quite superficial I have noticed. Besides that, I also lacked knowledge on the field of future technology. This granted me a special role in the brainstorm sessions. For the first time in my life, I was able to be the wild goose; the person to shout out the most random and crazy ideas because in my mind there were very few limitations.

With a little help from Fieke Sluijs

In the first two days frustration mainly rises within the team because various different brainstorm techniques are applied but every idea that occurs, ends up on the killed darlings memorial board. Pressure is almost tangible because on day two there is already a Dragon’s Den scheduled in. Every 7

group has to pitch their current concept in three minutes for four professionals. Some concepts will be completely run down by the dragons and some will be praised. Whichever one it is, chances are the concept will go out of the window anyway. Most teams only got the feeling they were getting somewhere at the end of day three. By this time every team was running around like mad men to create prototypes, using the 3D printer or laser cutter available. Some team members were creating the visuals for the pecha kucha, aka 20x20 pitch, every team had to give on day four, others were fighting about who should pitch. At 2.30 pm on Thursday it was time for the presentations. Every group had 6 minutes and 40 seconds to impress the audience of approximately 170 people. But most importantly, their client. The most outrageous ideas were presented. Some very feasible but others a long way in the future. But the high you get from pitching in front of 170 people and getting a standing ovation is absolutely mesmerising.

Me pitching our team’s final idea

I cannot say the Media Future Week is an experience because the week is filled with experiences. Gaining knowledge, getting to know a lot of new people, nationally and internationally, all the creativity and overcoming frustration. I can only say one thing; already start asking Esther Bouw if you can please go next year. Oh and, did I mention all expenses are covered by school?

The last firsts No more first year Leisure Management students will brighten up our school. Never again will confused but eager young leisure geniuses wonder about what they are actually studying yet being sure it must be very different from VTM. The Inholland landscape will drastically change from next year on, the Leisure Management freshman is no more. (Except for the fact that VTM will in the future be called LM but still be in Dutch, I am confused.) To properly round off the year, I gathered three of the last LM first years for an interview. Joy Uriot, Jesse Holle and Alina Krause joined me in the Leisure Lobby to look back on their first year and forward to the upcoming years. I was very happy to notice that these three leisure-managers-in-the-making, were overall very positive about their education. There did not seem to be any resentment towards being the last ones. Then again, why would there? It only means they are extra special. One of the first points they all agreed on was how well focused on the practice the first year was. Jesse has followed a number of courses before coming to LM, none of which implemented practice in their education as well as LM. Most of you will have done the Todos project in year 1. This year they found another cause to have students organise events for, Mountain Child Care. This was named as one of the best experiences of the year. In college year 2013/2014 Inholland started off with one LM class of approximately 28 students. Joy, Jesse and Alina reckon only about 12 will continue onto the second year. This is something most teacher will be concerned about, the students don’t mind. The fewer students, the more personal attention, is their conclusion. Do you all remember your very first LM project group? Having to get used to working together with people so different from you? Joy found it to be challenging to work in groups like this. “There have been conflicts because I am so used to taking all the work on me. I have even had a girl screaming at me in front of the tutor. The biggest struggle is having to work with people that are not motivated.” For Alina the personal development that comes with the project groups is an absolute plus. “You get so much feedback, you really get to know yourself. People point out things you can then work on.” Being in such a small class results in a lot of personal attention which then helps with the personal development, as well. Of course we also discussed some critical points. One of the most important ones, especially for the international students, is a lack of a connection to various different organisations and other universities. For instance, UvA, HvA and VU are all connected to each other and Inholland sometimes feels as an outsider. Inholland students cannot always benefit from the same discounts etc. as other Amsterdam students can. Finally there is the point of the level of English among teachers. Do we need to go there again? I don’t think so, we know what we are talking about. Most importantly, they are most definitely looking forward to the upcoming years. Learning Dutch, putting their knowledge into practice and getting things done, exploring Amsterdam and co-create. We have some awesome last firsts if you ask me. Btw, Jennifer, we are on to you. We know that you use the same words of the week every year.

Seminar attendance On Monday the 25th 2 classmates and I travelled to Utrecht to attend a seminar given by Sydney Brouwer and Thijs Lindhout. The seminar took place in one of the Seats2Meet conference rooms on Utrecht Centraal. The seminar was called “Fuck Conformity, Kick-start the rest of your life” and entailed exactly that. The focus was on personal growth and obtaining it by not listening to what society expects of you but what you actually want and need. This is something I feel I live by already as much as I can. The speakers were obviously a great fan of audience participation because we were asked to make silly assignments like connecting 100 dots within a certain amount of time in a particular order and to do some stretch exercises. The boys were almost a stand-up comedy duo but had a lot of interesting thing to share. My project group and I had conducted an interview with Sydney the Friday before the seminar therefore we did not interview the speaker after the seminar. I cannot say that the seminar gave me many new insights or changed my point of view on a number of thing. Still it was nice to attend a personal growth seminar once again. (Especially because it was given by my brother.)

Summary of the interview On Thursday March 22nd, students met up with Sydney Brouwer. Sydney is a 25-year old with a bachelor in Law and an interest in the educational system in the Netherlands. Last year, Sydney was one of the participants of the Three Day Start-up weekend where he met Corinne Büschhuter. Via her, in January, Sydney participated in the Grit Project. At both projects, the ideas that Sydney pitched were selected to be worked on. In fact, although adjusted, both projects are still up and running today. One of these projects is the Open Masters Initiative, providing students with the possibility to design their own education. When evaluating the Grit Project, Sydney was able to compare this with the similar Three Day Start-up. The Grit Project was organised by educational institutions, the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) and the University along with ACE, the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship. Due to the presence of these institutions in the organisation, the project became one with an academic/school-overall feel. The possibility to seclude yourself with your team to brainstorm and work independently is very important and interruptions by teacher or coaches is then mainly distracting. The diversity of the groups is one of the aspects Sydney considers to be a great pro. In his group, there were a lot of different backgrounds, including for instance students from the Rietveld Academy. At this moment, Sydney is in the process of organising ‘Open Minors’. Pilots of this are already running at the Hogere Agrarische School in Den Bosch and in Leeuwarden. The Open Minors cover six months, like traditional minors, but only have a set program during the first month which is focused on finding out what the students want, who they are and where they want to go. After this month, students set up rules together with teachers in order to determine what is needed to be able to graduate. The main focus for the pilots that are now running is adding value. Considering Sydney’s experience, of course the students have asked him for tips regarding the set-up of a creative learning environment. He then indicated that it is important to not make it too school-structured and to provide students with the possibility to operate independently. An educational instate could of course be part of the environment but should not obviously be ‘pulling the strings’. By doing so, the selection of motivated students will become a self-fulfilling prophecy, which is what happened at the Hogere Agrarische School as well.

Guest lectures/documentaries To be honest I feel like the quest lectures were poorly organised. There were only 2 instead of the promised 5. The 2 ladies that did come and speak to use had very interesting things to tell about their field of expertise. It was very easy to listen to them since both of their English was easy to follow and well pronounced. The lecture given by Annelies de Bruine was insightful and inspirational. I felt she was critical about what she would tell us and gave us room to form out own opinions about trends. It was nice to get some interesting information rather than merely subject material for the exams. The lecture given by Jennifer Koelman was fun. She tried to convince us of her point of view and came up with many different ways of doing so. She was able to provide us with many very concrete examples of food within the creative industry which made the lecture mouth-watering. The documentaries were on the other hand not such a big success. When I tried to watch them in school I was not able to and in the lectures the computer kept shutting itself down.

Word of mouth When starting a business, one constantly tries to think of ways to generate work. This is no different with me. I launched my business, so originally called Bodei Brouwer, in February after I was asked to give a workshop on pitching at Team Academy. This went so successfully I figured I could try to make a living out of it. For the past months I have been working hard to establish my name within the field. A beginning has been made using WOM techniques. In 2014 I was a participant at the Media Future Week (MFW). There I gave a pitch that was entirely different from everything ever done there. Therefor I decided this would be a great starting point; they already knew me, they knew what I was about and they would have a fresh batch of students ready to pitch in April. I offered the MFW my services as a storytelling coach and they were happy to invite me to this year’s event. April came and the MFW kicked off. On Wednesday I worked with the presenters on their pitches, which they would have to give on Thursday. My goal: bring forth a revolution within the end pitches of the Media Future Week. The results were stunning. Frank Visser, the project manager, asked me what on earth I had done with the presenters in only one hour. He said he so clearly saw my mark on every presentation. This was even better promotion that I could have thought. Within a week after the MFW I had 5 new requests from various different organisations and event to moderate, give my workshop and to act as member of a jury. I realise that in my business people will first need to see what I can do in order to put such trust in me since I sell myself. This means that I need to invest time to show myself to the field. Another downside to this kind of word of mouth is that I do not have control over where the word travels. It was just as easily possible that nothing came out of my investment. But in the end the word of mouth is rewarding.
