Safety Precautions to Follow after Breast Augmentation Surgery

Listed in this article are some of the safety instructions you need to follow after the breast augmentation surgery.

There are certain important factors that are common irrespective of the type of cosmetic plastic surgery, that have to be considered before and after surgery. Patients who have undergone breast enlargement or breast augmentation surgery must follow specific instructions for ensuring the best possible results. This increases the chances for uneventful recovery, without any complications. Mentioned below are some of the safety instructions you need to follow after your breast surgery: •

Relaxation after the surgery is very important as you are likely to experience reduced energy levels at least for a few days after the surgery. The surgery is likely to take more toll on your body than expected. Total rest is required for your body to heal.

Avoid taking medicines containing aspirin such as Anacin, Bufferin, and Excedrin at least for ten days after the breast enlargement surgery. If you have headache, Tylenol is a safe option, if taken as per directions mentioned on the label.

After surgery, walking will help in preventing blood clots forming in your legs. Rigorous exercises, lifting heavy objects, and other strenuous activities should be totally avoided until and unless permitted by your surgeon.

As use of anesthesia during the surgery can make you feel nauseous, for the first day after surgery, drinking liquids and eating mild food is advisable.

While the bandage can be removed on the second day after the surgery, avoid removing the smaller tape bandages known as steristrips, as this may result in bleeding and disruption of wounds.

Taking shower bath the second day following surgery is considered safe.

Post surgery, you will be required to wear a soft bra (also known as surgical bra), as sports bras are likely to cause compression of the breasts and not allowing the implants to settle properly.

In most of the cases, the breasts need not be massaged after the breast augmentation surgery. In certain cases the surgeon will provide instructions about the proper method of massaging your breasts, if required, after monitoring your progress.

Avoid taking any kind of sauna or steam bath, at least for six weeks after the surgery.

Avoid taking a dip in any ocean or swimming pool for three weeks post surgery.

Scars, although reddened, will tend to fade away over a period of time. The healing period may vary from patient to patient.

Avoid tanning of your scars for a period of nine months after the surgery, as they are prone to becoming sensitive to the sun and may result in permanent darkening of the area.

Resume intake of regular medicines only after consulting with your doctor.

In case you develop any complications such as running temperature, drainage from incisions, or increase in the pain or redness around the incision area after surgery, call for immediate medical help.
