Dear Readers, The world of plants is an infinite source of potential ingredients. Biologists discover about 2,000 unknown species every year. And nature is what has been fascinating us for 60 years now. Today, we are able to look back on the legacy of our company founder, my mother-in-law, Annemarie Lindner. We are proud of our social and ecological commitment around the world, and of the innovative power of our natural cosmetics – “Made in the Black Forest.” Researched, developed and produced by our dedicated employees. Did you know that ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND has been awarded “Germany’s Best” in the area of face care and cosmetics? Read more on page 19. I am also extremely pleased that we have the opportunity to report on a woman who has long been a well-known face of BÖRLIND. The advertising for our face care and make-up products featured the face of Hollywood star Cameron Diaz 30 years ago, before she became an actress (page 4). In this issue, I invite you to share in the story of our anniversary and in our pioneering spirit. Let our articles inspire you, just as nature inspires us. Sincerely,

Use inner strength to reach your goal From Hollywood beauty to bestselling author: Cameron Diaz shares her recipe for really living in your body.

I

n the 1990s – before her impressive acting career – Cameron Diaz was already a successful model and advertising face for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND. Back then, this California girl with her broad, sunny smile already enchanted everyone with her natural radiance and sexiness. No wonder that Hollywood was soon at her beck and call, even though she had no acting experience. If anyone can be accurately described as “everybody’s darling,” it’s this high-powered woman who has plenty of joie de vivre – and doesn’t take herself too seriously. When she turned her back on Hollywood in 2014, it was far from the end of Cameron's career. At 47, she is refocusing herself in her personal and professional life and carrying her message out into the world as a successful author.

FROM MODELING TO BURRITOS AND BACK At almost 5’9” and with a slender build, light blond hair and radiant blue eyes, Cameron Michelle Diaz could easily pass as a placid Swede. However, this blonde beauty owes her appearance and her effervescence to her multicultural roots: her father, Emilio, is Cuban, and her mother, Billie, has German, Italian and Native American roots. Cameron was born in San Diego. This exotic mixture paved her way into the modeling business early on. She

This natural beauty with her ice-blue eyes graced the cover of all our brochures for skin care products and decorative cosmetics.

FOR CAMERON DIAZ, BEAUTY comes from inner strength, as do vital energy and the ability to perform at a high level.

has an adventurous spirit, and at the tender age of 16 traveled the world being photographed for brands like Calvin Klein and Levi’s. Her Hollywood breakthrough (“The Mask,” 1995, and “Crazy About Mary,” 1998) catapulted her to fame and to a top spot in countless “Sexiest Woman in the World” rankings. Given these titles as well as her background as a model, it’s hardly surprising that Cameron has always placed great value on a healthy lifestyle. And yet she acknowledges that she actually was not very health conscious. The Hollywood star didn’t learn until much later how closely nutritious food without artificial preservatives, coloring and flavoring is related to how we feel in our bodies.

“If you are what you eat, then I was a burrito with beans, extra cheese and extra sauce.”

HOW SHE LEARNED TO LISTEN TO HER BODY In “The Longevity Book” and “The Body Book,” a “New York Times” bestseller, Cameron explores nutrition, fitness and aging – still a taboo topic in Hollywood – from a new angle. Discussions with nutrition experts and doctors taught this confirmed fast food addict life-changing lessons. They encouraged her in her decision to listen to her body: “If I eat a plate of white pasta with just tomato sauce, I get tired right afterward. Instead of white pasta, I use whole-grain noodles or quinoa noodles, which I love.” Cameron wants to help us understand the body’s and skin’s needs all the way down to the cellular level and

7

to inspire people to make more sustainable decisions about their own health. Without mincing words and in a refreshingly good-humored way, she describes her fast-food past, lack of energy, problem skin and how she took a good hard look at her habits. Transforming her lifestyle also helped her find her footing in her love life. In 2015, Cameron married musician Benji Madden and today lives with him in Los Angeles. “The fact that I learned to get in touch with my body and really live in it is the foundation for everything I have done since then. My career, my relationship with my family and my relationship with myself. Now I know I can do anything I put my mind to.” And with her writing, that’s exactly the feeling she wants to share with other women.

ANNIVERSARY 60 YEARS OF BÖRLIND

ANNIVERSARY

“WE EMBRACE NATURAL COSMETICS” ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is now 60. For three generations, the company has stood for innovation, social responsibility and sustainability.

EST. 1959 YRS.

MADE IN THE BLACK FOREST

1959

1973

Annemarie Lindner founded BÖRLIND GmbH with her husband Walter and business partner Hermann Börner.

The deep natural spring from which BÖRLIND obtains its own especially pure water was found using a divining rod.

2005 1985 Michael Lindner, the founder’s son, became CEO of the company.

Annemarie Lindner received the “Natural Legacy Award,” the Oscar of the American natural products sector, for her life’s work.

9

I

t all started with a simple idea: Annemarie Lindner wanted to use herbs to make cosmetic products. Because she had suffered from acne for many years, she was looking for effective creams and tried treatments prescribed by her general practitioner. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. Her skin condition did not improve. She first encountered natural cosmetics while traveling. A herbal mask treatment helped her skin look healthier. That led to a desire to become a cosmetician herself. Ultimately, she opened her own cosmetics studio in her apartment in Dresden and made her first products in 1955. She became a sought-after consultant in perfume shops, drugstores and natural food stores, gave radio presentations and wrote about skin care and personal care for Leipzig’s “Volkszeitung” newspaper. After fleeing to the West in the late 1950s, the natural cosmetics pioneer founded BÖRLIND GmbH in the Black Forest with her husband Walter and business partner Hermann Börner. The name BÖRLIND is a combination of Börner and Lindner. High-energy, eager to learn and always in search of the

hidden potential of natural ingredients, in the 1970’s ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND became a skin care pioneer with the LL REGENERATION systematic care series. She was interested in anti-aging products before the theme became established in the cosmetics industry.

PIONEERING SCIENTIFIC SPIRIT Lindner also passed on her keen sense for innovative formulations and respect for people and the natural world to the next generations of her family. “We believe in scientific progress in order to further develop our research and discover new active complexes,” said Nicolas Lindner. “And we achieve our goals in harmony with nature, in partnership with the people who cultivate the raw materials for us.” These embraced values have also been recognized: ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND has already received 140 awards and honors und awards specific to the sector, as well as scores of “very good” from the Stiftung Warentest and Öko-Test consumer watchdog groups. “But the greatest honor is the loyalty and satisfaction of the people who use our products,” added Lindner.

2016 Research breakthrough – two innovative active ingredients were developed from Black Forest rose stem cells. A lipo-extract and a hydro-extract.

Did you know?

COMMITMENT FOR 60 YEARS DIVERSITY ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND products contain a total of 475 organically grown, wild-harvested or natureidentical active ingredients. SKIN COMPATIBILITY The efficacy and skin compatibility of all BÖRLIND products are scientifically confirmed by independent test institutes using modern analytical methods. RESPONSIBILITY Worldwide, BÖRLIND supports socio-ecological projects such as Jojoba Oil from Namibia, Himalayan Cherry Oil from Nepal, Cupuaçu Butter from Brazil, Avocado and Sesame Oil from Kenya and Aloe Vera from Guatemala. In addition, the company’s production is climate- neutral. DOING WITHOUT BÖRLIND makes its products without any genetically manipulated plants, synthetic colorants, parabens, silicones or mineral oil derivatives (such as paraffins and PEGs) and does not use microplastics or extracts from dead animals.

2017 The Nepal-based Himalayan cherry oil project was initiated. Daniela Lindner has developed many socioecological projects.

2019 Pioneering, effective and hand-in-hand with people and the environment: BÖRLIND celebrates its 60th company anniversary.

The principle of sustainability is the focus of both the packaging materials and production process. The CO2 created during production of the products is offset by a ClimatePartner drinking water project in Cambodia. Because of this, the product packaging has already been recognized as climate-neutral. We use plastic containers made of renewable raw materials (e.g. packing material made of sugar cane) and separately recyclable materials.

Each of the four active ingredient complexes contains ingredients from socio-ecological projects that BÖRLIND has been supporting for many years: algae from a biosphere reserve in Brittany, organic aloe vera from Guatemala, organic torch lily nectar from France and organic jojoba oil from Namibia. In addition, all of our beauty products are “Made in the Black Forest.” Many companies use regular tap water for production, but BÖRLIND relies on especially soft and pure deep spring water from the Black Forest, which is free from pesticide residue and heavy metals.

Black and gray colors can easily make your eye contour look tired and sallow. Soft, light shades or perky pastel colors are often best for creating a fresh appearance. Base your eyeshadow selection on your eye color. For especially sparkling eyes, use complementary colors to create contrast. Silver and bronze are ideal for blue eyes, shades of violet and plum go well with brown eyes, and green eyes look great with pink or berry colors.

DRAWING A PERFECT LINE Wearing eyeliner is like getting a little facelift. Your eyes will look even bigger if you extend the line slightly beyond the natural edge of the eyelid – and don’t be afraid of a little flourish. It’s best to “pencil in” the endpoint first. But be sure to draw as fine a line as p ossible. The smaller your eyes the t hinner the line should be! Thick black lines make eyes look smaller.

It’s a city that never stops. But that’s exactly why Milan is so compelling, so original, so full of contrasts. Many of Milan’s splendors are hidden. Milan’s cathedral (1), which is probably the northern Italian metropolis’ most famous building, is a very obvious exception. This imposing church is the third-largest one in the world, after St. Peter’s in Rome and the cathedral in Seville. From the roof of this monumental structure, visitors can enjoy a view of the beloved cathedral square and the oldest part of the city. An absolute must for visitors to Milan! Along with Paris, Milan is considered the world’s most important city for fashion. The area around

Via Monte Napoleone, Via della Spiga and Via Santo Spirito makes fashionistas’ hearts beat faster. You can find everything that matters in the world of fashion there, and Milan Fashion Week (2) is held four times a year. But Milan can also hold its own as a city of the arts. You can admire Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper,” Castello Sforzesco, and the Scala, one of the world’s best opera houses. The chicest spot in the city for the summer is Bagni Misteriosi (3). Today the cafes, bars, and galleries along its banks are very popular. The many small establishments are inviting places to enjoy an aperitivo. Milan turns out to be wonderfully relaxed there. The picturesque old artists’ quarter of Brera contains beautiful courtyards, and the Salone del Mobile furniture and design fair provides a good opportunity to admire these miniature oases. Every April, you can find countless events and openings in every corner of the city. But you will find stylish “Made in Italy” treasures all year round in this design capital, for example at the Mercatino dell’Antiquariato, the antiques market. FROM THE IDEA TO THE SHOPS In her studio (above), Nadja König creates new image worlds for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, for example the d esign of the back wall of display shelving on slate with illustrated ingredients and the “Made in the Black Forest” brand message.

2016, for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND as well. “ For example, the illustrations of the ingredients go remarkably well with the back walls of the display shelving,” says Silva Imken, Head of Marketing at ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND. The first joint project was a blogger event made really special by Nadja König’s gorgeous paper worlds and hand-written menus. “Illustrations mean hand-crafting, they create an artisanal feeling, are unique and support the tradition we have developed over the years,” said Imken. Whether it’s hand-written invitations or water-colored

paper models of the products as table decorations for press dinners and 3D product worlds for exhibition booths, store graphics, blog and website illustrations, with her small works of art Nadja König makes ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND’s world of beauty just a little more unique. With passion, precision and lots of love of detail. Her favorite product? “ There are two of them. ROSE BLOSSOM VITAL CARE and the ENERGY NATURE series Eye Serum. I love both of them. They are refreshing and have a lovely smoothing effect.” And she always takes them along when she travels. For a quick, spontaneous escape from the daily routine on a Saturday morning, she sometimes packs them as well. “And then I head to the country with my two children and my husband. Ideally to South Tyrol,” said the 35-year-old. She always keeps pens and a sketchpad within reach. And there she comes up with more new ideas for small-format water colors that spark the imagination, just as rose blossoms enliven our skin and senses.

RESEARCH & KNOWLEDGE HYALURONIC ACID

RESEARCH & KNOWLEDGE

HYDROPOWER FOR THE SKIN In the world of cosmetics, almost no other active ingredient is as highly regarded as hyaluronic acid. And for good reason. With its various types and special properties, hyaluronic acid is very versatile in skin care.

P

ale, dry skin or small wrinkles are typical of dehydrated skin. Its dried-out corneal layers need long-lasting moisturization. Even better would be an adequate, regularly refilled reservoir of moisture for preventive care; this maintains the skin’s firmness and suppleness. Hyaluronic acid, which boosts moisture content, is the beauty sector’s favorite thirst quencher for skin. Even though hyaluronic acid really is quite an “old friend.”

THE NUMBER ONE MOISTURIZING SUBSTANCE “Hyaluronic acid is, chemically speaking, a long chain of sugar mole cules,” explained Guylaine Le Loarer, Head of Research & Development at BÖRLIND. This substance, which the body produces itself, is an important component of connective tissue, synovial fluid and cartilage. It supports elastin and collagen, fibers in the tissue that keep the skin firm and elastic. But starting at the age of 30, the enzymes that form hyaluronic acid gradually become less active. The skin continuously loses firmness and elasticity due to aging and

environmental influences. Luckily, skin care products with hyaluronic acid can increase the substance’s concentration in the skin again and balance out deficiencies. Different forms of hyaluronic acid are used to meet the needs of different skin. WHITE JELLY FUNGUS White jelly fungus contains a special form of hyal uronic acid, the structure of which closely resembles the form found in humans. This botanical form of hyaluronic acid improves the skin’s moisture content and has a smoothing effect.

RED ALGAE Red algae from the Scandinavian coast does not supply hyaluronic acid itself; instead, it stimulates the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production. This effectively supplies long-lasting moisture to the skin.

DEEPLY PENETRATING PROTECTION FROM THE OUTSIDE IN The most important characteristic that makes this substance so useful in cosmetics is the ability of conventional high-molecular-weight, or long-chain, hyaluronic acid to bind exceptional amounts of water. When applied, it forms a thin moisturizing film on the skin’s surface, fills up the space between the cells and thus creates a smoothing effect from the outside. The skin immediately looks more supple and fresher. Products with medium- and low-molecular- weight hyaluronic acid contain hyaluronic acids that are split into smaller molecules. The low-molecular- weight acid molecules are so tiny that they pass into the innermost layers of skin and create a pillow-like effect there.

RESEARCH & KNOWLEDGE HYALURONIC ACID

An interview with... Guylaine Le Loarer

White jelly fungus as a source Where does white jelly fungus originally come from? This fungus grows on mango wood in tropical and subtropical climates and is cultivated on a wood substrate in many Asian countries. What gives this fungus curative powers? In traditional Chinese medicine, it is given for tuberculosis, colds and high blood pressure – usually dried, or as a pulverized extract. How does the fungus extract work in the skin? For botanical hyaluronic acid, high-molecular- weight polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates) are obtained and pulverized. They improve the skin’s moisture levels and also counteract free radicals.

26

BOTANICAL HYALURONIC ACID AT BÖRLIND Traditionally, hyaluronic acid is obtained from animals. At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, our for mulations have always used vegan sources. The centerpiece is hyaluronic acid’s botanical counterpart, a natural extract from white jelly fungus, also called silver ear fungus. BÖRLIND combines the conventional biotechnological type with botanical hyaluronic acid from the white jelly fungus. This keeps the skin from feeling so “taut,” even though the same firming effect occurs. “With serums and creams that contain hyaluronic acid, we are giving the skin something it already knows, and it’s impossible to accidentally use

too high a dose. And that’s also why hyaluronic acid is highly skin compatible and so well-suited for all skin types,” said Guylaine Le Loarer.

IDEAL CARE FOR MATURE SKIN In addition, ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND uses selected botanical ingredients, such as red algae, that have positive effects on the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production. This also makes it possible to increase the skin’s moisture content from the inside out. Combining it with externally applied hyaluronic acid makes this cocktail of active ingredients an ideal skin care companion for ages 30 and up, and it is essential in skin care series and make-up for mature skin.

CAMELLIA SEED OIL CAMELLIA JAPONICA SEED OIL

The camellia, which originally came from Japan and China, is primarily known as a decorative plant in Europe. This genus of evergreen shrubs is in the tea plant family and includes about 300 species. With their characteristic luxurious flowers that resemble peonies, camellias have been known in Europe since the 16th century. Camellia japonica is the best-known species of camellia. It played an important role in tea ceremonies in China and Japan. Oil is obtained by cold-pressing the chestnut-like seeds of the camellia. This process retains important vitamins and other substances. Camellia oil is rich in fatty acids and palmitic acid, which facilitate rapid absorption into the skin. Linoleic acid smooths dry, chapped skin, helps strengthen the skin’s natural barrier and alleviates irritation. Camellia oil supports skin cell activity and makes skin more elastic, leaving it with a fresh, radiant appearance. Traditionally, Japanese geishas used camellia oil in their hair care rituals for centuries.

At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, camellia oil from China is used in our ANTI-AGING CREAM MASK. Fortifies the skin’s natural barrier.

Improves the skin’s moisture content.

Increases the skin’s elasticity.

Creates radiant freshness.

!NARA OIL ACANTHOSICYOS HORRIDUS SEED OIL

The thorny !nara plant is native to the Namib desert and is the basic foodstuff of the Topnaar people, a tribe of herders and gatherers. The unassuming, low-growing shrub, which is in the squash family, has likely existed in the same form for 40 million years. It is estimated that only several hundred to a few thousand of the plants exist, and those plants watch over a true skin-care treasure: the seeds of the !nara plant’s melon-like fruits contain a precious oil. Golden yellow !nara oil is obtained through cold-pressing and is rich in linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid), which is important to the health of the skin’s natural protective barrier and moisture levels. The body cannot produce linoleic acid on its own. !Nara oil helps strengthen its natural protective barrier and retain moisture. ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND has an exclusive agreement with the Topnaar that allows us to obtain 250 liters of !nara oil directly from them. This partnership supports the desert tribe’s ability to preserve their independence and way of life. The exclamation mark that precedes the word “nara” stands for a click sound that is used in the Topnaar language.

NATUROYALE !NARA BODY OIL from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is formulated with !nara oil and other precious ingredients. Fortifies the skin’s natural barrier.

CORN OIL ZEA MAYS OIL

Corn originated in Mexico. Corn was the sacred plant of the indigenous inhabitants of Central America, and their myths of origin tell that the gods formed humans out of corn. Archeological findings of prehistoric corn remnants prove that people already used wild variants of today’s plant as a basic foodstuff 7,000 years ago. From the region that is now Mexico, corn spread across the American continent and in the 15th century, made its way to Europe with Christopher Columbus. In addition to the grain’s nutritional importance, oil can also be obtained from corn’s high-fat germ. Corn oil has culinary uses but is also popular as a well-tolerated base oil in cosmetic products. It contains a high percentage of linoleic acid, essential for maintaining and fortifying the skin’s natural barrier. Linoleic acid also supplies precious moisture and has an anti-inflammatory effect. In addition to linoleic acid, corn oil also contains precious vitamin E, which promotes cell regeneration and plays an important role in anti-aging care. It tones and smooths the skin and supplies moisture.

At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, we use corn oil from Italy in our ANTI-AGING HAND CREAM. Retains moisture.

Improves the skin’s elasticity.

Keeps skin supple.

Smooths the skin.

MACADAMIA NUT OIL MACADEMIA TERNIFOLIA SEED OIL

Macadamia nuts originally come from Australia’s rain forests. These evergreen trees require very specific growing conditions, which makes their cultivation difficult. In addition, the nuts (drupes) of the macadamia tree require complicated further processing due to their very hard shells. Combined with growing demand, this means that the macadamia nut is one of the world’s most expensive nuts. The queen of nuts, as it is also known, has an especially delicate, buttery flavor and pleasing aroma. Macadamia nuts are a popular, healthy snack. Cold-pressed macadamia nut oil, which is rich in palmitoleic acid and absorbed especially well by the skin, is used in cosmetics. Macadamia nut oil smooths the skin and gives it a healthy glow. The oil is a favorite for soothing dry, brittle skin. It helps skin and hair recover from negative environmental influences.

At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, we use macadamia nut oil from Kenya in our ORANGE BLOSSOM ENERGIZER. Provides lightweight yet intensive care.

Regenerates the skin. Leaves skin feeling silky.

CACAY OIL CARYODENDRON ORINOCENSE SEED OIL

Cacay trees are native to the rainforest regions of the Colombian Andes.

Traditionally, the nuts of the cacay tree were used as livestock feed. In their native region, many trees have been lost to deforestation for the purpose of creating agricultural land. Fortunately, however, the oily nut is experiencing a revival as a nutrient-rich foodstuff and in cosmetic use. Commercial use of cacay trees is also an attempt to bring back the Colombian rainforest. And cultivating the trees, which are able to trap large quantities of CO2 , creates much-needed jobs outside of coca-plant cultivation. Cacay nuts, which resemble chestnuts, have very quickly acquired a reputation as anti-aging miracle workers. The oil from these nuts is rich in vitamin A and E, as well as essential amino acids and linoleic acid. It is suitable for all skin types and improves the skin’s elasticity and tone. It also support the skin’s natural regeneration processes. In addition to its use in cosmetics, cacay nuts are also gaining in culinary popularity. The high percentages of omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids are thought to lower cholesterol levels.

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND uses cacay oil from Colombia that has received the EPM Sustainability Award. It is used in our 3 IN 1 FACE OIL. Regenerates the skin.

Smooths the skin.

Helps retain moisture.

Creates a fresh, radiant complexion.

SWEET ALMOND OIL PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS OIL

Almond trees thrive in a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers. From January to March, this otherwise inconspicuous deciduous tree is cloaked in luxurious pink-blossomed splendor. The almond harvest takes place in late summer; these slightly sweet nuts are popular in baked goods and other desserts, as a snack, for liqueurs and as oil. One ton of shelled almonds yields about 400 liters of sweet almond oil. There are three categories of almond oil quality: refined, pressed and roasted. The European Pharmacopeia specifies the degree of purity for the use of almond oil in cosmetic products. This rich oil has very high percentages of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids and tocopherols. Tocopherol protects and strengthens the skin, has an anti-oxidant effect and is rapidly absorbed. Almond oil also contains biotin, which makes it very effective in hair care. It strengthens the hair’s structure, stimulates cell growth and gives the hair more volume.

ANNEMARIE BĂ–RLIND uses sweet almond oil from Spain in SILK INTENSIVE SPRAY CARE, SILK INTENSIVE HAIR TREATMENT and SILK INTENSIVE CONDITIONER. Strengthens and smooths the structure of the hair.

Moisturizes the hair. Makes hair sleek and shiny.

BORAGE SEED OIL BORAGO OFFICINALIS SEED OIL

Borage, also called starflower, is native to the Mediterranean region but it can now be found in Central European gardens as well. With its hairy leaves and blue, star-shaped flowers, this herbaceous annual looks unassuming but it has a long tradition as a medicinal plant and culinary herb. The oil is obtained by cold-pressing the borage seeds and is often used in creams and ointments to promote healing. Borage seed oil is the botanical oil with the highest percentage of gamma linolenic acid. It is also rich in linoleic acid, flavonoids and astringent saponins. Both are polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids with anti-inflammatory and itch-reducing effects. For this reason, borage seed oil is often found in products used to treat atopic eczema. Taking this oil’s astringent, moisture-retaining and anti-inflammatory effects into account as well, it is clear why borage seed oil is well-suited for skin care. In addition to its use as a cultivated plant in gardens, wild variants of this blue-blossomed plant can often be found as well. Alongside its healing effect on skin and use as a culinary herb, borage is rich in nectar and is therefore an important plant for bees.

At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, we use borage seed oil from certified organic agriculture in China in our INTENSIVE CARE CAPSULES. Soothes stressed skin.

Promotes cell regeneration.

Fortifies the skin’s natural barrier.

MANGO SEED OIL MANGIFERA INDICA SEED OIL

The fast-growing evergreen mango tree is native to tropical rainforests. The fragrant mangoes that grow on this tree are valued both as fruit and a source of oil. Mangoes are processed into juice, puree, ice cream, and even chutney and pickles. They have become a fixture in our supermarket’s fruit departments. In addition to the mango’s popularity as a fruit, however, it also has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-viral properties. Mango seeds also yield a fat with properties that are very similar to those of cocoa butter, making it very popular for use in cosmetics. Because of its properties, the oil is also called mango butter. Its firm yet creamy consistency means it is an ideal base for body lotions, lipsticks and eyeliner. Mango butter replenishes lipids and moisturizes.

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND uses mango seed oil from India in decorative cosmetic products like lip liner, eyebrow pencils and eyeliner. Fortifies the skin’s natural barrier. Helps the skin retain moisture.

FALSE FLAX SEED OIL CAMELINA SATIVA SEED OIL

Observant hikers can find false flax, also called linseed dotter or gold-of-pleasure, along the edges of cultivated fields. This herbaceous plant, which can grow up to 120 cm in height, is a member of the crucifer family. Its history as a cultivated plant goes back to the Bronze Age. The wild variety originated in Asia but the plant is now widespread throughout eastern and southern Europe and northward to Denmark and Sweden. False flax is an annual that is cultivated extensively, meaning without major intervention in the surrounding natural environment. It grows in a wide variety of soils and is very pest-resistant. Traditionally, false flax seeds have primarily had nutritional uses. Obtained by pressing the oil-rich seeds, flax seed oil resembles canola oil in color and taste. The oil can range in color from a saturated yellow to reddish and is especially rich in unsaturated fatty acids. The high linoleic acid and omega-3 fatty acid content, along with vitamins, makes this oil very interesting for use in cosmetic products. It is absorbed quickly by the skin, leaves skin feeling silky smooth, nourishes dry, sensitive skin and helps counter acne and sunburn. In Austria, linseed oil is also a popular home remedy and is ingested pure or in salads to strengthen the immune system.

At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, linseed oil from Sweden is used in our NATUROYALE NIGHT CREAM. Supports the skin’s healing process.

Its fruit, the pear-shaped avocado – botanically speaking a berry – has become an indispensable staple in our supermarkets and continues to enjoy enormous popularity. Around the world, there are over 400 varieties of avocado in cultivation. With its soft flesh and slightly nutty, creamy flavor, the fruit of the avocado is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and potassium as well as vitamins A, E and D. The avocado has the highest fat content of any known vegetable or fruit. In addition to its popularity as a food, the avocado’s rich flesh also yields an oil. It is loaded with vitamins, making it popular for use in anti-aging care and the treatment of dry skin or brittle hair. It has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps support the skin’s moisture levels over the long term. Thanks to its high phytosterol content, avocado oil is easily applied and skin absorbs it rapidly.

SUNFLOWER OIL HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL

Sunflowers conjure up images of summer and blue skies. Although the sunflower originally comes from North and Central America, this annual flower with an impressive height of up to ten feet and large, vibrant yellow flowers is now at home in European gardens too. The name of the sunflower’s genus is derived from the Greek word for sun: helios. Over the course of the day, sunflowers follow the sun’s path from east to west in order to catch as much light as possible. The ability of these flowers to orient themselves toward the sun is especially impressive when one observes entire fields of sunflowers. In the 16th century, the sunflower was imported to Europe as a decorative plant and by the 17th century, the oil-rich seeds were already popular for culinary use. Sunflower oil, a light yellow oil with a delicately nutty fragrance that is obtained by pressing the seeds, is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and tocopherol. It has an anti-oxidant effect, inhibits the damaging effect of free radicals on cells and therefore inhibits premature skin aging as well. Sunflower oil nourishes the skin, leaving it soft and supple.

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND uses sunflower oil from Germany and France in our Regenerating Day Cream and Regenerating Night Cream in the ZZ SENSITIVE systematic care series. Supports cell regeneration.

BLACK CURRANT SEED OIL RIBES NIGRUM SEED OIL

The black currant, also called ribisel in Austria and cassis in France, grows well from Lapland to France, and from Armenia to the Himalayas. It is known to have been grown agriculturally in the gardens of Central Europe since the 16th century. In the kitchen, black currants are popular for jelly, soda or cassis liqueur, and the plant’s buds are used in perfume manufacturing to create a fruity note. Currant seed oil is obtained from the seeds of the black currant and has a special fatty acid composition because it contains both alpha linoleic acid and gamma linoleic acid. It also contains stearidonic acid, a less common polyunsaturated fatty acid with a strong antiinflammatory effect. Currant seed oil helps the skin retain moisture and has a regenerative effect. High-quality currant seed oil is yellow and has a pulpy-fruity aroma.

MEADOWFOAM OIL LIMNANTHES ALBA SEED OIL

This oil comes from, and is named for, a white flower in the meadowfoam family. Vast fields of blooming meadowfoam flowers resemble sea foam in the surf – which is where the name comes from. However, the oil has nothing to do with the well-known native European variety of this plant. American meadowfoam seed enjoys patent protection and is primarily cultivated in southern Oregon today. Meadowfoam seeds contain high levels of oil. Obtained by cold-pressing the flowers, the oil resembles jojoba oil and makes skin feel silky smooth without leaving an oily residue. It is made up of especially long-chain fatty acids and helps the skin retain moisture. It nourishes dry, flaky skin, helping it become supple again, and is especially wellsuited for use around the eyes.

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND uses meadowfoam oil from the USA in our EYE CREAM, NIGHT CREAM and NIGHT CREAM LIGHT in the SYSTEM ABSOLUTE systematic care series. Helps retain moisture. Smooths the skin and helps it become more supple.

Provides lightweight yet intensive care.

ARGAN OIL ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL

Today, the argan tree (also called argania) is found almost exclusively in southwestern Morocco and southeastern Algeria. But 80 million years ago, argan trees covered large portions of northern Africa and southern Europe. These trees feature a wild, shrub-like appearance, grow up to 12 meters tall and have a characteristic wide, dense crown. Argan trees have been planted for oil in Morocco for centuries. When dried, its berry-like fruits resemble dates. Precious argan oil is obtained by pressing the lightly roasted seeds of the fruits. It has moisture-retaining and anti-inflammatory effects that are especially beneficial for dry, irritated skin. The oil also tones and smooths the skin. In addition to its cosmetic uses, argan oil has a fine, distinctive flavor and is also a popular culinary oil. UNESCO designated the area of Morocco where argan trees grow as a biosphere reserve. APRICOT KERNEL OIL PRUNUS ARMENIACA KERNEL OIL

The apricot is a species of the prunus genus within the rose family.

The apricot is a relatively small shrub or tree and is well-known for its aromatic, yellowish-orange to reddish-orange fruit. In Armenia, the apricot has been known since ancient times, and it is assumed to have originated there. Apricot trees can survive heavy frosts and high altitudes. Their sweet juicy fruit can be eaten raw or dried, or processed into puree, preserves or spirits. The seeds, which resemble small almonds, can be eaten dried or used for oil production. Apricot kernel oil is extracted manually. The seeds must be removed from the dried apricots and carefully sorted by hand. The apricot seeds are dried, the kernels are removed and finally the oil is obtained through cold-pressing. Apricot kernel oil is golden to light yellow in color, depending on whether or not it is refined. It contains unsaturated fatty acids. Oleic acid makes up about 66% of the oil, which ensures easy absorption and soft-feeling skin. Linoleic acid supports skin health, moisturizes and improves the skin’s structure

ANNEMARIE BĂ–RLIND uses apricot kernel oil from France and Germany in our AQUANATURE Plumping Eye Cream. Strengthens the skin.

Improves skin structure.

Provides precious moisture.
