Combination skin requires care that brings it back into balance. Our COMBINATION SKIN systematic care series regulates the sebum and moisture content of combination skin from 20 onward. The normal and dry skin zones receive valuable moisture and the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) is clarified and mattified. The products’ innovative textures have structures similar to that of the skin so they are absorbed immediately, moisturizing and protecting the skin without adding an oily shine. Leaves complexions matte and clear. Green tea and algae extracts protect the skin against premature aging and refine its appearance. www.boerlind.com

Dear Readers, Our seas are often viewed as the cradle of life, while the desert is thought of as a hostile zone. It is fascinating that ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND manages to discover raw materials in both of these worlds that can be combined with pioneering research to create innovative natural cosmetics. For years, our head of research and development, Guylaine Le Loarer, has been paying special attention to the microand macroalgae of the world’s seas. As a result, over one hundred ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND products contain beautifying ingredients from the ocean. The special section in this issue, our GUIDE TO ALGAE, describes the different kinds of algae we use and reveals what makes these ocean-dwelling plants so special. We source jojoba oil, which is especially nourishing for the skin, from the Namib Desert in Namibia. In order to promote jojoba cultivation, we have been supporting the Jojoba for Namibia initiative since 2017. On pages 18 and 19, you can find fascinating facts about the project, as well as a link to videos from our visit to the plantation. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue!

he has many faces. And is much more than just an elegant, acclaimed actress. Charlize Theron, who chooses to star in action or spy movies and dramas rather than romantic comedies, is not afraid to speak her mind. She was born in South Africa, won a modeling competition at the age of 16, and then studied ballet. Theron does not balk at ugliness: again and again she has portrayed quirky, polarizing characters. For example, she plays the American serial murderer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster,” the break-through 2003 film that won her an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Theron often wins acclaim for her highly

expressive body language. She frequently decides to omit spoken language in her roles and replace it with gestures and expressions. Her training at a ballet academy gave her the tools with which to do that. “During my career, I have put more work into realistic roles than into glamorous ones,” she said recently in an interview with “Elle” magazine. On red carpets, during live performances and on TV, however, her beauty and poise are evident. One of her beauty secrets, says Theron, is that she is careful about exposure to the sun. She learned the importance of this from her mother when she was very young. “I’m a big fan of sunscreens. I use them even in the winter,
Africa. She performed as a ballet dancer in Europe and the United States until a knee injury ended her career. After her acting talent was discovered at the age of 18, she acted in several films in which she played a beautiful woman at the male lead’s side. In 2003, she liberated herself from being typecast with the film “Monster.” Recently, she has attracted attention for her work in action and spy films. For example, in the apocalyptic movie “Mad Max” (2015), she portrayed a onearmed, trigger-happy heroine.
In “Atomic Blonde” (2017) she played a British agent in Berlin. She can currently be seen in the drama “Tully” (2018), portraying a single mother of three children. ROOTED Charlize Theron frequently visits the African continent and her native country. She takes a stand against racism and in 2007 founded the Africa Outreach Project, which works for AIDS prevention.

NATURALLY PROTECTED EFFECTIVE AND SKIN-COMPATIBLE We love it because of its warmth: sunshine increases our sense of well-being. But the sun’s UV rays damage our skin. ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Sun combines a skincompatible solar filter (UVA/ UVB) with kombu algae extract to prevent sunburn. Vitamin E and sea-buckthorn complex support the skin on the cellular level. when it’s rainy and gray all the time.” Sun protection, she says, is a basic part of her skin-care routine. Her mother also motivated the actress to accept minor flaws.
SHE HAS A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO HER CURRENT ROLE In that film, “Tully,” Charlize Theron plays an overwhelmed mother of three who gets support from a nanny. She gained around 50 pounds for the role. “I set an alarm clock at night in order to shove macaroni and cheese down my throat,” she told an American online portal. In the beginning she felt like a kid in a candy store. “But then it just became a job,” she said. Theron, 42, struggled for a year and a half to lose those pounds again. For her role as a single mother, Charlize Theron was able to draw on her own experience. Since her 2015 separation from actor Sean Penn, she’s been raising adopted son Jackson (6) alone and has adopted a daughter, August, who is two years old. She gets support from her mother, Gerda Maritz, who even accompanies her daughter to demonstrations like the one in favor of stricter gun laws in the U.S.
TAKING A STAND AGAINST RACISM AND SEXISM Theron is not afraid to take a stand. When Donald Trump was sworn into office, she took to the streets along with other celebrities to protest against sexism and racism. She recently admitted that she’s worried about her darkskinned children: “There are places in this country I wouldn’t move to.” Her childhood in South Africa gave her an awareness of the importance of human rights and equality, she says. In fact, Theron’s first native language is Afrikaans, not English. She didn’t learn English until she migrated to the U.S. She was discovered in Los Angeles at the age of 18, while she was supporting herself with modeling jobs. A talent scout noticed her as she pleaded with
a bank teller to cash a check for her. She made such an impression on the agent that he gave her his card, and later he became her manager. Although Theron has lived in the U.S. for decades, she still feels a strong connection to her African roots. She founded the Africa Outreach Project and advocates for AIDS prevention. Through education, discussions and campaigns, she hopes to break the taboos and dispel the myths that surround that disease. She was designated a United Nation Messenger of Peace in 2008 for her passionate support of women’s rights in her native country and her anti-violence advocacy. Just being beautiful is not enough for Charlize Theron.

ADVOCACY IN AFRICA Charlize Theron works for AIDS education and even met with South African president Jacob Zuma for this purpose.

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND SKINCARE RANGES
IT SUITS ME Not all skin is the same. That’s why daily skin care products should be carefully coordinated with each other. Where to find them? Take a look at the ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Skincare Ranges.
O
ur body's delicate membrane knows what it wants. We just have to recognize what it really needs in order to be beautiful. Certain skin characteristics are inherited, while others are influenced by environmental factors. Nutrition and lifestyle also have direct effects on the condition of our epidermis. Skin type also depends on sebum production, composition, metabolism, moisture production and the ability to store water. There are four different skin categories: normal, dry, oily and combination skin. Mature skin and sensitive skin also have distinct needs. Until the age of 25, sebum production increases. That’s why our complexions are sometimes oily and acne-prone in our younger years. Then sebum
production steadily declines. The forehead, nose and chin may still be prone to impurities and have an oily sheen, but cheeks tend to be dry. We call this combination skin. After age of 40, a normal to dry skin type predominates. The older the skin gets, the less able it is to produce oil and store moisture.
CAREFULLY DESIGNED PRODUCTS FOR DAILY CARE As we age, our protective membrane becomes thinner and more fragile. Skincare needs increase. The ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Skincare Ranges provide a visual overview of how new findings from the field of biotechnology are providing us with

hen the weather gets warmer, we want our make-up to feel even but not mask-like. Tinted day creams like our BB Creams are the perfect solutions. The name BB refers to “beauty balm,” or alternatively “blemish balm.” Unlike traditional foundations, these products contain fewer color- and light-reflecting pigments. That means slightly uneven areas become less conspicuous. This discreet coverage is combined with nourishing ingredients. ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND BB CREAM contains carotenoids from green algae that counter free radicals und skin aging caused by UV rays. Botanical hyaluronic acid from Chinese white jelly fungus moisturizes and smooths. ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND CREME PASTELL uses jojoba oil to nourish the skin without greasiness. Sesame oil, which retains moisture, also fortifies the skin's natural barrier. Both 2-in-1 products are intended for use as supplements to the systematic care series. They can be used in combination with daytime care or, depending on skin type, as a replacement for it. This means you can simplify your morning beauty routine and at the same time, beautify your complexion.

And where better to follow the trend than in the southwestern corner of Germany – in the Black Forest? The Black Forest is the largest continuous forested area in Germany. Fir and spruce trees predominate. The ancient Romans gave this forest its name. The “silva nigra” was unsettled at the time, almost impassable and an ideal hiding place for bandits. The Romans built a few connecting roads through the area, but preferred to settle in

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, innovative products go hand in hand with appreciation of nature.
How are ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND’s natural cosmetics produced? Laura Noltemeyer takes a tour of the company in Calw.
I
think all women would agree that it’s not so easy to find the perfect skin care products for one’s own skin type. I have been looking for a long time, and have tried a lot of products. For some years now, ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND
products have been among my favorites and have become part of my daily skincare routine. When I got the opportunity to have a look at the entire process that the cosmetics undergo, I didn’t need to be asked twice. Upon my arrival in the Black Forest, I received a very warm welcome from Nicolas Lindner, the executive partner. The building is painted white with the windows supplying little dabs of green – it radiates tranquility. Behind the house there is a garden with many plants that are also used in the cosmetics. What a great idea, being able to see the ingredients in their natural

environment. One thing I hadn’t known is that ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is still a family business. And I sensed it everywhere during my visit. The atmosphere is wonderfully pleasant, the employees are very friendly – and everything is completely sincere.
THE COMPANY IS COZY AND INNOVATIVE From the reception area, I went to meet Guylaine Le Loarer, Head of Research & Development. Le Loarer, who is French, is responsible for all products and innovations. Tests, experiments and research are conducted on raw materials in the labs, and their efficacy and tolerability are examined. The most exciting part for me was seeing the various fragrance components and what different effects they can have in a product. ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND also only uses high-quality organic raw materials from sustainable sources, such as the Black Forest rose. Nicola Weller in the Quality Assurance department is responsible for checking all products for quality and purity. That means all the raw materials have to be tested. And there are

plenty of them, 500 in all! Tim Wagner is in charge of storing them. The formulations are of course very precise. Prior to my visit, I had no idea of the quantities that are produced. So naturally I was impressed by seeing a bulk container with 1,000 liters of BB CREAM from which 20,000 tubes of cream are filled. The whole working area was so clean that I hardly dared touch anything. Of course, the hygiene rules are very strict here in order to prevent any pathogens from getting into the cosmetics. For that reason, bulk product is quarantined for 48 hours and is only released for filling after microbiological testing. My next stop was the packaging department with Jana Zakrajsek, where the cosmetics are filled into bottles, jars and tubes. “We fill 2,000 containers per hour and five million a year,” Zakrajsek told me. An impressive number. Next, I went to the shipping area, which I had not expected to be so high-tech. “Self-driving forklifts place the packaged products on the warehouse shelves,” Maurizio Arcoria explained to me. The whole process is paper-free, which is impressive and innovative. And the shipping procedures also follow to the principle of sustainability.
23
At the end of my visit, it was this insight as well as the employees’ relationships to the company that most impressed me. During my tour, I spoke with many employees, some of whom had worked for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND for years. I was especially interested in what their favorite products are. I’ve been using a few of them for a couple of weeks, and I am really impressed. For example, I wholeheartedly recommend that you try the 2 IN 1 BLACK MASK. Or the HYALURONIC ACID EYE PADS, which I’ve already been using for a while and which always help me look fresh and rested.

recious botanical oils are like gold in the field of natural cosmetics. Placed into liquids drop by drop, they form tiny spheres that glide effortlessly upward. On their own, they do not form compounds with water. As two elements with differing natures, oil and water need an intermediary plus speed and pressure to unite them. The result is a classic component of all skin care products: an emulsion.
EFFECTIVE TRANSPORT SYSTEM FOR INGREDIENTS Depending on their consistency, these products are called creams or lotions. Differing proportions of the two components result in different properties. Oil-in-water emulsions moisturize well and are easy to spread. Water-in-oil emulsions, on the other hand, have a more pronounced replenishing effect. Both resemble our skin’s natural lipids in terms of composition and structure. But even classics sometimes need to be adapted to modern times, and in particular to our skin’s needs. In recent years, the structure of
NATURAL WOMAN 01 —2018
emulsions has been decoded with increasing precision. BÖRLIND GmbH has long used such findings to develop new technologies and products. “In our systematic care series for combination skin, we use a special process for creating the emulsion,” explained Guylaine Le Loarer. The advantage of the resulting microemulsion is that it is incorporated into the outer layer of the skin instead of remaining on top of it. Experts call this “enhanced penetration.” The tiny diameter of each drop of this type of emulsion makes the difference. To achieve it, BÖRLIND GmbH uses technology from the field of biochemistry in a very targeted way. Under high pressure, the premixed product is pressed through tiny channels into a chamber where the emulsion streams collide. The forces that are generated create the desired fineness. Using sophisticated temperature controls during the process, this condition can in a sense be “frozen” into place. In 1997, our company received the “Dr. Rudolf Eberle Award” for this innovation. “The high-emulsification process enabled us to create an innovative texture,” said Le Loarer.

Which botanical ingredients does the combination skin series contain? For example, we use
algae extracts obtained from knotted wrack harvested in Brittany. It regulates sebum production, is effective against free radicals and creates a radiant complexion.

Are there other innovative ingredients? The sugar mole-
cule cyclodextrin is obtained enzymatically from plant starch and mattifies the complexion. A milk-peptide complex supports regeneration, increases elasticity and has a smoothing effect.

“It is absorbed by the skin, moisturizing and nourishing it without leaving an oily sheen.”
THE FORCE OF NATURE CREATES BEAUTIFUL COMPLEXIONS This special emulsion technique is used in COMBINATION SKIN. This series regulates lipid and moisture levels by providing optimal care for normal and dry areas as well as the T-zone. The oily areas on the forehead, nose and chin are clarified and mattified. To do this, BÖRLIND GmbH uses ingredients like green tea and algae extracts. Le Loarer, Head of Research and Development, is especially passionate about seaweed.
“The algae we have selected, a form of knotted wrack, firms the complexion and counteracts premature aging.” This type of brown algae, with its characteristic air bladders, is particularly at home in the tumultuous littoral zones of the Atlantic. The milk-peptide complex used in the night cream has smoothing and regenerating effects. It substance contains components called cytokines that stimulate collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis in the skin. BÖRLIND GmbH used a range of efficacy tests and an application study to verify these and other effects of this systematic care series. “We observed an improvement in the condition of the skin with regard to tone and reduction in sebum content,” confirmed Le Loarer. “There was a reduction in the skin’s roughness and in the depth of wrinkles, while cell regeneration and hydration increased.” For this reason, Le Loarer recommends the COMBINATION SKIN systematic care series for everyone, just young people. “All age groups benefit from the balancing effect.”
