I know you will find this place special too. Now that you are here, I will point out some of the obvious features (but I know you will also find some unexpected delights). First of all, notice our friendly, laid-back pace - no hustle and bustle here! Boerne is home to the one and only Hill Country Mile and you can’t miss it. Take a stroll along historic Main Street to experience the great boutique shopping, casual and fine dining and our public art displays. There is always something going, on whether it is a free concert at Main Plaza or a family-friendly festival, so wear comfy shoes and go exploring. You can get just about anywhere in the heart of Boerne using our great trail/sidewalk system, and for a unique back-to-nature experience be sure to visit the award-winning Cibolo Nature Center along Cibolo Creek. If you happen to be here on the second weekend of the month, you are in luck! Visit the fabulous Market Days vendors at Main Plaza, then on Saturday evening, hop on the 2nd Saturday Art & Wine trolley to visit the River South Arts and Design District and the Hill Country Mile art galleries. While staying in Boerne you can also enjoy some of our surrounding Hill Country attractions for hiking, biking, motorcycling, kayaking, caving/spelunking, museums, wineries, golf courses and sporting facilities. There are daytripping opportunities for all ages, in all directions.

BOERNE

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country, Boerne (rhymes with ‘journey’) is a small German-heritage town located 30 minutes from downtown San Antonio, yet it has managed to retain its Old World Charm. German immigrants first settled this land near the cool waters of the Cibolo Creek over 150 years ago. Boerne’s beginnings are evident in the old stone buildings with narrow windows, steep gables, outside stairways and gardens. Today, more than 140 historic structures remain. The city’s friendly people show a deep respect for their cultural and ancestral heritage. Visitors and locals stroll down Haupstrasse (Main Street) through European architecture and discover a myriad of retail stores along Boerne’s Hill Country Mile (many housed in historic buildings) that carry antiques, gifts, 6 | VisitBoerne.org

home décor, accessories, clothing, jewelry, candy, pickles, Christmas ornaments year-round, Texas products, Boerne merchandise, and a number of outstanding art galleries. There are also many eateries that range from casual, outdoor dining to elegant, fine dining. Boerne offers an array of lodging from a world-class resort to brandname hotel chains, quaint bed and breakfasts, historic hotels and unique destination lodging. There are many family attractions in the area including Cave Without a Name, which is nationally recognized as a “National Natural Landmark”; Enchanted Springs Ranch, selected in 2009 as one of Oprah’s picks; Cascade Caverns, which boasts an indoor waterfall down under the Earth, and numerous area parks, lakes, and recreational sites.

In the summer and fall months, the weather is accommodating for outdoor activities including fishing, picnicking or watching the famous ducks that meander along the trails at River Road Park. Intermingled among the shopping, visitors may experience the inviting aromas from a hometown bakery or “catch up on the latest” at one of the local coffee shops. While taking in the ambiance of this thriving small town, visitors can relax at a wine bar or enjoy a local microbrewery. The cypress-lined Cibolo Creek flows through downtown Boerne and continues on to the nationally recognized Cibolo Nature Center where hiking trails and a handicapped accessible boardwalk allow visitors to explore 100 acres with four distinct ecosystems - grassland, marshland, woodland and river bottom. Year round parades, festivals and cultural events fill the air with music and merriment. The Kendall County Fair, Boerne Chocolate Walk, Berges Fest, Wings Over Boerne,

Parade of Artists, Harvest Moon Celebration, Abendkonzerte, Weihnachts Parade, Dickens on Main, Boerne Market Days, the Key to the Hills Rod Run, the Corvette Show, the Wild Game Dinner, and Hot Rod Nights are some of the popular local events. Boerne has been routinely lauded in regional, national and international publications as a great place to vacation or live. The most recent of these accolades

comes from Family Circle Magazine (August 2014), who named Boerne as one of the “Top Ten Best Towns in the USA for Families”.

PURESÓL SALT CAVE SPA The history of the Puresól Salt Cave has its roots in Poland, home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It was near there that young Beata Huzaraska Hatley grew up as the daughter of a university instructor at the prestigious AGH University of Mining and Metallurgy. Her father also designed and built coal mines, and over time, he began to notice that the workers in the nearby salt mines did not suffer from the same ailments as those who worked in the coal mines. He eventually made health and wellness his mission, and young Beata was influenced to continue the tradition of wellness. Beata later moved to the United States where she began her career as an aesthetician more than twenty years ago. During this time, she began to envision a salt cave in the United States that was a replica of the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where more than1million international visitors annually seek treatment in their rehabilitation rooms. In 2013, Alice Duran and Olivia Duran partnered with Beata to open the Puresól Salt Cave Spa on the grounds of Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, a Texas Hill Country resort and golf destination owned by country music legend George Strait and business partner Tom Cusick. The cave was built with more than 20 tons of salt imported from Poland. Research has proven the therapeutic value of salt caves and their positive influence in the treatment of respiratory illnesses, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, heart and cardio-vascular diseases, stress reduction and more. The climate is rich in ions, minerals and micro-elementary particles like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and many others that are naturally 8 | VisitBoerne.org

absorbed into the lungs as you relax in a comfortable chair with calming music. Puresól Spa features a line of eco-certified products developed using only natural organic ingredients. “Just as some people utilize a trainer for wellness and fitness of their body, the same level of care should also be considered for wellness and fitness of the skin,” says Beata. In addition to the Salt Cave, Puresól Spa is a full service spa that offers specialized services for men and women including massages, body treatments, facials, microdermabrasion and waxing. Custom treatments are also available for couples, teens, and expectant mothers. For more information or to book services, visit PureSolSpa.com or call 830.537.5010.

HISTORY OF BOERNE

Photo: Boerne in the 1890’s

Boerne was settled in 1849 by a group of German immigrants who brought with them their own language, customs and music, much of which is still alive over 150 years later. The settlers first called their town Tusculum. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to Boerne in honor of Karl Ludwig Börne, a German author and publicist who inspired many young Germans to leave their homeland and travel to the new world. Soon, the town would boast a gristmill, post office, blacksmith shop, livery stable, butcher shop, saloon, general store and a private school. The town was chosen as the county seat in 1859, and in 1870 the original limestone courthouse was built—presently the second oldest courthouse in Texas. Boerne’s robust environment encouraged the health resort industry, and many people suffering from lung ailments traveled to town to recuperate. One of these resorts was the St. Mary’s sanitarium, founded by Dr. Ferdinand Herff, a prominent early German settler who was instrumental in getting the railroad built from San Antonio to Boerne in order to get his patients to town. Herff would also perform the first cataract surgery in Texas on an Indian chief 10 | VisitBoerne.org

who was so grateful that he protected the Herff family residence in Boerne from raids. When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass railroad began making daily treks to Boerne from San Antonio in 1887, the stagecoach was replaced. The railroad also brought mail and newspapers from San Antonio and cut the travel time between the two cities to three hours. At that point, tourism expanded and Boerne grew. There are many historical buildings throughout town, including the famous Robert E. Lee House (525 S. Main) where General Lee stayed while passing through to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. Today, Boerne remains a popular place for tourists, and it is home to more than 12,000 residents. For more information about Boerne’s history, or to download a walking map of historical buildings, go to VisitBoerne.org or stop by the Boerne Visitors Center (1407 S. Main).

Boerne’s MAIN Attraction

You’ve seen the round red and black icons around town that say “Hill Country Mile”, but what exactly do they mean? These signs mark the geographic area that encompasses Boerne’s Hill Country Mile.

If it has been awhile since you visited Boerne, you may have noticed that things have changed

the charm and the intricately planned delights that await you. The Boerne in Bloom program has added charming planters and landscape enhancements to the Downtown area, and public art has been installed as part of Boerne’s commitment to the arts. There are also new Boerne Trails and River Road Park improvements. A widening of the Main Street bridge and sidewalks have made Boerne more pedestrian friendly and accessible to all.

BOERNE”S HISTORIC DISTRICT The best way to experience the Hill Country Mile is to put on your walking shoes and go exploring! Stroll down one of the meandering paths along the banks of the Cibolo Creek in River Road Park, where you can cast a line, bring a picnic, ride a bike and enjoy your day. Head toward Main Street and you can experience one of the meticulously maintained historic properties, pocket parks, notable restaurants and unique shopping that rivals that of much larger cities. RIVER SOUTH ARTS DISTRICT

South of the Cibolo is where you will find a quieter Boerne, with more great places to shop, eat and relax. Art and design shops, galleries, restaurants, lodging, and some of the city’s most stunning historic buildings can be found including St. Peter’s Catholic Church, an iconic limestone structure built high on a hill overlooking the city. The church was modeled after San Antonio’s Mission de la Purisma (1730) with twin towers that rise 65 feet in the air. Next door, The Phillip Manor has seen many uses over the last 150 years, and now has been restored into a boutique hotel, pub and

event center. Across the street, the twostory triple column structure with arched windows is the Victorian style Carstanjen House (also called The Mansion House). Also nearby is the famous Kronkosky Tower, offering the best view in Boerne. BOERNE CITY CAMPUS The Hill Country Mile is all about community--- not only providing a better place to live, but also a better place to visit. Boerne’s Patrick Heath Public Library, which opened in 2011, is a state-of-the-art, LEED Gold Certified 30,000 square-foot facility. They offer free WiFi, live music monthly and have on display a rare Low German Bible from 1614. The library itself is a beautiful facility, but the grounds are just as fabulous. In addition to gorgeous native plants, they also feature a Heritage Plaza with a windmill, smokehouse, rainwater catchment tank and grape arbor, along with an outdoor classroom and multiple quiet areas to read.

Enjoy a better place to shop, walk, live, play, dine, work, hike, or stay. For more information and updates, please “Like” us on Facebook. facebook.com/ HillCountryMile.

BOERNE TRAILS

Boerne has three diverse trail systems that are popular with locals and visitors. Each of the trail systems has their own unique character, and all offer outstanding opportunities to get close to nature. Amenities include paved parking at the trailheads, water fountains, doggie fountains and doggie litter bags, rest stops and picnic tables along the way, interpretive signage throughout the length of the trail system, water mister (Old No. 9—Esser Rd. Trailhead) and more. Amenities vary by trail. The trails have a curfew from 10pm6am daily. OLD NO. 9 TRAIL 358 Esser Rd. 1.4-miles linear park This trail was designed using elements that honor the days of train travel. The motif of the San Antonio & Aransas Pass (SA&AP) railroad has been fused into the Old No. 9 Trail amenities, utilizing some of the more distinctive design elements including the depot shade pavilion at Blanco Rd. which was designed to replicate the outline of the smaller depots of the SA&AP.

(south trailhead) 1.75-miles linear park The Cibolo Trail extends from Ye Kendall Inn trailhead to City Park trailhead at the entrance to the Municipal Pool. The trail follows Boerne’s signature waterway, the Cibolo Creek, and at several points enables users to move in and out of Boerne’s historic downtown and the famed Hill Country Mile. At the confluence of Cibolo and Currey Creeks, a 150-foot pedestrian bridge nestled among the trees offers a birds’-eye view of a refreshing waterfall and crystal clear flowing stream. CIBOLO NATURE CENTER & HERFF FARM As you make your way down City Park Road you’ll realize you’re on to something special as you enter a cooling tree tunnel where majestic trees of different varieties reach up and branches extend to one another. You are entering the unique world of the Cibolo Nature Center (CNC). Stop in at the CNC Visitor’s Center, browse the gift shop and grab some water while the kids look at animals, nature displays, and the mini-library. The trail map is your guide to the 100-acre Nature Center grounds. Awaiting you there are dinosaur tracks, an ADA-accessible boardwalk, a marsh, a tallgrass prairie, forest trails, picnic tables, and the beautiful Cibolo Creek. This connection to nature is something that you won’t find just anywhere! If you are in town on a Saturday morning be sure to stop into the Farmers Market at Herff Farm. Set on 60 acres of historic farmland that boasts an original 1800’s homestead, barn and windmill this Farmers Market brings local goodies direct to you including fresh produce, artisan products, and more. Live music drifts through the oak trees while children’s activities keep kids busy with make-andtake projects. The CNC gives back to the community through Children’s and Family Programs and Adult Education classes that teach land stewardship and best practices for sustainability. Citizen Science sends volunteers out to the field to make sure water quality, biodiversity, and overall ecological health is top-notch. Lastly, the Moondance Outdoor Concert Series, the Mostly Native Plant Sale and the Celebrate the Cibolo Gala are programs that are presented by the Cibolo Nature Center. For a beautiful outdoor event, you can also reserve space at the CNC. For more information, go to Cibolo.org. 44 | VisitBoerne.org

A JOURNEY IN THE ARTS

GROWING PUBLIC ART

It’s an exciting time for Public Art in Boerne! In recent years, Boerne has added several pieces to its sculpture collection with the installation of the Wild Bill Hickok bronze at Main Plaza (cover photo), The Land of the Cheyenne on the Heart of Boerne Trail, and Father Gander in River Road Park. These installations have been made possible through public/ private partnerships with the Boerne Arts community and private donors. The City is poised to take the next important step to grow its Public Art collection. In 2015 it will launch the inaugural Annual Public Art Sculpture/ Monument Competition in partnership with the Boerne Arts community, Boerne citizens, and City Staff.

Artists from across the nation will be invited to participate in this unique opportunity to show their sculpture or monument in Boerne for a year. Ten pieces will be selected from the submissions and will be placed throughout central Boerne where visitors and locals will be able to enjoy a walking tour of the sculptures. Over the year that the exhibit is in place, visitors and citizens will be able to vote for their favorite piece of art. At the end of the year, winners will be announced. The City will have the option to purchase one or more of the exhibited pieces for its permanent collection. We encourage you to make a return trip to enjoy the art – and of course visit your favorite shops and eateries while you’re here! We know you’ll enjoy it so much that you’ll want to make the exhibit an annual tradition. It’s Official... Boerne is a Great Place to Live! Boerne has been named one of the “Ten Best Towns for Families” in the August 2014 edition of Family Circle Magazine. Reasons for its selection include its affordable housing options, strong sense of community, and exemplary schools. Other reasons cited include our “friendly atmosphere” and “random acts of kindness”.

come home to majestic views, open skies, and a small-town atmosphere.

The excellent school system and the highly walkable downtown, along with the hike and bike trails, have helped brand Boerne as a very desirable community for relocation. Not only is it a great place to raise a family, but it attracts retirees to escape the harsh weather conditions in colder climates.

“Everyone has a different idea of what ‘home’ is. To some, proximity to wonderful schools is the most desirable feature of their new home. To others, a large lot with privacy or majestic views of the countryside is what makes it their dream home,” Graves adds.

Boerne is the seat of Kendall County -- the 5th fastest-growing community in the state, and the 4th highest per capita income in the State of Texas. Boerne has been nationally ranked in numerous regional, national and international media including Livability. com, who ranked Boerne #4 in their annual “Top 10 Small Towns in America” 2012 list. The close proximity to San Antonio makes Boerne a desirable place to live. You can easily commute to San Antonio, but then 62 | VisitBoerne.org

Local real estate expert Denise Graves, a Platinum Top 50 REALTOR® and founder of The Graves Group at Phyllis Browning Realty in Boerne, agrees that this is a hot market! “We are happy to say that the industry we love the most is definitely not slowing down in Boerne or in the surrounding areas. It is no surprise that due to the population growth in our area, home sales are up. Current listings are flying off of the market almost as soon as they are listed. Boerne also has a robust rental market,” Graves says.

Some of the most popular neighborhoods include Fair Oaks Ranch and Cordillera Ranch. Others prefer the quaint, historical cottage architecture that can be found in the older neighborhoods in downtown Boerne. But one thing is certain: there is a home, neighborhood, or rental that is perfect for your lifestyle.

DID YOU KNOW? St. Helena’s Episcopal Church (410 N. Main St.) was the first church built within the city limits. Until the late 1870’s, organized religion was banned by the town fathers and a rule is said to have existed that any preacher caught within the city limits at sundown would be shot.
