II have always enjoyed writing. When I was in second grade our small-town newspaper in Trona, CA had a “Letter to Santa” Contest. I was awarded third place and won a giant lavender teddy bear, almost as tall as I was.

In high school my English teacher was so impressed with a story I wrote as an assignment that he read it aloud to the class and then asked me to tell the class the “story behind the story”. In other words, what point was I trying to drive home? Yikes! To me it was just a story. I didn’t know how to answer Mr. Thompson. So, he helped me along by asking questions. If you asked me the same question about Little Squirrel, I would say: Everything and everyone is important. We each have a significant part to play in life. Emerson said it this way: “... all sorts of things and weather must be taken in together, to make up a year and a sphere…”

When I wrote Little Squirrel I was confined to home for long periods of time each day caring for my 99-year-old mother-in-law. One time as I sat at the top of the stairs at my typewriter, Mom quoted the poem to me. And that poem was the inspiration for my story.

One of the things that makes Little Squirrel so special is that all the charming artwork was done by a ten-year-old artist, Jaden Rodriquez. BBM
