BOERPLAY TRIM TRAILS: HOW TO DEVELOP BALANCE AND FINE COORDINATION SKILLS AT SCHOOL!

2

BOERplay - Trim trails (recycled plastics & robinia)

TRIM TRAILS That trim trails are a popular feature at schools is not a surprise. In a time where more than 90% of British children aged 2-4 fail to meet even the bare minimum recommendations of physical activity (Sigman, 2019) and outdoor time has been largely swapped in for indoor time within two generations (also due to public playgrounds disappearing), many schools have taken it upon them to make sure children learn to move and exercise more by means of a daily mile and a trim trail. This ensures children get their daily required physical exercise, along with the development of balance and fine coordination skills when installing a trim trail. This way exercise, sport and play can be offered.

Children learn through movement Countless scientific studies show that exercise makes a relevant contribution to the general health but moreover, helps to improve learning performance. Children cannot sit still all day long, as they develop by moving. The speed of development is dependent on the ripening of the brain and the nervous system. This ripening takes about 7 years. In this period, it is important children play, exercise and gain experiences, and thus learn. This is primarily done via their senses. The modern way of raising up children seems to focus too much on the cognitive part, and too little on movement, with many children arriving at their first school from a low-motion upbringing. It then takes time and effort from the school to make sure these children find their own balance and body awareness, build up self-confidence and consequenttly, learn faster.

Hand-eye coordination More and more publications state that the eyesight of children is quickly deteriorating as they focus too much on things that are nearby, such as mobile phones and one-hand videogames. If children go outside more, they need to estimate distances continuously through their movements. This means their eyes need to work together. A consequence is that after this exercise they can focus a lot more on what is explained on the blackboard in class and the work on their desk. Mix movement with climbing and balancing on a trim trail and their hand-eye coordination also improves, enforcing the work between the left and right brain part to intensify, leading to the activation of the vestibular organs in the cerebellum, in turn activating the cerebrum. As a result, a child experiences a better peace of mind and can concentrate better. Moreover: it helps in the writing and drawing skills of children!

How does a trim trail help? A good trim trail features various handling performances that aid in the development of a child. The following are features a trim trail may have, and how it benefits a child: Balancing By balancing, the body learns to hold itself upright in any position. This gives the child confidence in his body and develops self-confidence: confidence in your own body, which can stand up in any situation (emotional development).

Jumping The areas where fantasy and abstract thinking are located are activated when jumping with both legs off the ground (important: this does not apply to a trampoline!). This is important for math, letters/numbers, history, geography, etc. as well as understanding fairy tales and fantasy. Jumping activates the development of rhythm, which is necessary for all areas of development and activates feeling free and experiencing joy. Children also often laugh when jumping (emotional development), and they jump when they are happy. Jumping is important for the development of fitness: the heart and lungs work harder. The muscles also become stronger and bone formation occurs. The bones of young children still mainly consist of cartilage. Bone formation is created by intensively tensing the muscles. Which is important for the firmness of the body, selfconfidence, tension arc, etc. Turning Turning is rolling vertically and provides an enormous stimulation of the balance organs, so that peace is created in the head and the child can concentration better. Children lose orientation when turning around. This is a good experience necessary for: awareness of orientation, walking straight and sideways, understanding four cardinal points, learning to read compass, etc. Hanging When hanging on rings, ropes, horizontal bars or monkey bars, a child develops muscle strength in the arms, shoulders and neck and a good cooperation. This is important for writing. Hanging teaches a child to coordinate and keep control of the body. This is important for the development of self-control/impulse control. Children sit a lot and stretching and activating the

extensor muscles provides a good counterbalance. In addition, having the spine stretched is important for the use of the brain. Hanging is symmetrical movement, and as written before, are important for the cooperation of the hemispheres of the brain. Climbing / clambering Climbing is crawling vertically: the child learns to make the arms and legs work together, and again, the right and left hemispheres of the brain and the right and left half of the body work together. When clambering, the coordination of the body is further challenged, and a child develops a good body awareness. Clambering with arms and legs gives a grip on the world: this makes a child understand more what it is learning, as the whole body is involved. Climbing and clambering provide a challenge, going beyond one’s limits; it challenges the strength development of the arms (important for writing), and the legs (balance, self-control). It even helps in reading comprehension: only when you have experienced something yourself, you can understand stories such as a bird in a nest, which is as scared as the mother bird wants to teach it to fly… Concepts such as front, rear, high, low, far, near, hard, smooth etc. is all experienced, important for language and reading comprehension. It is also very important for the development of the posture and movement senses (proprioception). In the muscles, tendons, ligaments and capsules of our body there are senses that continuously provide information about how we move and what postures we adopt. As a result, you can learn how much power you need to do something. This applies to any activity, but it is specifically stimulated when clambering. In this way the body is trained to master all kinds of movements in order to be able to use them at other times.

Zigzag / slalom Gaining insight into space, being able to move back and forth, thereby strongly developing one’s spatial orientation, which is necessary in traffic, for math and writing. By slaloming you make many connections in the brain, not just one way, but in all directions. This is important for learning to understand words like “not” and “none”, words that indicate an inversion in a sentence, important for communication and understanding. Experience of the body, body knowledge, body awareness and selfknowledge. All this forms the basis for who a child is, self-confidence and self-knowledge both important basis for acquiring knowledge. Eye development: you participate in your body with your eyes: what do your eyes see and which movements may be necessary for this? And of course, complicated movements: merging everything you have learned which in turn gives a confident and happy feeling.

All in all many reasons why for a complete development of a child, a trim trail is a logical investment for schools in order to secure a better and quicker education of children, with a challenging playground as a bonus! For this, BOERplay can supply a multitude of products and endless combinations of items to cater for any trim trail; whether big or small, aimed at toddlers or teens, for any budget. In this catalogue we show you part of our line-up of items in four categories: recycled plastics for younger children, recycled plastics for older children, Robinia which is partly built up and Robinia plano (to be constructed on site).

THE MATERIALS As we understand that school play equipment will be extensively used on a daily basis and need to be useable not years but decades, we supply our products in two high quality materials: Recycled plastics and Robinia Hardwood.

About recycled plastics BOERplay was the first playground production company to implement recycled plastics into its products back in 1980. Playground equipment made of recycled plastics can themselves also be 100% recycled. Our recycled line-up is therefore a prime example of circular economy. The products are very sturdy; some of our items have been standing in the public space for well over 30 years! The base consists of Rebo plastics. This is a mixture of carefully selected plastics: polypropylene and polyethylene. These materials consist purely of hydrocarbons and are environmentally sound. The HMPE plates we use are black core, also produced from recycled plastic. The default colour of Rebo is black. The black colorant (carbon black) is an excellent shield from UV light. The only noteworthy effects that will occur after years of exposure to sunlight will be a slightly lighter colour (greyish) or a surface that is a bit rougher. Plastic does not react to humidity; therefore, our products hardly require any maintenance. The plastics are completely inert; they do not or hardly react with other chemicals. From independent research by Textile Lab, we know that our plastics are free of toxic substances. They do not contain plasticisers, chlorine, cadmium, or other additives. Since 1950, the volume of plastic waste has risen from 1.7 million tonnes to 288 million tonnes in 2012. In Europe alone we produce around 57 million tonnes per year. More than 25 million tonnes has become waste, of which only 6.6 million tonnes got recycled. You can give our waste an inspiring new future through our equipment made from recycled plastic!

About Robinia Robinia is a European hardwood. This type of wood comes from the acacia tree (Robinia Pseudoacacia). The wood has a natural resistance to both abiotic and biotic influences. Wood types are classified into different resistance classes. Robinia is the only European wood species that is classified in resistance class 1. It is a good alternative to tropical hardwood. Robinia is therefore particularly suitable for outdoor applications such as play equipment. Robinia endures for a long time without any problems. The lifespan of Robinia has been determined based on extensive research (Molnar 1988), wherein for outdoor posts that are in contact with the soil, a lifespan of 15 to 30 years has been determined. For posts without contact with the soil, this even goes up to 80 years! Sustainability and Social Responsibility go hand in hand within our company. That is why we believe in responsible forest management. FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council®, is an international organisation that promotes responsible forest management. We consider the use of FSC hardwood very important and are therefore also FSC certified. 100% of our Robinia used in production is FSC certified. The origin of FSC timber meets worldwide standards for sustainable forest management. The 10 FSC principles form the basis for these standards. If forest owners adhere to the FSC standards, their forest can be certified. Independent auditors ensure compliance with the rules.

WE ARE PART OF SOCIETY SUSTAINABILITY, OUR DIRECTIVE We realise that as a company, we have a major impact on sustainability. We produce in-house and, when possible, obtain our raw materials and semi-finished products also locally, with a positive impact on CO2 emissions. A unique advantage. With our suppliers we make solid agreements in the way they are responsible for their chain liability to comply with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy. We design and develop our equipment ourselves. During design the starting point is the Dutch sustainability norm (which succeeds that of the EU). We meet the prescribed sustainability criteria, as set up by PIANOo

CRADLE TO CRADLE We design with a quality that guarantees a lifespan of at least 15 years. Therefore, we use high quality materials such as: - FSC® certified wood (class 1) - Stainless steel (304 / 320 cut with a minimum thickness of 2 mm) - Galvanised and powder coated steel - Aluminium - Hercules rope, nets and ropes made of 16mm vandal-proof Hercules rope, made from 6 strands - Rebo plastics, made of recycled household plastics (approx. 315 million plastic bottles) and industrial waste.

LOW MAINTENANCE & LIFELONG WARRANTY We believe that after installation our equipment ought to need little maintenance, keeping as much budget available for new, extra playgrounds. Therefore, we design equipment with low maintenance costs, a long lifespan and a lifelong warranty on most base materials used (hardwood gets 15 years of warranty) We place our equipment directly in the ground. We use a minimum of concrete foundation, so after they are depreciated our materials can easily be removed or relocated.

PLAYGROUND SURFACES BOERplay (playground) equipment is designed in such a way that a grass area often suffices. In addition, there are many other safety surfaces one could use as impact absorbing ground material, such as (coloured) artificial turf or rubber cast floors with playful motifs.
