To find which aspect of old Beijing tradition that people find it interesting and would like to re experience. I gave a interview to the people at the site of QianMen street.

Game Deconstruction Traditional game museum Instructor: Hanwen Liao Personal work, June 2017

In the first step I chose mostly middle age and old locals , who may have experienced traditional Beijing features before. The question was designed mainly to tap their most interested part of old life.

This project delves deeply into issues of building various spaces in a museum based on implementation of vistor's desires. The museum sitting in the street of QianMen, an old street that surrounded by the local residents with strong traditional culture atmosphere. It exploration centered on using approaches of manipulating walls and shaping space to achieve recreation of space where traditional old games and activities in Beijing taken place.

The feedback that I received referred to games many times, though they have a bias of beautifying their childhood memories. However, they still inspired me by showing plenty of games. The most mentioned was kite flying and iron ring rolling. Other traditional activities were also mentioned. W

Nobody likes boring history lesson. So I raise a question before the beginning of the project: how can we recurring build a history museum that have interesting spaces? My answer is to discover what does people really desire in a museum. Extracting prototypes from those desires hence clues of spaces can be found. So I throw an interview collecting people's desires at QianMen. Through the feedback, four most wanted old traditional activities and games in Beijing was summarized. Through analyzing the behavior pattern of those activities and games, a geometric genealogy is built. The geometric fenealogy describes all source geometries used in the construction of the project. Most of the wall in the project are bent according to this geometric genealogy, breaking the boundaries of wall, floor, roof and path, creating a series of strange spaces. All the metamorphosed space serve functions that developed from prototypes based on those activities and games. Various user can find different spaces that they prefer to stay or engage with. The remaining odd spaces are also reorganized.

The main building sinks under the ground to make sure that roof with covering grass, where visitors can fly their kites, can be easily reach from the city street. The various spaces in the building are connected by a round path, where users can roll the iron rings. When rolling along the path, the users can see a series of the inner spaces, including all main spaces, like reading a book. One citizen can spend all day in this museum without feeling boring.

Outdoor & Indoor All five activities fields (including rooftop, the kite flying field) is all outdoor spaces. They do not stay inside of the Building envelope. The space of cujyu soccer, iron ring rolling and archery, all their roofs are eliminated so that they could be just same to old outdoor activity fields. The outdoor activity field also bring another advantages to the project. It solve the daylight problem of this underground architecture. Each outdoor space is a daylight well built by glass supporting daylight for its surrounding indoor exhibition space. Besides, the glass offer observation between inside and outside.

Wall-less House The residence without wall Instructor: Stephanie Lee Team: Collaborate with YuChen Zhao, October 2018 Contribution: Concept Design,Modeling &Drawing(plan, section1, rendering, analysis) Architecture originated from the construction of shelters with thatch and branches. As years went by, the ancient “thatches and branches” and “shelters” had gradually evolved to existing “walls” and “dwellings”. As the most fundamental architectural element, the walls are not restricted to closing a space and supporting its roof any longer. For residential buildings, the other function of walls, separating spaces, is of great significance as well. For a long term, the partition walls and rooms inside a residential space are stereotyped in terms of residential building designs. In dwelling environment, people have demands on privacy and those on public spaces as well. It seems that the partition walls have been an indispensable element of residential space. However, when looking back, people may wonder that the various functions of walls are really necessary in a living space. The design aims to explore the possibilities of new space models and living models without walls in a residential space. Due to the absence of walls, the concept of “separation” is weakened. So we assume that the users are a big family composed of eight persons. First of all, after removing the constraints of wall, the design is intended to arrange the space layout and function on a disordered basis, thus creating a more flexible and freer space arrangement.Secondly, the “cavity” created by the combination of concave and convex curved surfaces in the design is to replace the "room" formed by the traditional partition walls. The curved surface can divide the privacy of space without rigid separation, so as to create an open and coherent living space, and also provide more possibilities and interests for the household living environment. In addition, the design uses pillars as its structure and define inner and outer spaces with glass and curtains so as to replace traditional load bearing walls and shape a more open living space compatible with the environment.

In the previous research on the historical development of dwellings and walls, we found that wall functions evolved to supporting structures, dividing spaces, and placing utilities from the earliest function - closing a space. We rethought the major functions of walls when “dismantling” walls.

After removing partition walls, the previous rigid order was destroyed as well and functional areas could be combined freely. New space forms would be generated after sharing and separating spaces as per various privacy demands.

After applying corresponding forces to different functional zones, the "cavity" composed by the concave and convex curved surfacewill provide space for the areas which require higher privacy needs.

Tulou Revival Apartment Hotel in Traditional Tulou Village Instructor: Bin Hu Team: Collaborate with Xingyue Sun, June 2016 Contribution: Concept Design,Modeling &Drawing(section, rendering, analysis)

0.600m level plan

Tulou, a traditional residence type in Fujian, south China. The name of "Tulou" can be literally translated into "earth building". Hakka people, one of 56 ethnic minorities in China, create those building in the ancient time to protect themselves from the enemies and the beasts in the surrounding. Hence the defensive features of Tulou make it completely isolated from the outside environment , but also form a multi-level inner space. Our project is a hotel built beside those Tulou. Analysing Tulou, we were inspired in three ways: shape, relationship between outside and formation of the central area. The shape of our hotel has been changed many times. From circle to square to triangle to triangle without acute angles. The shape that is homogeneous to all kinds of Tulou was found and deveploped. As the relationship to the outside, Tulou shows its defensiveness. However our project reverse the isolation states of Tulou and create a surface that both divide and fuse the outside surrounding with inside space. We extract the prototypes of old walls and windows of Tulou, and built a shaped glass out surface. It is capable of maintaining sightseeing connections while keeping the original form of Tulou. Also, the multi-level inside space are converted into new formation. The project started from the deconstruction of social functions and relationships of Tulou, translated them into the circular and liner architecture elements. Then we developed the core, which is corresponding to the shrine in the center of Tulou. Using the combination of wood, tiles, glass and iron beam , we recreate an absolute center of the building.
