FALL 2021 ACTIVITY GUIDE

CHICKADEE PRESCHOOL DROP – OFF PROGRAM

AGES 3.5-5 Immerse your child in the outdoors (FLC) or garden (BUGS) environment. Children will become comfortable in nature while learning about environmental stewardship. Preschoolers will explore the surrounding ecosystem, learn through a STEM based curriculum, and develop cognitive, motor and emotional skills. We will spend most of our class time outside and will meet no matter the weather. Please send your child with a snack, a water bottle and appropriate outdoor clothing. Program will run August 30, 2021-May 20, 2022. Registering will serve as first month’s payment billed at the current rate for this fiscal year. Each month will cost $240. Parent meeting to follow for more information.

AGES 3.5-5 In these classes, children will discover nature. Classes include songs, short hikes, stories, crafts and hands-on experiences both inside and outside. Each class has a different theme. This is a drop-off program. Please have participants bring a snack, water bottle and appropriate clothing and shoes to be outside.

BOISE URBAN GARDEN SCHOOL (BUGS) COMMUNITY DAYS

AGES 3.5-5 Our 3-hour preschool drop-off sessions focus on seasonal components of gardening that encourage exploration, creativity and healthy eating. Hands-on, outdoor activities may include garden activities, science experiments, story time, craft projects, bug catching and more. Have your child visit the BUGS garden and watch your child grow!

EXPLORE NATURE PARENT/CHILD AGES 2-4 & ADULT Join your child for an exploration in nature! We will go on a short hike and participate in a craft, game or other activity at our outdoor facility. Children should dress for the weather and be accompanied by an adult. Fee includes child and parent/guardian.

Grow Together Gardening

GREEN BEANS – AFTERSCHOOL AGES 5-7 Our month-long afterschool sessions allow youth to explore the garden from the height of harvest season through preparing for the long winter. We wil focus on seasonal components of gardening that encourage curiousity, creativity and healthy eating.

GROW TOGETHER GARDENING – PARENT/CHILD AGES 2-4 & ADULT Spend a morning in our garden exploring the natural world with your little ones every second Sunday this fall. Instructors will facilitate activities and garden tasks that will have you and your child working AGE

STORY TRAIL ADVENTURE AGES 3-6 & ADULT The 2nd Tuesday of each month, we invite you and your preschooler to join us to walk our ¼ mile trail and read a story together. Afterwards get creative with our story-related craft. Children should dress for the weather and be accompanied by an adult.

Hockey Learn to Play The focus and goal of the Hockey Learn to Play curriculum is to teach beginner hockey players the fundamentals of skating. It is important

AGES 4-7 Players will learn how to sit on ice and stand up, proper stance, march forward, forward two-foot glide, dip, squat, scooter pushes, T-push, forward swizzles, snowplow stop and backwards skating. Full equipment required. Rental equipment provided at no additional charge. Helmet must be provided by skater. No sticks allowed.

AGES 4-7 Players will learn one-foot snowplow stop, introduce hips with ¼ turn twist to hockey stop, full strides using 45-degree V-Push, shuffle stride, backwards hustle, backward C-Cuts, power pushes, backward outside edge glide, forward C-Cuts, C-push glide, forward outside & inside edges, gliding 2 foot turn and lateral crossover march. Classes will be structured following USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) Program. Full equipment required. Rental equipment provided at no additional charge. Helmet and stick must be provided by skater.

Learn to Skate Recognized by Learn to Skate USA as a top program in the country, Idaho IceWorld’s Learn to Skate program provides a fun and structured way for skaters to be physically active and improve their skills under the professional eyes of certified instructors. We have group classes for all levels and ages. Check out the curriculum for each level at LearntoSkateUSA.com. All students of Idaho IceWorld’s Learn to Skate program must be current members of our governing body, Learn to Skate USA. AGES 4+ The 2021 Boise Ice Show is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4, at 6PM and will take place at Idaho Central Arena. All Learn to Skate students who register for BOTH the Sept/Oct and Nov/Dec sessions are eligible to participate in the annual Ice Show, co-produced by Idaho IceWorld and the Boise Figure Skating Club. Practices for Youth and Adult & Teen groups will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 29Dec. 1, 6:15-6:45pm. Two additional mandatory rehearsals are scheduled for Sundays, Nov. 21 & 28 at Idaho Central Arena, time TBD. Maintaining this practice/rehearsal plan is our goal, but subject to change. AGES 5-6 The Homeschool Zoo program series provides a unique learning experience for students schooled at home. The course consists of classroom discussion, laboratory activities, animal encounters and specialized zoo tours. Classes will align with Idaho State Science Standards and focus on topics and principles based on grade level. Themes will emphasize looking at animal groups and taxonomy, adaptations, habitats and ecology. Each individual household must register their child for the class. Kids only! PERFORMING ARTS BALLET – Beginner AGES 6-8 This class introduces new dancers to the basics & beginning techniques of traditional ballet while continuing to build on those techniques with returning students. BALLET – Intermediate AGES 6-12 This class follows a more traditional ballet class structure focusing on increasing strength, flexibility and coordination while continuing to learn new fundamentals and ballet terminology. Beginners may join class with instructor approval.

SPORTS/FITNESS MARTIAL ARTS – Karate Shotokan Mixed Level AGES 6-12 Learn traditional Shotokan Karate including dojo etiquette, warm-up, Kihon, Katas and Kumite. Class will focus on Kihon or basic techniques (blocks, punches, kicks and stances) and Katas or prearrange forms (formal exercise) and Kumite or sparring as students progress. Instructor Alvin A. Sablan is a Nidan (2nd degree Black Belt) and an active member of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). He was awarded Shodan (1st degree Black Belt) in 1986 and Nidan in 2014. Class co-taught by Jennifer Harrington, a Brown Belt and active member of SKA.

AGES 5-12 & ADULT Parents will be taught beginner skills while children are taught separately. Proper technique is emphasized along with racquet control, cooperation and movement. AGES 8-11 This for both beginner and intermediate players ready to play on a slightly larger court. The classes are designed to continue building athletic skills while learning or refining the skills necessary to serve, rally and score. These players will learn an understanding of proper technique and maintain that technique during point and match play.

PARKOUR AGES 6-11 Parkour is getting from point A to point B as quickly and efficiently as possible using just your body and environment. All you need to get started are the clothes on your back and shoes on your feet. Each class we will go over how to land, roll and fall safely as well as move quickly in your own style. Each week has its own “theme”; vaulting, jumping, flipping and climbing. Parkour is a great way to stay active, keep your mind sharp and build confidence. Classes are held at Myth Parkour, 2902 S Featherly Way in Boise (near Cole Rd and Victory Rd).

HOMESCHOOL ADVENTURES HOMESCHOOL ZOO AGES 5-13 The Homeschool Zoo program series provides a unique learning experience. The course consists of classroom discussion, laboratory activities, animal encounters and specialized zoo tours. Classes will align with Idaho State Science Standards and focus on topics and principles based on grade level. Themes will emphasize looking at animal groups and taxonomy, adaptations, habitats and ecology. Each individual household must register their child for the class. Kids only! PERFORMING ARTS ACRO YOGA AND DANCE FOR GIRLS AGES 12-17 Teens will build strength and find a playful and fun way to connect with others! Skills will focus on strength building, working in partners and learning new ways to move their bodies. Participants will explore partner yoga acrobatics, acrobatic dance and suspending themselves in the air via yoga hammocks. DRAWING – All Levels Drawing uses the very simplest tools and is the most basic of the art forms yet can be the most intimidating. Students will improve both drawing and observation skills by learning about the fundamentals of line, shape, value, perspective and proportion. This is a fun, low-pressure, relaxing class. No experience or drawing ability required.

DRAWING – Fall Botanical

PAINTING, ACRYLIC – All Levels Beginning students will learn the basics of acrylic painting including techniques of color, composition, texture and layering. A variety of styles and subject matter such as still-life, landscape, portrait and abstraction will be explored.

PAINTING, ACRYLIC/OIL/ WATERCOLOR – Level II

Botanical drawing is an introduction to the principals of drawing from life. We will work on creating value and texture, framing a solid composition, building color and using the traditional materials used by botanical illustrators... pencil, colored pencils and watercolor. Specimens will include fall leaves, harvest fruits and other autumnal delicacies. All skill levels welcome. All materials provided.

This course is for painters who have previously taken an oil, acrylic or a watercolor painting course. Students may work in any medium. A variety of styles will be explored and the instructor will be available to assist with students’ chosen subjects and paintings recommended for the group. Instruction will also be given on combining mediums within the same painting.

ENAMELING – Beginner

PAINTING, OIL – All Levels

Vitreous enameling, defined as fusing glass to metal using high temperatures, is an ancient art dating back to the 13th century B.C. Students will explore a variety of techniques to create small and lovely works of art. All materials provided.

Beginners will learn the basics of oil painting. Intermediate/advanced painters will refine their skills in traditional techniques such as underpainting, glazing and alla prima painting. No prior experience is necessary.

POTTERY – All Levels

The enameling open studio gives people the opportunity to work on projects of their own design, following their own interests. Enameling teacher will be on hand to set up the

studio, answer questions and assist students as needed. Students must provide their own enamels. Group orders of supplies will be made as needed and a complete supply kit is available for $20.

WATERCOLOR – All Levels This class offers instruction in watercolor techniques of stretching paper, exploring various types of washes and composition. More in-depth painting techniques will be covered for those with previous experience.

WATERCOLOR FOR SENIORS (50+) Expand your art expertise in this class for seniors. Learn about watercolor materials and their particular characteristics. BOISE URBAN GARDEN SCHOOL COMMUNITY DAYS It’s a monthly Open House at the BUGS barn and garden! All are welcome to explore and connect with the plants, critters and people who live and work with us, and learn more about how to be involved with our garden community.

Using local foraged plant materials, create a unique and beautiful holiday wreath. Participants are welcome to bring their own metal or foam wreath forms or we will provide branches to build one. Evergreen branches, accent plants, wire and ribbon provided.

Adult performing arts is an ongoing learning experience helping to enhance strength, flexibility and coordination all while having a tremendous amount of fun in a friendly environment! Flamenco

BALLET - Beginner This class is for those who always dreamed of learning ballet but never had the chance. This unique class will give you the opportunity to enter the world of classical ballet for the first time and from the most basic level. No special clothing required, just come dressed comfortably and ready to move.

BARRE EXERCISE Barre is a fun and empowering class set to great music. The ballet barre is used to sculpt the lower body, abs and for flexibility training. We will use full body exercises, light weights and other props. There are modifications and challenges for all levels.

TAP ADVANCED MASTER’S CLASS If you are a serious tap dancer with six or more years of tap training and you want to be challenged, push yourself, learn some different tap choreography and have some great fun, then this is the class for you! Choreography will be anything from blues tap to rock to jazz tap and musical theater tap.

TAP DANCING DIVAS AGES 55+ Dancing has no age limit! Move your feet and make your spirits soar. BEGINNER for those who have never tapped before but always wanted to, or tapped way too many years ago to count. INTERMEDIATE is for those who have tapped recently and have had at least two years’ experience. For those who are serious, the ADVANCED class is the one for you. The choreography is low impact yet challenging. The music is upbeat and fun to tap to.

There are many different styles of Swing dancing, but this class will focus on the Swing dance that started it all…Lindy Hop! This dance was created in the late 1920s as a variation on the Charleston. SPORTS/FITNESS (18+) DANCE FOR BODY AND MIND

Mixed Level

Keep your body and mind healthy. Discover how you can do this and groove at your own pace in this dance party workout with low impact dance steps.

Learn traditional Shotokan Karate including dojo etiquette, warm-up, Kihon, Katas and Kumite. Class will focus on Kihon or basic techniques (blocks, punches, kicks and stances) and Katas or prearrange forms (formal exercise) and Kumite or sparring as students progress. Instructor Alvin A. Sablan is a Nidan (2nd degree Black Belt) and an active member of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). He was awarded Shodan (1st degree Black Belt) in 1986 and Nidan in 2014. Class co-taught by Jennifer Harrington, a Brown Belt and active member of SKA.

GOLF LESSONS Evening classes will cover full-swing, stance, grip, short game, chipping and putting. All classes are open to any skill level, from beginner to advanced and will have on-course instruction.

GOLF – One-Day Workshop with a Pro A comprehensive workshop for a smaller group of golfers who want to spend a day with two golf professionals! This program will be instructed by Peter Nichenko, PGA Golf Professional, John Russell, Assistant Golf Professional or Stu Hampton, Assistant Golf Professional.

Start the day out right! This class explores mindfulness with a variety of techniques to be calm with your thoughts and to feel stillness. Beginners welcome. Students may need to do some stretching and slow walking. Students need to bring a blanket to stay warm and something firm to sit on like a cushion or yoga bolster.

New to pickleball or never played and want a better understanding of the basics? Learn basic rules, scoring and strokes. Class prepares you for beginner drop-in play. Students may sign up for more than one session. Bring your own paddle or a paddle may be available for use at the site.

Players that have played before and are interested in drills and learning strategy.

Enjoy a series of non-impact exercises to develop strength, flexibility, balance and inner awareness while strengthening abs, obliques and back muscles. Muscles are strengthened and lengthened without creating bulk which is helpful in preventing and rehabilitating from injuries.

STEP BASICS Basic stepping, just like walking up and down the stairs. This full body workout uses your own body weight to tone your body. This workout is a mixture of upbeat, rhythmic stepping to music.

Fort Boise Community Center A pass at FBCC includes the exercise/ weight room, showers, dressing rooms as well as the gymnasium for drop in basketball and volleyball. Our exercise/ weight room contains stair machines, exercise bikes, universal-style weight stations, treadmills, elliptical crosstrainers, free weights and exercise benches. Passes are offered at the rates (including sales tax) listed below.

Looking for a light to moderate intensity class? This is for you! With a light cardio warm up, we use strength training to tone your body with resistance bands, light weights and body weight.

STRENGTH TRAINING A combination class for adults of all ages. A full body workout using machines and other resistance equipment featuring individual instruction on proper form and technique. Participants will make gains in muscular strength and flexibility.

YOGA – All Levels

YOGA – Gentle (50+)

This course is an introduction to a version of Yang Style Tai Chi as modified and taught by Cheng Manching. Students will learn the basic principles of Tai Chi and how to do this Tai Chi form. In addition, students will learn an 18 movement Qigong (Chi gong) routine.

Beginners welcome. Movements will be adapted to a variety of fitness levels. Class uses chairs and other props for support. Improve your flexibility, balance and strength. This class does not get down on the floor.

LIFETIME AND LEISURE (62+) BOISE TRAIN DEPOT A Boise Train Depot tour guide will highlight the history of the iconic Boise Depot and take guests through the progression of local rail service, from the railroad’s arrival in Boise to its years of operation and renovation. See the building inside and out and finish with an upclose look at the bells in the 96-foot tower.

The Pioneer Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in continuous use in Boise. The cemetery, located on the west end of Warm Springs Avenue, has been used since Boise’s founding in 1863. Dick Eardley Senior Center The Dick Eardley Senior Center is a meeting place where older adults can participate in a variety of programs, classes, activities and services focused on health, life-long learning, recreation and more. It is a lively place that connects older adults to the community, where they can take classes, share a meal, engage in games and activities, and socialize. We offer a welcome orientation and facility tour on the second Wednesday of each month beginning at 11AM. Join us! FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Boise Parks and Recreation offers financial scholarships to qualified adults age 62 and older. Scholarships can help pay for classes and activities. To find out if you qualify, apply in advance at the Dick Eardley Senior Center or Fort Boise Community Center.

CORN MAZE ADVENTURE

ALL AGES** Try out a variety of adaptive cycles at our bike fair! You will have the opportunity to try upright and recumbent hand cycles, trikes, recumbent trikes, tandem bikes and trikes. This is a great time to learn about adaptive cycles and discover what type works for you. Preregistration is not required, drop in between 10AM-2PM to try the cycles. **All ages and ability levels are welcome; youth under age 18 must attend with an adult.

AGES 16+ This program is very similar to the Adaptive Bike Ride (please see previous description), however, at this activity we will have a picnic after the 1.5 hour ride.

AGES 18+ Navigate your way through an elaborate maze cut through a local corn field. Before taking a journey through the corn maze we will eat takeout at the Senior Center. Participants must be able to stay with the group or attend with someone to assist who also enrolls.

BIRDS OF PREY TRIP

AGES 16+ Join us for an hour-long adaptive bike ride along the beautiful Boise Greenbelt. Bring your own bike or use one of our adaptive hand cycles, adult tricycles, recumbent tricycles or tandem bikes (call 208-608-7681 for bike availability and reservations). These rides are designed as supervised group rides and are not bike riding lessons; however proper trail manners and safety will be addressed. Participants must be able to follow directions and stay with the group or attend with someone who can assist. Youth under 16 are welcome but must attend with an adult.

AGES 16+ Learn about the local birds of prey and if the weather allows, watch the flight show at the World Center for Birds of Prey. Before checking out the birds we will socialize over lunch.

Volunteer ADOPT-A-HABITAT Adopt-a-Habitat is a new volunteer environmental stewardship opportunity for families, groups or businesses interested in preserving wildlife habitat in City of Boise parks and open space reserves. A minimum of four yearly outdoor workdays are requested as part of the annual commitment to the adopted habitat. Under the guidance of volunteer coordinators and ecologists, volunteer activities may include removing invasive plants, collecting and propagating native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, trash collection, native plant protection and more.

NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY – September 25 Join us on National Public Lands Day, 9:00AM – 12:00PM, in a continuing effort to rehabilitate Warm Springs Park. Fall is an amazing time of year in Boise’s parks, but the beauty comes at a price, as the leaves fall to the ground. Volunteers are sorely needed to help us clean up the huge amount of leaf litter in Boise’s parks. Volunteers are welcome to form their own teams or can be teamed up with other volunteers.

Service projects can be scheduled throughout the season. These are typically one-time efforts that range from 3 to 5 hours, depending on location and group size. Common projects include park spruce-ups, tree mulching, amenity painting and repair, trash pick-up and tree wrapping.

FALL CEMETERY TOURS – Oct. 30

HYATT HIDDEN LAKES RESERVE BIOBLITZ! – OCT. 9; 9AM – 2PM Join us as we explore the vast biodiversity of Hyatt Hidden Lakes Reserve , Saturday, Oct. 9. Work alongside local experts and environmental educators to document the plants, insects, birds and other organisms that call this unique park home. Through a

IDAHO MASTER NATURALISTS (City of Trees Chapter) The Idaho Master Naturalist program is an adult education and volunteer program, aimed at engaging our community in the stewardship of Idaho’s natural environment. One of nine chapters in the state, the City of Trees chapter provides environmental education opportunities for participants, who then volunteer their time for the chapter. Classes are held twice a month on Wednesday mornings from March through October, and the program fee is $100. Registration for the 2022 class will open in October. Birds visit backyard feeders, perch in low shrubs and on tall structures, swim in our river, lakes and ponds, nest in our trees and soar overhead. BOISE DEPOT The Boise Depot is a unique venue for weddings, parties, corporate and fundraising events. A beautiful historic Spanish-style structure, the Depot was opened in 1925 to elaborate fanfare in the capital city. The Great Hall, a 3,542-square-foot space with a soaring multi-story atrium, once served as the building’s waiting room. The original 1925 Barkalow Brothers Newsstand has been slightly restored and is featured on the west wall. With a splendid panoramic view of the Boise Front, the grounds include Platt Gardens, a lovely park with pathways, a gazebo and ponds. The Great Hall may be reserved 365 days in advance. Maximum occupancy is 300 or 165 for sit-down events.

Park Reservations Making a park reservation guarantees the location, date and reservation block for an event. A fee is required to make a reservation and gives priority use over drop-in users. Payment is required to finalize your reservation. All major credit cards, checks, cash and money orders are accepted. Reservations can be made in four-hour time blocks and include setup and cleanup (sunrise-11AM, 124PM, 5PM-sunset). Includes sales tax except for Garden/Plaza.

A refund is only provided if the user is canceling prior to ten (10) calendar days of the event, at which time a $15 processing fee will be collected. Refunds or rescheduling is not granted due to poor weather conditions or acts of nature. An event cannot be rescheduled within ten (10) calendar days of the reservation.
