Visual Thinking

Relevance : Graphic design is inherently a visual representation process. It looks at visual imagery and its communicative process in a given context in a given medium with regard to the target user.

Objective : To sensitize the students to the look at images in different contexts and mediums and its meanings, text and data etc. as visual communication aids.

PUN The making of PUN Is great double FUN. First you see ONE And read WON. Again you write TWO You hear TOO. In this battle between the eye and the ear, Are bubbles of mirth Which we often Hear. It is difficult to Decide Which sense has Won. But the ultimate victor is the superimposed PUN.

Word Pun

This is to visualize a word which should differ from the actual meaning. The interpretation of the viewer between the actual word and its literal meaning must be something else. Eg. – Butterfly. This word can be a break-down into two different meanings. Butter + Fly. One can show it as a piece of butter and two wings so that the piece can fly. Here the meaning of the butterfly is something else. A creature. The same word depicted as if it is something else. Someone can still recognize it as butter and the something related to fly. Butterfly!

To bring a SITUATION, to create a SITUATION, to get into a SITUATION.

Situational Pun

In this case the word or the theme and the visual should be the same but with more exaggeration. It should be depicted in such a way that it is made to seem greater than it really is. Eg. – Situation - Hot hairstyle. The situation is something new; a trend, a direction in general or just a tendency. It is something emerging. It can be shown as a beginning or an end. It can be shown as a Fire or a Flame. So maybe putting the flame with a nice hair-do, can make for a Hot-Hairstyle! By not visualizing the situation in a straight way, we create a different situation which is not actual but one that we can get into it by raelizing that it is more than just a Hairstyle.

Radio as a communication medium in today’s context.

Topic overview : One of the most nostalgic media outlets in terms of information, education and entertainment. The information that a radio gives impacts people’s – works, lives and choices. The radio gives people a chance to become a part of a larger dialogue. Parallelly, other communication media have expanded and the essence of the ‘listening culture’ is much reduced.

Radio – as a communication medium in todays context.

Brief : By the changing participation habits of the audiences, radio as a communication medium is dying day by day. But at the same time it is also being re-energized by the introduction of HD and Internet radio. So lets gear it up in such a way that it can again convey the modern personality and a new set of values. Target audience : Aged 25+(Male/female) Economic Class: Upper middle class Demography: Urban India Strategic Approach : Good communication requires a mix of strategies. Radio has various audiences and media professionals. Primarily people access it for news, weather, educational programming and talk shows, entertainment etc. But it is powerful medium for a message or a campaign. It connects the world of individuals. It allows you to both multi-task and be ever present in the social, economic and cultural diversity. It can allow you to take part in a discussion. It empowers people to express their opinions. A radio brings the outside world into the home.

Radio – as a communication medium in todays context.

Creative Concept : Today the radio service is not only bounded by a wooden box. It has widened and reached its peak. Its is a given that gadgets like the Mp3 player, smartphone, car audio device have a pre-installed radio player. So the task is to promote radio at the forefront of its category and help it move forward into a much more confident future. To generate the idea, I started with some illustrations showing the impact of the radio along with a copy describing the situation. Finally I visualized through a set of posters (size-A2). The colour scheme is inspired by the old wooden radio. I have also used an old radio dial and the knobs as metaphors. Below the illustration there is text that says – “keep tuning in”.
