BOLDMERE GETS SET FOR CHRISTMAS!

Boldmere Futures Partnership are happy to announce the return of the Boldmere Community Festival with Christmas lights switch on this November, proudly sponsored by Angels Day Nursery and with funding support from Sutton Coldfield Town Council. Following on from a hugely successful event this summer, the Boldmere Community Festival returns on Sunday 18th November, 2pm to 7pm, with lights switch on at 5.30pm by Alan Gardner, Channel 4’s Autistic Gardener. Visitors can enjoy a line-up of brass bands, local choirs and other musicians, all providing a festive soundtrack to the festival. In addition, a separate dance arena will host a number of performances from local dance troupes. Around the high street will be over 40 stalls including local artisans, handmade crafts, and novelty gift ideas, perfect for Christmas shopping. Also, there will be a range of free children’s craft activities, so the little ones can make their own gifts. A range of hot food retailers will be on the street too alongside a couple of festive sweet treat options, guaranteed to put a smile on your face while you watch the lights come on. Alongside the stalls, visitors will find children’s rides, including old fashioned swing boats, street entertainment from Mad Dominic, and the return of the popular Owl Man, who will have a variety of owls to see and hold. John Lymn, Chair of Boldmere Futures Partnership said: “We’re so excited to be welcoming the community back to our high street this November for our festival with Christmas lights switch on. I’d like to thank our main sponsor Angels Day Nursery and Sutton Coldfield Town Council for their support in 6

making this happen, and of course, our organising committee for putting it all together. It promises to be a truly magical time of year in Boldmere! The organisers have also stated that residents should be aware of the road closure on Sunday 18 November from 12 noon through to 9pm to help facilitate the set up and breakdown of the festival.

Find out more at www.boldmere.org/christmas-festivals where you can also apply for a pitch and sign up to volunteer to help on the day.

NEW SCHEME TO SUPPORT OUR ELDERLY COMMUNITY The Sutton Coldfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme is a new initiative designed to help older people in the town lead independent, happy and healthy lives. Between now and January 2019, Age Concern Birmingham and Compass Support will be having conversations with local community groups and organisations in order to build up a picture of all of the activities and opportunities which are currently available to the older community. Part of this conversation will also be around any support that groups might need to enable them to continue, or even develop, the great work they do in Sutton Coldfield. An important part of the project is helping to build strong links between members of our local social work team and the local community, to ensure that they are well-placed to help the people they work with access opportunities that match their interests and improve their wellbeing. As the database that is being collated will also be available online to anyone looking to discover what is available for older people in the area, the scheme is a great way for local groups to promote themselves and the activities they run. As part of the initiative, Age Concern Birmingham and Compass Support are inviting local groups and organisations to join them at one of their upcoming drop-in events. The first of these is on Tuesday 23rd October between 12pm and 2pm at Falcon Lodge Community Hub, Church Hill Road, Sutton Coldfield, B75 7LB. Light refreshments will be available at the event, which is open to anyone who would like to find out more about the initiative. For further information on the Sutton Coldfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme, please contact Kate Gomez on 0121 362 3656 or email K.Gomez@ageconcernbirmingham.org.uk

MAYOR FIRES THE STARTING GUN FOR BULLETS’ BIG RUN West Midlands Mayor Andy Street put on his running shoes to take part in the Boldmere Bullets’ Big Run – after officially starting the charity event in Sutton Park. Mr Street was one of 230 entrants who signed up for the third annual run on Sunday, September 9, which raised money for Sutton charity Acacia Family Support. Mr Street said: “Boldmere Bullets are a fantastic organisation – they have got so many people involved in healthy activities. The run also raised money for an important cause, which made it even more worthwhile.” “Boldmere is very much an example of an area with a strong economy and real spirit. It has community groups like the Bullets, unique locally-organised events like the music festival and Christmas lights, and a bustling, vibrant shopping area.” “As we work to revive the West Midlands, Boldmere is one of the places that shows how community involvement and pride can make a real difference to people’s lives.” For further info about Andy Street, contact Gary Phelps on 07720 403036 or email garyphelpscomms@outlook.com 16

All-Star Cast Revealed for Lichfield Garrick Pantomime Last month The Lichfield Garrick Theatre officially launched its hugely popular Christmas Pantomime for 2018/2019, Dick Whittington! The Garrick panto cast from across the UK turned out to mark the start of the pantomime season in the build-up to the opening night on 29 November. Startled passers-by came face to face with infamous characters in full panto-costume as they posed for photographers outside the theatre. As well as returning Garrick favourites Sam Rabone as Dolly the Cook and Ben Thornton as Silly Billy, Katrina Bryan (CBeebies’ Nina and the Neurons) will play the magical Fairy Bowbells in this year’s festive extravaganza. They are joined by seasoned professionals Ashley Emerson as Dick Whittington, Ieuan Rhys as Alderman Fitzwarren, Joanne Heywood as the baddie Queen Rat, Becca Lane as Alice Fitzwarren, and Lucy Parry as Tommy the Cat. They will be supported by The Garrick’s juvenile company which gives local young people the chance to perform in an all-singing, all-dancing professional production. Sam Rabone, Panto Dame and Director of Dick Whittington said: “It’s nearly that time of year again and boy I can’t wait to get started. This fat bloke in a dress has her dream job this year... owner of a sweet shop and cake baker on the side!” “Katrina is just fabulous and I can’t wait to see her cast her magic over the audiences of Lichfield. And who’d have thought it… the garlic bread to my lasagne, the Yorkshire pudding to my beef, the lemon to my meringue - Ben Thornton is back too! Oh boy, have we got some treats for you, the BIGGEST slosh scene yet. This year I’m also directing and I can’t wait to bring the funniest and biggest panto so far to The Garrick, see you all soon!” Dick Whittington opens at The Garrick Theatre on Thursday 29 November 2018 and runs until Saturday 5 January 2019. Prices start from £14.50 for children and £19.50 for adults. Tickets can be booked online at www.lichfieldgarrick.com, in person at the Box Office or by calling 01543 412121. 22
