Thousands gather on streets of Boldmere for festival

Photos by Richard T Harris Photography

The Boldmere Community festival with Christmas Lights Switch On saw nearly 10,000 people take to Boldmere’s thriving high street. At its peak, there were estimated to be 6,500 people gathered to watch Channel 4’s Autistic Gardener, Alan Gardner, switch on the Christmas lights. A tradition that started in 2012 after winning a Government backed initiative by Mary Portas to enhance high streets, led by Pippa Goode and Martin Pedley with a few market stalls, has flourished into Sutton’s biggest lights switch on event with two live musical entertainment stages, a dance zone and over 80 Christmas market stalls. Musical entertainment was provided by Bishop Vesey Grammar School’s band, Sutton Coldfield Community Choir, Sutton Coldfield Tuneless Choir and headline acts First Request (part of Real Life church), Ire-Ish and Rosie O’Sullivan. Crowds were also entertained with a glimpse of Highbury Theatre’s pantomime Aladdin. Event organiser Paul Long said “The whole event epitomises what Boldmere is about – community. We have an unpaid team that spends many weeks putting the festival together and an even bigger team that help out on the day, including volunteers from Bishop Vesey Grammar School and photographers from Sutton Coldfield College. Boldmere’s high street is thriving because people love to shop locally to support our independent traders. We are very blessed to live in such a great place. It was heartening to hear so many people thanking us for an enjoyable day out.” John Lymn, Chair of Boldmere Futures Partnership which is the organisation responsible for putting on the event said “This was the best Christmas event 6

Win a Family Ticket to Empire Cinema Set in a beautiful art deco building which was first opened in 1936, Empire Cinema Sutton Coldfield is a great destination for a family trip out to the movies. With four screens showing a great range of films including Hollywood blockbusters, classic reruns, and the newest animations, Empire Cinema is a great place for film-loving families to visit; especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings when they screen family films at pocket money prices! The Empire Cinema also screens a range of live events throughout the year which effectively turns the cinema into a theatre. Be there in the audience as you watch a production from the likes of The RSC, The Royal Opera House and The National Theatre, as they perform live on stage. The Grade II listed building was one of the UK’s original art deco cinemas and it’s great to see that a lot of the original architecture is still visible both inside and out. However, alongside the history, the cinema boasts all the features a 21st Century film-lover desires like self-service ticket machines, digital projection system, 3D films and online booking. This issue we have teamed up with Empire Sutton Coldfield to offer you the chance to win a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) to the film of your choice. For your chance to win, please send your contact details on an email entitled ‘Empire Cinema Competition’ no later than Friday 25th January 2019. 12
