Sutton Coldfield Community Games Are Back! Sutton Coldfield Community Games returns this July (13th & 14th) for their seventh year. The first event was held during the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics and the sun shone down and enough fun was had to make the organisers think they should do it again!
What are the Sutton Coldfield Community Games? Perhaps the easiest way to describe it is as a village fete combined with a school’s sports day. Run by volunteers and with all the activities provided free of charge by local sports clubs, groups and associations, the Sutton Games is a true community event with a simple aim: to give everyone, whether young or old, an opportunity to try their hand at the enormous variety of sports played and activities enjoyed in and around Sutton Coldfield. The weekend is designed to be completely interactive – visitors can try everything from athletics to agility games, bowls to Boccia, dance to dodgeball, sailing to skating, tennis to trampolining… all completely free of charge and without any commitment. If you’re inspired to take something further, it’s over to you! 6
World Record attempt At this year’s Sutton Coldfield Community Games, Olympian and World Champion discus thrower, Kevin Brown, will be attempting a world record attempt to pull a 2-tonne vehicle 100m in under 2 minutes 40 seconds! Come along and support Kevin in his attempt and hopefully watch a world record be broken!
More info For more information, visit suttongames.co.uk and be sure to follow @SuttonGames on Facebook and Twitter. The Sutton Games are made possible by a core team of volunteer organisers and several hundred volunteer event providers. It is funded via a donation from the Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust and the generous sponsorship of six local organisations: Sutton Coldfield Town Council, WAA Chosen, Star Cars & Coaches, Sutton Spas and West Midlands Railway. Their generosity means the organisers can continue to provide the weekend for free.

On Your Bike in Boldmere! On Your Bike is a family owned and run chain of bicycle shops that is opening their Boldmere Store in June. They cater for a wide spectrum of cyclists from children’s first bikes and scooters, to the novice through to the enthusiast and from the Road Cyclist to the Mountain Biker. They offer quality bike brands including Brompton, Trek, Whyte, Orro and Frog, and also stock a wide range of clothing and helmets along with an extensive range of parts and accessories. To keep your bicycle in top condition, On Your Bike has large workshop facilities and Cytech qualified mechanics who can maintain and repair all makes of bike. They also operate one of the largest bike rental and hire fleets in Birmingham which can be hired by the day or week, with a choice from hybrids, road and even electric bikes. I sat down with the Manager, Stuart, for a quick chat‌ Robin: How long has On Your Bike been in business? Stuart: On Your Bike was started in 1983 and have been trading in Birmingham since the late 1980s, firstly at Priory Queensway and, for the last 15 years, in Digbeth. Why are you moving from your city centre location up to Boldmere? Our shop in Digbeth is in an area scheduled for redevelopment so we have taken this opportunity to move to a busy, vibrant High Street which we feel offers a lot of potential for our business.
What was it that attracted you to Boldmere? One of our staff members lives in Boldmere and his children attend the local school so it’s an area we feel we know well. The proximity to Sutton Park will work well for us and we know this part of Birmingham as a hotbed for cycling with both traditional and newer cycling clubs in the area. What is your biggest hope for the new store in Boldmere? We hope to become a real part of the community. In time we will to offer bike rental, store rides and workshop classes as well as the things like sales and servicing that people normally associate with a bike shop. Our business is family owned and run and many of us have children who cycle so can offer our advice and expertise about family cycling too. What does the future hold for On Your Bike? In time we hope to grow our business and become a valued part of the community. We would love to see more people on bikes; we have been a key partner working with Birmingham City Council delivering the Bike North Birmingham project and more recently the Big Birmingham Bikes. In short, we love bikes and want to share that love!
WIN – Micro Scooter Sprite Enter our On Your Bike scooter competition to win this amazing children’s scooter worth £99.95 (suitable for ages 5-12). Visit www.boldmerepages.co.uk/competitions Closing date is Friday 19th July

Take Up A New Sport This Summer If this Summer of Sport has inspired you to take up a new sport, here’s our guide to four sports you could try and the local teams to contact.
Tennis Tennis is an addictive and fun way to get fit and there are so many different options for people of all ages and abilities to take part. There are over 20,000 tennis courts in the United Kingdom. Thousands of clubs and park courts will also provide racquets and balls if you don’t have your own. Tennis will give you an all-round workout and help you stay fit, building your leg muscles as you run around the court. You will also improve your hand-eye co-ordination skills and work your arm and shoulder muscles as you hit and return the ball. Boldmere Tennis Club info@boldmeretennisclub.org.uk www.boldmeretennisclub.org.uk
Cricket With the Cricket World Cup being hosted by England & Wales this summer, why not try out this game of brilliant intricacy and variety? Cricket has evolved in recent years and can be adapted for any age, ability, or type of weather. Cricket can be explosive, and offers a good workout, especially if you’re a big-hitting batsman or a fast bowler in shorter formats. Disability cricket is popular across the UK, with a growing number of local, regional and national teams. Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club suttoncoldfieldcricketclub.weebly.com 18
Cycling From young children on stabilisers, through to adults going for long countryside rides, cycling is for everyone. Cycling to work is also one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine. Road cycling, the most common form of cycling, is simply riding a bike outside for exercise, sport or to get from A to B. Track cycling adds a competitive element and sees riders race around a specialist track at high speeds. Boldmere Bullets www.boldmerebullets.com info@boldmerebullets.com
Swimming One of the nation’s most popular activities, swimming is for anyone and everyone. From chilling out on the inflatables to doing several laps in the deep end, it’s hard not to love a dip in the pool. Learning to swim is an important life skill and a great way to keep active, hundreds of thousands of people in the UK use swimming as a way to keep fit, relax and have fun. Fly away those Bingo Wings Have you been to your wardrobe lately only to find your “go to” outfit has long sleeves to hide your arms? Now that summer is here you want to show off your arms, not hide them away! Don’t worry, help is here! Many women miss out on the benefits of strength training out of fear of developing bulging muscles. This is a misconception. According to the Women’s Heart Foundation, high levels of oestrogen make it very difficult for women to become overly muscular. When women lift weights, the changes to their muscles are generally related to tone, strength, and endurance rather than size. The resulting look is firm, feminine toning, not bulky masculine muscles Here are 6 exercises you can do at home, to help enhance the strength of your arms and firm up that problem area for so many of us. Do these at least 3 times per week, 3 sets of 10 reps then rest for 30 seconds between sets.
