IT'S ALLOWED AGAIN! Many opticians yearn to visit a fair 'the old-fashioned way', without admission tests or obligatory walking directions, and where you can view new collections and new brands without worrying, talk to suppliers or network with your fellow opticians and of course enjoy the freedom and inspiration. We are finally allowed again! A lot has happened in the world in those two years. Many industries have had a hard time and some companies have had to pull the plug. Fortunately, the economy is recovering miraculously fast. We will have to support the companies that have been hit hardest in order to keep our society beautiful. Going away for the weekend or on holiday more often, go to a restaurant or a pub and visit the cultural and event sector. There are worse things to do, aren't there? The retail sector has also had a hard time, but fortunately money is being spent there again. Often at bargain prices because the stock or 'old' collection has to be sold quickly. Still, some branches have been lucky in those two years, especially producers of medical equipment, food producers, webshops, DIY stores and garden centres and of course the essential sector: optics. It is often extremely busy in many optical stores and a lot of glasses are sold. Time is short, unfortunately there are also too few hands on the shop floor to do anything about it. The shortage of staff in almost all industries causes a (sometimes too) high workload in many optical stores. As a result, work is often left unfinished and there is often no time to receive representatives to supplement the collections. Fortunately, the necessary items can often be ordered online. But real entrepreneurs still want to stay up-to-date with all the developments in the market. Also, there is often a need for new brands to distinguish you as an entrepreneur from your competitors. Online it is quite difficult to find the right brand you are looking for. That is why physical fairs remain of great importance for optics entrepreneurs. The chance to see or buy many brands in

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR

two days, to experience the quality, to speak with the representatives or the designers remains essential in our industry. Essential to grow or stay ahead of the rapidly changing supply and demand in the world. Therefore we believe that the renewed Dutch optics fair Bold Optical Fair is an added value for you, nice to visit in the Netherlands a well organized fair where many beautiful high-end, commercial but also special brands will be present. In the field of glass and equipment you can also experience the latest innovations and developments. At Bold you will mainly find brands in the mid and high segments. We have been looking for a new spacious location in the Netherlands and came across the amazingly beautiful Taets Art & Event Park, which is situated in the middle of the Randstad and houses more than 600 independent opticians. For some opticians it will now be closer than Nijkerk, for some a bit further. But let's face it, the Netherlands is not that big and if there is a nice fair abroad, we drive there too. So we will provide a very well-organised fair that you will not want to miss and all that just for you. So come to Bold, a new stylish location with large open exhibition areas with beautiful brands that are happy to welcome you on 20 & 21 March 2022. For the Dutch optician, the new location is easily accessible by car. You can park for free in a large parking lot directly in front of the main entrance. For visitors from abroad, Bold is easy to reach within half an hour from Schiphol Airport and from Amsterdam Central Station. For opticians from Belgium and from the border area of Germany, Zaandam is also easy to drive to. We hope to see you soon!

With kind regards, Terressa & Walter

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

After two years of general measures and restrictions due to the Corona pandemic with partial and hard lockdowns, quarantine obligations, home working advice, emergency support and of course the wellknown phrase: 'wash your hands a lot - keep 1.5 metres away - wear a mouth mask', (almost) everything is allowed to go back to the way it used to be. Back to the old normal.

FICTION BY L.A.EYEWORKS

by the house of l.a.Eyeworks FICTION is off to a great start in Europe with the launch of its debut collection in Fall 2019. For l.a.Eyeworks fans among

us, it will not have escaped our notice that the FICTION collection is designed under the creative direction of desig-

ners Gai Gherardi and Barbara McReynolds of l.a.Eyeworks. They characterize originality with innovative designs and production techniques. The contemporary frames are made from fine sustainable bio-acetates and stainless steel. Less lavish than big sister l.a.Eyeworks, Fiction is the ideal collection that offers accessibility in both price, color and design.

Inspired by africa, handmade in italy L.G.R, the luxury eyewear brand founded by Luca Gnecchi Ruscone, introduces the Palmerie Collection: a collection of three new models available in optical and sun. The Palmerie Collection is inspired by the atmospheres and nuances of the African deserts. The frames, made of 10 mm thick Italian acetate of the highest quality, enhance everyone's character and personality through their distinct shape. Palmerie Collection sunglasses are characterized by new light-colored gradient lenses. The inside of the

temples show new symbols such as running Giraffes and our signature quote: "Inspired by Africa, Handmade in Italy". With this collection also a new color has been introduced, namely light dotted Havana on the temples combined with shiny black on the front. Of course all frames are completely handmade in Italy.

YEARS ZEISS 2022 is a special year for ZEISS. 175 years ago, ZEISS was founded by Carl Zeiss in Jena. A good time to look back at the successful past and look ahead to how ZEISS is shaping the future of optics together with its partners.

Despite the many changes the world has undergone in the past 175 years, one thing has remained the same: together, we push the limits of our imagination. With a passion for excellence, we create value for our customers and inspire the world to see in new ways.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

Since ZEISS was founded 175 years ago, curiosity, passion and precision have inspired us, our customers and our partners. Together, we have succeeded time and again in opening up new perspectives, turning great challenges into great opportunities and making the impossible possible.

25

CONSTANT INNOVATIONS The innovative strength of ZEISS stems from the fact that the company is owned by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, which ensures that all profits are kept within the company and a significant proportion of these are invested in Research & Development. The introduction of Punktal® in 1912, a revolutionary precision lens that would become the basis for all modern lenses, was just the beginning. Consumer needs lead to the innovations that ZEISS brings to market every year. These innovations are now a fixture in the portfolio. Digital lenses (2014), DriveSafe lenses (2015), EnergizeMe lenses (2017), UVProtectTM Technology (2018), VISUFIT 1000 (2019) and SmartLife lenses (2020) are excellent examples.

Virtual Try-On @Home (2021) is the latest platform from ZEISS which offers your customer an omnichannel experience by combining a unique digital customer journey with your fitting and consulting expertise. Your customer gets the best of both worlds. ZEISS VIRTUAL TRY-ON @HOME The omnichannel experience begins in-store with the creation of a personal 3D avatar using ZEISS VISUFIT 1000. The nine cameras take a 180° image of the customer's face with a single shot. The Avatar is then used for virtual fitting of frames in-store or from another location using ZEISS Virtual Try-on @Home. Here, various frames are selected from a virtual catalog. Artificial Intelligence provides the initial recommendation of suitable frames based on facial characteristics. The highly accurate centering is performed by the eye care professional in-store or after the customer has selected a frame online using the Avatar.

EYEVAN 7285

Japanese works of art In 1972, EYEVAN started with a concept of "eyewear to dress as a fashion item" and in 1985 it made a sensational world debut. EYEVAN is known for its timeless design and when we look at handwritten drawings or archives of EYEVAN, we can see the true craftsmanship of Japan and the creativity and enthusiasm of the design team of those days. In 2013, about 40 years after its launch, a new design team reconstructed the EYEVAN 7285 brand based on the archives of EYEVAN and expressed what they find absolutely beautiful.

eyewear. For example, the tempels come from French cutlery from the 1940s, the metal frame comes from the structure of eye test equipment from the 1970s, and the parts are inspired by arabesque patterns of ancient Japanese tempels. EYEVAN 7285's products are made through the combination of craftsman's handiwork and state-of-the-art machinery in Sabae, Fukui prefecture. Many of his designs seem simple at first glance, actually artistic. It can be said that they are more like works of art than industrial products.

The design sources are EYEVAN's archives, all kinds of things like vintage glasses, telescopes, hand mirrors and old tools that our original design team collected and artifacts like building

TOM FORD

Powerful modernity and glamorous allure reflect both vintage and current references. Ford's defining aesthetic found its roots during his youth in the 1970s. That decade continues to influence his work in designs such as the oversized, angular Jacquetta and the Fonda, with soft angles that put a new spin on "round." Eccentricity can be found in the Wyatt, a hip update of the 1950s-inspired cat-eye frame. An alternative, modernist sensibility is

expressed in different ways in the bold geometry of the Renee and in the minimalist Oscar, a lightweight, flat frame with folding temples that easily fits in a breast pocket. Tom Ford Eyewear combines Ford's masterful hands-on design with Made-in-Italy craftsmanship. Luxurious materials and the signature, slender "T" logo add sophistication to even the most flamboyant shapes. The optical eyewear utilizes innovative Blue Block lens technology that improves visual comfort and reduces eye strain often resulting from prolonged screen work. INTERVIEW BLAKE KUWAHARA

BLAKE KUWAHARA

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

TEKST: MAARTEN WEIDEMA

48

Hi Blake, we have known each other for years and I consider you a personal friend, but could you introduce yourself a little to readers who may not yet know you? Thank you. Likewise. I grew up in a creative family - my mother and grandmother were both artists, but I followed a more academic path and received my first degree in psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and my doctorate in optometry from the University of California, Berkeley (CAL). While in college, I was still able to nurture my creative side by interning with an interior designer and working as a creative director for a CAL and UCLA publication. After working in private practice for 3 years, I realized that I no longer wanted to spend 8 hours a day in a dark room seeing patients and needed a more creative outlet. It just so happened that an LA-based eyewear company, Wilshire Designs/Liz Claiborne Optics, was looking for a creative director. Although I had a passion for eyewear, I had no hands-on experience designing eyewear. The owner of the company, Dick Haft, thought I had the aesthetic basics and that he could teach me the technical aspects of design. I took a risk by leaving my practice to start a whole new career, and they took a big risk with me! Dick also gave me the opportunity to start my own brand, KATA Eyewear. I really owe my entry into the design side of our industry to him. You were born and raised in Los Angeles, a city "notorious" for its amazing eyewear designers. Did you connect with them from the beginning? I knew Alex Vance of BADA because we shared the same European agent, and Gai Gherardi and Barbara McReynolds of LA Eyeworks were among our first accounts. I'm getting a day older myself, but this goes all the way back to 1992! You studied optometry, so your connection to the optical industry is obvious, but for some reason you liked being at the front of the store more than working in the lab in the back. Was that because of the glasses, the people or both? I loved working with my patients, but the constraints of sitting in a dark exam room most of the day and a tight patient schedule were not for me. Of course, I was more attracted to the fashion/sales side of our practice than the clinical side.

Interview

BLAKE KUWAHARA Why did you decide to start designing eyewear yourself? When I found out I wanted to pursue a different career path, I explored everything from interior design to window design. It was pure luck that I came across the ad from Wilshire Designs that made me start designing eyewear. Does your background as an optometrist still influence your design work? Absolutely. I am very pragmatic when designing, because at the end of the day, frames contain prescription lenses and need to fit properly. I want to make sure my eyewear is ergonomically correct, has the right fit values and optical centering, and is well designed and balanced. This is just as important to me as the aesthetic side. Eyewear can't just look good, it has to fit well.

I see a strong Japanese influence in your eyewear designs. Can you tell me how Japanese culture influences your work? I am 4th generation Japanese-American. My great-grandparents emigrated from Japan to the US at the turn of the last century. My mother's parents were both born in the US.

Although I grew up in Los Angeles, I think there is still a strong Japanese sensibility in my aesthetic. I appreciate things that have a "soul," that are handmade, and that are well put together. Japanese also tend to be very precise and understated. I think that frugality in design also influences my work.

Your "frame-in-a-frame" design is exceptional. What inspired you to make that and how difficult is it to get such an intricate construction produced? Many of my friends are in the creative field: architects, photographers, designers of all kinds. We all have a creative side to what we do professionally, but we also have a business side. We were looking for glasses that fit both sides. One day I was shopping and saw an antique Chinese wooden stool encased in a clear block of plastic. It was a "stool-in-a-stool." I thought this was brilliant. Taking something familiar and making it fresh and new by changing the outside. I thought this was a perfect way to express my concept.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

You've done great work with Kata and several licensed brands like John Varvatos and Carolina Herrera. Do you still design for other brands or are you just focused on Blake Kuwahara now. In addition to Blake Kuwahara Eyewear, I have a separate design firm, Focus Group West. We are a design collective and have been together for 12 years. Besides me, there are two other eyewear designers, two graphic designers, two architects, two public relations agents and two project managers. We do everything from creating brands (the design concept, product design, marketing, etc.) to discreet projects such as logos, displays and retail spaces. As Blake Kuwahara Eyewear grows, we become more selective in taking on new external projects, but we continue to design for others.

49

The manufacturing process was extremely difficult to master for a number of reasons. The front piece and tempels were made from two separate components: The inner form and the outer form. We have to make sure that there are no air bubbles and no separation between the two forms. Also, acetate with different colors and textures has different shrinkage rates, so we need to calculate that when combining two different materials. Certain colors may also bleed when combined. The curing time to ensure stability is already more than two months. So there are a lot of factors just in making this collection!

What material do you prefer to work with? Each material has different advantages and disadvantages. At KATA, I worked mainly with metal and injection molding. When I launched Blake Kuwahara Eyewear, I wanted to explore how I could bring something different with handmade acetate. How do your eyewear designs stand out from other brands? I think the true mark of a brand is that you can identify it without a logo. I like to think that we have created a unique aesthetic that is recognizable at first glance and that you can recognize even blindfolded by touching and feeling our frames. My overall aesthetic is distinctive but understated, artful yet wearable. What is your creative process? Whenever I see something that piques my interest, I take a picture of it and put it in a folder on my phone. This could be something from a magazine, or something I come across while traveling or at a flea market. When it's time to put together a collection, I flip through my folders and start combining ideas. From there, the rough sketches are turned into design drawings and then technical CAD drawings before being turned into prototypes.

What inspires you while designing. Is it technology, architecture, materials or more personally driven, like a face shape or the personality of the potential wearer? It's a combination of all those things. There are practical considerations like size and shape to make sure the collection is well-rounded. There is also an intuitive component that comes into play, as I am designing more than a year before launch. So it's not about what someone wants now, but what they will want a year from now. And there's the personal component of what me and my friends want to wear! After more than three decades of designing, do you recognize a particular trend in your own work? Or are you constantly reinventing yourself? People have said that they see my "fingerprints" on my work, regardless of the brand or when it was designed. I take that as a compliment. I like to think that there is an overarching aesthetic and through-line in what I design. That said, I also like to explore new ideas and concepts that may have nothing to do with what I have done before. Blake Kuwahara Eyewear's Grey Label collection is a good example. It has a very different concept and construction, yet there is still design continuity with my core collection.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

After all your adventures with so many brands and your own brand name, do you see any other projects in the future? There are always things I think about in terms of new concepts and brand extensions. But I have to think about the time and energy it takes to achieve output for new initiatives instead of enjoying other things in life. It's about prioritizing what's important at this stage of my life and balancing that with other pursuits outside of business.

50

Everywhere I go, I always seem to run into you. Is travel an important part of your life? As I'm sure with you, travel was definitely a big part of my life before COVID! I think most people involved in the design side of our business would agree. I was in Asia every 4-6 weeks and in Europe every two months and traveling domestically in between. During the pandemic, that pretty much stopped.

Interview

BLAKE KUWAHARA

getting on a bike and riding through the neighborhoods of Paris. It was a totally different experience. Tokyo is also very special to me because of its culture, food, architecture and vintage clothing stores. Interestingly, I used to hate Bangkok because I found it too chaotic, but I have embraced that now. I really miss the street food and antique markets there.

I read that you see Paris in a different way now after going there with your partner. I had the same thing when I was there with my fiancé, even though I visited about 20 Silmos. You're from LA yourself, but what other cities have a special place in your heart. It's always best to see a city through the eyes of someone who lives there. I've never been one to visit all the "touristy" spots and I prefer remote places. My first date with Patrick was

What do you do when you're not at work? Before the pandemic, traveling took up most of my free time. Now that I'm spending more time at home, I've started cooking and taking advantage of all the great hiking trails right outside my house. As much as I enjoy nesting, I can't wait to travel again! Cooking is also my hobby, so I'll definitely be coming to Sausalito sometime to cook for you, thanks for your time Blake and see you in New York!

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

What do I always hear about you and the flea markets? Is that your "Happy Place"? Wow, do you even know that! Yes, I love a good market! Wherever and whenever I traveled, I always found a flea market to go to on the weekends. I usually don't go with a particular thing in mind to find. I just enjoy wandering them. I am attracted to things that have "soul", patina and a story. Flea markets are definitely my weakness!

I saw some pictures of your house in Sausalito, it looked amazing! Did you do most of the interior design yourself? Can you tell me anything about that project? I split my time between LA (West Hollywood) and San Francisco (Sausalito.) My home in West Hollywood is mid-century modern and in a tall building above bustling Sunset Boulevard. My house in Sausalito is very different. It was built in 1930 and has a Mediterranean aesthetic. I was only the second owner and when I bought the property, it needed a lot of work. It has been a slow process, but a labor of love. The design intent was to keep the overall charm and aesthetic of the original house, but modernize it. The downstairs is a bit more industrial with cement floors and exposed beams. The house has a beautiful view of San Francisco Bay and is very quiet. It's where most of my flea market finds end up!

through my eyes

Third Christmas Day, back to reality. The leftover Christmas wreaths tipped over the fence, the Christmas tree has gone to the pruning waste. I open the laptop and next to me on the table a box of mouth caps is staring at me in a somewhat bored way. Mouth caps and columns, impossible, I hear next to me. It is not possible to write a column on mouth caps without polarizing and kicking nobody in the ass. I like the idea of kicking, but I like the adage - everything is completely impossible until you try it.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

Because if mouthguards have taught me one thing, it's that contact lenses are a welcome solution for the most avid glasses wearers. Because contact lenses and fogging? But somewhere it also presented unforeseen opportunities, because someone once taught me that glasses are the first thing people look at as soon as one is worn, and that very part is under pressure now with a mouthguard society. The past year taught me to look again at faces, structures and mouth caps.

60

Mouth caps appear to conceal a great deal of expression, whether it is a playful smile, sarcasm, bitter anger, or excitement. Although eyes speak, aren't they leading in expression and from that point of view, and non-fogging lenses? Those also added quite little in the end. Last year, each face was a new blank canvas, unformed by lines and free of expression. It taught me to create expression by letting frames speak. To let color dominate, to let the lines play freely, it created new clients with a renewed self-image. However, it also taught me that my

collections were not nearly enough, it just wasn't quite enough. I am personally looking forward to this year's BOLD, I will be there with empty canvases in my head. I am going to look at where architecture meets the wearability of a frame, how the colors move on the countless tables covered with white carpets. The current collections as we have them now need a 2022 update. We need that we want to start looking at faces differently, with or without a hood on. It is important to realize that in the coming years we will determine how we shape people's expression. After all, glasses really do determine that first impression, not that mouth mask. This year at BOLD 2022, with so many suppliers you can indulge yourself, prepare your collections for 2022 and surprise your customers. We look forward to seeing you this year! Today the tenth column for BOLD, from fall in 2017, to spring in 2022. One was already cool in 2017, let alone a dozen. A dozen full of peaks and valleys, the euphoria of seeing it posted, the stress eating binges when the writing didn't come naturally (my goodness the bitterballs still come up when I think back). Anyway, three thanks! Kind regards, Ferdinand

HISTOIRE DE VOIR

Silmo D'or winner 2021

Initially Stephane was an optician, but he did not like the technical and paramedical side of the profession. So he started sketching glasses designs to work as a designer for a large manufacturer. Until the day when, in the shoemaker's workshop of one of his friends, he discovered a hard, thick leather that is normally used to make the soles. He then decided to replace the traditional plastic eyeglass frames with leather sections. It resulted in extraordinary eyewear, completely

handmade, flexible and ultra-light. When we wear them, we don't even feel them. Stephane started his own brand in 1993 and opened his own Histoire de Voir atelier in Paris, and began designing eyewear in infinite variations in leather of all colors, patent leather or metallized. Also in

crocodile and python leather and always with a playful detail, such as interchangeable feathers, or a cap with an integrated mask. CONTACT New International Vision hdv@histoire-de-voir.com

During his ten-year stay there, he discovered the eyewear world and participated in the development of the collections of Lacoste, L'Amy and Nina Ricci. Upon returning to France, his own creative and entrepreneurial spirit led him to the idea of designing himself. He had a new goal in mind: to liberate his personal inspiration and create his own collection. A certain style and the recognizable proportions of good products are timeless: A classic in optics fashion remains a classic in optics fashion. All good things last. Just like heroes, they also last forever. Earlier I had the opportunity to debut at Bold with the 8mm collection. Last Bold with the aluminum line. This edition I am introducing my 4mm acetate collection that is bursting with character in addition to its thinness. The 6mm acetate plates (Japanese or high density Italian) are milled back to 4mm, where the functional arch at the nose can be made in it without heat. Very cool about this process is that very

tight lines can be maintained in the rawer edition, here the CNC lines are still visible and the frames are post-treated by sandblasting for a perfect mix

MOVITRA

The best protection for your glasses We decided to join forces and combine our creativity to bring an intuition to life and meet a need that had never been identified before. And so our brand was born. Movitra was born from the meeting of three creative minds, three professionals and friends: Filippo, Giuseppe and Diego.

It's like walking on a straight road with no surprises and suddenly a detour brings unknowns, new possibilities and unexpected scenarios on your path. Movitra gets its name from the Latin "Movere", meaning movement, and "Vitra", meaning glass. So a lens that moves, fluid, dynamic, like a stream of water that cannot be stopped, like passion and the courage to dare. Movitra was born in 2016 in an apartment in Milan, on a day that seems like any other. But even before that, it was born on a beach, on a sunny afternoon. A woman bends down to pick up her child and her glasses fall to the floor, with the lenses facing the ground. Irreparable scratches. For many, it is

yet another situation; for the woman, it is an annoyance that must be remedied. For the founders of Movitra, it is the fuse that sets in motion a beautiful journey.

VIOROU The origin of "VioRou" is "Du violet au rouge", which translates in French to "from violet to red". This means: the seven colors that humans perceive, which is also directly the concept of VioRou; seven color glasses.

One sees seven colors on the visible light spectrum. Each color makes you think of something. For example, violet is seen as the color of nobility and red is the color of passion.Every person is unique, every face is different. And this face you can change with color. Color can change the image of a person. Whether this is a good image, a bad image, an image that the person wants to give or maybe an image that the person least expects. A frame represents the central point of your face. VioRou believes that a frame is an essential part of creating different faces, expressions and character traits, but at the same time serves as an item used for people to take a step outside of their current

self. VioRou's frames were born out of a desire to brighten up eyeglass wearers and to use color eyeglasses to change and try new styles. CONTACT CREATIEF BRILLEN info@creatiefbrillen.nl +31(0)318482500 www.creatiefbrillen.nl

STEVE MCQUEE STEVE MCQUEEN

GILLES MACALUSO

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

TEKST: MAARTEN WEIDEMA

90

Hello Gilles, tell us about yourself and your current role at Steve McQueen Eyewear! After graduating in optics, I started working as an optician but soon became an agent for well-known designer brands. In 2004, I founded my own company specialising in the distribution of designer collections. Twelve years later, in 2016, I founded MMC'Eyewear to develop and distribute my own collections. Nowadays, with the Steve McQueen Eyewear brand, I try to focus more on design. What inspired you to choose the "king of cool" as the namesake for this eyewear collection? My business partner and friend Pierre joined me in 2018 with the goal of developing MMC'Eyewear through brands with a strong universe and image. Pierre and I are undisputed fans of SMQ and fans of vintage cars and motorbikes and finally motorsport fans, so when we asked ourselves what men generally like or what they would like to look like, the name of Steve McQueen came across as a no-brainer. We can say that many people around the world love his lifestyle. It is still so relevant today. But first of all, this adventure was a strong company enriched by shared passions and then came the idea of an eyewear collection dedicated to "The King of Cool". Steve McQueen Eyewear is not just an eyewear brand, it is a state of mind. Steve McQueen is such an iconic name and great personality that it must be very difficult to match eyewear styles with such a character. How did you come up with these cool styles? Steve McQueen Eyewear is not just an eyewear collection, it's a real state of mind. The frames are not just frames, they are the incarnation of Steve McQueen. Each model bears a name as a tribute to SMQ's life: a place, a memory, something important in his life, sometimes just a small detail unknown to most. Pierre and I are very happy to work on a universe of and about someone we are passionate about. I put myself in Steve McQueen's life to create something that he would love and be proud to wear. Creating a Steve McQueen frame is like a journey through his life. There is nothing more gratifying for fans like us.

Interview

STEVE MCQUEEN

I read that the collection is also based on the values of friendship, family and simplicity. How can we see this in the frame designs? Friendship is the basis of history. Family is the value we want to preserve through our design and simplicity, because we know that simplicity is timeless like Steve McQueen was. We make the frames with the same spirit, sincerity in design and quality of material we choose. People who are passionate about the cars understand the details that you can't necessarily see at first, but that characterise beautiful models. We want to make the wearer happy because they understand that it takes time to develop such a detailed product with such specific and high quality materials. We also want to make sure that people who wear our frames feel good and proud of them. Each model is reviewed and approved by Steve's son Chad McQueen before going into production. Steve was known as a big car enthusiast; can we find car-inspired parts as well? All of our eyewear designs are based on Steve McQueen's car and motorbike designs. The hinge is a specific design derived from the curves of the Porsche Speedster 356. The end tips

also have small details - they are shaped like the tank of the Triumph Bonneville T100. In addition, some frames have a specific colour, such as the Cool or the Indian-SP which are green like the 1968 Ford Mustang in Bullitt, or the Liberty-SP in slate grey, like the Porsche 911.

Is the McQueen family still involved in this new adventure? Yes, fully. Chad has created the Steve McQueen brand to be involved in all projects, including his father's image. Before 2019, the name Steve McQueen was not a brand and Steve McQueen's heirs had signed partnerships for some of the products Steve used to wear. To control the exploitation of Steve McQueen's image as much as possible, his son Chad decided to file the trademark SMQ (Steve McQueen). Fortunately, we have a very good relationship with his family, so we are happy to work with them and show them any new purpose we have for the eyewear. Everything is validated by the family. Can you tell me what makes these frames stand out from the rest? You know, we like to say that our brand is built on a timeless life icon, and I truly believe that when you put SMQ glasses on your face, you feel special. Thanks to all the great feedback we have about the quality, I can also say that that makes all the difference. Steve McQueen is an attitude, be proud of what you are, because you are making the right choice. The quality of the details and the fit of our products are key. That is impor-

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

Steve was known as a rebel, but your frame designs show more of his casual side. Is there still rebellion to be found in this collection? Of course there is! We made the choice to design something chic, elegant and vintage, and each piece is a tribute to his rebellious side, his passion for racing. For example, the hinge is the Porsche Speedster design, the end tips have a Triumph Bonneville tank design. These specific materials are our own creation. The new collection for 2022 will be more rebellious, with thicker acetate, original colours and frames that exude Rebel, Race, Passion, but still elegant and easy to wear. In this spirit, Steve McQueen's style, the clothes, the glasses, the cars or the motorbike he got are not crazy at all, but chic and elegant with a perfect finish.

91

tant for people who buy a product for themselves, and not just to show to someone else. What makes the difference with these types of products is the ability to understand the product through the information that the opticians can provide to their customers. Therefore, the strategy of distribution of this collection is also very important.

How did you realise to create a female collection as well, inspired by this uber-male style icon? I can say that this collection already appeals to women and suits them as well as men. It is for women who can borrow her husband's watch or shirt.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

Can you tell a bit more about the production and quality of this collection? The collection was developed and conceptualised in Europe with significant authenticity in reference to Steve McQueen. Each piece is designed and produced specifically for the brand. The hinges, the screws, the nose pads and even the end tips. The brand started with just one line and now, in 2022, we are proud to offer four lines. We have chosen to carefully select every material that makes up a pair of glasses, right down to the screws. Everything is meticulously handmade and allows for the creation of light and pleasantly wearable

92

models, thanks to a perfect fit, which gives a unique feeling of freedom. Details that can be found in this collection include; the detailed star-shaped brass rivet on the right spring; COMOTEC-specific self-locking brass Torx screws, for a more masculine and mechanical design; a titanium plate in the tips. And SMQ branding on the top of the spring ends.

The glasses are all named after cities. What makes these cities special? Not all, but some indeed. They are all cities where Steve McQueen spent a lot of free time with his family. He usually had a house in each of the cities that are the most famous today. For the others, like Slater, it is the city where he grew up, raised by his uncle Claude. What's more, in the new Luxe collection you'll find the Beech Grove model, the town where he was born. You have already launched 20 styles. What are your plans for the near future? The launch of all our new lines, such as Signature, Iconic and Luxe coming out in 2022 and why not a sunglasses collection?!

Interview

STEVE MCQUEEN

What is the ideal customer for this line of frames? I am not sure if there is an ideal customer, because the fact is that Steve McQueen is a truly popular and timeless icon. This collection is for car and motorbike collectors, free spirits and film buffs. The models can be worn by people who are looking for something chic and elegant but with a strong story and high quality and the models can also be worn by women. Finally, Steve McQueen Eyewear is the result of a strong human bond complemented by common passions and it is for anyone who shares all these points. This collection was launched by MMC'Eyewear. Can you tell us a bit more about their work? MMC'Eyewear was founded in 2016 and signed its first licence with Sunchild Eyewear, a brand for children and teenagers. Today, you can find our frames and sunglasses at more than 600 retailers around the world. We have a wonderful development project for MMC'Eyewear. Our goal is to develop and offer collections for independent opticians who are looking for the right and genuine collections with a strong image. What inspired you to change your job as an eyewear representative to making eyewear yourself? I don't see it as a change, but as an evolution. I have been passionate about the optical market since I met it! I have always been curious and passionate about new and different things, and I had the chance to work in different areas of this industry, and the opportunity to meet different and interesting people who inspired me and helped me to understand this world better.

Do you design with a CAD program or do you prefer to draw by hand? I work with a designer who does the technical drawings. But we often start with a sketch of an object that will inspire glasses. What do you like to do when you're not at work?Ik love to travel with my family and meet new meet new people, discover new places and other discovering different cultures.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

What material do you prefer to work with when creating an eyewear design? I love the possibilities that acetate can offer us for design and colors, it offers so many great options.

Neo Heroes Brett was inspired by a legendary 1970s TV series called "The Persuaders". British gentleman Roger Moore and his co-star, American bad boy Tony Curtis,

form a charismatic and contrasting duo who have all kinds of adventures! This contrast is reflected in Brett's frames. There are models that are thin and classic when viewed from the front, but massive and tough when viewed from the side. This is also reflected in the materials, such as acetate, block titanium or even combinations of these materials!

HENRY JULLIËN

Stylish and elegant Henry Jullien is one of the oldest French eyewear manufacturers based in the Jura region. The Jura has always been the centre of optics in France. At Henry Jullien, everything about the glasses is made in-house. They are the only company in the world that still makes spectacles from durable waltz

doublé. This requires a special technique, but Henry Julliën has been mastering this since 1921. This is how they became known all over the world and how they still are. Henry Julliën is also well known in the Netherlands, partly due to the extremely long durability and chic appearance. Since a few decades, glasses are made of nanoflex. This material was developed for space travel but is now also widely used in surgery. Pins and screws to connect bones are often made of this material. The reason: the material does not cause any allergic reactions. This makes it very suitable for glasses. It is also extremely lightweight. This guarantees high wearer comfort and a long service life.

Comfortable innovation

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

Printing frames with the latest 3D technology. That opens up possibilities that have never been possible before. Monoqool makes it happen, and how! Not only the production technique is innovative, but the design process is too. Designing for 3D requires a totally

98

different approach than for traditionally made eyewear. Layer by layer, the total product must be defined. If the design of one such layer is not correct, something will go wrong. To make sure that your new glasses are perfect, the first hundred glasses are extensively tested for strength, durability and quality as standard. The colour is applied later. The substances used for this are all (including FDA) approved for use in the food industry. The process of applying the colour is so precise that it is carried out by an external company that specialises in this. With a Danish design that is created using various techniques from around the world, you have a special frame. Beautiful spectacles with a story.

KILSGAARD EYEWEAR

Honesty is timeless In times of change and always looking for what is to come, we see a need to focus. To focus on true care to respect uncompromising choices - to always

stay true. Although much has changed over the years, great design has not. It is still about a relentless attention to detail and an interest in working with

your materials - getting out what is absolutely essential. For us, good design is honesty. We do not see the need to embellish what is already there. We see strength in reduction - letting raw materials and minimalist choices speak for themselves. Creating products where nothing is left to chance. That kind of honesty in design is timeless. Just like our frames.

Timeless and quietly powerful aesthetic

Haffmans & Neumeister manufactures all of its eyewear in-house using cutting-edge technologies and sustainable, customised methods. Each frame is hand-finished with impeccable precision and care and

is made from adjustable ultra-thin stainless steel and glossy acetate, ensuring a consistent and perfect fit. Ultralight, Ultralight+ and the new Bold Collection: Bold is primarily an acetate collection. However, all our collections use the stainless steel skeleton as a base. The question is how much is added to that skeleton. It is simply how a cappuccino, cortado, flat white and latte are all coffee with milk, but it is the ratio of coffee to milk that defines them. This is similar to how our collections are defined now: the ratio of stainless steel to acetate. Bold is more milk for espresso, Ultralight+ just a little less, while Ultralight is the pure bang-for-your-mouth espresso.

In addition to her eyewear collection, she designs for the French luxury brand Hermès and works with international interior and furniture companies. The Collection; Strong, independent and distinctive. Through research and experimentation, this collection

combines individual elements to create a new and multilayered aesthetic. Intersecting lines create gaps; different thicknesses evoke a sense of depth. Bold material combinations alongside delicate colour tone transitions result in an unexpected three-dimensionality. Inspired by the future, architecture and geometry. Veronika Wildgruber Eyewear first appeared in 2010 with four handmade frames, created in collaboration with French lunetier Jacques Durand. After their first presentation at the Silmo show, they immediately won the Silmo d'Or jury prize. Encouraged by this response, the first series production was launched in 2012. In 2017, it was again awarded the precious Silmo d'Or for Best Design Sunglasses.

The collection follows a central theme that is recognisable from the start. It is reinvented and translated into different materials and processed to different levels, while establishing an unmistakable formal coherence.

INTERVIEW L.A.EYEWORKS

GAI GHERARDI

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

TEXT: MAARTEN WEIDEMA

112

In the eyewear industry, the name Gai is a true institution and needs little introduction, but describe yourself to us briefly, and more importantly, do you have pets or are your glasses your babies? Thanks for the compliment, but darn it, I was just trying to disrupt the institution and not become part of it! No kidding, I am an epicurean and have never lost my curiosity about the world. I grew up largely in the seaside town of Huntington Beach, where Barbara and I became best friends in high school before we began our journey as opticians. These days, I live happily with Rhonda, my partner for life, and I have five California desert tortoises, three of which I hatched from the eggs of my two elders whom I adopted over 35 years ago. You know we love names at l.a.Eyeworks, and they are Curly, Blanca, Box Car, Jumby and Millicent. How funny!!! I know a few of those models yes, but wasn't aware they were named after your turtles. l.a.Eyeworks is a real family business, almost a tribe. Can you tell us how that is part of the brand identity and how it has helped you grow? The old thinking was "never hire your family and friends" and ours was "always hire your family and friends!" Trying to separate business and lives just didn't work for us as a construct. But there are many layers to building a sense of kinship. l.a.Eyeworks attracts like-minded people to its doors more often than not because of the sensitivity of our mission. Home is a place where you can feel safe to be your true self without judgement, and we've done our best to provide that feeling of safety, both for our clients and for all the amazing l.a.Eyeworkers who have made us what we are today over the

Interview

L.A.EYEWORKS

the venue. It is the heart of l.a.Eyeworks in so many ways and we lovingly call it the 'mother ship' because it has given us everything!

Your first creations were existing ugly frames, which you adapted in order to offer the public something unique. Can you tell us something about this time and how people reacted to it? Hahaha! Maybe they were ugly in the context of what was considered 'fashion eyewear' in 1979, and that's exactly what we reacted against. We were done with oversized, oversized, logo-laden, gender-specific, boring-coloured eyewear! We turned to our penchant for archetypes to start a new conversation - think glasses by Shuron, Gaspari, AO, and the health insurance company. We brought them to the present by painting, milling and sandblasting them, along with the addition of beautiful lenses. Our modifications made the frames gender-neutral. The idea of giving a man and a woman the same frames and seeing a transformation on both was so liberating. Barbara might say that we forced our sensibility to exist, but I think we also discovered that people were starving for a paradigm shift. Can you tell us about your first shop on Melrose Avenue? Is that still the same location as now? Yes, we still have our original shop at 7407 Melrose Avenue. I think that building deserves a historical plaque right now! When we opened in 1979, the street was mostly occupied by furniture repair shops and electronics suppliers. But the rent was cheap and for some reason it just felt right. Little did we know that over the next decade Melrose would become the equivalent of Kings Road as the epicentre of West Coast punk and new wave music, fashion and culture. As the street gained international fame, our shop became a crossroads for so many different and wonderful people. And I have to say that one of the great things about that time is that it felt like an awakening of sorts, where everyone was doing what everyone else was doing and supporting it. The popularity of Melrose has gone down and up over the years, but we continue to love

Can you tell me about the project you are most most proud of and why. Barbara and I wanted to be of service to people, and the glasses became the medium through which we could work toward that mission. l.a.Eyeworks is our way of giving ourselves so we can share that gift with others.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

years. Moreover, it is our daily practice to enjoy the ridiculous and the absurd - and no one wants to leave a fun party, right?

If I'm ever in LA I'll definitely walk in there to see if that feeling is still there. Is it still like before? Very much so, because our customers remain dedicated and curious about our perspective. And let's face it, with some of our customers we go back three, sometimes four and probably five generations. We have built a deep trust with people that what we offer is given with genuine encouragement.... and most likely a punch line of course.

113

You have "framed" some of the biggest names in Hollywood, can you give away some names? Of course, but I have to say that celebrities are not an end game for us. Many people we consider to be celebrities heroes, in fact - are not in the public eye. They are architects, chefs, civil rights advocates, costume designers, and so on. If you really want to get us excited, send then just send the nerdy book reviewer from the local public radio station whose dry wit and passion for literature we adore. That said, we have been honored to collaborate with more than a host of iconic people, including Elizabeth Taylor, Miles Davis, Tina Turner, Cher, Divine, David Hockney, Isaac Julien, Bette Midler, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Tilda Swinton, RuPaul, Ariana Grande and of course Sir Elton John who has shown such support and enthusiasm for our work. Out of that list of names, was there a special person or passing that really stood out? There are so many moments that seemed to be "business as usual" at the time that have become dear and meaningful in retrospect. It was always great fun chatting with Carrie Fisher, and I remember the day she put a manuscript on the counter and asked me what I thought of the title that she had come up with for her book: 'Postcards from the Edge'.

When did you start creating your own line of eyewear and how did that come about? Like many other stories in retail and design, when we couldn't find what we wanted to sell, we decided to make one ourselves. Around 1980-81 we we found out where the factories were in the Jura region of France and we made our first drawing, flew to Europe and knocked on the door of a factory. This year l.a.Eyeworks turned 40, congratulations! Do you still get the same kick out of it when it comes to design and running the stores? 42 years actually (and we're already dreaming about 50, at the very least!). Although I don't run the stores like I used to, I still run them creatively, and our original store on Melrose is a special and stimulating touchstone to this day. My father built the u-shaped sales counter that is still there, and every time I set foot in the store, the amount of energy is the same as it was on day one. The possibilities still seem endless. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? The unsurpassable thrill of making something and seeing it worn, worn and worn, by someone years later. Even the abstract idea of someone living their life and seeing what they see in something I made is still incredibly moving. This is why I always say that I have the most incredible gig in the world in front of me.

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

In those 42 years, you must have designed a lot of styles. Is there any eyewear design that is still your favorite? When you've created so many designs, it's almost impossible to pick a favorite. But the one that often comes to mind first is BURBANK.

114

Yes!!! that was a great design, and its time also so far ahead of its time! How do you come up with such a cool design? Does it start with a face, a personality, an architectural shape? It's like a swell in the ocean that gathers to form a wave, and for me that wave is made of all those things: faces, music, the way a dog walks, an angle of light, a dance movement, the colors of donuts , street fashion and so on.

Interview

L.A.EYEWORKS

But despite your colourful collections, your famous ads are all in black and white. Why is that? The campaign was created to show how glasses can enhance the unique beauty of each face. Making the portraits in black and white was a playful way of taking the idea of the glamorous Hollywood headshot and turning it around by showing outrageous creatures like Divine, Nina Hagen and Iggy Pop. In the same way that our frame designs did not require the approval of fashion or trend, we wanted to interrogate common perceptions of attractiveness, fame and style. Interestingly, four decades later, we have discovered that Greg Gorman's incredible mastery of black and white photography has given each portrait a sublime kind of timelessness.

Do you still design all the frames yourself, or do you have a team helping you? I still design all the frames, and still with an analogue pencil in my hand. You work mainly with acetate, why? Because the possibilities for expressive colours are so great! For me, l.a.Eyeworks is all about colour. Do you have a favourite? My guess is red or pink. Elvis Costello has a song called "How Deep is the Red", and indeed, red is a powerful and memorable marker that Barbara and I love (on the other hand, we have a long-running affair with yellow).

You are a member of Eyewear Designers of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (edCFDA) along with some great designers and friends of both of us, like Selima, Blake and Christian. What does that entail and what is your common goal? I love being part of this group of amazing talents, and yes, best friends. The edCFDA was founded with ambitious ideas in mind. Firstly, we want to elevate eyewear design to its own desirable and noteworthy category in the mainstream fashion dialogue. Secondly, we want to cash in on the substantial imprimatur of the CFDA for the benefit of the optical industry. Finally, we want the edCFDA to function as an incubator and promoter of emerging talent in eyewear design. What do you do when you're not working? Play! By that I mean travelling, looking at art, seeing as much live music and performances as possible. And then I feel like a fish in water! Yes, music and performances are what I miss the most in this strange period, let's hope that will be possible again soon and we can see each other again to enjoy you and your beautiful designs!

BOLD OPTICAL FAIR | SPRING 2022 |

" EVEN THE ABSTRACT IDEA OF SOMEONE LIVING THEIR LIFE AND SEEING WHAT THEY SEE IN SOMETHING I MADE IS STILL INCREDIBLY MOVING."

You recently launched a new brand called Fiction, can you tell us anything about it? What can we expect to see?
