What is design? Design is an art and a science, it forms our homes and our workplace and it is all around us, wherever we are. In daily life, design is crucial for success. Great design focuses on the user, combines aesthetic, economic and practical values, and is the way customers identify innovative brilliance. Design is the appearance of the whole or a part of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colors, shape, texture and/or materials of the product.

The title of this newspaper is slightly misleading because it states ‘Design Bolidt Flooring’ but it’s not really design by Bolidt. We’re not an expert in designing lines, contours, colors, shape or texture. But what we can do is make the design come to life in e.g. a floor, ship deck or wearing course if an architect or designer chooses to. Or better said: if an architect or designer has a dream, we can help him or her to realize this dream. Our strength is the strength of the material: thermosetting synthetics. They offer the best of two worlds. Functionality naturally comes first. The materials of Bolidt are wear resistant, maintenance friendly and, due to their elasticity, crack resistant. There are product versions that withstand corrosive solvents, are fire resistant, sound attenuating or heat insulating. But appearances also count. Because Bolidt’s materials are applied in liquid form, the resulting surface is seamless and smooth. Nearly all colors are available. Plain or multi-colored. Patterns can be created, mother-of-pearl can be added. Incorporating a print or picture is possible. Even 3-D effects can be applied. The aesthetic possibilities are endless. There’s only one challenge: you have to have a dream.

COLOR IN ARCHITECTURE MORE THAN JUST DECORATION How color influences people exactly is a complex matter! Many different aspects affect how we respond to color. One thing that is for sure is that color has an amazing power on humans and it has the ability to enhance our experience of the learning environment. Different levels of color interpretation The way we react to color is not just simply caused by biological aspects nor is it by just our personal preferences. It’s a blend of many different factors that make up that one reaction. According to Frank Mahnke from IACC, The International Association of Color Consultants, there are 6 levels of aspects that cause our psychological effects on color. At the basic level you’ll find that we are biologically programmed to react to a certain color stimulus. For example, a baby has an affinity for two dark spots next to each other, as it reminds them of their visual interpretation of a human face. The higher you get into the pyramid, the more it is focussed on personalized interpretation. At the top level, it’s our personal relationships that influence our reaction to colors. Color doesn’t only affect us psychologically, but also physically. Another study by award-winning interior designer Antonio F. Torrice, suggests that specific colors impact certain physical systems in the human body. As Mr. Torrice sees it, each color aids healing in a specific part of the body. Red influences the Motor Skill Activity, orange the Circulatory System, Green the Speech Skill activity, the color Blue influences the Eyes, Ears and nose and Violet influences all Nonverbal Activity. So that covers how color affects us in both a psychological and physical way. Now let’s talk about how we use all these insights to create a stimulating educational environment.

Functional color design vs. aesthetical color design The first thing that is essential is to approach color choices as a means of achieving an end result, such as an increased attention span, rather than from the standpoint of “what would look beautiful or nice”. Kathie Engelbrecht from Perkins & Will has set up functional color guidelines for designers that can be used for the interior design of the educational environment. These guidelines aim to diminish unwanted and demotivating circumstances for students and increase the preferred behaviour. Let’s have a look at a few examples: The right color scheme increases productivity and accuracy Color has demonstrated effectiveness on improving student’s attention span as well as both student and teacher’s sense of time. Monotone environments lower productivity and cause humans to turn inward, which may induce feelings of anxiety, and other negative feelings. While the more colorful environments stimulate productivity and improve academic performance and IQ scores. A study demonstrates that business environments that are white or off-white resulted in a 25% or more drop in human efficiency. So get rid off al those white classrooms! The right color scheme supports developmental processes Paying attention to each age group’s different responses to color is key in creating an environment that stimulates their educational experience. Children will reject or accept certain colors in their journey into adulthood. Young children find high contrast and bright colors stimulating with a growing preference for colors that create patterns. Within preschool and elementary school it is therefore recommended to use a warm and bright color scheme complementing with young children’s extroverted nature. For adolescents cooler colors are stimulation enough and are therefore recommended in order to increase the concentration span. After reading this you can conclude that a functional color design has the ability to improve the performance of students in the classroom. Katie Engelbrecht’s guidelines are made up of more functional color implications than just the ones stated in this article, so for the more detailed version you can read her paper ‘The impact of color on learning’.

1950 COLORS Bolidt uses the NCS color system for its flooring systems. All of our flooring systems can be produced in any color from the Natural Color System by our laboratory. NCS takes coloring to the next level in any design or architecture project. Each color can be described by its degree of similarity to the elementary colors yellow, red, blue, green, white and black, which in their purest state cannot be compared to any other color. The Natural Color SystemŽŠ was developed through 15 years of extensive research with the goal of creating a visually descriptive color system. Today the usage range from color management in product development and ensuring accurate paint production to color design in architecture and interiors.

Complex shapes offer a unique interactive experience Being misunderstood or feeling ignorant can lead to awkward situations. A wellmeaning Irish farmer who, having won a trip to America, enthusiastically shouts at the barman: ‘Great crack in here!’ With the sun blazing down on your back, trying to explain in your best Spanish to a Mexican policeman that you have been robbed. Both cases are bound to lead to trouble.

The European Parliament (EP) knows perfectly well that being understood as an organization and preventing ignorance among Europeans have a high priority. Throughout Europe, the EP is seeking to achieve this in various ways. In The Hague in the Netherlands, there is the information office of the EP, also called the House of Europe. What is European legislation and what is the EP’s role in the

The EP information building features many innovations. Every space in the museum offers a unique experience and makes you feel as if you have been transported to a special, almost futuristic world with the very latest technology. A real eyecatcher is the detailed, interactive map of Europe that has been incorporated into the floor. It has integrated pressure sensors, providing a visitor

with information about the country and part that he or she stands on. Lighting and audio fragments complete the experience. For the realization of this map, the EP approached Bolidt. With its Bolidtop® Print flooring system, Bolidt can incorporate any desired drawing or picture into a high-quality floor finish. The experienced experts from Bolidt were able to smoothly work around objects such as electrical boxes and supporting columns. The map has thus become an integral part of the space as a whole. Other exhibition spaces have been fitted with the sought-after Bolidtop® 525, a visually versatile flooring system that makes optimum use of the strong impact of color. Bolidt is delighted to be given the opportunity to map out this exceptional House!

Thermosetting synthetics are pre-eminently versatile materials. Our products can therefore be applied in widely divergent areas. Bolidt supplies wearing courses, grouting compounds and ship’s decks. But also crash test dummies and façade panels. An exceptional application is the one in submarines of the Dutch Royal Navy. Bolidt developed a system that seamlessly connects the batteries, which are embedded in synthetic material, to the skin of the submarine and can resist even the biggest shocks. The benefits of synthetics compared to traditional materials are recognized by the market. Bolidt continues to actively look for segments, in which its products can add value. Innovation is second nature to us. What is impossible today, might be possible tomorrow.

It is not only in theory but in practice, that architecture is a complex form of art. It is complex in its nature as it entails planning, creative designing and executing a three dimensional space, reflective of its function. The creator must have astute observations of the surrounding environment, the cultural and functional needs and the immediate and long term impact to ensure the longevity of the creation. It is not only these external factors that need to be incorporated to ensure a successful creation; but also a complete understanding of light and shadows, color and texture that make an architectural solution complete.
