Welcome Allegra, buongiorno, bonjour, grüezi or: hello! We are pleased to be Guest of Honour at this year’s Children’s Book Fair in Bologna. This is a special opportunity to present the multifaceted world of Swiss children’s and young adult literature from all four of the Swiss national language regions – Romansch, Italian, French and German.
5
The centrepiece of the Swiss presentation is the exhibition of works of 26 contemporary Swiss illustrators. In addition, the Scuderia, a venue in the centre of Bologna, will be transformed by a group of young Swiss artists (the “Bolo Klub”) into an artist-run space and meeting place. Even before the Fair officially opens, a variety of cultural events will take place at diverse locations in Bologna: the Istituto Svizzero will offer a film program for adults and children developed in collaboration with the educational department, Schermi e Lavagne, of the Cineteca di Bologna, the Notte del racconto (Story-telling Night), will be held at seven city libraries, and an exhibition will be devoted to the colouring book Testa in Su, which was a collaboration between two illustrators, one Bernese and one Bolognese, and which was distributed to over 5,000 schoolchildren. Numerous Swiss illustrators, children’s book authors, publishers and apprentice booksellers will be on site. We hope you enjoy exploring the diverse world of Swiss children's books.

Dear visitors from all over the world, cari Bolognesi! Switzerland is proud to figure as this year’s Guest of Honour at the Bologna Children Book Fair in Italy, a country world-renowned for its exquisite cultural life. Many bonds link Switzerland and Italy, first and foremost a shared language. Literature has always been at the center of our common efforts in the field of crossborder cultural activities, which provide rich and multifaceted insights into the character and soul of our two neighbouring states. We are looking forward to this unique opportunity to introduce you to our country in many varied, surprising and colourful ways! Beyond the official exhibition, The Swiss ABC, we want to reach out to the centre of Bologna in order to allow you to discover more about Switzerland, one of the world’s most innovative and economically-competitive countries, featuring a series of thriving and culturally vibrant cities. Among the different initiatives under the header La Svizzera in città, we would in particular like to draw your attention to La Scuderia in Piazza Verdi. This lively place will be transformed into a Swiss House and artist-run space during the entire duration of the fair. It will host an exhibition with the works of forty young illustrators from all four

The children’s book market in Switzerland
11
The children’s book market in Switzerland is special in that it thinks in four languages, and looks out ward in four directions: in the French-speaking Romandie to France, in the Italianspeaking Ticino to Italy, in German-speaking Switzerland to Germany and Austria, and in Romansch-speaking Graubünden into all the old valleys and secretive corners of the Alps. There are over 30 Swiss presses that publish children’s books, and about a dozen of these are exclusively devoted to the children’s book market. Picture books outnumber early-readers and young adult’s books. The publishers in the four cultural areas exchange rights strikingly infrequently and function very differently from one another. Together, however, they form a children’s book landscape that is blossoming and flourishing: almost every fourth children’s book bought in Switzerland originates in a Swiss publishing house. 1 The three largest children’s book presses – NordSüd, Orell Füssli/Atlantis and La Joie de lire – all report increasing revenues. The children’s book is the most stable source of revenue for booksellers in Switzerland, and in the last seven years its share of the total market has increased from 13.5 to 16.8 percent. 3 The three largest children’s book publishers each publish between 30 and 45 children’s books every year. NordSüd Press, which was founded in 1961 in Zurich and has a branch in New York, boasts the highest sales volume. Its best known hits are The Rainbow Fish (with over 30 million copies sold worldwide) and The Little Polar Bear (around 8 million), and recently Torben Kuhlmann’s books about a clever mouse. The publisher Orell Füssli in Zurich is home to several children’s book programmes, among them Atlantis, with an almost 90-year-long tradition. Atlantis has kept its name, and is home to, among others, the duo Kathrin Schärer and Lorenz Pauli. The Globi press has also kept its name, and is run as an imprint: Every year new illustrated stories appear featuring Globi, a character invented in 1932 with a yellow beak, a beret and chequered trousers. Globi is a truly Swiss phenomenon – over 12 million Globi books and non-book products have been sold, 95 percent of them in German-speaking Switzerland. The Joie de lire press is located in Geneva, and was founded by

a children’s bookseller 30 years ago. Its illustrators Albertine and Adrienne Barman are well-known internationally. NordSüd and La Joie de Lire earn some 20 percent of their children’s book revenues in Switzerland and the rest in the German-speaking world and France. 4 Orell Füssli/Atlantis sells 30 percent of its picture books in Switzerland, and 70 percent in the German-speaking world. 5 These domestic figures are reached by the three international publishers with titles directed at Swiss readers and with their attention to classics. “The relatively high shop prices in Switzerland and the wide range of international bestsellers and national longsellers make the Swiss children’s book market very robust,” says Herwig Bitsche, publisher at NordSüd press. It is a balancing act: on the one hand the high-priced island of Switzerland with its strong franc and free market prices, and over the border a much larger market with the weaker Euro and fixed book prices. This leads the German-language Swiss publishers to develop proactive pricing policies. The recommended shop prices for specific Swiss children’s books are adjusted to Swiss norms. To avoid reimports from German wholesalers, the Euro price has to be raised to the Swiss level. Asked whether she finds Switzer land an attractive place for children’s books, Gisela Klinkenberg, director of children’s books at Orell Füssli, says, “In my opinion it is. It has become somewhat more difficult, however, overall, especially because backlists are not well tended in some bookshops, and to a large extent we have to generate revenues with new books. This is a general development, however, and is not only relevant to children’s books.” When less emphasis is paid to Swiss titles, the sales in the domestic market look different, as the example of the publisher Diogenes demonstrates. Diogenes, the largest Swiss publisher of fiction, has long put out picture books, but usually without a particular connection to Switzerland. In its children’s book programme (which makes up 6.4 percent of its total programme) Diogenes generates only 3.7 percent of its revenues in Switzerland (orders by Swiss booksellers from German wholesalers not included). 6

Market Overview

The most famous children’s book character from Switzerland is Heidi. She was created in 1880 by the Zurich author Johanna Spyri and symbolizes the connection between the localness and the internationality of Switzerland. Heidi travels from the mountains to the big city of Frankfurt, where she learns to read and comes to love the world of books, but then returns to the mountains. She is like a shy relative of Pippi Longstocking: a child who does not easily fit into the norms of bourgeois society. The total worldwide sales of the many editions of Heidi are estimated at 50 million7 (Pippi Longstocking: about 66 million 8 ). The second world famous children’s book character from Switzerland also lives in the mountains of Graubünden, and is a farm boy: Schellenursli (1945) features a young boy who hikes up a mountain through the snow and the night to fetch the largest cowbell for the children’s parade around the village fountain. In 1966, Ursli’s creator Alois Carigiet became the first illustrator to win the Hans Christian Andersen medal. From an international perspective, the mountain world as a place of nostalgia is the classic element in Swiss children’s books. The following journey through the children’s book publishing landscape of Switzerland thus begins in the mountains, with snow, eagles and goats. In the Alpine region of Romansch Switzerland there is only one publishing house, the Chasa Editura Rumantscha. It publishes children’s books in the five idioms of the Romansh language. The programme emphasises local fairy tales. “In Graubünden there are about 500 fairy tales. Oral culture survived for a long time in the 150 valleys of our canton,”says publisher Anita Capaul. The ancient language, the isolation, light and shadows: this is what makes Heidi resonate, says Linard Bardill, the Graubünden children’s book author and singer, when asked why Heidi has become famous around the world. “Animals, plants, and the four elements are of absolute importance for children’s knowledge of the world. Also, that the child can go outside independently, in order to learn. In the mountains of Graubünden children can still grow up like this, but for how much longer? People all over the world are concerned with how they can, must and may ritually live with

nature. The most successful children’s book stories are always ones that move adults as much as they do children.” The children’s book press Baeschlin is located in Glarus, between the mountains and the Lake of Zurich. It belongs to the Lesestoffgruppe (reading materials group) along with several Graubünden and Glarus booksellers and the Kinderbuchladen Zürich (Children’s Book Store of Zurich – founded in 1970 and the first children’s book store in the German-speaking world). The young press landed a Swiss bestseller with the scented book Geissbock Charly (The Stinking Billy Goat),though the goat has not yet made the leap across the border. This might be due to the fact that goats call up more positive associations in Switzerland than in neighbouring countries, says Baeschlin publisher Gaby Ferndriger. The publisher da bux in Buchs is another example of a recently-founded press with children’s and young people’s books: since 2016 it has put out four 60-page books per year, with simple sentences and exciting, Swiss-related content. The target readership consists of young people between 12 and 16 years of age who are not used to reading or are in the process of learning German. From the mountains we travel to the Rhine, which leads out into the wider world. The Baobab press in Basel, a children’s book publisher founded in 1990, aims to bring picture and story books from Asia, Africa and Latin America to a German-speaking readership. Its foundational idea, which is still practiced today, is to publish picture books that not only tell children about other countries, but originate directly in those countries. At the start, the publisher confined itself to buying rights, but today about half of the programme consists of original publications. The idea of bringing cultures together goes even further, and illustrators from Tanzania, Iran and Georgia have been invited to Switzerland to talk directly with children and introduce their books. “Picture books present unique opportunities for opening doors to other cultures,” says the publisher's director Sonja Matheson. “And this pertains not only to traditions, but also to modern and contemporary imagery. If there’s anything our society needs, it is definitely knowledge about what connects us.”

The children’s book market in Switzerland
17
Distances are small in Switzerland, and in an hour we have travelled on the train from Basel to Zurich. In addition to the large publishers NordSüd, Orell Füssli/Atlantis and Diogenes, smaller publishing houses with children‘s book programs like Aricari and Midas also hold their own here. In Zurich we also come across a publishing particularity that could only exist in Switzerland: the SJW (Schweizerische Jugendschriftenwerk – Swiss Youth Writing Editions). Founded in 1931, the SJW puts out all its publications in booklet format at a price of six francs. The illustrations are by Swiss artists, and many up-and-coming talents find a platform here. The booklets are produced exclusively in Switzerland and mainly sold in schools. Unlike with assigned school reading, the children choose and buy their own texts. “The SJW promotes self-directed learning. Therefore the selection of attractive titles must be huge, the price manageable for children, the text lengths reasonable and supported by illustrations,” says director Regula Malin. In Switzerland the SJW booklets are a tradition, and every child is acquainted with them. A close connection to schools is a key component of the publishing work of Baobab Books, da bux and the SJW press. Many threads come together at the SIKJM (Schweizerisches Institut für Kinder- und Jugendmedien – Swiss Institute for Children’s and Young People’s Media), which was founded in 1968 and has offices in Zurich, Lausanne and Bellinzona. The intermediary work of SIKJM runs from research to documen tation to multi-faceted activities promoting reading. In addition, the institute runs the online databank Ricochet, which is a world leader for French-language children’s literature. SIKJM’s partner network is widely connected. When the Institute launched the “Swiss Day of Reading Aloud” last year, 1,300 organisers from libraries, booksellers, publishers and schools from all parts of the country responded immediately. Director Anita Müller thus has a broad view of the children’s book market in Switzerland. Her take on it: “In public perception and state support, children’s books here don‘t have the same status as, for example, in the Scandinavian countries; children’s books are hardly ever

discussed in the arts supplements of newspapers. Nevertheless, over the past two decades there has been a real blossoming in Switzerland, especially in the area of picture books. Illustration work in this country takes place at an exceptionally high level. This is partly due to the fact that the university in Luzern offers a bachelor’s programme in fiction illustration.” The Design & Art department of the Hochschule Luzern distinguishes between fiction (Pierre Thomé) and non-fiction (Roland Hausherr). Luzern has become one of the very important addresses for children’s book illustrators. Its connections to the international comics festival, Fumetto, are manifold. For a long time, western Switzerland stood in the shadow of its larger neighbour, France. This has fundamentally changed in the last few years. Besides the large La Joie de Lire in Geneva, Editions Notari also offers a children’s book programme, as does Editions Limonade in Nyon. The children’s book market functions somewhat differently here than in the other parts of the country. The publishers’ sales reps visit booksellers several times per year, while the programmes in German-speaking Switzerland are traditionally introduced to the booksellers only twice per year. And the style of illustration – is it fundamentally different? The most important thing lies elsewhere, according to La Joie de Lire publisher Francine Bouchet: “An artist should be free, should not worry about commercial or societal tastes. She should express with her talent what feels right and profound to her.” The ten-year-old publisher Helvetiq has an office in Lausanne and one in Basel, and grew out of a game company. Publisher Hadi Barkat, originally from Algeria, publishes all his books in German and French, and is currently building a distribution network both in Germany and in France, thereby blazing a new trail. The journey through the Gotthard tunnel leads to palm trees, promenades and the bookseller Francesca Martella, who last year founded Marameo to complement her bookshop in Gordola, at the foot of the Verzasca Valley. While there are individual publishers in Ticino that have children’s books in their programmes, like Edizioni Casagrande in Bellinzona,

the newly-founded Marameo gives southern Switzerland its first specialised children’s book publisher. Francesca Martella would like to promote picture books in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland that are popular in Switzerland but not published by Italian presses. At the same time she would like create a niche for Swiss books in Italy. This too is a story of crossing borders: 350,000 people live in Italian-speaking Switzerland, 60 million in Italy. “The greatest challenge will be to find our place between our home country, Switzerland, and Italy, with which we share a language and a culture,” says Francesca Martella. She has been travelling to the Children’s Book Fair in Bologna for 15 years as a bookseller, but does so this year as a publisher. The train journey is 330 kilometres long: the world is but a stone’s throw away. Pascale Blatter

Inspiring Children and Young People to Read – Since 1932. With its high-quality and affordable literature, SJW (Swiss Youth Writing Editions) has been instilling the joy of reading in children and young adults for more than 85 years. It also offers a platform for young Swiss illustrators. SJW publishes texts in all four national languages as well as in English, mainly by Swiss authors. In this way they support Switzerland’s cultural diversity, make a significant contribution to the promotion of reading and provide children and young people throughout Switzerland with an enjoyable introduction to reading. Rancoon Books
Taotime
The Rancoon Books publishes nonfiction, children’s books and novels having to do with beauty, health and society with the goal of attracting readers to very diverse subjects with a high-quality layout. Their children’s books communicate critical content in an age-appropriate fashion, and the easilyunderstood nonfiction books provide even laypersons with uncomplicated access to the material they present.
Taotime publishes media and – beginning this year – children’s books that promote a mindful way of life. Both ancient and contemporary ideas about leading a mindful life are presented – out of joy of life and as a possible response to the hectic pace of our age. Their content and presentation make the publications compelling to take into one’s hands, and serve as an invitation both to “slow reading” and to inner and interpersonal dialogue.

A Swiss ABC
The illustrators’ exhibition
37
Picture books unite illustrations and the written word in a unique way. The Swiss exhibit in Bologna exemplifies this connection. The leitmotiv is the ABC. The alphabet, with its 26 letters, can also be understood as a reference to the 26 Swiss cantons, which stand for individuality and variety, and yet come together to form a colourful and vibrant whole. In the A Swiss ABC exhibition, illustrations by 26 artists will be shown: for each letter of the alphabet an illustration and a word that sometimes obviously – and sometimes with a sly wink – refer to distinctive features of Switzerland. The 26 words used in the exhibition come from all four of the Swiss national languages – Romansch, Italian, French and German – and have been translated into English for the international audience at the Fair. Each of these words was matched with the illustration of an artist who was chosen by a jury of experts. The illustrations selected are typical of the work of the individual illustrators and all come from children’s books that are currently available.

Francesca Sanna Francesca Sanna – Io e la mia paura (Me and My Fear) A young girl moves to a new village. When she goes to her new school for the first time, Paura feels lonely and insecure. What if she can’t understand her classmates because they speak a different language? How will she find new friends? But maybe she’s not the only one who feels this way… A profound and gentle story that shows how each of us can find unexpected help if we share our fears. (For 4–7-year-olds)
Alberto Nessi & Albertine Simple Rhymes for Young and Old From lilies to geraniums, from cats to salamanders, in Alberto Nessi’s rhymes the world of plants and animals engages in dialogue with human beings. These children’s rhymes are like paintings that describe ironic and surreal images: a witch who only eats organic food, a lizard reflected in a teardrop, and a vain petunia. Albertine, the famous illustrator from Geneva, will enrich these images with simultaneous live illustration.

(Good Morning Sun – Goodnight Moon – Let’s Eat! – Let’s wash up!) – The Bohemini-mini series consists of books that narrate the world as children perceive it, describing what they see with their curious eyes. The small soothing rituals that characterise children’s daily lives are packed up in little stories and served to young listeners, spiced with ingredients like Discovery and Wonder. The first two titles, Buongiorno sole and Buonanotte luna, form part of the project Discovering Italy. (For 1–3-year-olds)

We also wish to thank the Institute for Children’s and Young People’s Media (SIKJM), the Solothurn Literature Days, and the Hamelin Foundation in Bologna for their support of the accompanying cultural programme.
