PERSONALIA SRTH
This portfolio is an add-up from the projects of my first years as a architect. My personal drive, when I finished my study Architecture at the Technical University in Eindhoven was to build. To create something fysical. To design something on screen or paper and then to see it getting born in reality. That fun, the fun of creating, for me is the most exciting part of being an architect. My career as an architect began as most of us have started; with a shovel and a bucket on the beach. Not suspecting that all that digging and creating could lead to a career. The beauty of the whole day creating is that a result has been made at the end of the day. It is finished and you take some distance to judge the result. The inexperienced has built his creations too close to the shoreline, but notes that only when a wave washes away the structure... You learn and start again!
Belief Creating a design is the outcome of a creative process. The framework of a design is formed by the boundary conditions, such as the wishes of a client, the program of requirements, budgets, urban planning constraints, technical requirements, etc. The vision of the architect explains the essence of an assignment. It states how the assignment is approached within the framework in order to realize the design. The building, the plans, the materialization and detailing are a translation of this vision. Because by definition it involves the smallest and therefore the easiest scale to manipulate, the “architectural detail is in my opinion an important part of that vision. Architectural details carry the concept behind a design in itself and make these (often literally) felt. In my opinion an architect takes the client on a quest looking for the essence of the task that has been assigned to him. From my background, the challenge lies in both the design and the ultimate realization of the design. The detailing and materialization of a design are thereby very important to me. Therein lies the essence of an assignment to me.

“all is connected multidisciplinary study-project technical university of Eindhoven 2003
ALL IS CONNECTED In the new master plan the city hall of Alphen a/d Rijn is the entrance to the city centre. The city hall is an icon on itself designed by Erick van Egeraat. To integrate a new theatre becomes a useful function to connect the city hall with the centre. We created a new square that is partly outside and partly inside. So the spaces become more and more private, when you are approaching the theatre halls. People can reach the theatre halls through corridors that connect the different levels of the halls. There are two halls, one big (cap. +/- 800) and the other small (cap. +/- 150). The round form of the halls will improve acoustic qualities.

“plug ‘n play” theatre of the future study-project technical university of Eindhoven 2004
Plug ‘n Play “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players” With this phrase William Shakespeare once started a monologue. For this project, design the theatre of the future, this phrase was my starting point. In my idea for a new theatre all people should be challenged to visite a performance or to participate in a play themselves! Besides that the new theatre forms a connection between railway stations and the city centre. This concept could be used all over the country, because station are almost always disconnected to city centres. The stage as a short-cut to the city... The best three project were presented in the Royal Theatre of The Hague.

“cooperating object graduaton project technical university of Eindhoven 2005
My personal fascination for a final project is that of the contrast between ‘private’ and ‘public’ domains. I am interested in the paradox ‘closed living environment’ (prisons for instance). The following topic was formulated: “Create a design for psychiatric housing in which the present building problems in this sector are solved.” Out of the field of problems I developed a overall vision, I call ‘COOPERATING OBJECT’. A vision for a paradox living environment, where people live in a closed world wich is not designed to help them. It is designed in such a way that people can not hurt themselves.

“match-box” business office and industrial hall rijssen 2006 (NL) built area 2210 m2 built volume 17488 m3 status: ‘realized’
A destroying fire was the input for my first project that is realized in my professional career as an architect. A building was destroyed by a big fire. When I told my client that a match box was the concept for a new design to build, he glanced at me with a curious look. I assured him that a concept is only used to achieve something.

“Roombeek a neighborhood with a history.” The dwelling house ‘En Passant’ is situated in the new neighborhood ‘Roombeek‘ in Enschede. It is part of the rebuilding and restructuring of this area after it was hit so inconceivably on May 13, 2000 by an exploding fireworks-factory. The balance between the preservation of the affected buildings and demolition, the balance between the recovery of the characteristic of the neighborhood and innovation and the balance between generous citizen participation and a driven approach of the government has earned this district The Golden Pyramid 2007. Along the so called Lonnekerspoorlaan, one of the principal axes in the district, an optimum has been found between freedom for the individual builders and the realization of urban ambitions.
The seperate houses are build with a number of specific conditions, such as different designs, widths and hights. By building the homes in a small increase (a plinth of 80 cm.) wich forms a terrace over the full width of the lot, it gives the whole a rise to a desired consistency across the total width of urban axis. With the absence of parked cars, a wide pedestrian zone and the location of a park at the front designers and residents are challenged to use this particular location settings. The result is a ‘patchwork-like’ block of houses that form a colorful wall.
“Basically I’m not interested in architecture as a profession on paper. I’m just saying this because many architects are not so interested in the real building, they are more interested in the theory of the building or in some aspects of the building. I’m concerned about the material, how things are put together, not the way it looks, but the way it is. I’m interested in the building itself, how you see it, how you feel it, how it is made. The building as a body.” Peter Zumthor

“sober embrace” extension of a physiotherapy practice rijssen 2007 (NL) before 173 m2 - after 342 m2 built volume before 864 m3 - after 1490 m3 status: ‘realized’ price winning design: Archie 2011 ‘best building extension of twente’
The physiotherapy practice is located in an old nursery house of the Green Cross. The existing practice was breathing a homely atmosphere. It was more or less a neighborhood center. The new extension embraces the existing building in a restrained, contemporary and sober manner at the rear of the building. The new extension provides the practice of the extra space that is needed, without the loss of the ‘low-profile’ character. The plan is completely revised, where a waiting room is situated in the hart of the practice. This room is most important to the therapists. It is a meeting point more than a waiting room. The old and the new parts merge into each other and together form the new interior. The old part is made tangible in the interior as an extra layer to the new plan.

“Dress to Impress” extension of a clothing store Inspiration trip to New York City before 6000 m2 - after 8500 m2 status: ‘in progress’
One of my clients, Paul Roetgering, owner of a giant retail store once asked me what I thought of his shop, where he was so proud of. I told him: “To me it looks like an enormous shopping mall full of clothes.” I said to him. “There is a bad routing and sight lines are very short. Therefore you have no idea how big your store really is and where you are situated in the building.” This was the start of a long collaboration in which I have become his personal aesthetic advisor. He was convinced that in order to make the right choices, we had to travel a lot and see as many inspiring stores as we could possibly see. So he took a small group of advisors to New York , London and Dusseldorf to see to most amazing retail stores, to visit interior design exhibitions and to get inspired by great designers.
In the past years we have worked to improve the interior of the existing retail store. I have told him that the entrance and the design of public space in front of his store could use a big upgrade. Besides that I have designed an extension for this enormous retail store. Not only to create even more space and square metres, but also to speak to a new audience and to accommodate new brands. Brands that sell not only clothing. They sell an experience! The next pages is an summary of some of the great experiences as well as a design for an extension of the retail store.

In addition to an expansion of the store the client also had ideas to expand in the area. The family Roetgerink was in possession of a villa in the village across from the store. This old villa (a monumental design of architect Nico Zantinge) was vacant for years. By assigning the backyard of the villa to the public area a real fashion square has arised. A square for the public!

“Redesignation pays off!” This project is about the conversion of an existing building to a ‘Kulturhus’. A building with lots of culture under one roof. The former town hall situated on the central square in Holten (NL) is redeveloped to a ‘Kulturhus’. A large, enclosed and formal building in the heart of the village has been transformed into an open and inviting cultural center which revives the city centre of Holten. “To create a vibrant and cohesive community atmosphere!”, that was the goal of the Mayor of the community of RijssenHolten. “Openness” is the magic word in this redesignationand expansionproject. To reach the required “openness” a number of interventions have been necessary. The former Mayor room as well as the closed balcony at the front facade are demolished and literally leaving an open gap. As a result, the building opens up to the public and the square in particular. It creates a new entry wich is emphasized by a new canopy. In addition, on the left facade of the building is also opened. Here is a catering establishment situated which also connects to the square. The entrance canopy and the catering have been given a prominent role on the square. The materialization and detailing of these new additions consist of lots of glass and zinc cornices, wich contribute to the novelty of the ‘Kulturhus’. This project investigates an optimal integration of new extensions in the context of an allready existing situation. There where once parked cars dominated the square for decades, a new vivid building gives this square to the public domain. Where the architect Jorissen Simonetti created the exterior of the building as a formal and enclosed volume, the interior is
surprisingly open and light. The existing interior had a perfect structure to accommodate a ‘Kulturhus’. The rooms are situated around a central hall in a split level design. There is an open space in the middle where the staircase is situated. Here light travels through deep into the building, even into the basement. The new interior is even more open by removing a lot of the interior facades and windowframes. Besides that some of the brickwork was plastered white in order to create a lighter interior.

Quote W.M. Dudok 1884 - 1974

Grandstand Football club Excelsior ‘31 Rijssen (nl) 2010-2013 built 1800 m2
“I have a dream....” With those words I once started my presentation for the build of a new grandstand with 650 seats for the football club ‘Excelsior ‘31’. At that time there was no plan, only a dream. The board of the football club first had to be inspired. The accommodation of the growing club had to be upgraded to meet the new standards and the property also had to be expanded to address the growth of members. But this project was not only about a new grandstand. The design should also accommodate 18 new dressing rooms wich are placed underneath the grandstand. To do so, the excisting grandstand wich only accommodated 300 seats and 3 dressing rooms had to be replaced for a new one. The exciting part of this project was whether the club could raise enough money to take this next step towards a new accommodation. In the end members helped raising money and so it became possible!

Underneath the grandstand there are two stories with changing rooms. The roof is constructed from laminated trusses which span the grandstand. Under this roof structure in the top a VIP-room is realized wich overlookes the pitch.

“The power of simplicity” The clients fascination of simple, beautiful things, like a Meistersinger watch was the starting point of this design. For example the form of a shed called a “Twentse kapschuur” was in their eyes an appealing image. My remark that a shed is not the same thing as a residential house, made that a design proces was launched.

This picture shows the project in its essence. Building a new building OVER the existing building while it stays in use.
Buildings along a highway are often expressed as “look at me! Here I am! A location along a highway demands a response. A beautiful design articulates good entrepreneurship. You differentiate yourself from the anonymous boxes which are often situated on general industrial sites. But what if a client does not want to show off. What if his merchandise should be guarded and is very classified. Then you build a closed vault that turns away from its surroundings!
