ew LRC stock or 2018 Article by Rachel webb
The first floor LRC will soon be celebrating ‘Fatal Femmes: A Celebration of Vintage Female Crime Writers’ which has recently been inspiring the latest additions to our fiction collection. This includes Donna Tartt’s ‘The Secret History’ and Agatha Christie’s classic ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. We will also be showcasing Patricia Highsmith who wrote some of the most thrilling Crime fiction, such as ‘Strangers on a Train’ and ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’. Interested in writing your own detective fiction? You can gain some insight from Highsmith herself, in her short book on ‘Plotting and Writing’.
Also new in stock, is Lavie Tidhar’s widely acclaimed ‘Central Station’ which was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award (2017). The novel is set in a worldwide diaspora which has left a quarter of a million people at the foot of a space station; at Central Station, cultures collide as the humans and machines continue to adapt, thrive and eventually evolve. New to our collection of comics and graphic novels is Hamid Sulaiman’s ‘Freedom Hospital’, a Syrian story set in the wake of spring 2012 after 40,000 people have died since the beginning of the Syrian Arab Spring. The story focuses around Yasmin who has set up a clandestine hospital in the north of the country, in a town controlled by Assad’s brutal regime. With beautiful black and white imagery, newcomer Hamid Sulaiman presents a devastating narrative. 7

ebruary airy Facts
According to the old roman calendar February was named Februarius after the Latin name Februum meaning purification. In Ancient Rome Februa was a ritual of purging the city of evil spirits in order to bring health, vitality and fertility to its citizens. It was celebrated as a “holy day” and based on the old lunar calendar which fell on the 15th of the month around the full moon. Today February is all about letting go of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year, bringing in love and welcoming new energies into your life. In terms of astrology, if you are an Aquarian or Pisces your birthday will fall in this month and your symbolic birth flower will be violet or a viola. Violets and pansies bloom in very cold weather and when you see their beautiful purple colour it
is a sign that spring is on its way, bringing a sign of hope, renewal, inspiration and promise.
An ancient symbol of Athens was the violet and has been used for centuries in perfumes to arouse and inspire the language of love. In olden times violets were considered to be flowers of protection often prescribed by “Cunning Folk” as offering relief from hangovers and headaches.
In spiritual terms purple is linked to the crown chakra (an energy
8
point which resides at the top of the head) and is associated with the connection between heaven and earth.
Carry a rose quartz crystal with you to remind yourself of how loved you are and place a piece under your pillow for a peaceful night’s sleep.
When attracting love into our lives an Amethyst can help you notice someone that you may have overlooked. If you sit with a piece of amethyst in the palm of your hand and close your eyes, you will find that your thoughts quieten down and your mind becomes clearer. Holding an amethyst will also connect you to your intuition and higher self, the knowing part of you.

howcasing hila ahmadzai’s REEDOM ART Article by zoe rothwell
Zoe - Can you please introduce yourself and give me a little bit more background information. Shila - My name is Shila Ahmadzai, I’m 19 and I’m from Jalalabad, Afganistan and I came here in 2010. Zoe - Could you speak English when you came?
I started to learn it at school, it took about four years, I found it really hard.
Shila - No, I had no English and I was crying and saying ‘Why did I have to come over here?’ but then
Zoe - What are you studying at Bolton College? Shila - Art and Design Level 3, Year 2 with tutors Hannah, Rachel and Dolores. Zoe - What medium do you prefer?
10
Shila - I like drawing, primary drawing and also textiles. I use pencil first and then move on to pen and then I add colour in Photoshop using the graphics tablet. I like to be given a brief and I use my own photographs as a starting point, I like to take pictures of flowers and fauna.
Shila – Freedom, so my freedom of expression and my freedom of speech. Zoe - What are your goals and aspirations?
Zoe – What do you like to concentrate on within your subject matter? Shila – I like nature and animals and use a lot of colour and texture within my work. I like the patterns within nature and the way it repeats over and over again.
Shila - I would want to become an artist and could see my art developing either as murals or even as a design within wallpaper or fabric. I like the geometric patterns within mosques but it’s really hard to do as it’s so precise - I will have to practice again to see if I can do it. I have been given a place at the University of Bolton but I am also considering Blackburn, so I will most likely study textiles or surface design & pattern at one of those.
Zoe - So when you have figured out your personal style and technique where could you see your art being shown? Shila - I’d like to see it in galleries or in a magazine, that’s like my dream. Zoe - If you were trying to say something with your work what would it be?

oost your employability e ahead of the crowd By Janette Davies
So, you’ve enrolled on to your chosen course that will hopefully secure a career in your subject area. Next thing you know you’re also enrolled on to Employability. Many learners find themselves in this situation and ask “Why do I have to do Employability, I only want to do Hairdressing and Beauty”? This article aims to answer the question. Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching?
Back in the previous millennia the term ‘employability’ was rarely heard of in schools and colleges, let alone a nationally recognised qualification. 14
However, the collaboration of employers and awarding bodies such as City and Guilds, OCR and Edexcel revealed a skills gap that needed addressing urgently.
It was brought to the attention of awarding bodies that employers need people who have a positive attitude, good personal qualities and excellent communication skills to ensure the success of their business. You may have a First Class Degree in engineering, 10 A* GCSEs or 4 A grade A Levels, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will make a good employee. You also need employability skills which are a set of behaviours and skills that enable you to establish effective relationships and function appropriately in the workplace. They include, but are not limited to, the ability to:
• • • • • • • • • • • • •
Demonstrate responsibility and self-discipline Adapt and show flexibility Work independently Demonstrate a willingness to learn Demonstrate integrity Demonstrate professionalism Take initiative Display a positive attitude and sense of self-worth Take responsibility for professional growth Deal effectively with customers Manage own workload Produce accurate up-to-date documentation
We’ve all experienced people at work who fail to demonstrate employability skills. Remember the shop assistant who makes you feel you’re a nuisance. The builder who tuts when you ask him a question. The colleague who’s always late completing work.
These are just a few examples, I could write hundreds more, but it would take up the whole magazine. Imagine you’ve created a successful business after years of hard slog. You love what you do and what you have achieved. You need more staff - staff who are as dedicated and committed to the success of the company as you are. Would you employ someone like you to work for your company? Think about it carefully and give an honest answer. If you are doubtful, you have a problem. You need employability skills. You may be able to secure employment with your qualifications, but you will not be able to maintain it or progress unless you can demonstrate employability skills. So take your Employability sessions seriously – you will be glad you did in years to come!

By Rob Steventon Travel’s a necessity, but leaves me feeling frail. I wouldn’t mind a seat or space to stand and sip an ale, Space in the vestibule consumed by commuter’s travail, Crushed against a door secure as Hillary’s emails. These departure times are about as much use as flattened Braille, My patience has shrunk to the size of an egg of a quail, A migraine’s been induced from the all toil that it entails, To get to work on time, it’s a far-fetched fairy tale. I’ve bloody lost two hours wages from the delay, I’ll Spend ‘till 10AM hiding my hate through a thin veil. The taxpayer pays three times more since British Rail’s sale, Compared with ours, other country’s ticket costs pail. I’d have been quicker holding an umbrella up against a gale. As I alight I’m met with queues just faster than a snail Met by some G4S bully boy who looks hard as nails With a body cam and a beer gut, The size of a sperm whale He murders fare evaders and he’s just been released on bail. I’m coughing phlegm up thanks to plumes of exhaust I’ve inhaled. It’s as good for the environment as drilling for shale. Serco’s profits soar while my punctuality fails. Uber’s stocks boom- there’s fights for a taxi to hail. I hope you step on an upturned plug, Northern Rail. What has been found is Inefficiency’s holy grail. Scrap your 1970’s trains and throw your directors in jail.

Adored, you are the sole wish I have The only tomorrow I ever wanted Darling, you are the blinding hot tears which flow down my cheeks That gracefully touch my lips to also make me realise I crave for your body and your presence You are the smile upon my face infusing my soul with love Sweetheart, you are the sunrise I want for tomorrow To fill all my shadows with luminosity Be the thunder and remove my sorrow Be the fire and burn all my worries Baby, you are my last desire and my only purpose to breath
