From Mrs. Faulkner

I can’t quite believe we have reached the half term break already, it feels like only yesterday we were welcoming the boys back to school and yet we have squeezed so much into that time, I think we are all looking forward to a bit of a rest and recharge.

We will end this half term in our usual manner with the House Cross Country event. Parents are invited to come and cheer the boys along. We will be transferring the boys to the levels at Senior School at around 1:30 just in time to cheer on the Y2 children before the Y3 &4 race begins at 2pm and the Y5 and 6 one at 2:30pm. If you are coming along, please can I ask that you enter the grounds via the sports field entrance on Tudor Avenue and not the Dobson Road entrance we will be using for the pupils. Let’s just hope for good weather.

This week I enjoyed a most productive planning meeting with the key group of volunteers who make up the Park Road PA. We have been discussing the return of the ever popular Breakfast Club, Christmas Hamper Raffles and of course the good old cake sale. The work of the Parents’ Association is a most valuable element of school life and exists very much based on the goodwill of parents who are happy to give their time to support the different events across the year. After half term we will be publishing a diary of the events planned in the rest of this year and if you feel you can help at any of them, even if only in the very smallest of ways, please do get in touch as your support would be very much appreciated.

By way of an update, I can now share with you the lovely news that both Miss Fletcher and Mrs Hunt have welcomed their new arrivals in the last week or so. Miss Fletcher’s little boy is called Stanley Jeremiah and Mrs Hunt has had a little girl called Sydney. I know that you will all join me in congratulating them and their families on the babies’ safe arrival.

I look forward to seeing many of you on Friday afternoon and wish you all a lovely half term break.

News from the Art Room

Experimentation, play and fun. In the art room we have been playing with materials and methods for creating human forms and portraits. Having a chance to play and experiment with new materials is an essential part of the artistic process, helping to explore new media. It's also a lot of fun!

Football Scores

Football-On Friday, 42 boys travelled to The Kings School Macclesfield to take part in our annual Year 6 fixture. All 4 games were played in good spirits with a total 17 goals scored. Well done all, keep up the good work! TWRG

Burns Night

Save the date! Our annual Burns Night celebration will take place on Saturday 25th January 2025 (6:30pm – midnight) in the Arts Centre at school. We’ll be celebrating the life of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns, on the actual anniversary of his birthday in the way he’d have wanted –with eating, drinking, dancing and laughter!

The evening will include a delicious traditional dinner (inc. vegetarian options), authentic ceremony, live piper and a fantastic Ceilidh band. Tickets will be on sale after the October half term –keep an eye on the newsletter and X (@BSBDFriends) for details. Only 10 tables of 10 guests are available for this very popular, atmospheric event!

To sponsor the event, or if you’d like to donate raffle prizes, please email bdfriends@boltonschool.org.uk

Early Career Teacher Event

Bolton School is hosting a regional ECT event in November and is asking interested parents to please come and talk with attendees. Parents would be asked to sit at a table of Early Career Teachers to discuss what information is useful to receive from a teacher and what involvement parents want in a school. Parents would need to be in school between 11.45 - 12.30 on Thursday 7th November. If you are interested in helping with this, please email bdfriends@boltonschool.org.uk by Monday 4 November.

BBC Philharmonic

Last Wednesday all boys who play an orchestral instrument travelled to Aviva Studios to hear the BBC Philharmonic play. Throughout the school we study different pieces which feature in the BBC Ten Pieces and this concert marked the 10th anniversary of their launch. We heard a variety of pieces from a medieval song to an orchestrated version of Plants Vs. Zombies. All the boys enjoyed hearing such a fantastic orchestra and spotting their instruments being played.

Chess

Eco-Committee

The Eco Committee have been repurposing waste paper. We have made an 8 page book using only one piece of paper. A great resource for school and at home!

Half Term Activities

If you are looking for a day out over the half term holidays there is a fantastic exhibition at Bury Art Museum, "Going to the match". https://buryartmuseum.co.uk/ Exhibitions It not only features the worldfamous LS Lowry painting of the same name, but looks at the community surrounding football through photographs, memorabilia, and responses to the beautiful game. Mr Minta worked with a school in Bury to create a shared poem which has been recreated as a large graphic wall-piece.

Achievements

Alex (6B) was very pleased to meet Sir Lindsay Hoyle with on Friday morning. Alex asked what inspired Sir Lindsay to become an MP, and he talked very passionately about how he wanted to help people, especially local people from his Adlington & Chorley constituency.

Jason (4A) entered the Manchester Junior Chess competition on Sunday in the Under 9 category. Although he did not claim any title, he won 3 rounds out of the 6 rounds. He was very proud of it as we were. Well done Jason.
