Wednesday 19th June

It looks like the weather is going to be great for this weekend’s Summer Festival. There is still time to buy your tickets and also to enter the competitions which will take place. The event itself will take place on Sunday 23rd June from 12 - 4pm. Included in the ticket price will be inflatable fun and games suitable for everyone – there are five separate zones containing many different types of inflatables and activities, and covering all ages. Group tickets for 4 people are discounted, so why not bring friends and family along to take part in the event, set in the grounds of our beautiful and iconic school!

In assemblies this week we have been talking to the boys about transitions, in preparation for our moving up morning which will be held next Tuesday, 25th June. The boys currently in Year 6 will be spending the day at Senior School getting to know the boys in their new form, as well as their new form teacher and a little about what to expect in September. They should arrive at Park Road as normal in the morning and leave from Park Road at the end of the day, we will make sure they get to the right place, at the right time. For all other boys, they will be enjoying some time with their new forms in the morning.

As we think about next year, it is important to let you know of a few staff changes. As you are already aware, Mr Duxbury will be retiring at the end of this year after a long and productive career at Bolton School, which is, of course, his second career after all! Also leaving us at the end of this year will be Mr Winstanley, who has accepted the role of DT and Technology Integration Teacher at International School of Stavanger in Norway. We wish both Mr Duxbury and Mr Winstanley the very best for the future and will see them off in style at the end of term. Mrs Howarth has been so inspired by her time supporting the boys’ learning in their DT lessons that she is going to be spending next year training as a DT teacher at Manchester Metropolitan University, we also wish her the very best of luck.

These departures mean that there will be a few new staff joining us. These include Mr Ryan Speed who will be teaching in Years 5 and 6 mainly, Miss Amber Brockbank who will be teaching Year 3, Mr Chris Walker, currently Boys’ Division DT teacher will be joining us part time to teach DT and Mrs Shannen Cahill will be a part time class teacher.

As you know, Miss Fletcher will be going on maternity leave during the new academic year, so Mrs Brisk is stepping into the Deputy Head role in her absence and Miss Emma Gregson will be joining us from Hesketh House as Senior Teacher with responsibility for Teaching and Learning. Mr Minta will be taking on the role of Extra-curricular and Enrichment Coordinator.

The form teacher teams for next year will be:

Year 3 3A Miss Brockbank, 3B Mrs Hough

Year 4 4A Mrs Gould, 4B Mrs Clarke

Year 5 5A Mr Speed, 5B Mr Price, 5C Mr Minta. Mr Hough will support across the three classes.

Year 6 6A Mr Porter, 6B Miss Gregson, 6C Mr Livesley. Mr Grieve will support across the three classes.

The current 3A will go to 4A, 3B will move to 4B, 5A become 6A, 5B become 6B and 5C move to 6C.

The current Year 4 children will be split into three Year 5 classes and their new form group and teacher has been shared with the boys this afternoon.

Primary Division Charity Walk

On Monday 24th June, pupils and staff from the whole of the Primary Division (Nursery, Beech House, Park Road and Hesketh House) will be taking part in a charity walk in ongoing support of the Foundation’s Malawi School Build project.

We are challenging all of the children to walk as far as they can around the Senior School Levels to raise as many funds as possible to give orphan children the precious gift of education! Everyone will be asked to dress in the colours of the flag of Malawi (black, red and green) and we hope that has the added benefit of being more environmentally sustainable, as well as less stressful (and expensive) for parents.

Your child’s pledge sheet has been sent home via your son with all the details about our the charity walk for Malawi. Donations can be made on Parent Pay. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Pot Noodles for Urban Outreach

Following our successful Christmas collection appeals, the School Council decided that it would be a good idea to support Urban Outreach throughout the year.

We organised the emptying of the green Grub Tub on the bottom corridor and it is now ready again to receive donations.

Urban Outreach needs certain things all year round and so we have volunteered to collect pot noodles. Please bring in sealed pot noodles (any flavour) and put them in the green Grub Tub.

Our aim is to collect as many pot noodles as we can by the beginning of July.

Thank you ! School Council

Term Time Holidays

There has been a notable increase in those seeking approval for additional days of holiday, very often immediately before or after the normal school holidays. We monitor all such absence in order to spot patterns and discern trends. It is timely to remind you that I cannot, by law, grant absence for holidays in term time unless in exceptional circumstances. June Geography Mission

Instructions: design a sustainable and futuristic city

Give your city a name and explain which country it could be found in e.g. a HIC/NEE/LIC

You need to label 10 aspects of your city which are sustainable

Consider buildings, transport (vehicle charging points), green spaces, water conservation, renewable energy sources, walkable and bikeable neighbourhoods and education on sustainability

How to submit your sustainable city: email lgillibrand@boltonschool.org.uk with your submission by Sunday 30th June at 4pm

PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS! WHO CAN CREATE THE MOST GEOGRAPHICAL AND CREATIVE CITY?

A valiant effort from our U11 AJIS cricket team saw them nearly hold off a run chase by King’s Macclesfield last week.

The game was tied going into the last over and, unfortunately for our boys, King’s Macclesfield grabbed a quick single with only four balls left.

After a very positive run in the AJIS cup, our boys were sadly knocked out in the semi-final.

Very well done to all!

Last Saturday, four boys from Year 6 travelled to Sheffield to take part in the annual English School Swimming Association relay championships.

After taking in their surroundings and undertaking a afternoon with two PBs in both the 4x25m freestyle relay and the 4x25 medley relay.

Massive congratulations to Oscar, Sam, Raees and Harlan. TWRG

News from the Art Room—Clay Club

Mr Minta is extremely proud of Clay Club this week. The boys have worked really hard over the past few weeks to create and then glaze some clay tiles based on the school crest.

Huge thanks to Mrs White in Seniors Boys’ for inviting us over to glaze our tiles and for ensuring everything was fired.

It is great that we can access the kilns at Senior School for our projects. JPM

Music News

Last Wednesday evening, we held the Year 4 Concert at Park Road.

We were treated to many wonderful solos on piano, drums, guitar, strings and even a ukulele!

All the boys demonstrated their recorder skills and ended the concert with three songs linking to different topics they have studied throughout the year. The standard was really high and I look forward to seeing how they continue to progress.

Many thanks to the boys’ individual music teachers who helped prepare the boys for their performance.

Recently, we have also had music demonstration from two of our visiting music teachers, Mr Binns for brass and Mr Jones for oboe/ recorder. Wind instruments are in decline and it would be great to have more wind players in school. If your son is interested in individual music lessons on these instruments, Mr Binns and Mr Jones are offering a trial lesson to see if your son enjoys it.

If you wish to have more details or to arrange a trial lesson, please contact Mr Binns for brass at cbinns@vmtboltonmusic.org.uk or Mr Jones for oboe/recorder at mjones@vmtboltonmusic.org.uk HJO.

Achievements

Congratulations to Arman, in Year 4, who sat his entry level guitar exam last week and passed with merit.

Well done !

Our resident skier, Jasper in Year 5, has had a great couple of weekends racing. Last weekend, he competed in the Parallel Lines competition in Castleford where he won a gold medal as well as meeting and skiing with the British Paralympic team. This weekend, it was races 3 and 4 of the Copper Horse GBR Series at Chill Factore. Jasper won first place on day 1, and second place on day 2 in some incredibly close races!

He also raced wearing 'the red bib' as the U12 leader in the national series so far. He retains his first place ranking after this weekend, with a 50 point lead. Jasper skied with incredible determination all weekend, especially on Sunday when he pulled himself back from a small error on run 1.

Amazing achievements, very well done, Jasper !

Congratulations to Rohan in Year 6, who represented Greater Manchester U12s hockey team at the North West Regional tournament over the last two weekends. He was the team’s top scorer with 11 goals in 11 games. Well done, fantastic achievement!
