Bolton School Primary Division Junior Boys’ School Wednesday 29th November

Autumn Term, 2023 — WEEK A

From Mrs. Faulkner

COMPULSORY SCHOOL EVENT THIS TERM: Carol Service, Tuesday 19th December, 7pm

Wednesday 29th November Swim Development, 4-5pm Cubs, 6.30pm

During assemblies last week, I spoke to the boys about communication, and, in particular, about talking to others about how they are feeling. So, when I was relaxing in front of the TV the other night, I was most interested to see an advert aimed at supporting parents to encourage and help children to talk about their feelings. According to a recent NHS survey, mental health has declined in almost 40% of school children. There are a number of factors behind this statistic; in part, the pace of modern life, the impact of increased access to technology and changes in family circumstances are just some of the contributory factors. Key to supporting our children in managing this, is to encourage them to talk about what’s on their minds. The ‘Britain Get Talking’ campaign, organised by ITV in conjunction with Mind and Young Minds, is designed to help ease some of that stress and reduce anxiety by encouraging us to talk about what’s on our minds. There are some helpful tips and resources which can be easily accessed via the link below: Britain Get Talking | Home (itv.com) This evening, school will be hosting a Zoom presentation by Rachael Richards, Engagement Lead for Kooth, an online, confidential space where young people, aged 10 and upwards, can share experiences and gain support from qualified professionals. The presentation will explain more about what Kooth is and what it offers to young people. It will start at 7pm and can be accessed via the Zoom link below. The presentation will be recorded for those who are unable to attend. To join the Zoom meeting: https://kooth.zoom.us/j/85887360056?pwd=WXbittUpdJes4SEJgBafgq1mUvu1bM.1,

Thursday 30th November Y3/4 Science Masterclass, Withington HS, (all day) U11 Football vs SGS (A), depart PR 1pm, return approx. 4.30pm

Meeting ID: 858 8736 0056; Passcode: ?Ywx1$5b As this is an area of particular interest to me, I have also been reading a most interesting book which some parents may find useful—it is less academic than the author’s previous work, Toxic Childhood, and, so far, seems full of relatively easy to implement, useful advice to support families. I’m happy to pass my copy along just as soon as I’ve finished reading it.

Achievements News from 3B : This is Me – Reflection of Self Competition : very excitingly, the boys from 3B and some boys from Mr Livesley’s Year 5 English class, have been selected to have their poems published by Young Writers. Once parents have given permission (by 8th December), the book will go to the printers and we look forward to receiving a copy for the library in early February. What a joy to it will be to have published poets in school! ALH

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 Cross Country team, which achieved first place in the Moss Bank Park, Cross Country League last half term! We await the news about who has qualified to represent Bolton at the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships in February.

Well done to all boys for competing last half term. MLB

Congratulations to Dylan Jones in 5C, who took part in a chess challenge in Leeds recently, where he was competing against adults in the U16 section rather than U11s. Dylan faced four tough losses against competitors with an average age of 47. He remained undeterred, confidently saying, “I’m going to draw or win one of the two last games.” True to his word, he won the last two, demonstrating incredible resilience and grit. Well done!

Astley Bridge Cricket Club—Winter Net Sessions If your son is a keen cricketer, he may be interested in attending Junior Winter Net sessions, run by Astley Bridge Cricket Club, at Turton School on Sundays, from 14th January, 2024.

If you need any further details, please contact the Club directly—abccjuniors@gmail.com. The 10 week course costs £40.

Senior School Joint Production The Senior Joint Production of Around the World in 80 Days will take place from Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th December in the Boys' Division Great Hall. Performances begin at 7 pm. Around the World in 80 Days is the tale of uptight Victorian gent Phileas Foggs's dash to circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days to win a gentleman's club wager. The show is full of slapstick capers as our measured man of manners pushes the boundaries of steam travel, armed only with a good brolly, a bag full of cash, stoic faith in Bradshaw's book of world timetables and his colourful French valet, Passepartout. We are promised a laugh a mile as the acrobatic cast presents a blur of platforms, trains and exotic ports for the duo to journey through. The show will be awash with bowler hats, circus acts, elephants and pith helmets!

Please book early to avoid disappointment via Shopfront. Shopfront can be accessed Payments/3506014.html

Park Road Carol Service This year’s Carol Service will take place in the Great Hall of the Boys' Division Senior School on Tuesday 19th December at 7:00pm. This is a compulsory event for all boys and is a presentation of work completed during school music lessons this term. All boys should present themselves at the Senior School no later than 6.45pm, wearing a white shirt with long sleeves and normal school uniform, without a jumper or blazer. Parking will be available in the Senior Boys’ Quad. Entry to Senior School is through the Riley Centre or the corner of the Boys’ Division Quad, where a Sergeant will be on hand to guide you to the Great Hall. Apart from a small number of seats, which are reserved for families associated with the readers and soloists, please sit wherever you wish and feel free to invite close, family guests. Since this is a service, it is customary for there to be no applause following each performance. Please note that neither photography, nor filming of the event is permitted and that all mobile phones should be switched off. There will be a retiring collection in aid of Save The Children, which we hope you will feel able to support.

Festive refreshments and non alcoholic drinks will be served in the Riley Centre from 6.30pm. These will not be individually priced, we will simply be asking for any donations you can make, raising funds for our Parents' Association. Please bring cash if you can!
